Today We Remember and will never forget the 2,996 people that died due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2011. It was truly a day that bonded our nation closer together.
We remember the 246 people that died on the 4 hijacked airplanes. The 2,606 either on the ground of New York City or in the World Trade Center’s North or East tower. The 343 New York City Fire Department personal and the 37 active Police personal. We remember the grieving families, relatives, friend’s neighbors of the diseased.
We remember the day that America had began war and the thousands in the Military that have been injured or have died fighting for our country. We remember the country as one. A now bounded country; united as one. This not only affected New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, United States, Japan, Mexico, Africa it affected the whole world. Please bow your heads and say a prayer for the ones still suffering and please Never Forget the victims of the 911 Tragedy.

Appliance Repair Service – Why so Expensive

Appliance repair is something we would all like to avoid whenever possible. It seems like appliances typically break down shortly after their warranty expires. Of course this never happens at a convenient time…how could it? Appliances break down when you’re using them. It’s bad enough that things are not going as planned; now you have to find an appliance repair service and schedule an appointment. If you’re very lucky, you will be given a window of several hours and the appliance repair man will show up on time.

The Appliance Repair Nightmare Begins

When the appliance repairman arrives and fixes it in only 10 minutes, you breathe a sigh of relief…until you see the bill for $150.00! Why so much for so little?

Worse yet, you might need an expensive part replaced which will cost you more money. The part might be inexpensive, but you will pay a mark-up plus labor for installation…another $200.00!

Just to kick you while you’re down, the appliance repair man checks his truck to discover that he doesn’t have the necessary part in stock. Your appliance has been dismantled with parts scattered around, and now you will have to wait two weeks for them to special order this part that is not available locally.

Why is appliance repair service so much? Why is it that they never have the parts you need in stock? There has to be a better way!

The Appliance Repair Technician from ApplianceQuest Explains

All professional or skilled-trade services come with a fee. Whether you are consulting a doctor or lawyer or calling a handyman or appliance repair service, you will be paying for their knowledge. A couple humorous jokes that demonstrate this concept are:

Rules for a plumber…Hot on the left, water drains down, and charge as much as you want!

The appliance repair man shows up, hits it with a hammer, and charges $250.00. Why so much you ask? He answers, “$50 for hitting it with a hammer and $200 for knowing where to hit it!”

Ok, not so humorous if you’re the one who is dealing with a washer full of wet clothes and water when it quits spinning, or a dishwasher that is spraying water all over your kitchen.

Appliance repairs may appear to be simple, but the fact is, they often are not. Appliance repair technicians have to stay current with every brand and model of each appliance.

ApplianceQuest, is an authorized service provider for many companies including Viking, Whirlpool, Maytag, Jen-Air, Tapan and White Westinghouse just to name a few. Several times a year, he may be required to travel out of town to attend training seminars on new products and service information.
In addition, appliance repair technicians pay for liability insurance, vehicle maintenance, tools and equipment, office supplies and other business related expenses.

The reason parts seem to be more expensive today is because appliances have many more electronic parts and circuit boards than in the past. These parts are more expensive than mechanical parts from “back in the day.”

The appliance repair man cannot possibly stock every part and they cannot diagnose the problem and purchase the part based on the customer’s description. If they do take a chance and order the part, they may not be able to send it back if it is wrong. Or, they might have to pay a restocking fee.

So, now you understand a little about why things are so expensive and why it can take several days or even a couple weeks to have your appliance repaired. Is it worth all that, or should you replace the appliance?

Consumer Reports suggests replacing the appliance if the repair cost is more than half the price of a new one. But, how do you know how much the repair cost will be before the appliance repair man gets into the job? A good appliance repairman will be able to give you an estimate once he diagnoses the problem. If you decide not to go through with the repairs, you may have to pay his service fee because there is time and labor involved in troubleshooting appliance problems.

If you choose to purchase a new appliance, chances are good you will be pleased with the new features that come with appliances today. Energy Starr appliances have energy conserving features to save you money on utility bills. There are also time-saving and convenient features that older appliances do not have.

Here are some guidelines for working with an appliance repair service:

Gather necessary information before calling the appliance repair service, including your schedule, so you can make an appointment, your warranty information, brand name, model and serial number of the appliance.

Be home when the appliance repair man shows up. Though it can be frustrating to be given a two to four hour time window, this is often the best and only way to do this job. The appliance repair man cannot always be expected to know exactly how long each job is going to take.

