How To Set Up A Facebook Page For Your Business

So let's say you have a business and you would like to tap into that pool of marketing that the Web 2.0 promises to deliver. The first step in enabling your company to migrate to a Web 2.0 image is to create a Facebook page for your enterprise.

This guide will show you how to set up your company's first Facebook page.

1 Go to Facebook
Facebook is the biggest social network in the world.

To go to the Facebook site click here.

2 The difference between a Facebook profile and a Facebook page
Facebook makes a clear distinction between profiles and pages.

A business can ONLY have a Facebook page. If a company sets a Facebook profile, its account will be deleted.

On a Facebook page, a company can only have fans. Only profiles have the ability to have and maintain friend lists.

Both Facebook pages and profiles can update their status, upload images, videos, applications etc.

The bottom line idea is that Facebook profiles is for humans (regular people) while Facebook pages are for public figures (artists, bands), companies, businesses, brands, communities etc.

3 Start registering a Facebook page
On the Facebook site click the "Create a Page" button in the bottom right side of the screen.

4 Create a page
After starting the registration process, you will have to choose what will your Facebook page represent: a local business, a company, an artist or a band, a brand, a community etc.
If you want to create a Facebook page for your small-to-medium business we suggest you go with the first option: "Local Business or Place".

5 Business information
Next, you will see that the nice image changes into a form where you will be asked to provide some basic information about your business: industry sector, address, zip code, telephone number.

6 Setting up the login credentials
After providing all the required info and agreeing to the Facebook Pages Terms you will need to provide your e-mail address, a password and your date of birth.
Be sure to remember the e-mail address and the password you provide here. They will be your login credentials necessary for accessing your Facebook page.

7 Validate the email
At this stage you are one click away from starting to use your new Facebook page. After pressing the "Sign Up Now!" button on the page presented in the previous step, you will be asked to validate your the email address you provided. To do this, check your email account for a mail from Facebook. Open the mail and click on the link that you find there. You will be redirected to your Facebook page.

8 Start using your Facebook page
Congratulations! You have just set up the first Facebook page for your business. You can now add an image, post an update or even promote this page on your website.

9 Your Facebook page URL
As you can probably see the URL of your Facebook page is pretty long and doesn't contain your company's name. Don't worry. The URL will automatically change to "www.facebook.com/your_company_name" once you get over 30 likes on your page. So, now you have another good incentive to start advertising your Facebook page.

How to Take a Screenshot on Tinychat?

Tinychat is a web app for chatting. Without having to install or download anything, users only have to register in order to enter any chatting room they want. Besides the basic text chatting, Tinychat supports both audio and video communication between people in the same room.

This guide will show you how to take a screenshot while in a Tinychat chat room.

1 Join a Tinychat room
Go to Tinychat and log in. Then either create your own broadcast room or join one.

2 Screenshot the page
You can create a screenshot by pressing the "Print Screen" button situated among the top right buttons of your keyboard. If you don't have any button labeled "Print Screen", look for any button that has "Prt Sc" written on it.

If you use a laptop you may see that the "Prt Sc" text is written inside a rectangle. In this case, to do a print screen you need to press the "fn" labeled button (situated in the bottom right side of the keyboard, right of the "Ctrl") and while holding it down, press the "Prt Sc". To make it clear: if the "Prt Sc" button is in a rectangle, then you need to push two buttons to make a screenshot, if not, then you need to push only one.

3 Save the screenshot
After following the instructions in the previous step, you may think that nothing happened. In fact, the image on your screen was saved in a virtual space on your computer. If you restart or close your computer, that image will be lost, as the virtual space empties when you power off or restart your operating system.

In order to save this image open up either "Paint" (for Windows users) or any other drawing tool and press Ctrl + V. You could also right click on the canvas and select "Paste".

This will make copy the screenshot to your canvas where you can crop it, enlarge it, edit it etc.

Publish a RSS feed with Hootsuite

HootSuite is a social networking client where people can set aggregate all their social networking activities. The site offers integration with: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Ping.fm, WordPress, MySpace, Foursquare and mixi. Users can also set up RSS feeds which they can forward to one of their social networking profiles. This how-to article helps users set an RSS feed in HootSuite.

1 Access the RSS customization panel
Log in to HootSuite. Go to "Settings" on the toolbar situated on the left side of the screen and press the "RSS/Atom" option. Or you can click "Settings" directly and the customization panel will pop up. Select the "RSS/Atom" tab on the left column.

