Thera, Danny and I went for a short trip around downtown Columbus and Centennial park for their engagement shoot. We almost got rained out, and the lack of sunshine was a slight disappointment – but the photos still turned out beautifully! I can’t wait to shoot their wedding in September!

Brooke and Amber are a wonderful gay couple who went all the way to Niagara Falls, New York, to get legally married. They are having a Columbus Ohio wedding in the fall, but wanted me to be there for their legal marriage ceremony – which unfortunately due to Ohio laws they could not have at home and turned in to a destination wedding – but I was happy to oblige! Stay tuned for their larger wedding with family and friends in the fall!

The ladies were married at Bridal Chapel of Niagara, in Niagara Falls New York. The chapel was beautiful, and the ceremony went very well. We did have some issues with the photography, see my post about that if you are planning a similar ceremony before you make plans! Check that out here:

It was a blustery February day, of course we’ve had a mild winter this year until there are weddings and driving involved – then it all comes down! We woke up to plenty of snow, wind, and temperatures in the teens brrrr! I stayed in the same hotel so I could get photos of all of the preparations and pre-wedding jitters. The bride traveled with me to the chapel so that her future wife would not see her until she walked down the aisle, and we had a laugh about the big scary bridge over to the falls area where their ceremony was to be held. That thing was scary enough without snow!

We arrived to the chapel, and unknowingly parked on the sidewalk Amber was whisked away in to the bridal room to make her final preparations, while the bridesmaids signed the official marriage license. A triumphant moment for this couple, it’s just a piece of paperwork for most couples, but to a same sex couple just the ability to sign that document and be recognized officially is a major moment!

The ladies exchanged vows they had written themselves, which as usual got me weepy (I cry at everyone’s wedding, I am a hopeless romantic) but I also got a giggle as Amber’s included “I can’t believe I talked you in to marrying me!” The rings were exchanged, vows sealed with a kiss, and hooray the ladies are officially married!

We did not have access to the cathedral section of the chapel, sadly, but the chapel was very pretty on it’s own. We grabbed some photos inside, ran outside for a picture in front of the door, back inside to warm up, and back out again for a wide shot. It was quite comical really, we had shoe switching, coat grabbing, and plenty of shivering along the way. As the ceremony was held in the middle of a snow storm, the bride chose not to go down to the falls for photos in a dress and heels… and we didn’t blame her!

Congratulations Amber and Brooke – I cannot wait until the Columbus ceremony so we can do it all again with family and friends!

Destination weddings have become very popular over the past 10 years. Who can blame couples for wanting to go somewhere beautiful, exciting, exotic, whatever the case may be, for their special day? It’s become especially popular for gay couples, who are traveling to states where they can be legally wed. It seems that a destination wedding would be easy and breezy, it’s one-stop, all-inclusive wedding extravaganza! Grab your suitcases, and they will take care of the rest, right?

Not exactly.

All of the destination hot-spots have popular venues. These venues do the majority of their business with out of town guests. All of the arrangements are made via phone and email. You have to trust the person you have yet to meet with the most important day in your life! It is easy if you are just running to Vegas to elope, but if you are planning a full on wedding in a strange place, things can get tricky.

There are several issues you can run in to; every state has it’s own licensing requirements, you have to trust photos of venues you have never actually seen, you can’t taste the cake before you buy it, and a big one – you may not be able to bring your own photographer.

These venues, chapels in specific, all employ every helper they need for an event. They have agreements with these vendors, and these agreements benefit the vendors – not the clients. It may end up being the case that if you do not like the photography, or the food, you will just have to find another venue.

With photography specifically, some chapels make it nearly impossible for you to bring in an outside photographer. If not impossible, they make it expensive. Some venues will ask for things that you will find outrageous. Some vendors will not be nice about it either.

My own experience

I have had two chapel weddings get kinks in plans. One was in Gatlinburg, Tennesse, the other was in Niagara Falls, New York. In both of these events, we ran in to a nearly identical list of issues.

- Photographer must be licensed

- Photographer must carry 1 million dollars in insurance

- Photographer must sign a contract agreeing to not use photographs commercially

- Client must pay outside vendor fee

I’ve been in business nearly a decade, and the ONLY time I have run in to these things has been destination chapel weddings. Local venues NEVER ask for any of this – though sometimes I do hear about outside caterer fees for venues with in house caterers.

