Mindi and Todd’s wedding was absolutely my favorite so far. Everyone was fun to shoot with and be around, the bride and groom were glowing, the weather was beautiful, all was right with the world!

This wedding is a shining example of  the importance of taking some time out for your photographer. I grabbed the bride and groom before the reception, and we spent about an hour alone to get these beautiful shots.

McNabb

The McNabb wedding was held in the Emerald Room at The Makoy center in Hilliard.

We didn’t do an entire “engagement session” so I didn’t do a post for these photos – but wanted to include them here! This is one of those occasions where I said “I’m here signing contracts anyway let’s shoot a few frames for your engagement” because I just can’t stand for there not to be engagement photos of some kind!

Sometimes mom has to pin flowers on more than the groom. In this case her husband, the father of the bride!

OK the parents lit the candles pre-ceremony. Don’t ask me why I put the processional next to that photo. I just did. And here it is.

I love to take “American Gothic” inspired wedding photos, even if they are from behind!

This is not a double exposure, or photoshop trick. It was a happy mistake! How did it happen? The flash fired and then a very long exposure followed, during which I moved the camera (in frustration, I may have stomped my foot even) and apparently held it for long enough to burn in an ambient exposure. Neat!

During a duct tape rescue to a rental shoe, I discovered the groom’s lucky sock – which had seen better days!

The curtain in that room creates magic bokeh for photographers. So pretty it makes me want to buy one!

I stole the bride and groom away from the reception for a quick photo alone. I love how it came out. The groom looks dreamily in love.

I have no idea what the conversation about, but it must have been hilarious!

These programs were great, something you don’t see every day.

To the brides to be who are deciding between bubbles and bird seed my vote goes to bubbles for photographic opportunities alone!

Martinez

This couple decided to get married very last minute, right before he was to go on deployment. They planned everything in a matter of days, and were married at a friends home. They weren’t planning on having a photographer. I wouldn’t hear of it!

This was the first wedding I ever shot. I keep it online because it’s a shining example of how beautiful your wedding photographs can be, regardless of what kind of wedding you have. Even if your location is as simple as a friend’s home, and you only had 3 days to plan, it is still your wedding day – and should be memorialized by a professional!

These images were captured with film and converted to digital.

These are my favorite dress photos to date. I love how it’s lines even the light shining through match up perfectly with the curtains.

This is her daughter, this photo is the cutest!

I really love this shot. He was standing there so still, so obviously dying of anticipation. I have the shot without the children running by, but it has far less impact!

Each mom got a rose

The brides mother passed away not long after the wedding. I was so glad I got this beautiful photograph of her smile for her daughter before that happened.

She was the definition of a beaming bride!

Daniels

Michael and Robbie Daniels are like family to me. So this is one of the few weddings out there I would have attended just to be there. When I found out I was going to be able to be their wedding photographer I was tickled pink!

Unfortunately same sex marriage is not legal in the state of Ohio, but that does not mean you can’t have a wedding! Michael and Robbie actually got legally married in Iowa prior to their ceremony here in Ohio. Yes, you can do that!

You may notice there are no posed photographs from this wedding. That is because I was explicitly told if I tried to take those kind of photos I would be packed up and shipped to Mars. Or something like that…

The ceremony and reception were at The Bluestone (formerly BoMA) which is one of the most beautiful venues in Columbus.

We just happened to take this snapshot at an event together a year or two earlier… and look where it ended up. I was so happy to see all those wine bottles with my photos on them! I still have my (albeit empty) bottle!

I never knew what Scottish thistle looked like until this wedding. It much prettier than “thistle” implies!

The ceremony, which was very non traditional and beautiful. I will have to ask what went on, and update, because I am not certain with some of the rituals.

My favorite wedding photographs are usually taken right after the ceremony. I am particularly fond of hugs – this is one of my favorites!

This is as close to a posed shot as I got (remember I was not allowed or I’d be shipped to Mars) they were posing for someone else!

Chris prepared, and you could tell. His toast was great!

First dance – my favorite part of weddings. I cry every single time! You could do the hokey pokey and I would cry at your first dance.

Although it was not legal for Michael and Robbie to get married in Columbus, Mayor Coleman sent his regards with a certificate of recognition. I thought that was pretty awesome!

When mom Deanna called me to photograph these two, I had visions of cute little angels sleeping as if on a cloud for their portraits. They on the other hand, had other plans! If we wanted angelic we definitely should have tried to capture it before they learned to walk!

As is the case with any baby portrait session, you have to just “go with the flow” and work with what ever it is the babies feel like doing at the moment!

I was worn out afterward, but we definitely had fun!

Do I Photograph Gay Weddings? YES! Why wouldn’t I?

When I first became a professional photographer, it came to my attention that a lot of photographers not only refuse to photograph gay weddings, but will also discourage others from photographing them. I felt this “pressure to conform” from everywhere within straight photography circles. I have plenty of personal stories involving this type of discrimination against the gay community, and many friends and clients have shared with me stories about these close-minded photographers. Photographers refusing to photograph same-sex marriages makes no sense at all to me, and below i’ll explain why.

My story as a gay wedding photographer:

In the beginning of my career when I was looking for advice on all sorts of things, I voiced on a pro-photographer forum that I do, in fact, photograph gay weddings. I asked advice on exactly what I am doing now – blogging about the subject to make sure the gay community knows I do offer this service. I wasn’t asking for a huge debate but boy did I get one! I received some good feedback, but most of it was definitely negative and disturbing. I was told I should keep the gay wedding photography in it’s own section of my website, away from the rest of my wedding photos. This was and is, to me, the exact opposite of right. Then it started to really hit me hard, when the follow-up posts started to roll in.