2 Add a new RSS feed
Press the "Add New Feed" button.

3 Customize the RSS feed
Complete the form with the required info. We would like to advise you to set the sending of up to 5 posts at a time. Otherwise, HootSuite will send only the set number and consider the rest as old posts. You can chose between using ow.ly or ht.ly as an URL shortener. Use ht.ly if you would like to include the social bar with your link. This is a tool for easy re-Tweeting, seeing instant links ratings and submitting links to Digg, Reddit, Delicious, Facebook, etc. But we recommend ow.ly which includes a simple redirected URL without a frame. Also select one or more social network profiles where to send the feed items and hit the "Save Feed" button.

4 Wait for feeds
The RSS feed is set, all you have to do now is wait for HootSuite to forward them to your social network profile. Enjoy.

Top 7 Free Alternatives to Powerpoint

Top 7 Free Alternatives to Powerpoint

PowerPoint the great tool for creating presentations is getting old, or at least that is what we think. It still has many features, good animations, but it lacks the mobility an online app offers. By mobility I mean the ease of accessing and editing your presentation from anywhere.

This article presents 7 apps that are a free alternative to using PowerPoint.

1 SlideRocket
With nice transitions and effects, SlideRocket is perfect as an online replacement for PowerPoint. We have many praise words for this app, but the best solution is for you to go and have a look yourself.

2 Prezi
Prezi changes the way you do presentations: instead of creating slides, you just spread all you want to show on one big canvas where you zoom in and out of the regions of interest. It doesn't have many other animations besides the zoom, which is so cool and original, it makes you forget about the possibility of using other animations.

3 ZOHO Show
Part of the ZOHO product family, ZOHO Show is a great online replacement for PowerPoint. Its only shortcoming are a lack of animations and audio options. On the plus side it allows for embedding and easy sharing.

4 Vuvox
Vuvox allows users to create presentations using videos, photos, music, and text. The multimedia content for your presentation can be uploaded from your computer, or taken from Flickr, Picasa or other web source. The app even has three editing profiles: Express, Collage and Studio, which range from basic to complex.

5 SlideBomb
SlideBomb is the perfect tool for creating a mashup slideshow. Like Vuvox, users can add all kinds of media content into their slides which makes this app extremely versatile.

6 ThinkFree Show
ThinkFree Show has both an online and a desktop interface. Because the desktop interface needs to be installed, we concentrate on the online one which has two modes of editing: Quick Edit and Power Edit. Although extremely good as an alternative to PowerPoint, this app is pretty hard to use.

7 VCASMO
VCASMO is a pretty nifty app. It allows users to add subtitles in their presentations. You can also add videos and skip to a certain scene, not having to wait for it to load. Users can also set permission controls, embed their presentation in blogs, or even add blog articles.

Top 10 Free Apps to Setup a Corporate Website

Top 10 Free Apps to Setup a Corporate Website

So you have created your first company, or a brand new one. Now, it's time to create your corporate website. What you can do is either pay somebody to create it for you, or you can just take the extra few steps and do it yourself, even learning something in the process.

This article presents the top 10 free apps that you can use to set up a complete website.

1 Weebly
The first step is creating the basic website. For that you can use Weebly, a free web CMS where users can create and publish their websites for free. With the help of the Ajax-based WYSIWYG site editor and a pre-design template, you can create a website from scratch in just a few hours.

2 Facebook
The first step in the web 2.0 world is Facebook. Every company needs a Facebook page where you can post updates about what your company is doing, do announcements, or just keep in touch with your customers.

3 Twitter
The main advantage of Twitter over Facebook, as we see it, is that it is more dynamic. Tweets are distributed faster and you can get customer replies quicker than on Facebook. But keep in mind, we advise to create both a Twitter and a Facebook account for your company.

4 Hootsuite
Managing a Twitter and Facebook account can become a tedious job at best if you have a few hundred followers who post on your page or stream. Enter <a href=http://www.appappeal.com/app/hootsuite/">Hootsuite, a web app that helps you manage your social networking accounts as well as track their statistics. With this app you can see your streams, update them, reply to comments or tweets, and many more.

