Catholic education and the environment in which it operates are undergoing dramatic changes. Shifting demographics, economics, technology and expectations of “customers” – parents, students, alumni, supporters – are all affecting the success of schools. Schools able to recognize and adapt to the changing market are the ones surviving and, in many cases, thriving. Those not adapting are closing.

Last week we held our annual three day Summer Seminar on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. If you missed out, here's what happened!

This year we were fortunate enough to not only have beautiful weather all three days we were at Notre Dame, but we also were fortunate to be in the brand new Morris Inn. The original Morris Inn opened in 1952 and was a campus landmark - situated basically on campus just a few feet away from the view of the dome at the top of this post. The new Morris Inn is built on the site of the old one, and is a beautiful, modern hotel complete with a bar (Rohr's), a restaurant (Sorin's), and the ballroom that we held all of our breakfasts, lunches, and dinners in. For those that remember the old Morris Inn, the new version is a big upgrade!

One of the highlights of each Advancement Partners Summer Seminar is the lineup of guest keynote speakers. Each of these speakers has a unique perspective on Catholic education and fundraising, whether they work directly in Catholic secondary advancement, Catholic school leadership, or higher education advancement. These keynotes are given after a lunch or dinner, and allow time for Q&A afterwards.

The theme of this year’s Advancement Partners (API) Summer Seminar is “Best Practices and the Model Development Department”. In the over 25 years we have been working in the business of institutional advancement we have noticed that no two development departments are alike. There is a reason for that – every development department encounters unique situations and challenges. However, over the years we have come to realize that there are certain core principles, or practices, that every development department should follow.