Make no mistake about it, these restrictions are put in to place so that you will use THEIR preferred vendors. They will give you a laundry list of excuses and reasons, but it all boils down to that one point. They work with their vendors, they are in business together to make money, and they do not like to lose that money to other people. As a business owner I do not have a huge problem with this, I know how it is. What I do take issue with, is that during the planning process this can make a wedding couple unhappy – and they should never be made unhappy!

If you want to just go with their photographer – great! You should have no problem! The fact is though, these photographers are very “traditional” in style, they have a pretty set list of shots they run you through – and that’s what you get – period. They do not go to extra locations to get those awe inspiring photos most couples want, they do not capture your preparations, candid shots… etc…etc… If you want that kind of photography you are going to have to hire your own photographer. Whether you fly them in, or hire someone in town, you will need to know a thing or two about the process to make it a smooth one. Let’s go in to some details about these issues…

Impossible Issue: Photographer Must Be Licensed

There is no requirement in any state (that I am aware of) for a photographer to be licensed. There is most certainly no federal requirement in the United States. We are not food service workers, doctors, or contractors dealing with hazardous materials. These are the types of businesses that require licensing – and for good reason. There is no reason for the government to regulate photographers, therefore, we do not have to go through a licensing process. This point goes to my “impossible” list. How am I to present you with a license, if there is no process for me to obtain one? This gives the client a caveat they cannot overcome – and I see that as railroading them in to what the venue wants.

What To Do

This is one of the impossible ones, and it could be a deal breaker. In my experiences, one chapel stuck to this rule – and gave the client no indication as to what “license” I actually needed to present. Most likely because, they know there is no license. They expect you to just go with their photographer because your photographer doesn’t have necessary “credentials.” In this type of instance, sadly, your options are slim. Either go with their photography package, or find another venue. My client did the latter, and found a venue who did not require a license (they did however, require insurance, and a contract from the photographer – and that’s the best she got in Gatlinburg). My other experience with this requirement went differently. The client and I both very plainly told the venue there was no licensing requirement, and they let it go. They went ahead with the other requirements on their list and dropped this one. This may be the case for you as well. Stand your ground, and let them know you are educated on the matter. If you can get this requirement stricken from the list – the rest can be resolved.

Photographer Must Carry 1 Million Dollars Liability Insurance

Insurance, like licensing, is something photographers are not required by law to carry. It is not like driving your car and being legally bound to insure it. Most of us will carry insurance on our equipment because it is expensive to replace, and accidents do happen. Liability insurance is another issue. Local venues just don’t ask for it (at least in Ohio, and in my experience) so most of us probably just don’t carry it or think about it. Liability insurance covers the venue we are photographing, should we break something. I know you are thinking “what is the chance a photographer will do 1 million dollars of damage?” And you are right to wonder. Short of setting the place on fire and burning it down, I have a hard time coming  up with an answer myself! This is just a deterrent  in my opinion, again, to get you to use their photographer.

What To Do

Looking for another destination venue is probably not going to help in this instance. I think this is a very widely used policy in the destination wedding world. The good news is, this insurance is not that expensive, and one can obtain it over the phone in most cases. You can even get 1 day policies from some insurance companies. Again experiences vary with this policy for me. In Gatlinburg the client was able to get the venue to drop the issue, as she was insistent there was no way she was using their photographer – and that she felt it unnecessary for me to carry that lofty amount of insurance. They caved. In Niagara Falls, however, they stuck to this like glue. I had several conversations with them, and made sure I knew exactly what type of document they needed before I made calls to insurance companies. I was able to obtain the coverage in the middle of the night, and have it faxed to the chapel. I got a year long policy, and had a confirmation of insurance with the date of the wedding, venue address and name, and my information, sent to them. This is doable! Might a photographer be reluctant to go through this for a wedding? It’s possible. I think that most photographers who have done destination weddings will know the drill, and would be accommodating. I would suggest that you as the client pay for the insurance if it is obtained for one day for your event only – as most venues do not require it and we do not usually have to have it.

Photographer Must Sign No Use Contract

This is one of those issues where a matter of policy does not necessarily jibe with true legality – and I dislike it a great deal. Legally speaking, a photographer cannot commercially sell photographs of a property without a release. Being private property, the property owner has the right to ask you not to photograph it while you are on the property. Meaning, you can step off the property onto the public sidewalk outside and photograph to your heart’s content – but if they do not want your camera inside, they can tell you no. Again, if you take these photographs outside, they cannot be sold commercially without a release. Honestly, it would take an entire post to explain all of this in detail. As to this contractual agreement the venue is asking for, they do not ask for the photographer not to commercially sell  the photographs – they will ask that you not show them on your website or anything. As with the other policies I find no  good reason for this but to deter the customer from using their own photographer. I am sure that venues will hit you with some mumbo jumbo about their copyrighted chapel decor, much like malls who do not allow photography. But really. Give me a break.

