The Future of Social Media and Marketing

2016-11-03T07:01:00.004-07:00

I hate to say this, but I've seen the future of social media and marketing and it includes a lot of video. Hey everyone, this is Bob Cargill, it is Monday, October 10, 2016, and am here in the Assayed River National Wildlife Refuge....beautiful day, beautiful afternoon, beautiful evening, and my wife is holding the camera...thanks, Barb, for recording this for me...in my statement, that I've seen the future of social media and marketing and it includes a lot of video...and I said, I hate to say this.

Why? Because I'm a copywriter, I'm content person, I'm a writer by trade...but I’m a social media marketer and I follow the trends and if you, like me, follow the trends, you know video is emerging and becoming very, very popular no matter what social media channel you are on.

There is Face book Live, there is Periscope live, and, yes, live-streaming video is the ultimate, but second-best is video like this where you record it, sure, you could edit it and repurpose it across a number of channels and then you have great content that for three reasons (I’m going to give you those reasons in a minute) is very, very popular...probably more so than pictures and much more so than just text alone.

Again I stand behind content, copy and just text alone because that's what I do, that is my thing, but I couple it with great images, with video...variety is the spice of life on social media. You have to remember that...video...three reasons why it's so big...live-streaming video...you have the immediacy. Okay. The fact that it is real-time, that people could be watching you in the moment, that's big.

If we're live-streaming. We're not right now. Two other reasons...so the two out of the three reasons video like this is important...and live-streaming video includes all three reasons, including immediacy...authenticity, the fact that you’re looking at me, hearing words right from my mouth...that carries more credibility than if they were written words...or if they were text included in a graphic...the fact that I'm speaking to you and you see mean you hear me and you feel like you get to know me...that's authenticity, that makes video very, very powerful. And then there’s the transparency. Transparency Is the fact that if I mess up, I'm not editing it, folks. So again, live is even more popular, more trustworthy, if you will, because obviously you can edit that...I could edit this, but I won't...okay, this will come to you unedited later on today or tomorrow, so it's the transparency, it's the fact that what you see is what you get.

what you hear,

where I am, the fact that I told you Barbara, my wife, is holding the camera, the fact that I’m moving around now...that's transparency. It's also authenticity...and again, if this was live, it would be immediacy. Okay, now those are the three reasons live streaming and regular video are so, so popular right now and work so, so well on social media. Reasons that people don't do video: there’s a bunch of them. Okay. They are afraid what they look like...oh geez, should i wear a collared shirt or a t-shirt, a hat or no hat, glasses or contacts? People...they really over emphasize and pay way too much attention to how they're going to look. Remember, transparency, authenticity... very, very important. So don't overdo it in the preparations.

So that was how are you going to look? What am I going to say? Everyone’s afraid what am I going to say...especially if it's unedited, unscripted, this is, I have notes right here, I referred to them before I started, but if you notice, I'm not referring to them now. This is unscripted and it will be un-edited...so again...but people are afraid to do that...so fear is the biggest reason people don’t do video...fear of how they're going to look, fear of what they're going to say...let's go over a few more things...fear of the surroundings, concern of whether they should have props or should they be outdoors or indoors...so people are really concerned about that...then they're concerned about just the time it involves and the effort it involves.

Okay...for some people it’s lot harder and seemingly a much bigger effort to do a video than to write an article. Frankly, for me as a writer, I speak from a lot of experience, doing video is easier...Okay...because it's in the moment, it’s extemporaneous. So bottom line...let me make my point here...bottom line, video is really, really popular for many reasons on social media and in social media marketing. Video, because it’s transparent, because it's authentic, and if it's live-streaming video, it’s immediate, will surface in the content stream much quicker, much more pervasively than written words alone or pictures. Do video because it's an emerging trend, because it's going to help you personally and professionally, your brand and the company you work for. This is Bob Cargill, Monday, October 10, 2016, Assayed River National Wildlife Refuge. Beautiful afternoon. I hope you’re having a great day, I hope you have a great evening and a great work week. Thanks for tuning in. Bye-bye.

Facebook changes Trending Topics after criticism

2016-08-28T15:06:00.000-07:00

The social network adds a more automated design that strips human-written descriptions from its list of popular topics, following months of criticism over how it displayed news stories.

