iPhone demand sees Apple topple Nvidia as most valuable company, again

Tech stocks have been a bloodbath this last week, but Apple's iPhone has supported the company enough with it once more taking the top spot as the most valuable firm in the world.

That top spot has been going back and forth between Apple and Nvidia for some time now, as iPhone and Services demand go up against AI chip consumption. This time, Apple's stock has been rising on the back of multiple hardware releases, plus the seamless transition of CEO from Tim Cook to John Ternus.

Apple stock closed on October 30 down to $344.63, leaving the company with a $5.03 trillion valuation. Nvidia had a tough day too, and finished below AAPL at $204.64 per share, and a $4.93 trillion valuation.

This latest valuation comes despite one analyst believing that Apple has confused iPhone buyers. Loop Capital claims that moving the base iPhone launch from September to some point early in 2027 has left buyers unsure.

After being a Google Maps stalwart, I'm now an Apple Maps convert. This is all thanks to a feature that has been a huge help whether I'm traveling longer distances or just heading out for groceries.

Apple Maps can do more than just show you your route

The feature in question is the ability to quickly and easily share my current ETA with other people. It's a feature I've found many people aren't aware of, yet it's one that I've found to be indispensable.

In short, the "Share ETA" feature allows me to keep other people informed of when I will arrive at my destination. They'll also receive a Maps notification that allows them to track my progress as I drive.

A Siri Remote connects to a Mac over Bluetooth, and macOS already supports some of its buttons. However, Apple designed the remote for Apple TV, so its clickpad doesn't automatically control the mouse or navigate Mac apps.

Basic controls work without additional software, while third-party apps add more functionality. Whether it's worth setting up depends on how much control you need and whether you're willing to switch the remote between your Mac and Apple TV.

At launch, there were more iPhone Duo in stores than online

Apple chose to have perhaps four times more iPhone Duo stock at retail than for sale online on launch day, and even so, most went home empty-handed.

Apple arranged its limited iPhone Duo stock so that most went to Apple Stores instead of to online pre-orders.

Apple described demand for the iPhone Duo as being "extraordinary," and manufacturer Foxconn has talked about using its international facilities to produce more. Certainly the pre-order stock sold out instantaneously, although a new report suggests there was a reason for that.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple elected to route the greater number of iPhone Duo units to Apple Stores instead of keeping them for online pre-orders. Citing people said to be close to Apple's logistics planning, he says on his "Power On" podcast that as much as 80% of the stock was reserved for the stores.

AI data handling firm Ascend.io acquired by Apple

Apple has acquired another AI firm, though this time Ascend.io is aimed at company data management rather than any consumer-facing product.

Apple has been continuously buying up AI firms, with the most recent ones being for specific features such as Huxe's automated podcast creation. This time, though, it has bought Ascend.io from Silicon Valley firm Ascension Labs in order to improve its own internal data management.

According to the EU's public listing of significant acquisitions, Apple closed the deal on June 30, 2026. Apple appears to have adopted new processes, though, as this purchase is again not specified as an acquisition.

Enormous iPhone Duo demand can be easily met, hints confident Foxconn

Giving hope to people with long pre-order delays, manufacturer Foxconn appears to say that it can readily fulfill even the iPhone Duo's surge in demand.

Future iPhone Duo models may add under-display Face ID to the front screen.

It sold out the instant pre-orders opened, and then only a lucky few were able to buy the iPhone Duo in-store. But even as shipping times remain long, Bloomberg reports that Foxconn has been saying it can meet any firm's demand.

"We have over 240 sites in 24 countries all over the world," said Michael Chiang, CEO of Foxconn's parent company, Hon Hai, "which enable us to have a timely supply to our customers' demand whenever they need."

DoorDash to buy Instacart for $17 billion, slashing user options

DoorDash has announced a deal to buy delivery market competitor Instacart, in a move that will leave users with one fewer iPhone app-based delivery option.

DoorDash has confirmed plans to buy Instacart.

DoorDash announced the move via a press release, noting that the $65-a-share buyout price represents a 26% premium on Instacart's closing price from October 22, 2026. The aggregate transaction consideration will be made up of at least 75% cash, with shareholders able to choose cash or DoorDash shares as payment.

While the deal is yet to be completed, it's in both company's interests for the purchase to go ahead. Termination fees would see Instacart pay $650 million and DoorDash $1.25 billion should the deal falter.

Up to 350,000 Macs exposed by a forgotten Popcorn Time updater

An abandoned Popcorn Time updater left up to 350,000 Macs vulnerable to remote takeover, giving potential attackers a way to execute malicious code with full system privileges.

Security researchers at Eye Research detailed the discovery in an October 22, 2026, research report about Operation IXIM. The vulnerability affected Time4Popcorn, an abandoned fork of the popular BitTorrent streaming application that continued circulating under the Popcorn Time name after the original project shut down in 2014.

Some users had stopped using Popcorn Time, but its updater kept running. Eye Research discovered attackers could hijack it to install malware and intervened between November 2025 and March 2026.

