Right Size

Not to long ago, Papa and I were strolling the aisles at Lowes, when we came across a set of tool for kids. These tools were not just you ordinary plastic pretend tools..this tool set was the real deal. Real steel hammer head, real Phillip screwdriver, flat head and even a hand saw. The were scaled down for kids hands with rubber finger grips on the handles too. A really nice set indeed! Better than the tool set, was the beginner project kits. Bird house kits, bat house kits, tool box kit. So what did Papa Joe and Henry decide to make? A catapult, yuppers, my boys decided to build not one but two catapults. And, what is mama left to do when all of the excitement is going on...pick up the giant tape balls for her boys.

Henry totally enjoys his tools so much, that on beautiful days like this one today, we got outside and set up "tool shop". I bring out some cardboard boxes, nails, screws, hammer and screwdriver. Henry hammers away his nails into the cardboard. Screwing into the cardboard is terrific practice for more building projects to come, but it also helps to reinforce fine motor skills, patience and hand and eye coordination.

Pen Pals

Most days, around 1pm, Henry looks up from whatever he is doing, to announce that he "hears the post mail coming. Most days, he hurries to open the front door in the hopes to see a pile of mail waiting for him. In that pile on most days, he hopes there is a package or envelope for him.
It is in the spirit of receiving mail that had me reaching out to mama friends in the hope of starting a pen pal program.
Why?
With Henry not in preschool, I need fun ways to teach him. Letter writing to a friend not only gives him the reason to practice his writing, it also gives my boy a reason to color. Henry is not so big on coloring or when he does colors, he only wants to use one crayon.
With pen pal letters, he draws pictures using lots of colors, practices with scissors, pastes pictures, learns about capitals and lower case, form words and learns about punctuation. All these good things from one letter writing activity. Lastly, with the USPS having hard times, I like the idea of keeping our local post office busy. Henry gets a chance to make a real transaction, with money exchange. The look of pride when he puts his letter into the mailbox is worth it alone.
I think you and your friends should start a Pen Pal program too! I mean who doesn't like to get mail?

Some suggestions to get you started-
Pick a theme a month
Younger kids can get in on it too by simply painting or coloring a picture.
Older kids can write small stories or maybe take some photographs.
Why not write a quick note to other mama's too.
Make homemade greeting cards.
Fast kid meal suggestions or a have your child write a mama and me recipe.

Sounds

I sit here, at the kitchen table, busy, trying to get the last of my orders ready for shipping before the weekend comes. When, all of a sudden, I am stopped, by the sweet sounds all around me. So sweet are these sounds that I am compelled to really listen to all of them...the sweetest song bird out side my window, his song is so lovely, it is as though I am listening to it for the first time. The sound of Henry and his friend in the next room, quietly chit chatting away immersed in their pretend play....so sweet are their words to each other. The neighbors footsteps up the stairs, the trash truck driving up the hill. I hear the hum of the computer and the clicking of the keys as I type. I hear the wind blow outside my window.
As I sit here, I hear my breath as I sigh..oh that sweet birdsong..sounds like Spring?

Working Hard

With January being a slow month in the shop, it gives me some time to come up with some new ideas.
Papa Joe bought me a new scroll saw, there are scraps of paper all over the house with all the plans I have been dreaming up for that new toy!
So far I have made this

Wood Stacking puzzles. These are great for babies first puzzle, then your toddler can use them later on for magical pretend play. I am working on some other designs too. Henry is a great help, sharing all his ideas. I may just make a "tunnel" puzzle he suggested to me one day. "This way trains and cars can go under" indeed!

