What I like the most about it is that it makes you think. You’ll inevitably run into roadblocks that will require memory, critical thinking and logic. Units Currency Calculator is exactly what it sounds like. It converts between various units and it comes with an added bonus of being a calculator, a notes app and a currency converter all at the same time. The app is nothing fancy but it gets the job done. You’re able to search for the units you wish to convert and then rotate the drum on either side to scroll between units of similar type like meters, kilometers, miles, etc. Switching between different types will require you to either use the side menu via the hamburger button or go back to search. Like I mentioned, the app is also a simple note pad as well. It really doesn’t offer any features beyond plain text input but it can be handy to keeping track of notes related to unit conversions.

On the Mac version, you’ll have access to more or less all the same features as you do on iOS. You can create events, browse from a day, week, month and list views, see upcoming events, add locations to your events and more. The app strives to achieve a customizable looks and feel by letting you configure settings to help it suit your needs. You’ll be able to change skin color, days off, weather display, week start day and even the interval at which the time will adjust. There are tons of configuration and options in VigCal to help tailor the app to your very specific needs.

Like most people, before discovering this application I didn’t even know that printing cheques was an accepted practice, let a along legal. It almost sounds too good to be true. 3volve is loosely based on the concept as 2048. If you’re not familiar, the strategy is essentially to combine tiles by swiping left, right, up and down and merge like-tiles to double their value. Careless doing so would eventually lead to no more space for new tiles to appear and you’d have to start over. In 3volve, however, the tiles are not arranged in a grid but instead an offset hexagon pattern. There are now 6 directions that you can use to merge tiles but instead of combining numerical values, the idea is to group like-animals to evolve them to the next form. The difficulty of these types of games is directly dependant on how many cells you have available and here, we’re still working with the same number since its a 4×4 arrangement. The distinguishing feature in 3volve is that you can merge in 6 directions, which adds both complexity and simplifies things depending on the context.

Crop-Size for iOS is an amazing tool for any amateur and even professional photographer. Available as a universal app for both iPhone and iPad, you can take advantage of iCloud Photo Library to edit all your iPhone shots on the large screen of your iPad. Crop-Size is all about giving you control over your edits. Conventional iPhone editors focus on simplifying the user-experience at the expense of powerful features, but with Crop-Size, you get both the easy-of-use and advanced editing tools. While there is a slight learning curve in using all available features, Crop-Size does provide a helpful how-to snippets as you use the app, making extremely easy to get started and edit your first couple of photos. Just to give you an idea of how powerful Crop-Size can be I’ll highlight one of my favorite features – Programs. When editing multiple photos of the same or similar subject, you can oftentimes find yourself wishing to apply the same edits and adjustments to more than one photo at once. With Programs, you can do just that by recording all edits from one photo and applying countless times on other shots.

Today, we’re taking a look at Animelee for iOS. Available as universal app for both iPhone and iPad, Animelee is an entirely different twist on classic fighting games like Street Fighter and Mortal Combat. As the name suggests, in Animelee, the characters you’ll be fighting are animals of different species. In fact, all species of animals can fight each other and bring unique advantages to the match. Some will be quick like the fox. Others will be more powerful like the bear. Depending on which animal you chose and who your opponent will be, button mashing may or may not be the right decision. The gameplay is what you’d expect. The iconic D-Pad in touch form on the left and action button on the right resemble a physical controller that you might find on a console. Using various combinations you can perform standard attacks and special moves that inflict more damage. The first animal to deplete the opponents health with the round. Best 2 of 3 will win the match.

Slippy Sam is a brutally simple game. It won’t marvel you with its graphics and engulfing game play. It won’t even entertain you for all that long. What it will do, however, is occupy those small bits of time you have amidst your busy schedule because let’s be honest. Who has time for boredom? Playing Slippy Sam just takes one finger. Your little yellow character will roll from one side of the screen to the other depending where you place your finger. Tap left to go left. Tap right to go the other way. Simple. The idea is to avoid falling crates that resemble bite-size jail cells. You don’t want to get stuck in one of those so keep moving. The longer you keep up the charade, the higher the score at the end of your boredom sprint.

Yolo Rush is a colorful, match 3 game available on Android free of charge. It resembles many other match-three type games available on mobile today but adds unique concepts, characters and powerups to spice up the gameplay. The premise is simple. The two players are represented by their heros. Each must match 3 gems to attack the opposing side. Matching more than 3 gems brings along explosive powerups and other goodies to help defeat the opponent. At the same time, speed is key to reaching fever mode, where each match holds significantly more weight in attack strength and gem explosiveness. The player to successfully drop their opponent’s health points to zero wins the battle! Each round of fighting brings alon potential to collect gems, stars, collect more heroes and build a powerful arsenal of powerups.