What To Do

This is something your photographer will really need to handle with the venue themselves. This contract is signed by the photographer, so they really need to negotiate it with the venue. It will be up to the photographer what rights they are willing to give up to their own photographs as that is what it boils down to. My experiences once again varied with this. The Niagara Falls chapel did not require a contract, though I offered one if they would just let me shoot the event! The Gatlinburg chapel did require me to sign an agreement, and as it was presented to me it specified that I not use the images AT ALL. This I would not agree to. I made the venue write it up so that it stated that I could not commercially sell the images. This gave me the right to put them on my website to show my work. This is important to me, and will most likely be important to your photographer as well. Be very careful with this one, it may render you unable to even share photos on facebook! Read what you sign, and your photographer should do the same! If  they are specifying that you and your photographer both cannot use the photos at all anywhere, what is the point?

Client Must Pay Outside Vendor Fee

Ah, my favorite, the outside vendor fee. This seems to me to be the last ditch effort to squeeze  the client. If you have overcome all of the other hurdles they have put in front of you, you still have to be out more money to the venue so you can bring someone in to take your pictures. I have no other explanation for this one besides “fine, you can use someone else, but you’ll still pay our photographer.” The fees will vary. I’ve heard of fees up to $300.00 in Las Vegas wedding chapels. They seem (coincidence?) to go right along the scale of the photographer’s fees in the venue. For me, Gatlinburg did not charge a fee, but Niagara Falls did. The photographer fee if you used their photographer was $199.00 (with a CD of images) – the outside vendor fee was $125.00.

What To Do

Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do but pay the fee. The policy is certainly questionable ethically, but it’s a policy, and the only way around it is to pony up the cash. I wish I had some additional advice.

Ultimately, it is a question of how important your photography is to you. If you are OK with the standard shots you will receive from the chapel, just hire their photographer. The images I’ve seen from the places I’ve checked out are certainly not bad ones. The photographers seem competent, the images are well exposed, and capture the moment. If you are dead-set on having your dream photographer take those pictures, even if you have to fly them to Jamaica – then you do that! I hope that I have armed you with some information that will be helpful – as sometimes it is a bumpy road!

I did destination wedding photography at the Bridal Chapel of Niagara falls for a gay couple who traveled there to get legally married, as Ohio does not allow same sex marriage. The experience was, quite a story. The venue was beautiful, and the ceremony went without a hitch – but the planning process got very heated. Overall, would I recommend the venue? Yes. But I would have to tell a cautionary tale along with the referral. And here is the long version:

The couple hired me to photograph their Columbus wedding ceremony, which will be held with and for family and friends later this year. One of the brides thought there was no way that I would be able to photograph their Niagara Falls ceremony due to budget constraints, but her fiance contacted me in secret – and we made plans to have me there as a surprise! It was such a romantic gesture, it still makes me smile These plans were fairly last minute. The wedding was on Saturday and we got started on maybe… Tuesday or Wednesday.

As I have never seen the venue and I like to plan, I went online to find photographs. I could not find any pictures of this place on the inside, and only one or two shots of the outside. The venue website did not (and still does not) work for me, so I emailed them to ask them if they could send me a shot or two of the venue… and asked if there were any special guidelines for photography I needed to be aware of. And then the madness began.

First thing, instead of just answering my email, the wedding coordinator Diana calls one of the brides – the one who was supposed to be surprised – and hits her with a flurry of requirements for me to shoot the wedding. Of course, I didn’t tell her it was a surprise, I didn’t really think about it. But the surprise was ruined nonetheless. The other bride then called her and explained the surprise being ruined, and got no apology for that, or that she made the bride a bit frantic. They had a conversation that was apparently not very cordial, as by the time I was called, both brides were nearly in tears and stressed out. I told them to be calm, and I called the venue to make necessary arrangements.