I am also working on some play scarves, new FLY ME designs and my newest toy, the Classic Toy Tin

Yo-yo, cup and ball and a flip flop spinning top. Comes to you in a metal tin, perfect for gift giving, party favors or tuck away into a Easter basket. Waiting Away

Sometimes, life takes you by the hook, casts you out and waits...for a bite. This seems to be my thoughts during the cold month of January...waiting...waiting for snow to come, waiting for the days to warm up, waiting for the ice to melt, waiting for the birds to come back, waiting to plant. I want it all. Winter seems to be frozen in time, not moving forward. This time last year, we had three snow storms, waist deep snow in which to tunnel, slide and build in. But, this year is different, no snow yet, just gray and brown outside. Every morning my little man Henry runs to the window with excitement only to be disappointed when he peeks and still sees no snow.
Seed catalogs are coming in the mail, my mind wanders off ahead to spring, when we can start our seedling. Sometimes we watch the cardinal, he comes to perch on my trellis, eating his seed. I miss the hummingbirds.
I know it is not good to think ahead or think of the past, we should be living in the moment. I find that hard sometimes. When day turns into night and night vanishes for the sun, it all seems to be the same in January.
I am waiting away.

Loving

The hustle and bustle of Christmas is over and I have cleaned up most of the mess. We still have about 50 books that I need to find homes for and I find myself missing the holiday music already. It is so weird to have it all end so abruptly. With all the new toys, books and gadgets, Henry, Papa and I are happily distracted for a little while... slowing down is so nice!

Right now I am really loving:
*My smartwool socks and the fact that my hubby knows me so well
* knitting on really big needles
* listing to Josh Groban holiday album
* cuddling in bed, under the warm covers, reading all the new books to Henry
* enjoying my newly turned four year old like his Kumon workbooks
* super proud of my little man when he puts on his own socks
* that my wonderful mother in law got me some super warm slippers and a vintage looking shawl! Love Her!
* painting the *new* Spring line for the shop...soy paint is so magical
* left over hazelnut and bird seed bark..yummy in my tummy
* new play dates with dear friends, because finally they have some free time thanks to winter break

Penmanship Practice

A good friend of mine gave me this really cute idea for a quick and easy way to get your little one to practice their penmanship. You write a letter and have your child trace your writing. Ingeniously simple.
Well what better way to get them to practice their letters than to write a letter to Mr. Santa Claus!

Henry just really excite and quoted me word for word what he wanted to say in his letter to Santa.

After I wrote it down in pencil, I gave him a marker to trace. He concentrated really hard, took his time and even had to switch markers in middle of writing because he "was not proud of his letters". When Henry was finished, he felt so proud! After addressing the letter to the big man in red, Henry insisted he must lick the envelope. Where was he when I had to lick 40 Christmas cards? (ahem)

Post office bound with all those Apple n Amos order I have to mail out, Henry, with letter in hand, patiently waited for mama to finish up at the counter. With my camera at the ready, I was able to snap the very first pictures of Henry mailing a letter. I can't wait to add this to his baby book!

All in all a good activity, from the practicing of letters, to discussion of letter writing and what is a sentence all the way to how the mailman brings the mail to the North Pole. This is sure to be the start of a new holiday tradition!

In the Spirit

I was never big on Christmas, oh sure, as a kid I was, but once an adult, the magic seemed to have left me. Being a mama now has changed everything...as it usually does. I love having holiday music playing in the house all day and night. The lights must go up and the house decorated. I love our little tree too.
Last year, Henry and I decorated our tree with glittered pine cones in red, green, gold and cooper. It looks so great, I just can't get over it. The glow of the warm holiday lights around the house just makes me feel better. With it getting cold and dark outside, having these little bright twinkles all over the place are putting me in a better mood. But, nothing gets me in the holiday mood better than Henry. His sweet face, lighting up every time there is talk of Santa, or Christmas, or snow...boy....he just sparkles.

December 14th our baby turned 4. For his special day with us, we took him to see Santa on the Polar Express train ride in Essex CT. It was great! Lights everywhere, our car had its own elf, doing tricks, singing carols...the works.
Santa and Mrs. Claus made their appearance complete with hot cocoa and cookies! Henry loved absoutly everything about this adventure...he was beaming ear to ear and so was I!
Kids just put you in that special kinda mood!

