In today’s market, we know that quality home essentials can be costly. Therefore, when a
seemingly cheaper option becomes available, some of us jump at the opportunity to save some money
and have nice items in our homes. This is great! However, not everything that we come across is going
to be as good as we think. Take carpet for example. Those of us that like carpet in the home tend to
head toward the plusher side of things. This said, that is not always the most fiscally feasible option that
is available on the market. That is why some people lean toward recycled carpet. While it seems like a
win-win situation, with thinking you’re helping the environment, and making your wallet happy, it might not be all it’s cracked up to be.

Normally, carpet can last five to fifteen years, depending on the material and the underlying
padding. Recycled carpet though only lasts about two to three years due to its inability to withstand
wear and tear over a longer length of time. Thus, the consumer then must keep replacing the recycled
carpet, much faster than you would if regular arpet was purchased. Because carpet naturally gets
walked on by its owners, guests and even pets, the material that your carpet is made out of is
important. Not only does it matte and wear down fast, but recycled carpet is also harder to clean than
regular carpet. You may be asking yourself why? Well, this is because of a couple different things.

Firstly, the fibers in the carpet have no elasticity. This is important for cleaning and regular maintenance purposes, such as vacuuming. A lack of elasticity is also one of the causes of its poor shelf life. Now, because recycled carpet is made from petroleum based synthetic fiber (crude oil), harsher cleaning solutions are needed to address stains in the fibers. This might not be what you want to hear, seeing as most people are trying to get rid of harsh cleaning solutions within the home. The next point we want to cover is the cosmetic side. As aforementioned, carpet that has been made from recycled material mattes down and needs to be replaced at a faster rate. The reason being that the fibers are plastic. This means that they are rigid and unforgiving, which causes them to distort easily. So, cosmetically, recycled carpet might not be the best choice.

Now, I know that cosmetics is not the only thing to care about sometimes when it comes to the
environment. That is completely understandable. Nevertheless, with the additional responsibility and
purchasing that comes with recycled carpet, it might be best to stick to regular carpet. Having harsh
chemicals in your home and having to keep acquiring a replacement every two to three years doesn’t
sound like something that most people can or want to do. You also might not want items made
essentially from crude oil in your dwelling place. Not to mention the cosmetic downside. It is
understandable to want to save some money and do something better for the environment in the
meantime, but the consumer needs to be aware of the upkeep and financial responsibility that comes with it.

Unfortunately, the carpet cleaning industry is one where nobody really speaks the truth about carpet cleaning and the facts surrounding the process. These days, it seems more about sales and marketing schemes to try and turn more profit. I mean, i get it to a degree as people have to survive and earn a living to support their families, but is there too much garbage nonsnese going on? There really is no discussion about this and the answer is absolutely YES! Let’s discuss it.
The carpet cleaning industry has been around since the 1940’s and has helped many families maintain their homes through the years. I mean, come on, carpet cleaning is not exactly a job that everyone wants to do and that’s understandable as it hard physical work. Most families so their best to maintain their carpet, but then again, some don’t! Vacuuming your carpet is not difficult, but many put it off and over time carpet just get’s soiled to the point of needing a good cleaning. This is where the marketing begins right? The good old carpet cleaning special, “We will clean every room in your home for $49.95 and everything will be great! Yeah right, but unfortunately, that’s not really how it works. Again, carpet cleaning is physical work which nobody wants to do anymore right? So finding good employee’s that show up for work, clean carpet all day and work extremely hard for percentage of 49.95 in today economy…I don’t think so! The be real here, we no longer live in that work, it simply doesn’t exist!
Good employee’s must be paid a good wage, trained properly and given the proper tools to do the job, so this takes time and money. Not to mention product cost, vehicle cost, fuel cost, insurance cost, payroll cost and everything else to run a business all for $49.95 right? Wrong, that’s simply not how it works! The average cost for a carpet cleaning company to send a technician out to your home is between $80.00 to $100.00 averaging all the costs involved. I think you get the point, let’s move on.
Cleaning the average single family home, 3 rooms of carpet, staircase and few hallways takes roughly 2 hours or more including set-up time. Typically, dealing with different types of stains from pet urine, coffee, wine, tea, beer and just about anything else from make-up to dish detergent and you get the point. Bottom line, this takes time and money. Some companies will use a pre-mix with solution tanks around 75-100 gallon capacities. A pre-mix depending on the mix ration can cost between $3.50 and $8.00 per gallon. Most homes can consume between 20-40 gallons depending on the method of carpet cleaning being used. Using a purge method or rotary extraction can use twice a much product depending on the square footage. Not to mention, some companies are using 100% organic cleaning solutions which cost even more. Carpet cleaning is like anything else, you get what you pay for.
Bottom line, be reasonable if you want a “REAL” carpet cleaning that does the job and makes you happy! There are always going to be marketing schemes and basic BS, but there are major differences listed above that you should consider when looking for a carpet service. You get what you pay for…period!