5 LinkedIn
Although you already have a Facebook page, you also need a LinkedIn one. LinkedIn is a social network site designed especially for professional and businesses. Look at it this way: Facebook looks like a hippy, while LinkedIn looks like a guy in suit. You need both because you want everybody else to think your company is also "cool".

6 Wordpress
The Facebook updates, tweets and other things you post on your social networking streams get lost in the stream. But if you want to have an archive where you can store the major announcements that your company has undergone you need a blog. For that we recommend Wordpress, a great, user friendly blogging application.

7 Google Reader
You can use Google Reader to start following other people's blogs. The reason why you would want to do this is because this way you get access to the latest info on trends, what other are doing or the latest news. It is a source of valuable information.

8 Gmail
Without a domain, when it comes to the contact e-mail you are forced to find another solution. Gmail to the rescue. It is easy to use, you can set labels and filters to manage your incoming messages, plus you get tons of other features that make your life easier by protecting you from the ever present SPAM.

9 Google Analytics
Now that your website is up and running and your company has a social networking identity, it is time to see the results of your work. Use Google Analytics when you want to see how users have ended up on your website, what they were interested in, what did they click etc. With this info you can continue to improve your website by identifying what users want and giving it to them.

10 Elance
Finally, if you want to improve your website, add a new functionality etc. but you don't know how to do it and you don't know anybody who can help you, then as a last result we recommend Elance. Elance is a platform where users can find professionals to complete their projects. You can post your project, see who bid on it, read their qualifications and choose the freelancer that you think is most likely to do the best job.

Google Spreadsheets Essential Tips

Google Spreadsheet is part of Google Docs, the online alternative to the Microsoft Office suite. Although Google Spreadsheet does not have the same years of development and experience as Excel, it still offers a great free alternative to the Microsoft program. As with Excel, you can use Google Spreadsheets to create and maintain tables, charts and many more.

This HowTo article is meant to show users how to get the most out of their Google Spreadsheet experience. It is intended for beginners and intermediate users who would like to learn more about this great web app.

1 Introduction to Google Spreadsheet
This is an introduction video to Google Spreadsheets. It will get users accustomed with the Google Spreadsheet interface by showing some of the more basic functionalities and how they can be activated. It will show you where the copy, cut, paste, font, text coloring, background coloring buttons are. You can choose to use these buttons or you can even use the keyboard shortcuts that appear in parenthesis when you hover with your mouse over some of them. For example:

Copy: CTRL + C

Cut: CTRL + X

Paste: CTRL + V

Undo: CTRL + Z

Redo: CTRL + Y

Bold/Unbold: CTRL + B

Print: CTRL + P

Save: CTRL + S

3 Creating formulas
If you want to make a data table, you can very well make it in Word or any other application that allows you to build tables. This is way the number one reason why people use Excel or Google Spreadsheet is because of their mathematical capabilities. A nice thing to know is that when writing a formula, if you put the $ sign in front of a cell name (ex: $C4) then you can move the content of that cell in another cell and the formula will still work. This video presents some of the numerous Google Spreadsheet formulas and how you can use them.

4 Changing spreadsheet colors
Did you know that in Google Spreadsheet you can change text and background colors with rules? This video will show you eaxctly how to do that.

5 Sharing your Google Spreadsheet
So you've heard that you can share your spreadsheet with others and work simultaneously on it. This video will show you how to invite people to start sharing your spreadsheet, how to set permissions and accessibility to your file.

6 Managing the revisions of a Google Spreadsheet
The reason why Google Spreadsheet is so popular, aside from the fact that it is free, is the possibility to have multiple people working on the same document at the same time. But since so many people with access can modify your spreadsheet, Google has made it simple for users to track the changes that a file undergoes. This is possible through the revisions mechanism. The following video shows you how to use the Revisions tab in Google Spreadsheets.

Replace Office with Google Docs

Why do it? Most obvious reason: because it's free. But if you bought your PC or laptop with the Microsoft Office Suite already included in the package, why use Google Docs now? Because Google Docs allow you to store all your files in the cloud. That means you have access to all your docs from any electronic device with Internet access. Let's not forget that you can also share your files with other people and make changes to them simultaneously.