Overall, I though Yolo Rush was a really immersive experience. From the graphics to the playful music, Yolo Rush grabs the player’s attentions and keeps them in the game. On the other hand, it’s not so involved that it requires a long time to play making it perfect for brief periods of boredom. The biggest pet peeve of mine when it comes to starting any game is the lack of instruction or tutorial. With Yolo Rush, this is not the case. A helpful and easy-to-follow guide steps through the key features and actions to help solidify the foundational knowledge to play Yolo Rush. Not that there’s really that much knowledge required, but it’s nice to get a good background. For anyone looking for a fast-paced puzzle, this is it.

Crazy Zombies Game is a cool spin on these monsters. It is a level-based, 2D shooter, which sort of resembles Angry Birds. The idea is simple, tap and drag to aim your gun at your zombie targets and shoot. Bullets will bounce off walls and follow their natural trajectory. This becomes relevant when you need to kill more than one zombie with a single bullet or when zombies hide in areas that you can’t reach directly. In fact, that’s the hardest part about the game. You can always land the initial shot with precision but the bouncing from walls get tricky. I’d say the gameplay is almost a cross between Billiards and Angry Birds. As you progress through the levels, the challenges get increasingly more difficult. Zombies begin walking, hiding in tough-to-reach places, and obstacles prevent direct access to the zombie brains. Did I mention headshots get you extra points?

BC Blackjack is 3D blackjack simulator that will get you as close as physically possible to real blackjack on an iOS device. Available as universal app for both iPhone and iPad, BC Blackjack is free to download and includes expansion-style in-app purchases. Getting started with BC Blackjack is incredibly easy. A tutorial with popups will show you all the necessary control and get you started playing the game. Helpful tooltips will reveal how to navigate between screens, start games, place bets, and much more. It won’t be long before you’ve mastered the app. Within the app you’ll also find basic strategy and tips on how to improve your blackjack game in the app and in the real world at the casino. With cool 3D animations and realistic game play, BC Blackjack will be the best way to learn and master your blackjack skill on the go.

It seems intuitive for the same devices that take extraordinary video footage to be able to edit and composite the clips into a production-quality product. Many tools exists to make this a reality, include MovieShop for iOS. MovieShop is available on both the iPhone and iPad as a universal, one-time fee app. It offers extensive functionality for editing video, audio and even stickers and photos. Any professional-grade editor needs a timeline-style editor and MovieShop features that as well. To enhance the final video product, the app provides transitions, filters, sounds effects and other goodies that are often found in desktop-level editing software. With some many tools at your disposal at your fingertips, the possibilities are endless.

MovieShop offers tons of features and functionality, however, my biggest problem with it is user experience. Tools and features are useless if you can’t figure out how to make use of them. From the very get go, you’ll be thrown into a massive guide on how to use the app, and that seems useful, but hardly intuitive. Without reading the guide, its virtually impossible to use the app as all icons and symbols are cryptic. The navigation, menus and buttons look really dated and don’t resemble anything you’d see in a modern app. Often times, you’ll find getting bombarded with panels sliding from the bottom to prompt for action, which makes navigation very confusing. Overall, it is incredibly difficult to use MovieShop and the learning curve is the steepest I’ve encountered of any app. MovieShop has potential. With enhanced UX and fluid usability it can provide amazing utility in editing video on the go. For now, I just don’t think it’s quite ready.

Ogg for Mac is a cool, old-school-style puzzle game. It’s basic principle is to help Ogg solve challenges by directing his dropped objects with deflectors to the right targets. At the beginning the number of flips required to solve the puzzle isn’t very large, usually just one, but as you progress through the game the levels get more challenging and the game gets you thinking more and more. You’ll also encounter cool enemies and occasionally helpful buddies that make the challenge possible. The game in general has a lot of quirky humor, which makes it much less boring than an ordinary puzzle. What I like about the Mac version of Ogg is that you could resize the window to a comfortable level and have the game hanging out in the background so you could pick up where you left off in between tasks.

Ogg! for iOS is about a caveman named Ogg who lives in the prehistoric times when the dinosaurs roamed the plains. The premise of the game is to help Ogg solve his day-to-day tasks by flipping boards, bones and switches in the right directions so that he’s able to hit the target with various tools. Ogg is always positioned at the top of the screen and he’ll want to drop some object. Depending on the directions the deflectors are facing, the object will bounce and roll in the logical direction. While the game is not strictly-speaking physics-based, it does have an engine to determine momentum, drag and other factor that affect the object. The idea is that you must tap and rotate the deflectors such that the object travels along the correct path and collects all the stars, power ups, etc. Upon successful completion you’ll move on to the next level and so on.