Everybody wants beautiful green grass and for their landscape to look appealing. That is why artificial turf is becoming exceedingly more popular in residential homes. The appeal is definitely there. Saving time and money with eliminating the task of watering your lawn, not having to mow, and just knowing that your yard will look good no matter what. With this said, it might not be as dreamy as you may think. While artificial grass seems like a low maintenance option, it really does require certain upkeep. That being said, if your home consists of pets, it might not be the most sanitary option.
Let’s talk about some of the problems and upkeep that artificial turf can bring with its initial purchase. Firstly, artificial turf does not come without upkeep and maintenance. Unlike real grass, turf does not grow. Including this, when turf is installed, the area can not just be reseeded or brought back to life with work. It has to be completely taken out and redone. This may not sound like a big deal, but with changing weather and a busy household, your seemingly low maintenance decision could turn into a high cost decision. Real greenery has the ability to absorb, bounce back, and regrow when harsh weather or even pets come along and use the grass at their oasis. Artificial turf however, does not have that option. Now, speaking of pets, this brings about another issue with artificial flora. We all love our furry friends, but we know they have to go outside quite a bit to use the restroom. Some owners strictly take their pets on walks, others let them in the backyard or even front yard if they’re off leash trained, and some pet owners do both of these things. When it comes to our pets going to the bathroom, we as owners normally clean up after them. This is normally not a big deal as natural grass is part of the ecosystem and is designed to take things in and decompose of natural waste. As mentioned in the earlier section of this paragraph, artificial turf does not allow for that. This means that whenever your pets goes to the bathroom on your artificial lawn, the bacteria from that action is not absorbed into soil and decomposed. This can potentially be tracked into your home, and could not be as sanitary as you might have thought artificial grass was.
In conclusion, while artificial turf does seem like a dreamy option, you might not realize what you’re getting yourself into. While the majority believe that there is little to no maintenance involved with artificial turf, over time you will have to replace it. This can become costly as time goes on. Furthermore, we love our pets, but probably don’t want their waste being tracked into the place that we live. As always, if this is the option you choose, we don’t want you to be blindsided by potential care and future maintenance of artificial grass. We wish you the best in your lawn care endeavors.

As a pet owner, I understand that sometimes our furry little friends pick some of the most
upsetting places to handle their business. This can be an extremely irritating situation, and in
some cases require professional care. Urine is an extremely acidic substance and can cause
damage to your leather Sofa, Rug, Clothing, and personal items. This is due to the enzymes,
bacteria, and proteins found within pet urine, this makes it extremely important to handle the
situation quickly, and correctly as the longer, it stays the more it will smell, and become
stubborn to remove. Luckily, there are many precautions, and actions you can take to mitigate
or even solve the situation depending on the severity. To find the correct solution for you we
must determine the severity of the damage, we recommend contacting us or viewing this article.