1 Microsoft < - > Google
Here is a list of some programs of Microsoft Office and their online "rival" from Google:

MS Word - Google Docs Document

MS Excel - Google Docs Spreadsheet

MS Powerpoint - Google Docs Presentation

2 The hybrid approach
So you're not ready to give up on Microsoft Office but you want the extra functionalities that Google Docs provide. No sweat, just download the Google plug-in for Microsoft Office. After downloading the plug-in, the installation will begin automatically. Just follow its simple steps. When opening a Microsoft Office program next time you will be asked to connect to Google Cloud Connect and will be asked to login. Just provide your Gmail account credentials(if you have one, if not create one) and you are done.

3 Uploading Microsoft Office files to Google Docs
Say you want to upload some of your Microsoft Office files to Google Docs. Go to the "Upload" drop down menu and select "Files..."(if you want to upload one or more files), "Folder..."(if you want to upload the contents of a folder) or "Basic..."(where you can select or even drag and drop a file for upload).

4 Download files from Google Docs
A user can even download files from Google Docs into a Microsoft Office friendly format. Just open the Google Doc file you want to download, go to the "File" tab in the horizontal top menu, and there select "Download as". In the image shown below you can see that for a Document file from Google Docs you have the options of downloading the file in the format of either a Word, Text, Pdf or even a HTML file.

5 Extending the functionality with marketplace apps
You can extend the basic functionalities of Google Docs by using products from Google Apps Marketplace. Here you can download apps that have extensive integration functions with Google apps increasing your productivity and answering almost all your user needs regarding: administration, project management, workflow, sales & marketing, security & compliance etc.

10 Great Apps That Where Acquired in 2011

We're almost half way through this year and as expected we have seen some major changes in the app market. Facebook got evaluated at the staggering amount of $65 billion, and LinkedIn at "only" $4 billion. But these were not the only highlights of this semester. This is a list of the top ten largest, most important, and sometimes surprising, acquisitions of 2011 so far.

1 Tippr acquires DealPop
What makes this acquisition so interesting is that DealPop is a toddler in the online app world, launched less than a year ago. The main reason behind the buyout was that Tippr wanted to get its hands on DealPop’s experienced sales force which has a national reach, and its technical team, experts in the group buying infrastructure technology.
According to the deal, DeapPop customers can continue to use the site, but the deals will also be promoted on the PoweredByTippr network.

2 BuyWithMe buys GroopSwoop
One of Groupon and LivingSocial’s rival, BuyWithMe has bought Groop Swoop in order to achieve its objective of doubling its regional footprint by the end of this year. The details of the deal were undisclosed.

3 Shutterfly paid a lot for Tiny Prints
For a total of $333 million, Shutterfly has bought Tiny Prints, an online cards and invitations company. Shutterfly payed $141 million in cash and 3.9 million shares of common stock for it. Add to that 1.4 million shares of common stock that were given to the Tiny Prints employees and you get one sweet deal. The Tiny Prints team is currently working together with the Shutterfly one.

4 Krillion is incorporated by Local.com
Krillion creates a structured list of over 70.000 products by aggregating and matching consumer product information from websites and data feeds. The company was <a href=http://techcrunch.com/2011/05/02/local-com-buys-local-search-company-krillion-for-3-5m-debuts-daily-deal-service/">acquired by Local.com in order to help users find and buy the products that resonate with their interests. The deal cost Local.com $3.5 million.

5 eBay creates a foothold in the nonprofit area with MissionFish
Following its long acquisition streak eBay, has bought in May the nonprofit website MissionFish. The story behind the buyout is a long collaboration between the later and eBay’s Giving Works, a charitable program where people can donate items and money for charity. eBay has acquired MissionFish in order to use its technology for a new separate nonprofit company.

6 KickApps, Kewego and Kyte went home with KIT
KIT is a cloud-based video distribution tool that has acquired KickApps, Kewego and Kyte for a total of $77.2 million. The action was designed to expand KIT market both vertically and horizontally.

7 CBS get its paws on Clicker.com
This acquisition was probably the most surprising of the bunch. We didn't expect an almost centenary company that is so strongly grounded in the television domain to take this step. Clicker.com is an online guide to Internet Television, and this makes us even more curious about how CBS aims to use this new "tentacle".

8 LivingSocial saves SocialMedia
After it managed to be among the first companies to create a Facebook ad network, SocialMedia went through some rough times. Before the take over, some say that SocialMedia's top asset was its name. So, it finally was acquired by LivingSocial for $3 million.