I was told that my website as it stood with gay wedding photography prominently mingling with the straight wedding photography – was “alienating my straight clients” who “don’t want to look at gay wedding photographs,” and that if I did not change things I was committing “career suicide.” One “helpful” forum member  ”Your galleries are full of weird polygamous families, -” among other things.

This conversation was long, and involved many people, most of whom shared a similar opinion to the poster mentioned above. I was crushed.

The stories of my gay wedding couples:

Every single gay couple I have spoken with who has tried to recruit a photographer for their wedding in Columbus Ohio has horror stories. I attend a lot of events, and the subject comes up more often than you would think.

I was told of a High Street studio owner who was very nice on the phone. The studio owner invited this potential client to their studio, and as any professional would be, was warm, inviting and absolutely accommodating until the “yes, it is a gay wedding” came out. The photographer replied, “I don’t believe in that” and turned their back on the customer! Another couple was actually preached to on the telephone! Most couples call 10 or so photographers, and after every kind of rejection and insult imaginable, give up and revert to letting Uncle Bob (who may or may not want to attend due to his “beliefs”) photograph the wedding for them because no one else will.

My take:

As photographers, I feel we owe a respect to our craft to just take pictures. We are not political lobbyists or religious leaders. We are observers and documentary artists. It is not our place to judge whether the scene we view in our viewfinder is right or wrong, or who is allowed partake in the activity we are documenting. We are there to preserve memories – this is the very basis of our trade. Why would we cloud our art with our own preconceived notions, or what society at large has to say for things? Shouldn’t our photographs just depict the truth? A snapshot of what is going on here and now? Gay weddings are going on whether you like it or not. Your refusal to photograph them does not make them stop happening.

I am willing to photograph just about any kind of wedding you can imagine. I don’t think you’ll see me jumping out of  any planes or scuba diving with couples though. Not because I disagree with scuba weddings, but because I am too scared of sharks and falling to my death.

Is this career suicide? I guess we will see. Personally I feel like the people who feel “alienated” by my stance on the subject, or the beautiful photos I have taken of same sex couples, or polygamous couples, probably are not the right customers for me in the first place. I refuse to sell my soul to make money from people who want to hate others.

Think.

• Would you have turned down Ellen DeGeneres if she called you up gushing “I want you to be the photographer at my SUPER GAY WEDDING!” because she’s gay? Regardless of her obvious wealth and the press you would receive from being her photographer?
• Interracial marriage was banned not so long ago, would you turn Halle Berry if she called you up and asked you to photograph her wedding  because she was marrying a white guy?
• I don’t like Justin Beiber’s music. But I wouldn’t refuse to photograph his tour, or even his head shot!
• I do not agree with most of the beliefs of the Hindu religion but I would never dream of turning down the chance to photograph a Hindu wedding!
• An abundance of pink is not my favorite thing to photograph next to a white gown, but I don’t turn down a couple because the bridesmaids will all be wearing a hot pink dress!

We are all just human beings

Photographers would do well to adopt the philosophy that we are all just human beings. Could you imagine being a couple trying to navigate the hectic events that are involved in planning a wedding – and having vendors hang up on you because of your religion? How about your race? Stop seeing gay couples as gay couples. They are just couples, just like any other. They have feelings too. I hope that this blog reaches just one photographer and changes the way they do things, even if it is to just be courteous in turning down a job. There is no need to rub salt in the wound. I just want people to think.

If they turn you down, you know who to call!

If all the other Columbus Ohio wedding photographers want to refuse to take pictures for gay couples, that’s more business for me. I would be just as happy if I photographed nothing but gay weddings; it makes no difference to me. To all the same sex couples out there, if they turn you down, I am always here! I am a proud member of the community, and would be honored to be included in your very special day.

Teen Identity – I Signed The Pledge

I recently found an ad in one of my industry magazines, Rangefinder, for a company called Teen Identity. It didn’t say much as far as what the organization was about, but the imagery struck me. There were photos that told a story about teens being sold in to the sex trade. Whether these girls were actually affected by this issue or not, I do not know. I did have to go and check out the site to see what it was all about.

Teen Identity is an organization dedicated to promoting a paradigm shift in the concept of beauty for teens. The daily visual reinforcement of the “ideal” that teenagers go through today is worse than it’s ever been. Models, actors, musicians, everyone seems to look supernatural. It’s hard to imagine how an “average” girl might feel beautiful in this type of environment!

There is a pledge for photographers to sign, that says we commit to this cause and will do our part. I cannot wait to get started! As a plus size woman, who knows all to well what it’s like to struggle with weight and self esteem, I have always wanted a way to empower and give back. This seems like the perfect opportunity!

Same Photographer – New Brand!

Hello all!

Please stay tuned while I shape up the website for my new brand. Most people know me as the owner of Devyne Productions, I have been around for years photographing people, places, and happenings around Columbus under that business name. As my business grew I found it moving in two different directions between my commercial work and my personal clients. So A.Photographic was created! You can still get all of your business image needs from Devyne Productions, but all of my portraiture and wedding business will now run through this site.

In the coming weeks I will be adding lots of great information on my services and products, my style, things I am getting involved with, and of course terrific sales!