White Vinegar – White Distilled Vinegar is one of the best cleaning products you will find, this is
because it is %100 natural, and removes the nasty bacteria, and mercaptans that cause odor,
and unsanitary conditions. Leather acts as a sponge, and will naturally soak up any liquids that
come into contact, most upholstery leathers are finished with a wax or protectant, but urine can
still penetrate, and soak into the leather.
Step One – Take paper towels, or rags, and soak up as much of the urine on the leather
surface, this will allow the leather to soak up the Vinegar and sanitize while removing deep
odors.
Step Two – Create a 50/50 mix of White Distilled Vinegar and Water in a bowl. The amount
used will vary depending on the cleaning surface area but a good starting point is 1-2 cups of
Water, and Vinegar.
Step Three – Take the solution and apply it to the leather surface with a white rag, or cloth.
Make sure the leather has soaked up as much of the solution as possible.
Step Four – Find a well-ventilated area, and allow the leather to dry completely, you can then
add a leather conditioner or protector of your choice.
Enzyme Cleaner – This method works best for leather clothes, and covers but will also work
with most other leather upholstery.
Step One – You will want to gather a plastic tub or another leather-safe container, you should
then proceed to remove any covers from couch cushions or pillows.
Step Two – Take a leather-safe enzyme cleaner, and apply a generous amount to the surface of
the leather. Make sure to allow the leather to be completely, and equally covered by the cleaner.
Step Three – Let the leathers dry, the length of time will depend on environmental conditions,
and the size of the cleaning surface, if the smell persists repeat this process until the odor is
removed.
Step Four – To prevent the leather from cracking you should apply a leather conditioner or
protector of your choice you can apply this process before or after you reassemble any covers.

It’s unfortunate that this article has to be written, but during the covid 19 pandemic, many people are asking how to sanitize their carpet properly. The problem with sanitizing your carpet is not the process itself, but the products being used to sanitize. At the end of the day, sanitizing your carpet incorrectly, can do more damage than good. So taking the time to properly learn the process is important!
To begin, the first mistake is thinking that aersol deodorizers are your friend when it comes to sanitizing your carpet. To be honest, aersol deodorizers are the last thing you want to use! Aersol deodorizers are great for counters, bathroom surfaces and trash cans, but will do nothing but contaminate your carpet with awful fragrances and chemical by-products. Spray disinfectants are released in an atomized pattern, which is best used to sanitize the air…not carpet! Your carpet, through time, attracts just about everything from dust debris, to bacteria from pets and shoes. In order for your carpet to be sanitized, it must be flushed from the fiber down to the backing and then extracted, along with the contaminants. This is the only way to clean and sanitize carpet correctly and achieve results that actually work.
Your best option is to have your carpet professionally cleaned or rent a carpet cleaner from a local store. If you choose to rent a carpet cleaning machine, be sure to do your research on the machine being used. Second, choosing the correct producs is key to good results. Here’s what to look for…
1. Detergent free is important, as your trying to sanitize your carpet, stain removal is not a concern if sanitizing is your goal.
2. Solvent based products are a terrible option, as this will contaminate your carpet even further with toxic chemicals that release VOC’s into the air.
3. Oxygenated or Oxy products with fancy fragrances will do nothing, so please don’t waste your time!
4. Organic products containing digestive properties is what your looking for. Digestors contain good bacteria that essentially eats and destroys bad bacteria. These types of products can be purchased at janitorial supply stores.
My next statement is pretty generic, but very true, as reading the instruction label is super important. Any product sold to sanitize and destroy bacterial issues, should be used with care. If not, as mentioned above, you will do more harm thann good!
In closing, my personal recommendation is to have your carpet professionally cleaned, as your end result will be better, saving you time and money. If DIY projects are your thing, pay attention to everything mentioned above. Rental carpet cleaning machines can be difficult to use, so be sure you understand the proper functions of the machine and know how to mix your product properly.