My conversations with the people who run this venue were all terrible. While I realize I am not the customer, I still felt they were unprofessional and rude. They had very condescending tones, and seemed angry with all of us. When I asked what I needed to do I was given a rant about how they don’t ever allow outside photographers, and that the church, not the chapel company (they run their business out of an actual church that is separate from them) had the policies they were imposing. She told me that they were supposed to have a simple no fuss ceremony, and acted like we were putting her out by making it complicated at all (having an outside photographer is not complicated). She told me I needed a license, and 1 million dollars in insurance. I explained to her photographers do not require licensing, and she dropped this point, but said she would have to contact the church to see if they would allow me in to the venue without the insurance policy. I was told “I don’t even know why I’m talking to YOU” as if I shouldn’t butt my nose in to the matter. I explained to her I was calling because I am the one who needs to provide them information, and that the brides were stressing which they should not be. This was sometime around 3pm. We were told that she would get back to us “in the evening” about whether “the church would allow it.”

We did not find out until the next day, that “the church” would not allow me inside without insurance. They kept apologizing about that, passing the buck, when I knew it was their frackas. I am a very blunt and straight forward person, especially when it comes to business matters. I made it very plain to her that this couple would NOT be hiring THEIR photographer under ANY circumstance, and that they could stop trying to rail them in to it.

So in the end we find out in the middle of the night on Thursday that I definitely needed to have the 1 million in insurance. I call my insurance agent, and I get the policy in place that moment. In defiance even, I was so fired up after all of this going on! I just kept thinking the whole time, I just want my clients to be happy – don’t you want the same?! I email my insurance rider to the chapel, and call it a night. By the time I get up in the morning (well, afternoon… I am a wee bit nocturnal) I’ve got several missed calls, and texts from the poor brides saying they are in tears again. Unacceptable! Apparently the document I sent was not good enough for them. At this point I call again, and speak to the man (it’s a husband and wife operation I believe) I think his name was EJ – not positive. Now this guy… would not let me speak. The last thing on earth you should do when in a heated situation with me is talk over me. We had a bit of a spat because he wouldn’t let me get a word in and I interrupted him not so nicely and told him what I thought about that. I get to the T what information he needs, and have it sent over. This is all taking place the day before the wedding!

A friend of the brides and I collectively donated money to the photographer’s fee, as it was an unexpected cost. Well that wasn’t good enough either! They told the brides they needed to pay cash! Honestly I felt this was just one more way of putting an obstacle in the way. They knew the budget was tight, and I think that they thought if they asked for cash it wouldn’t be available. I could be wrong… but that’s sure how it seemed.

It just seemed like they did EVERYTHING in their power to keep me from taking those pictures. I was told “you are lucky to even be allowed in here, EVERY other chapel in the United States would not allow it.” My reply was “No sir, that is not true… I have worked at other chapels in the United States and I have NEVER experienced something like this!” At one point I asked if guests were allowed to take pictures, I was told no – not even cell phones. But when the bridal party went to look at the venue, cell phone photos were taken and no one said a word.

The story went from “we allow outside photographers BUT…” to “we usually don’t allow ANY outside photographers even GUESTS BUT… since this happened last minute we are making an exception” and I am not really sure what the ACTUAL policy is. There was absolutely no verbiage in the contract, or receipt since there was no formal contract, making stipulations regarding photography. There was also no information regarding this policy on their website (if it works – I got nothing from their site but loading and disappearing flash windows).

The brides started to feel they were being singled out because they were gay – which is awful. Really no couple should ever be put through such madness, and if there is some conflict it should be handled with kid gloves. They should be nice. “The customer is always right” should have been the attitude. Not the confrontational, unprofessional tone they took.

To be fair, I can be abrasive, and I was. That’s no excuse for how they talked to the brides though, and I have read online reviews with the same type of complaint.

Now, all of that being said, once the entire fiasco was resolved, the wedding day went very well. The couple who run the place were super nice to all of us, the officiant was awesome, the venue was beautiful, there were no awkward moments (which I feared a great deal after all of the phone issues) and everyone walked away happy.

I think that this venue is just used to cookie cutter, this is our process and we don’t go outside of it, elopement style weddings. I think if you throw a wrench in to their routine, it triggers something in them. Should  you be on your way to that venue without your own photographer in tow, I am sure you would not come across this type of issue. But I feel strongly enough about my experience, and the experience of my couple – that I would not feel right if I did not write about it.

Do I Recommend? 