Facebook is changing up the way it shows you trending topics, the company said in a blog post Friday. Instead of describing the topic with a headline, the new automated format simply highlights the trend -- a word, phrase, hashtag, etc. -- without any frills or fuss. Anyone who wants to know what the hubbub is about can hover the cursor to pop up a small window with an associated story and source.

In place of the description, Facebook will now tell you how many people are talking about a given topic.

Why do this? Because, behind the scenes, there's been a real-life person at Facebook writing up those descriptions, and that takes time. Fully automating the process lifts that burden; instead of Facebook employees typing blurbs, a computer program can surface those essentials.

Facebook's also faced criticism over its trending topics service after twin stories from the tech blog Gizmodo alleged that the Trending topics team was allowing their political opinions to affect their judgment of what was and wasn't displayed on the list seen by its 1.7 billion active users. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company found no wrongdoing after an investigation into the issue, but that hasn't stopped many political blogs from claiming they're still being treated unfairly by the social networking giant.

Perhaps to avoid perception this move was in reaction to the controversy, Facebook says this plan's been in the works for a while. It also said trending topics are still personalized based on your tastes, and still relevant to world events.

Two men charged in Chicago shooting death

Two men charged in Chicago shooting death of Dwyane Wade's cousin

CHICAGO — Police charged two brothers who have deep ties to a gang with the shooting death of the cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade, officials said Sunday.

Nykea Aldridge, 32, a mother of four, was pushing a baby stroller Friday afternoon on Chicago's South Side when she was shot. Police said she was not the intended target of the shooting. Aldridge’s child was not struck by the gunfire.

Chicago has seen its murder toll skyrocket this year. The nation's third-largest city has recorded more homicides than New York and Los Angeles combined in 2016. Homicides were up nearly 50% for the first half of 2016 compared to the same period last year. Police have also already recovered 6,000 illegally possessed guns off the streets of Chicago this year.

Chicago Police say the vast majority of victims and assailants are on its Strategic Subject List, a predictive roster that the department generates by crunching arrest information, gang affiliation, shooting patterns and other data. The list includes about 1,400 individuals.

Johnson did not know if the suspects in Aldridge's killing were on the list at the time of the shooting.

Michael Phelps is the most decorated olympian in history

2016-08-28T12:48:00.000-07:00

Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps

Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 30, 1985) is an American former competitive swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 28 medals.

The American swimmer ended his career after his fifth Games, in Rio in 2016, where at the age of 31 he won a further five gold medals and a silver, taking his tally to 23 Olympic titles and 28 medals! A record unlikely to be beaten any time soon.

Diagnosed with Attention Deficit disorder, Phelps was directed towards swimming in 1992 at the age of just seven in order to provide him with an outlet for his unbounded energy. After that, his transformation into an unbeatable swimmer appeared inexorable, and he broke record after record as he rose through the age categories.

The Baltimore Bullet’s first Olympic appearance came in 2000 in Sydney when he was chosen for the US swim team at the age of just 15 – the youngest American swimmer selected for a Games in almost 70 years.

He failed to win a medal in Australia but it was clear that Sydney was just a learning experience and this was to prove no setback. A year later Phelps became the youngest male swimmer to break a world record with a win in the 400m freestyle at the 2001 World Aquatics Championship – a taste of future glory.

The next two years saw Phelps amass a haul of gold and silver medals at international swim meets and break numerous world records in the 200m and 400m individual medley races. His tally at the 2003 World Aquatic Championship of four golds and two silvers, along with five world records, set the scene for a thrilling performance at the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece.

Phelps did not disappoint. In his first event, the 400-meter individual medley, hewon with a world record time of 4:08.26 to take his first Olympic gold medal.

Though he lost out to Ian Thorpe in the 200m freestyle, the so-called “Race of the Century”, the following days saw the young American scoop gold in the 200m butterfly, the 4x200 freestyle relay, the 100m butterfly and the 4x100m medley. Six gold and two bronze medals meant Phelps had achieved the second-best performance at an Olympics Games – he was second only to the legendary swimmer of 1972, Mark Spitz.

Phelps’ home town duly named a street in his honour – The Michael Phelps Way.

THE BEIJING MASTERSTROKE

Come Beijing in 2008, following four years in which he won 17 World Championship gold medals, Phelps broke Spitz’s long-standing record. He won his eighth Olympic gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay – setting a new world record for good measure – with a little inspiration from Australian rival Ian Thorpe, who earlier declared such an achievement impossible. Phelps took note and stuck Thorpe’s statement on his locker.