Russia orders Apple to surrender users' messages on demand

Apple and Microsoft have been added to a Russian state surveillance registry, requiring them to hand over users' text, video and audio messages without a legal process, and by request.

Multiple firms and apps are already on this same list, including WhatsApp and Telegram, so it's not clear why it has taken until now for Apple to be added. It's a continuation of the country's moves to control users' messages, though, as it follows Russia's blocking of FaceTime in 2025.

According to Bloomberg, Apple and Microsoft were added to this registry of "organizers of information dissemination" on October 2, 2026. The registry is operated by the country's state media watchdog, Roskomnadzor, which previously forced Apple to remove VPN apps from the App Store.

Apple and OpenAI won't face off over trade secrets until July 2027

The judge has set up the schedule for the blockbuster Apple vs. OpenAI trade theft trial, and we'll all have to wait a while for it to really get going.

Apple will get some of the OpenAI documents it requested in court.

Judge Edward Davila has set the Apple vs. OpenAI trial for July 19, 2027, at 9 a.m. Both companies were given until October 23 to agree on a schedule.

The dispute has roots stretching back to 2019, if not earlier. By the time the trial begins, Apple's lawsuit will have been underway for a year.

A Washington woman is suing Apple after alleging AirTag safeguards failed to prevent tracking during domestic abuse. The lawsuit alleges her husband concealed three AirTags among her belongings.

According to the complaint, seen by King5, one tracker was found in her son's diaper bag, while a second was found hidden inside the rear-seat upholstery of the her car. A third tracker was found within the console of her husband's car, which she'd borrowed for a trip to Oregon.

Apple didn't just put a touchscreen on the MacBook Pro, it made some minor macOS changes to buttons and menus to accommodate your fingers. Here's where they are so far, and what apps will get them first.

The company introduced the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display at its "Pro and tell" event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28. The new models start at $2,899 and $3,399, respectively, with preorders open now and availability beginning November 6.

The laptops run macOS 27 and retain the traditional keyboard and trackpad. Apple has added touchscreen support without replacing the desktop interface that Mac users already know.

One of the clearest changes involves the red, yellow and green buttons at the top-left corner of Mac windows. In its hands-on report, The Verge found that the buttons grow larger when touched, making them easier to select with a finger. A short video posted by Neil Cybart shows the same behavior, although the buttons appear to respond with a slight delay.

For a long time, the thing about the lit Apple logo on the lid of its portables was that it was the wrong way around. It was positioned for the user to see as they opened the lid, while it was then upside down for anyone passing by.

Never one to miss out on good advertising, Apple flipped that logo around. To this day its glowing symbol shines out from concert stages around the world.

Apple launched the M5 Ultra and M5 Max editions of the Mac Studio in August 2026, but revealed in barely a footnote that there was one configuration coming later. Even as Apple was saying that the Mac Studio could be configured to have 512GB RAM, it actually couldn't. Until now.

As of now, pre-orders are open for what could be the best Mac ever made. It's the M5 Ultra Mac Studio, and it can now come with 96GB RAM and all the way up to 512GB.

Preorders are open for Apple's latest iPad mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro models, with all of the new devices arriving in stores Friday, November 6.

Customers in the United States can place orders through Apple's website or the Apple Store app. The new hardware includes an OLED iPad mini, an M6-powered iMac, and two MacBook Pro updates with different processors and displays.

Apple's eighth-generation iPad mini replaces its LCD screen with an 8.5-inch OLED display, bringing deeper blacks and higher contrast to the company's smallest tablet. As reported Monday, Apple has also narrowed the bezels, reduced the enclosure to 5.4 mm thick, and added IP67 water and dust resistance.

Over the years, Apple has been rumored to be working on a major update to the MacBook Pro, adding OLED. That speculation has finally become a reality with Apple's latest launch of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Officially called the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, it basically, your standard MacBook Pro but with a better screen. It comes with either the M5 Pro or M5 Max processor, with the former starting at 24GB RAM and the latter 36GB RAM.

The compact enclosure lets Mac mini, Mac Studio, and MacBook Pro users add professional hardware their computers don't have internal slots for. It connects up to three PCIe cards through a single Thunderbolt cable for specialized audio, video, networking, and storage.

Sonnet introduced the larger Echo III T5 Desktop on October 14. The $1,199.99 enclosure supports PCIe cards up to 12.28 inches long and includes a 400W power supply, while the new Echo SE III T5 accommodates shorter cards up to 7.75 inches.

Both systems have the same advertised aggregate PCIe bandwidth, so the main differences are physical size, supported cards, and power provision. Sonnet also introduced a single-slot enclosure earlier in October for users who don't need room for multiple cards.

Manufacturers and consumers are already dealing with the effects of high memory demand caused primarily through AI data center and infrastructure buildouts. Now, it seems that the problem will be affecting more components, and for years longer than anyone really expected.

In its Q3 financial results released on Wednesday, memory maker SK Hynix claims it achieved revenues of 104 trillion won ($77 billion) and a net profit of 39.7 trillion won ($29 billion), thanks to record sales.
