Twinka Thiebaud and the Art of the Pose - The Crocker Museum

A little less than a year ago I was invited to participate in this extraordinary show about the life of one extraordinary woman Twinka Thiebaud. The Crocker Museum in Sacramento, California was putting together a retrospective on her role as an artists’ model and muse.

I first met Twinka in 2015 when we connected at a Photo Lucida event in the Portland Art Museum. We felt a real kinship with one another and she posed for me in The Deep In Between series. It’s interesting how some people you are immediately drawn to and Twinka has a charisma, gentleness and creative flair like no other. I’ve had her model one additional time and gotten to break bread and drink tea together over captivating story-telling. I loved hearing about modeling for her father Wayne Thiebaud, her years with Henry Miller (you can find her book here), and the many photographers and artists who have documented her over the years including Judy Dater (check out her infamous portrait of Imogen Cunningham and Twinka here),

I’m honored to be a part of this show that showcases different perspectives of the same subject by over 30 talented photographers. All of us had the the distinct pleasure to play in the sandbox with Twinka and I can’t wait to see the Museum exhibit this opening weekend and watch a woman evolve in pictures over the span over seven decades.

Seattle City Panorama Installation

In 2017, the Photographic Center NW PCNW paired with King County Metro and Youth in Focus to curate a collection of engaging photo murals to adorn bus stations through the Seattle metro area. In January 2019, a selection from my Childhood Gravity Games series was installed at a bus shelter in Seattle as part of the City Panoramas project. These are estimated to be up for ten years.

A few weeks ago, I went up to check it out and boy is it fun! This shelter is located 1/4 block from Top Pot Donuts, which made for a super satisfying excursion.

The Big Picture Goes to Brussels

Two images have been selected for installation in the City Panorama bus shelters out of 1200 submitted images. 100 photographs were chosen and will be printed on 2' x 8' wooden panels and will remain installed in King County Metro shelters for up to 10 years.This citywide exhibition brings photographic art into everyday life. This showcase of imagery that will decorate the cityscape of Seattle is curated by Photographic Center NW. This annual project is a partnership between PCNW, King County Metro and Youth in Focus.

Excited to participate in this street art project, The Big Picture Colorado, organized and curated by Mark Sink. Walking the streets filled with black and white photography must be inspiring and energizing.

This show of grand scale contemporary photography exposes the possibility of images as art via email instantly exchanged globally and blown up to large mural proportions. Images gathered from photographers around the world will be expanded as large Xerox prints and displayed inside galleries as well as posted in approved outdoor locations throughout the city of Denver and sister cities around the globe. - Mark Sink

One of the photographers I've long admired is Joyce Tenneson. Her dreamy, gorgeous style of working with women is something that has inspired me from the beginning of my photography career. When I saw she was curating a show for the PhotoPlace Gallery in Vermont, entitled 'Intimate Portraits' I knew I had to apply. I was beyond thrilled to know she had not only looked at my work but selected it for gallery exhibition. The group of intimate portraits she selected are wonderfully complex, dreamy and thought-provoking.

So let me be the first to say that . . . I was overwhelmed by the number of truly outstanding submissions to the SECP’s themed exhibit, ‘Color.’ To be asked to view 873 images, almost all of which were impressive in one way or another- many of which were downright stellar- was both an honor and a real treat. To then have to make the hard choice of what would go and what would remain on the walls, was both difficult and heartbreaking. Twinka Thiebaud Steps In

I met Twinka Thiebaud during the Photo Lucida show at the Portland Art Museum back in July and a few weeks later connected one-on-one over her table for tea. There was an instant ease and connection with Twinka as we shared aspirations and stories. I was tickled learning about her tribe of creatives that surround her now and the ones she's travelled with in the past, including her years with Henry Miller (you can find her book here), the many photographers and artists who have documented her over the years including Judy Dater (check out her infamous portrait of Imogen Cunningham and Twinka here), fellow Portlander Susan Seubert (with a current fine art portrait of Twinka), to name a few. I invited her to come into the studio and participate as a model in my most current work entitled 'DEEP in Between', which she'd seen at the Photo Lucida show. She was on board and we set a time to get together to play in the 'sandbox'. Thoughts about end of life, tranquility, energy, play and power were some of the themes we explored. I am always inspired and excited to collaborate with new people and the enigmatic Twinka was no exception.

Surfacing from a new project it's always a thrill to show new work to fresh eyes. As a Photo Lucida participant I'll be showing my new work at an event this Thursday, April 23rd from 6 - 9pm

My latest project 'DEEP in Between' will be shared along with the work of over one hundred photographers at the Portland Art Museum - Fields Ballroom - 1219 SW Park Avenue. My work will be on display between 7 - 8pm but I encourage you to come for the whole time and immerse yourself in pictures. FREE and open to the public.

Andy Batt, Candace Dobro and Jodie Steen combined their strengths as photographers, writers and educators to pull together relevant skill building concepts, illustrations and examples for growing photographers. They included the voices and imagery from nine professional photographers and mined them for advice from technology, tools, techniques and aesthetics. I was featured as one of said photographers.

Geared towards serious photo enthusiasts who aim to take their shooting from automatic to mindfully manual. This book is filled with powerful gems to improve your understanding about how the mechanics of the camera work but how to stretch your creative thought process to see the world in a new way when behind the lens.

I know a fair amount about photography and was still delighted to learn new concepts, trends and ideas myself.

Yup one of my favorite days is fast approaching. I'll have a marvelous selfie of Francisco and I in the 8th Annual Day of the Dead Show at Guardino Gallery. Francisco and I are planning to get all suited up Sugar Skull style so be sure to drop by from the opening night Thursday, September 25th from 6-9. The show will be up and haunting the front of the gallery through the end of October.