Don’t put off appliance repair when you know something is going wrong. If the appliance is making a grinding noise, but still seems to work ok, chances are, the repair will be relatively inexpensive if you address it right away. Otherwise, you risk the problem leading to a more expensive problem.

The appliance repair man came to fix the broken washer you called about. Don’t ask him to start looking at your refrigerator that runs too long or your dishwasher that drains too slow.

Owners often like to watch the technician at work, but be considerate. Keep pets and children out of the way. The repairman doesn’t need your dog licking his face or your children playing with his tools.

Payment is expected at the time of service. Do not wait until the job is complete to tell the appliance repair man that you cannot pay him.

Appliance repair will never be a thrilling experience…not for you or the appliance repair man who seems to be getting paid handsomely. In most cases, his fees are reasonable when you look at things from his point of view. It takes time and costs money to travel around fixing appliances. Appliance repair men often travel ten to twenty miles between jobs. They have to keep up with advancing technologies and new products.

Think about the convenience you’re paying for. It could be worse. At least the appliance repair service comes to you. The appliance is fixed and working like a charm. The laundry will get done, the dishes will get clean, the trash will get compacted, your food will stay cold and life will go on…until the dryer breaks down!

Refrigerator – Runs But Is Not Cold Enough

If the refrigerator is not running
Check to see if there is power to the refrigerator. Make sure the plug is properly seated in the socket and the temperature control is turned to the “on” position.

If “0F 0F” appears on the display, the refrigerator is in DEMO MODE. To exit Demo Mode for controls on the outside of door, Press and Hold the Energy Saver and Adjust Freezer buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. To exit Demo Mode for controls inside the Fresh Food Compartment, Press and Hold the Ice Off and Freezer buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. You will hear a beep and “0F 0F” will no longer be displayed. Adjust Refrigerator and Freezer temperature to the desired settings. Allow 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize.

If the refrigerator is running and not cooling or not cold enough, Several factors may influence the temperature. Try the following:

If the refrigerator has just been serviced, it could still be in a diagnostic mode. Please disconnect power to your refrigerator for 30 seconds and this should clear the control panel. The refrigerator should now cool normally.

Check the temperature control settings.

For Dial or Digital Readout Models, adjust your temperature control by one number higher for a cooler temperature setting.
For Actual Temperature Readout Models, adjust your temperature control by one degree lower for a lower temperature setting.

If this is a new unit and the controls have been set properly for 24 hours but the unit is still warm, you may need to schedule service. Call ApplianceQuest today we can get a technician out to you asap.
Allow about 24 hours for the unit to cool down and stabilize after initial installation.

Make sure that both the refrigerator and freezer contain a reasonable food load. Closed containers of water, food or non-perishables will help to stabilize the temperature. This is because the items in the refrigerator absorb the cold, and actually work to help the refrigerator maintain a steady temperature, in much the same way that ice cubes keep a drink cold. When you open the refrigerator door, the cool air rushes out and warm air rushes in. The more items in the refrigerator, the less cool air is needed to keep the refrigerator cold. Therefore, when you close the door again, the refrigerator returns to a stable temperature more quickly.

Make sure refrigerator and freezer doors can close and can properly seal.

Make sure the back wall of the freezer does not have an ice build-up.

Check for large items, such as trays, platters, food items (like pizza boxes), and ice behind the ice bin that may interfere with door closure.

Top-Freezer Models: If the doors do not close on their own when partially opened, you may need to adjust the leveling legs or rollers so that the front is higher than the back. Keep adjusting the level until the door closes on its own when you open the door halfway (45 degree angle).

Make sure door gaskets are sealing properly.

Check to see if large containers are placed against the back wall of the refrigerator. The large containers in back may block the flow of cold air and adversely affect the temperatures in the refrigerator. Move the tall items so they don’t block the air flow.

Check to see if the condenser is dirty. (To minimize the possibility of electric shock, unplug the appliance before attempting any maintenance or cleaning.) When the condenser coils get dirty, the sealed system does not operate as efficiently.

NOTE: Not all refrigerators have condenser coils in a location that can be cleaned by the consumer. This is why you need to call ApplianceQuest to have one of our trained and certified technicians fix your problems.