Yes – especially for gay couples it’s a beautiful location the drive is manageable and the price is right from Ohio. But… recommendation comes with warning about my experience especially for couples seeking outside photographers

The Good:

- Location is great! Within 1 minute drive and a short walk to Niagara Falls

- Chapel is beautiful, authentic stained glass and wonderful woodwork

- This is an actual church with a cathedral. I am not sure if the cathedral is available for “chapel weddings” it may be members only, but this is not some flunky looking house type venue – it is authentic

- Pricing is very reasonable

- Staff is very friendly in person 

The Bad:

- Outside photographers may not be allowed at all, an exception may have been made for me. Please confirm this UPON BOOKING!

- 125.00 outside vendor fee IF they allow your photographer in

- The lighting was a bit weird, and this is something only your photographer would notice. I am a natural light photographer especially during ceremonies… and it was not conducive. There is a mixture of incandescent, fluorescent, and ambient light in the chapel with a very bright overhead light that cast shadows on the faces of the couple

The Ugly: 

- If you go against the grain with the wedding coordinators, they get nasty, and it becomes stressful fast on the phone. I am not the first to experience this google reviews about ANY venue you choose before settling on your place.

The McNabb wedding was held in the Emerald Room at The Makoy center in Hilliard.

We didn’t do an entire “engagement session” so I didn’t do a post for these photos – but wanted to include them here! This is one of those occasions where I said “I’m here signing contracts anyway let’s shoot a few frames for your engagement” because I just can’t stand for there not to be engagement photos of some kind!

This is not a double exposure, or photoshop trick. It was a happy mistake! How did it happen? The flash fired and then a very long exposure followed, during which I moved the camera (in frustration, I may have stomped my foot even) and apparently held it for long enough to burn in an ambient exposure. Neat!

During a duct tape rescue to a rental shoe, I discovered the groom’s lucky sock – which had seen better days!

The curtain in that room creates magic bokeh for photographers. So pretty it makes me want to buy one!

I stole the bride and groom away from the reception for a quick photo alone. I love how it came out. The groom looks dreamily in love.

I have no idea what the conversation about, but it must have been hilarious!

These programs were great, something you don’t see every day.

To the brides to be who are deciding between bubbles and bird seed my vote goes to bubbles for photographic opportunities alone!

This couple decided to get married very last minute, right before he was to go on deployment. They planned everything in a matter of days, and were married at a friends home. They weren’t planning on having a photographer. I wouldn’t hear of it!

This was the first wedding I ever shot. I keep it online because it’s a shining example of how beautiful your wedding photographs can be, regardless of what kind of wedding you have. Even if your location is as simple as a friend’s home, and you only had 3 days to plan, it is still your wedding day – and should be memorialized by a professional!

These images were captured with film and converted to digital.

These are my favorite dress photos to date. I love how it’s lines even the light shining through match up perfectly with the curtains.

I really love this shot. He was standing there so still, so obviously dying of anticipation. I have the shot without the children running by, but it has far less impact!

The brides mother passed away not long after the wedding. I was so glad I got this beautiful photograph of her smile for her daughter before that happened.

She was the definition of a beaming bride!

Michael and Robbie Daniels are like family to me. So this is one of the few weddings out there I would have attended just to be there. When I found out I was going to be able to be their wedding photographer I was tickled pink!

Unfortunately same sex marriage is not legal in the state of Ohio, but that does not mean you can’t have a wedding! Michael and Robbie actually got legally married in Iowa prior to their ceremony here in Ohio. Yes, you can do that!

You may notice there are no posed photographs from this wedding. That is because I was explicitly told if I tried to take those kind of photos I would be packed up and shipped to Mars. Or something like that…

The ceremony and reception were at The Bluestone (formerly BoMA) which is one of the most beautiful venues in Columbus.

We just happened to take this snapshot at an event together a year or two earlier… and look where it ended up. I was so happy to see all those wine bottles with my photos on them! I still have my (albeit empty) bottle!

The ceremony, which was very non traditional and beautiful. I will have to ask what went on, and update, because I am not certain with some of the rituals.

My favorite wedding photographs are usually taken right after the ceremony. I am particularly fond of hugs – this is one of my favorites!

Although it was not legal for Michael and Robbie to get married in Columbus, Mayor Coleman sent his regards with a certificate of recognition. I thought that was pretty awesome!

When mom Deanna called me to photograph these two, I had visions of cute little angels sleeping as if on a cloud for their portraits. They on the other hand, had other plans! If we wanted angelic we definitely should have tried to capture it before they learned to walk!

As is the case with any baby portrait session, you have to just “go with the flow” and work with what ever it is the babies feel like doing at the moment!

I was worn out afterward, but we definitely had fun!