Whether new or old, we all love our cotton fabrics. From the softness, comfortability, and affordability it can bring, it seems like a no brainer to grab up the nearest item made from cotton material at your store. Nonetheless, this might not be the case when it comes to your everyday upholstered furniture. Knowing what we know, it might be hard to not only have a good quality cotton piece of furniture that lasts, but care for it in the meantime as well.

Because cotton is sort of a staple for the average consumer, you might be wondering why we are steering toward caution when it comes to the popular material. Well firstly, over time cotton is prone to discoloration and easy staining. Not only that, but a lower quality cotton has a lesser shelf life than that of a more durable fabric or leather. This comes from many different factors that we will talk about next. When you think about your white cotton shirts in combination with staining, most likely you will think of the dreaded yellow rings that form underneath the axilla region, more commonly known as the armpit. This is because of a chemical reaction between your sweat and aluminums etc.. found in anti-perspirants. This is somewhat commonly known, and can be extremely difficult to perform a successful stain removal on one of these bad boys. However, what is less known is that this can happen on your furniture and other everyday items made from a cloth structure. Aluminum is found in many things you might use every day. Things like aluminum foil, packages, paints, electronics, its used as a common metal in construction, and even our water. This lucky number thirteen is found pretty much everywhere. Naturally, we come into contact with these things in life, and whether we like it or not, all living mammals sweat daily. This said, it isn’t far off to assume that this reaction can happen to your furniture just as it does to your t-shirts as shared in the previous sentiment above. Including this, cotton is a material that has a high water retention. Leaving it to absorb stains easier.

Another topic that we could mention is transferability of fabric dyes. While it is something that is not exciting to deal with, certain clothing can potentially leave their mark, quite literally, on your cotton pieces. This is hard to contend with because, as the name suggests, it is a dye that can be difficult to clean and remove. Also, spaces with a good amount of natural lighting can eventually cause issues with your hard-earned furniture. A consistent exposure to sunlight can discolor and/or break down material over time. Leaving cotton fibers vulnerable to breakage and an overall dull look to your furniture/other cotton décor items. This can be described as sun bleaching, where in the end it is not repairable and is cause for their replacement. Foregoing, if you are able, and decide to wash your cotton pieces, things such as fabric softeners can cause a delta degradation in material. I know, say it isn’t so! That snuggle softness with the beautiful lavender scent could actually be the cause of dark dingy stains in your cloth. Furthermore, in terms of durability, a quality leather is usually the best option. Cotton can be strong and last if it is manufactured correctly and woven tight enough. Though, unless you know the material well, or have seen it manufacturing, it’s hard to know whether you have a good quality of fabric. If not done correctly, it is prone to snagging, and stain penetration, making it much harder to service.

Overall, that soft cotton that we know, and love is great for your clothing – that you can care for often and discard if necessary – but it might not be the easiest choice for things like couches and other furniture that might not get as much attention in our busy lives.

