AT&T iPhone tethering users beware: MacRumors is reporting Beta 2 of iPhone OS 3.1 that was released last night removes any installed “hacks” that enabled the Internet Tethering option in the Network settings on the iPhone and the ability to tether altogether. When iPhone OS 3.0 was released, the option for Internet Tethering was nowhere to be found on AT&T iPhone’s here in the US but within a week, a number of sites reported how to enable the feature, some of which involved two simple clicks on a site within Safari on the iPhone itself.

Tethering, the ability to share your iPhone’s data connection with your computer for internet access, has not been an option for AT&T iPhone users since the original iPhone launch back in 2007. During WWDC ‘09 when the iPhone 3GS was introduced, tethering was announced as an option for some global cell carriers, but not AT&T was not one of them. Since then, AT&T has stated that it plans to offer it sometime this summer for an additional monthly charge.

Welcome to tonight’s edition of Popular iPhone App Updates. Once again it’s slim pickings in terms of app updates but there are two new ones tonight that are big. First off, Recorder, one of the very first recording apps released in the App Store has been updated to version 10. The description of the update says “We’ve added the ability to record phone calls via and external source.” This has the potential to be ground breaking as there are currently no apps with that ability in the App Store. I’d love to be able to report success with this feature but the only thing that happens when you tap the “Call Recording” tab in the app is that it says “Connecting… One moment, we’re checking the status of our call-recording service.” This could mean that their servers are being slammed or that it’s not quite ready for prime-time. Either way, we should know more in the upcoming days. Their website doesn’t seem to be updated to reflect their recent releases but hopefully there will be something up there soon. Our second update tonight is for Ambiance which is described as “major”. And major it is. iPod integration as well as Push notification are at the top of the change list. If you own either of these apps, check your updates and get to installing them and let us know what your experience is with Recorder and it’s promise of phone call recording in the comments!

Just moments ago Apple made iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 2 available for download to developers in the iPhone Dev Center. This release includes downloads for the iPhone and iPod touch as well as an updated SDK. There’s no immediate word on what enhancements or changes this update includes but it’s good news to see that Apple has chosen to made their beta firmware available widely available to developers as opposed to how they did it during the life cycle of OS 2.0 where it was available to only a select few.

If you’re a developer, head on over to the iPhone Dev Center and get your hands on a copy of the Beta 2. After installing it, let us know in the comments if you notice anything different, good or bad.

JoinMe allows you to see how close or how far away a person is from your current location and how long it will take them to reach you.  It was recently updated with the ability to receive push noticiations when someone wants to track you.

joinme_screenJoinMe is is a simple and easy to use tracking application.  Simply launch JoinMe and set up an account.  It takes a few seconds and it’s free of charge.  Once you are all set up, select the person you would like to track from your contacts list.  If they don’t already have the app, an email will be sent instructing them to go download it, which isn’t a big deal since everything is completely free.  The person you would like to track will receive a push notification if enabled, or they will receive an email asking them to approve the tracking.  If they approve, the app will calculate their location, speed, and the approximate time it will take for them to reach you.

JoinMe stops tracking once both people disconnect, so there shouldn’t be any unwanted tracking.

JoinMe is available in the App Store for free.  We have also added it to our Apps That Push You AppList.

Today is a great day for those of you who enjoy playing with boats.  Tradewinds 2 by Handmark and WarShip by Goorusoft have both been placed on sale for a limited time.

warshipTradewinds 2 is based on the highly acclaimed PC game by the same name.  The idea of the game is to obtain mass amounts of wealth and power by trading items and defeating pirates.  The game features two unique gameplay modes, four different characters, 20 unique Caribbean ports, and much more. Thanks to iPhone OS 3.0’s ability to access the iPod framework, the uber-popular jailbroken iPhone music app TuneWiki has finally made its way into the App Store, and the best part is, it’s free!

tunewiki_screenTuneWiki is a full-featured music-related app that’s main selling point is its ability to display nearly any song’s lyrics.  It doesn’t just display the lyrics, however, it also intelligently follows along as the song plays.  Lyrics can be translated to over 4o different languages as well.

The fun doesn’t stop there. TuneWiki also has loads of other features, including the ability to listen to radio stations via Shoutcast, display radio lyrics, purchase the songs you are listening to, search for music videos, real-time top 50 charts, skins, and more.  It even has a few social networking features, like interactive music maps and the ability to share the music you’re listening to on Facebook and Twitter.

TuneWiki is now available in the App Store for free, and it’s free because it is ad-supported.  This one is definitely worth a try for any looking for a great lyrics app.

If you haven’t had a chance to try Capcom’s Resident Evil: Degeneration or Gameloft’s Real Tennis 2009 on your iPhone or iPod touch, there is no better time than the present because both developers have released free versions of their games.

realtennis09_screenResident Evil: Degeneration is a game originally created for Nokia’s N-Gage based on the CG-animated film of the same name, which is actually based on the series of games, if that makes any sense at all.  The game takes place seven years after the tragedy in Raccoon City in an airport that is overrun by zombies.  You must rescue the remaining survivors, unlock puzzles, and battle the undead.  Resident Evil: Degeneration Free is available immediately in the App Store, and it allows you to play the entire first chapter.  The full version is available for $6.99.

Gameloft’s Real Tennis 2009 is one of the best tennis games available for the iPhone and iPod touch.  The game features eight detailed players, seven stadiums with three different surfaces to play on, local Wi-Fi multiplayer, and more.  If you are a sports fan, this one is definitely worth a try. Real Tennis 2009 Lite is now available in the App Store for free.  The full version is available for $4.99.

Apple today announced that over 1.5 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store during its first year of operation.  That would mean about 4 million apps are downloaded every single day!

“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”

Apple also mentioned that the App Store now has more than 65,000 apps and more than 100,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program.

With over 40 million devices capable of running apps from the App Store, the rate of apps being downloaded will only increase.  The App Store has become one giant beast with no signs of slowing down.

Thanks to our hard-working staff behind the scenes, we now have an iPhone-optimized AppAwards page for you to vote for your favorite apps while on-the-go.  The world makes sense once again!

The AppAwards have been extremely successful so far, with only a few minor bugs to work out here and there, but apparently we somehow forgot to make sure that you could vote from your iPhone or iPod touch.  We heard your cries and fixed the problem as soon as physically possible.

The iPhone-optimized page is very easy to use.  Instead of snazzy icons like the regular AppAwards page, the iPhone version features easy-to-use drop down tabs.  The page is rather long since we have so many categories, so be sure to hit the submit button at the very bottom of the page to ensure your voice is heard.
