The Seattle Times is located in an 81 year old historic building in South Lake Union. They are marketing to developers but the 2.5 acre block is not for sale but is listed as a ground lease.

The Times will move to a new larger building.

“Our overall objective is to see all assets contribute positively to the bottom line in support of our journalistic mission,” Times spokeswoman Jill Mackie said.

South Lake Union has become a sought after development site in recent years with headquarters for  Amazon.com’s new 1.7-million-square-foot headquarters complex only steps away from the current Times building.

Another 300,000 square feet of office buildings in South Lake Union have been proposed  in addition to the Seattle apts according to http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2016465156_timeshq11.html.

Weidner Apartment Homes decided to donate the money after discovering that the program was struggling financially.

“We wanted to make sure it continued to develop and grow and increase the student body in it,” Marie Virgilio said. “We wanted to make sure the students got scholarships and also while making the program more stable going forward should there even be more budget cuts.

“There aren’t a lot of residential property management programs out there,” she said. “The ones that are starting to come out aren’t as developed as this program. The building contains 324 units and is the only Four-Star Built Green certified residential tower in the city. It seems a complex set of agreements reaching back to 1990 has been discovered and must be analyzed before construction just north of CenturyLink Field can begin.

Developers will build 700 apartments and condos and 16,000 square feet of retail space. Originally a parking garage was to be built there but funding was halted in 2007 leaving a four story shell. It will be razed so  construction on the apartments can begin immediately.

A five story apartment building will be constructed on the garage site. The structure will house 164 units. The apartment building will include retail and parking space on the bottom floor. The other four floors will be apartments. Groundbreaking is scheduled next week for a mega business/residential complex that will feature 700 apartment units for those considering a Seattle rental in the future. A block party has been scheduled to celebrate the groundbreaking.

CenturyLink Field will lose 500 parking spaces during construction and some fans are concerned about it.

“No, they should not be concerned. There will be 900 more stalls,” said  developer Kevin Daniels, who signed the purchase papers Friday after planning the project for 15 years.

“We’re trying to enliven the neighborhood in concert with the stadiums,” he said.