Depressed

For those of you that do not know me, I broke my left ankle and my right foot just before Thanksgiving. It has me really depressed. My son, Henry, has watched so much t.v since the freak fall, that he is getting really hard to handle. Being stuck in the house with nothing to do has made us both different. There is more yelling going and it makes me fell like shit. The shop has me really busy too. I am really bummed that all of or normal traditions have to be tossed aside this year due to the fact that Papa Joe is running around non stop trying to take care of me, Henry, work, the shop, laundry, dishes, dinners and everything else his demanding wife is asking for. I feel so sorry for him. It is like we are all walking on a very short tight rope. Because of my yucky mood, I have not wanted to write anything on this space.
December in general is a very busy month for us with Henry's birthday and then Christmas, not to mention all the sewing I usually do for gifts. Not this year...makes me really sad.
I promise to come back soon and share. Warm winters wishes to you all.

Letterboxing again

With the unseasonably warm weather visiting New England these days. We found ourselves on a double letter boxing adventure in a very old historic cemetery a few towns over. The day was simply beautiful and the cemetery was just amazing. Although old, the cemetery did not have the least bit of creepiness. It was warm and inviting but then again I love cemeteries, in fact Papa Joe proposed to me in one. That is another story.

Today's letter box adventure had us going on a clue hunt, looking from grave stone to grave stone for clues all while learning some of the history.

This stamp was called the "wandering witch". If you notice, she is hand carved and the detail on her is amazing. This is by far the best stamp we have found to date. Love her!

Henry and I were having some trouble finding the second letterbox. When Papa Joe got home, we went back to the cemetery to look some more. I had a good feeling where the hidden letterbox was but digging around a old rock wall covered with leaves with Henry by my side was no my idea of safe.
Papa Joe, Henry and I looked for along time, all those nooks and crannies had us busy, but finally I found it or should I say Henry found it. All our hard work had paid off, for this time it was another hand carved stamp called the "spooky ghost".

It was such a fun day!

Occupy your imagination

Inspired by all the revolutions going on around America, it is time to make a stand, a small contribution if you will. This is something, that although small, if done by every household in America will speak volumes.
In the wise words of Gandhi "When the people lead the leaders follow".

"As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high
gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods --
merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This
year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine
concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift
giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes
there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in
a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates
from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some
health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned
detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a
book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down
the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift
receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or
driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift
certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about
a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this
isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town
Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or
motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a
local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is
struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin
their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery
and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave
your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at
your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese
lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about
fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to
burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that
China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about
US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow
their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our
communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.
THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.
Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion
groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in
your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations,
and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other,
and isn't that what Christmas is about?"

November

October went out with a bang or should I say a blizzard. 2011 was the "year of the storm" in my mind. There was record snow fall in the beginning of the year, heat waves, record flooding, a tornado, a hurricane and a freak snow storm that nearly destroyed Halloween.
This brings us to November.
November the month of lists, shopping, remembering, traditions and gratitude. My hope is that November 2011 calms down, that I can be surrounded by my family and friends, enjoying each other rather than worrying about when the power and heat will come back on.
November is the start of our many family traditions, from food to gift making. November is the month for settling down, taking a breather and lets not forget planning for the up coming holiday season.
On the agenda this month, sewing and lots of it, from pajamas to repairs on hunting attire, to gift wrap bags. We also are planning on traveling to a local Native American museum and immersing ourselves in everything Native American and early settlers. I can't wait.
Lastly, I feel as though the Earth defiantly has something to say with all the extreme weather. There is nothing like severe weather to wake you up, get you thinking about preparedness and tell you who your real friends our. The serge of giving help to your neighbors has never been greater. My hope is that this light continues to be a pay it forward thought that is not easily burned out.

Adventures in the Woods

Awhile back I mentioned Letterboxing to you in the hopes of getting you inspired and outdoors. It is such a fun time, being on the hunt for a special hidden treasure. Not to mention all the potential of education that can take place. From identifying trees, inspecting insects and rocks to learning a little history about your location.

It is so funny how, at times, I wish my boy were just a baby again, so I can nurse him to sleep or carry him in my arms all day. Then there are times, like when we are letter boxing, I wish he were older so he could really understand the "adventure" of it, the hunting for clues, the element of accomplishment when his treasure is found. Some day...

For now though, I need to remember to focus on the "now" moments, the eager questions about the little things, the silly laughs about nothing. My sweet boy is growing up so fast. I am the one who needs to slow down and take it all in, just like Henry does.