By the time London 2012 came round Phelps was, like Usain Bolt, a global star – a brand in his own right – and had even set up a foundation in his own name to promote healthy living and fitness for children. Having earlier announced his retirement, the world waited with bated breath to see if The Flying Fish could become the most decorated Olympian of all time.

Despite some shocks at the Aquatics Centre – coming fourth in the 4x100m individual medley behind rising star Ryan Lochte and finishing second to Chad Le Clos of South Africa in the 200m butterfly – Phelps duly obliged.

A gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay, added to his 200m butterfly silver earlier that day, meant he had now surpassed Soviet-era gymnast Larisa Latynina’s record of 18 Olympic medals.

He went on to win his fifth 200m individual medley gold – a competition record – and secure another first in what he said was his last-ever individual race, the 200m butterfly. Phelps rounded off his career in style as part of the winning USA team in the 4x100m medley relay, in front of an ecstatic crowd.

It’s not clear what the Michael Phelps way will be from this point on, but with 22 Games medals to his name, including an astonishing 18 golds, his record as the most decorated Olympian of all time seems likely to last for at least the rest of his retirement.

RETIREMENT AND A VICTORIOUS COMEBACK

Phelps then announced that he was retiring. But the competition virus never left him, driving him to start training again in April 2014, with a view to competing at the Games in Rio. He cleared the first hurdle easily, at the US trials in Omaha at the end of June 2016, where the man who was already the most successful Olympian of all time celebrated his 31st birthday by qualifying brilliantly for three individual distances and three relays.

Thus did Michael Phelps find himself back in action at the Olympic Aquatics Centre in Barra de Tijuca. On 7 August, he played a decisive role in the second leg of the 4x100m freestyle relay, which saw the USA beat France and Australia. That made 19! On 9 August, Bob Bowman’s pupil won two new victories in the space of an hour: the 200m butterfly for the third time (after 2004 and 2008), and the 4x200m freestyle relay with the USA for the fourth time. So 20! And then 21! After the relay, he received a well-deserved ovation from the audience in the Olympic venue. Emerging from the water, Phelps sat on his starting block, shattered but satisfied. Aware of having become, in the space of an hour, one of the heroes of the Rio Games.

Better and better: on 11 August, Michel Phelps equalled the record of his compatriots, discus thrower Al Oerter and long jumper Carl Lewis, the only Olympians to win four consecutive victories in the same individual discipline, by winning the 200m medley for the fourth consecutive time. That made it 22! “This all started and began with one little dream as a kid to change the sport of swimming, try to do something nobody has ever done”, he said.

The next day, he finished as joint silver medallist with his favourite rivals Chad Le Clos and Laszlo Cseh, behind the young swimmer from Singapore, Joseph Schooling, in the 100m butterfly. “Chad and I have raced each other quite a few times in the last four years, and as for Laszlo and me... I can’t even remember the first time we competed against each other”, was his reaction. “So it’s kind of special, and a great way for me to finish my last individual race.” So 27 medals!

The end came on 13 August, with a highly appropriate team victory! The US won the 4x100m medley, with Phelps making a brilliant contribution with his two lengths of butterfly. And a final total of 23 titles and 28 medals!

“Being able to close the door on this sport how I wanted to — that’s why I’m happy now”, Phelps said after winning five more Olympic gold medals and a silver, in the Carioca pool. “I was a little kid with a dream, which turned into a couple of medals. Just being able to finish this way is special because now I’m able to start the next chapter in my life.”

US election: Has Donald Trump already blown it?

2016-08-25T23:56:00.000-07:00

Last summer, Donald Trump could do no wrong. What a difference a year makes

The summer of 2015 saw Trump generate so much early momentum behind his candidacy that he became almost unstoppable in his march towards the Republican presidential nomination. By Labor Day in early September, he had established a lead in the polls that rarely he relinquished.

The summer of 2016, by contrast, may well have made him unelectable as he pursues the presidency itself. By Labor Day, he could be so far behind that Hillary Clinton, hardly a popular candidate herself, would have to trip badly for him to stage a comeback

Already, the polls point towards the first Democratic hat-trick of three consecutive victories in presidential elections since the 1940s. As Politico reported last week: "No candidate in Donald Trump's position at this stage of the campaign has gone on to win the popular vote in November in the modern polling era.

Now will see the result what happening will be going on US election 2016