Be sure the refrigerator is installed in an area where the temperature will not go below 60°F (16°C) or exceed 110°F. Your refrigerator my not cool normally if installed outside of these temperature ranges.

Verify that the refrigerator has proper air clearance. In general, at least 1 inch of clearance is required on each side, top and back of the refrigerator. Clearance requirements may vary model to model. Please consult your owner’s user manual for specific requirements.
Make sure the interior lights are going off when the doors are closed. To check on most models, close the door slowly. The light should go out when the door opening is reduced to approximately 1 inch. If the light stays on, it may produce heat that affects your refrigerator temperature.

If the refrigerator door is misaligned, the light will stay on. If the light stays on, your refrigerator will not cool properly. Adjust refrigerator doors.

Your refrigerator may be in its Defrost Cycle.

If the above items do not fix the issue, you may need to schedule service. Call ApplianceQuest today 888-817-2455
MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE UNIT PLUGGED IN UNTIL THE TECHNICIAN ARRIVES. This is to insure that the symptoms will not disappear.

Refrigerator Cleaning Tips

How to clean the interior, exterior, and gaskets:

You should thoroughly clean your refrigerator at least once a year. Here are some steps for giving your refrigerator a proper cleaning:

Turn the temperature control to OFF

Unplug the refrigerator

Mix together 1 – 2 tablespoons of baking soda with one quart of water

Wipe down the walls of the refrigerator with this solution, and then rinse it with water

Wipe the refrigerator dry

Follow the same procedure with cleaning of door gaskets, vegetable drawers, ice storage bin, other plastic parts, glass shelves and wire shelves. Do not take glass from the refrigerator and place under hot water. The extreme temperature change may cause the glass to break.

After cleaning the door gasket apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the door gasket at the hinge side. This will keep the gasket pliable.

On 30 cubic foot side by side models, the matte plastic liner may be cleaned with a bleach-free, non-abrasive cleaner. Do not use any abrasive cleaners. Do not place any plastic parts or glass shelves in the automatic dishwasher.

Do not use any cleaning products that contain petroleum, distillates, detergent, bleach or ammonia, as they could cause damage to your refrigerator.

Cleaning a Frost-free Freezer:

A Frost-free freezer means you never have to defrost your freezer. Frost is removed by air moving and collecting any moisture and depositing it on the cooling coil. The cooling coil periodically warms up just enough to melt the frost, and it then flows down to the drain pan (located behind the base grille) where it is evaporated.

A complete cleaning should be done at least once a year, following these steps:

Unplug freezer or disconnect power.

Remove all frozen food. Wrap frozen food in several layers of newspaper and cover with a blanket. Food will stay frozen for several hours. You may also store frozen food in a cooler, additional refrigerator-freezer, or in a cool area.

Use a clean sponge or a soft cloth. Wash the inside walls with mild detergent in warm water or a solution of two tablespoons (26 mg) baking soda to one quart (0.95 L) warm water.

· Wash exterior surfaces with a mild detergent in warm water.

Rinse well and wipe dry with a clean soft cloth.

Replace all frozen food.

Plug in freezer or reconnect power.

To keep your painted appliance surfaces looking like new use Appliance Polish and Cleaner regularly. This wax-based cleaner and polish goes on easy to remove unwanted grime and dirt and leaves behind a sparkling shine.

IMPORTANT: Do not use abrasive or harsh cleaners such as window sprays, scouring cleansers, flammable fluids, cleaning waxes, concentrated detergents, bleaches or cleansers containing petroleum products on plastic parts, interior and door liners or gaskets. Do not use paper towels, scouring pads, or other harsh cleaning tools. These can scratch or damage materials.

Accessing and Cleaning Condenser Coils

There is typically no need for routine condenser cleaning in a normal home environment; however, if the environment is particularly greasy or dusty, or there is significant pet traffic in the home, the condenser should be cleaned every 2 to 3 months to ensure maximum efficiency.

Follow these steps to clean the condenser:

· Unplug the refrigerator or disconnect the power

· Remove the based grill. Open both doors place your hands along the ends of the grill and push in on the top of the grille while pulling up on the bottom

· Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to clean the grill, the open areas behind the grille and the front surface area

· A coil brush can be purchased to reach the dust between the coils where your vacuum cannot reach. It has soft bristles that will not harm the coils

· Replace the base grill. Line up the grille support tabs with the metal clips and push firmly to snap into place

· Reconnect power

Proper Care of Stainless Steel Kitchen and Laundry Appliances

Properly cared for, stainless steel typically does not rust.