9 OkCupid matches up with Match.com
Although Match.com had the biggest user base, the fact that OkCupid users are younger, made this company a good target for an acquisition. It only took $50 million for the two to seal the deal. We hope this turns out to be "a match made in heaven".

10 TripIt acquired by Concur
Concur, a travel and expense management company, has acquired TripIt, a mobile travel app, for $120 million in January this year. The reason behind the acquisition is that Concur focuses on medium to large companies and businesses, and TripIt will extend its range over independent business travelers.

Top 7 Online Alternatives to Photoshop

Top 7 Online Alternatives to Photoshop

Not everybody can afford to pay for a Photoshop license, and even less people know how to use all its functionalities.

This article presents seven online alternatives to Photoshop. Besides the main benefit of being able to use these apps anywhere, for some of them you won't even get that feeling of hopelessness that creeps up when you see that toolbar with hundreds of small buttons.

1 Photoshop Express
The most obvious alternative to Photoshop is the online version of it created by Adobe: Photoshop Express. We are no Photoshop experts, but we think that this is to some extent its exact replica, online.

2 Picnik
Picnik is the most popular image editing online app. It's not easy to use, and kind of slow, but incredibly powerful. It has too many features to specify here, and allows the saving of edited images on your computer in many formats: from PNG to GIF and PDF.

3 Sumo Paint
Sumo Paint is an online image editing app. It has a lot of features features like: brighten and darken images, add/subtract regions, good Zoom tool and many more. What sets it apart from other similar apps is its user friendliness and performance.

4 Slashup
When you first see Slashup for a second you might think you are in Photoshop. It has a very similar look and feel, with a modular view including tool picker, info, color and layer window to enhance your experience.

5 Aviary
Aviary is not just one, but a set of online apps meant to answer all your creative designer needs. The apps are Flash-based. The bundle has the same functionality as its Adobe counterparts. And although cheaper than Adobe, Aviary still has to catch up in the "processing speed" department.

6 Pixlr
Also a Flash-based image editing tool, Pixlr surprises through its speed, unlike Aviary. It is ideal for small scale image editing, but can become very annoying to use when wanting to edit large ones. It provides users with filters, adjustment options, brushes and all the mambo-jambo that a regular image editor has to offer.

7 FotoFlexer
FotoFlexer allows for easy and fast photo editing without having to register on their website. The app has moved away from the Photoshop look. Now it has all the editing tools in a toolbar displayed at the top of the screen.

Find and Register a Great Domain Name

When making and launching a website one of the most challenging things you have to do is to come up with a name. This article will give you some pointers on how to come up with a great domain name and what you need to do to register it.

1 Gather your friends or business partners
Finding a domain name is a creative job. The more people pitch in, the more fruitful the brainstorming session will be.

2 Factors to consider when coming up with a domain name
Here are some factors you should consider when naming a domain:

The name has to be short. Keep in mind that shorter is better.

Try to embed in the naming a part of your website's functionality. You can do that by thinking what your websites aims to do and then trying to combine them. If you lack the inspiration you can always have a look at the related words with RhymeZone. Then make a list of all those words and word fragments that sound good and try to piece them together.

If you can't really come up with a good name or the domain is already taken, try to create a new word. In time, your website is going to give a meaning to it, see Twitter and tweeting.

3 See if the domain is available
Most people believe this is the easy part while in fact this is the hardest. You can always open up a browser and try to see if the domain exists but that can lead to a world of trouble because of a little thing called Domain Name Front Running (DNFR). DNFR is the process in which one person monitors the activity of another person trying to register a domain name and then registering the same name before that person.

4 Using WHOIS
To protect yourself from prying eyes you should use WHOIS when verifying if a domain name is available or not. WHOIS is an internet protocol that queries databases for domain registration information. To do a WHOIS search for the domain name you can use any of these online apps. If the WHOIS tool does not find any info on the domain name you have searched then you can proceed to trying to register it. If not, it's back to the "drawing board" for you.

5 Registering your domain name
Nowadays registering a domain name is extremely easy since everything is done online. To register you domain name just go to one of the following websites: Register or Go Daddy and start owning your great domain name.

6 Buying a domain name
Buying an unregistered domain name can cost you up to $12/year for a .com. But if you want to buy an already registered domain you can expect to pay even several thousand $($25k - $100k). If the price is too high you can always try and rent the domain for a monthly fee.