Use of harsh cleaning chemicals may remove the protective oxide layer allowing oxygen, moisture or other corrosives to begin the deterioration process of rusting. Only cleaners recommended for stainless steel should be used for cleaning appliances and these should be thoroughly rinsed off the unit.

A mild dish-washing soap and warm water may be used. After washing, rinse with warm water and DRY thoroughly with a soft towel.

Damage such as scratches or dents that cut below the surface of an appliance may rust if left exposed.

Other metal products (pots, pans, eating utensils, etc) that come in contact with stainless steel, may mar the surface enough to allow spots of rust to develop. Stainless steel may become rust-stained if allowed to come in contact with items that already have rust.

NOT RECOMMENDED: chemical cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, disinfectants.

NOT RECOMMENDED: a harsh, stiff brush or steel wool.

Do NOT use MURIATIC ACID on brickwork or floors when appliances are stainless. Fumes (possibly even from as far away as the garage) may rust all the stainless appliances in a house.

ApplianceQuest technicians will arrive at your home, on time, in uniform and in a lettered vehicle, fully stocked and prepared to complete most services on their first trip.
Cleaning tips for Ceramic Glass and Cook Top

IMPORTANT: Before cleaning, make sure all controls are off and the oven and cooptop are cool. Always follow label instructions on cleaning products and refer to the owner’s manual for more information.

Cleaning Method: Always wipe with a clean, wet cloth or sponge and dry thoroughly to avoid streaking and staining.

Cooktop cleaner is recommended regularly to help avoid scratches, pitting and abrasions and to condition the cooktop. A cooktop scraper is also recommended for stubborn soils and can be ordered as an accessory. The cooktop scraper uses razor blades, so be very careful when using and keep out of the reach of small children.

Light to Moderate Soil: Use paper towels or a clean damp sponge to clean while the cooktop is still warm You may want to wear oven mitts while cleaning the cooktop.

Sugary spills (jellies, candy, syrup) Use the cooktop scraper to clean while the cooktop is still warm. Use cooktop polishing crème and a clean damp paper towel to clean as soon as the cooktop has cooled down. Rub crème into the surface with a damp paper towel or soft cloth. Continue rubbing until the white film disappears.

Heavy soil, dark streaks, specks and discoloration: Use cooktop polishing crème or non-abrasive cleanser. Rub the product into the soil with a damp paper towel or soft cloth.

Burned-on soil: Use cooktop cleaner and a cooktop scraper. Rub cooktop cleaner into the soil. Hold scraper as flat as possible on the surface and scape debris away. Repeat for stubborn spots. Polish with cooktop crème and paper towel.

Metal Marks from Aluminum and Copper

Clean as soon as the cooktop has cooled down. Rub cooktop crème into surface and continue rubbing until white film disappears. Repeat if necessary; it may take several cleanings for the marks to disappear, but they will become less noticeable with each cleaning.

Tiny scratches and abrasions:

Use cooktop crème, as described above. Scratches and abrasions will not affect cooking performance and will become less noticeable each time you clean.

Do not use steel wool, abrasive power cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover or ammonia because they will cause damage to the surface.

To keep your glass cooktop shining link new, we recommend purchasing the Complete Cooktop Care Kit and the Cooktop Scraper. The care kit contains a bottle of Cooktop Cleanier, Cooktop Protectant and several Cooktop cleaning pads. The Cooktop Scraper will aid you in removing stubborn stains.

You may use other products, besides the Cooktop products, but read the label carefully to make sure they are designed for use on your appliance and follow the directions. Spot test on an inconspicuous area to make sure the surface isn’t dulled or damaged by the product.

<![endif]--> Why is there dew or sweat in the refrigerator compartment?

Some moisture in the refrigerator compartment and crisper is normal. Light sweat or humidity may build on interior walls, shelves, bottles, jars and other containers in the refrigerator compartment.

Moisture in Main Refrigerator Compartment

Excess moisture can be a result of the following:

Opening the doors frequently:

Opening the doors frequently can cause sweat or dew to build in the refrigerator compartment. When the doors are opened, humid room air enters the refrigerator. The more often the doors are opened, the faster the humidity builds. Opening the doors less often will help, but may not completely eliminate internal moisture.

Humid environment

During months of high humidity weather here in Florida (especially if a home is not air-conditioned), it is normal for some sweat or moisture to build inside the refrigerator when the room air is humid.

Blocked air vents

Make sure the air vents between the freezer and refrigerator compartments are not blocked. See images below. Objects blocking the vents will cause a decrease in proper air circulation, which can cause temperature and moisture problems. Move any items that could be blocking the vents.

Poor gasket seal

Moisture buildup around the door or on the ceiling suggests an air leak, likely due to a gasket problem. The door gasket should seal all the way around on the door. Make sure that nothing is keeping the gasket from making a good seal.

Call ApplianceQuest today you might need a new gasket seal!

An automatic dishwasher is not worth the space it takes up if it doesn’t get dishes sparkling clean.

One of the most common complaints ApplianceQuest Technicians have and often hear are the dishes not coming out as clean as they used to. Glassware comes out with streaks and spots or appears cloudy and doesn’t look clean.

When an ApplianceQuest technician arrives he will do an inspection and evaluation of the dishwasher and ask the customer what kind of products they are using in the dishwasher.

As long as the appliance is functioning and going through all the cycles, the problem with glassware coming out cloudy, spotty and streaky is often caused by the detergent.

Several states have banned phosphorous from dish washing detergents because it leaks into water ways, causes algae blooms and kills fish. Phosphorus is the ingredient that prevents things from sticking to glassware; however, the health issue outweighs the aesthetics issue. Water quality experts claim the dishes are safe and clean in spite of their appearance.

Well, that isn’t good enough! Modern technology has helped ups over many obstacles in the past, so dish washing companies are scrambling to the first to come up with an effective but environmentally safe product to bring back the shine in glassware.

Until then, people are looking for their own alternatives, like adding lemonade packets to the dish washing detergent or searching for other rinse aides.

Some people are buying commercial grade dish washing products that still contain phosphorous; however, appliance repair technicians advise to check with the manufacturer to make sure your dishwasher can handle these products.

Learn more by watching a video by the investigators who uncovered the source of water spots and streaks left behind by the dishwasher.

A frost build-up inside the freezer usually means that there is a problem in the self-defrost system. You may even have damaged door gaskets. When you open the freezer door, you also let in a blast of warm, often humid air. This moisture usually freezes onto the evaporator coils immediately.

Self-defrost freezers are supposed to self-defrost themselves. Every 6-12 hours they turn off the compressor for a few minutes. A defrost heater then turns on to melt any frost build-up on these coils, which allows the frost and ice to melt, then it drains off to the pan underneath. Unfortunately, though, when a component fails, too much frost can build up on the evaporator coils. With no air flow over the coils, cooling in the freezer compartment becomes almost non-existent.

You can manually defrost your freezer by turning it off for 24-48 hours and turn it back on to see if it begins to work properly. If your freezer now works the way it’s supposed to, test the three other components in the self-defrosting system, the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the defrost timer.

You can visually inspect some defrost heaters to see if there is a break. If it looks physically broken, then it needs to be replaced. Otherwise, check the defrost heater for continuity.

The defrost thermostat, which is just a bi-metal switch, lets current pass through at factory set temperatures. It also prevents current from passing through at the temperatures set by the factory. The set temperatures for the defrost thermostat vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

You can test the defrost timer by manually advancing to the defrost cycle. You can usually manually advance this timer with a screwdriver. Insert the screwdriver into the advancement pinion and turn clockwise a 1/4 to 3/8′s of a turn. The timer should advance out of the defrost cycle in less than an hour.

If, after testing these components, it still does not cool properly, there may be a problem with the refrigerant level and you will need to contact a professional appliance repair person.

To cut down on costs:

Avoid using multiple refrigerators or freezers. An extra refrigerator that is hardly used can cost up to $100 a year.

Keep your freezer full. Food catches and stores cold air, reducing the workload of your freezer.

Reduce the amount of escaping cold air by opening the door once to get all your items.

Buying a new, energy-efficient refrigerator can save a lot of energy and money.

When shopping for a new one:

Select the right size. Larger refrigerators may cost more to run.

Compare features and energy use. Side-by-side models use more energy than top and bottom models.

Compare operating costs using the Energy Guide label.

Sometimes buying a new refrigerator is not in our budget.

Call ApplianceQuest and we will fix you refrigerator today!