An uncomfortable subject, we know. However, it is important to know what exactly the cause is of that pesky stain your dog leaves behind after leaving you a present on your carpet. We all know that because of the way digestive systems work, the essential nutrients and proteins currently needed will have a place in your dog’s body to take them throughout the day. This said, we also know that whatever the body rejects, or does not presently need, will be discarded through the rectum in the form of feces.
This process is just a way of life, and essential for the overall well being of an organism. Though this is the case, it presents itself as an issue when, in the case of a canine, this process is done within the confines of a home. Whether we it or not, sooner or later this has happened to most pet parents out there, and while we love our canine family members, the clean up is never sunshine and rainbows. And sometimes, the stain that is left behind is one of the worst parts. Now of course, the initial cause of the stain is the fact that there is matter on the area that is meant for disposal consisting of food undigested from the body. However, have you ever though that your dog’s food could be like adding fire to fire when the unfortunate happens? Not only is it possible that common dog food ingredients could be the cause of worse staining, it could also potentially be the cause of health issues that can occur.
Before listing some things that could be harmful to not only your pet, but your carpets, it is important to note that through research we have compiled, this is a matter of opinion. It is important to do your own research if you are curious about dog food ingredients, and always talk to a veterinarian about any concerns you may have in regard to this. This stated, things to consider when talking about the aforementioned statements are both dyes and oils found in some commonly used dog foods. Firstly, there are dyes. Dyes like Red Dye 40 and Caramel Color can both be found in dog foods. If your thinking you’ve heard of these before, you probably have. Both Red Dye and Caramel Color can potentially be/contain carcinogens. Red Dye, commonly relatedly to ADHD in humans, and just like people it can lead to hyperactivity, inability to retain attention, and an impulsive behavior in pets. Needless to say these are in fact called “dyes” and are used to color foods. So, it can be inferred that these dyes can be discarded with the rest of the unwanted waste right onto your floors. Leading to further difficulty in stain removal. This same logic can be applied to oils and Fats within kibble. Now, while saturated fats in fact are solid at room temperature, the opposite is the case of unsaturated fats. We have found that some dog foods do contain unsaturated fats, making them liquid at room temperature. Which would be the case if your dog had an accident on your carpet. Additionally, fish oil is a common ingredient in dog foods, as well as other oils. While fish oil is a good source of Omega-3’s for your pup or feline, you most definitely would not want it on items in your home. As mentioned above, in our opinion, it could be possible that these fats and oils (not all being bad for your pet) can cause a more imbedded stain if it came in to contact with an upholstered/ carpeted area.
In conclusion, it is not far off to assume that each of these aspects of dog food ingredients could be forcing you to take extreme effort in cleaning up your pet’s mess. We think that not only can certain additives be harmful to your four-legged family members, but they can also be potentially harmful to your home. While we believe this could be the case, we do not make any medical claims of which should be taken up with a Veterinarian.

The inevitable just happened. Your furry little family member has had an accident on your carpet. Sometimes it can be embarrassing, but it happens to the best of us (even if they have had extensive potty training). Do not fret however, there are many options for pet owners when it comes to eliminating those stains and odors. To see the various options we have found, look at our other articles on the Aqualux website, and explore the many possibilities for you and your home. This article will be specifically for the use of kitty litter. Yes, you heard me right, kitty litter. Since kitty litter’s main function is to keep odors from seeping into the rest of a house, it is no wonder that you can use it to do just that, but in a different way. To make a long story short, the science behind this claim is that kitty litters use enzymes to essentially speed up the reactions that happen between the soil and bacteria. Basically, to put it into a visual statement, enzymes work like a little Pacman to eat away at the protein-based particles in urine.

To start this process, apply scented kitty litter directly to the urine stain, to absorb the odor from the pet urine. Leave the litter there for approximately four to five hours. This is done so you can make sure all the odor and liquid are absorbed. Once you are done waiting, grab your vacuum, and whisk that kitty litter up with ease. Not every litter is suitable for everyone, and we certainly do not claim to be cat litter experts, so we encourage you as the consumer to find the best fit for your home. There are plenty of options that you can find with a quick search on the internet. Take a look at all of the different choices you are able to find, and decide which brand and litter best fits your criteria. This option is a great way to easily clean up your baby’s accident without breaking your back, or the bank. Not only is this option affordable, lasting for years (when used as a spot treatment), it can also serve as a non-toxic and biodegradable way to keep your carpet fresh after an accident. Including these statements, a lot of kitty litters are safe for the environment, and of course safe for pets, considering it is a pet product.

In conclusion, kitty litter is not the only thing you can use to clean up your pet’s little mess, but it is a great, low-cost way to eliminate those pesky odors in between cleanings. Try it out for yourself, and you be the judge of its effectiveness. Like mentioned above, we have some other good articles discussing various other options, so you can feel comfortable with your decision. As always, if you feel a professional carpet clean is your best bet, give us a call and we will be happy to help. Keep those babies happy and those carpets fresh!Kitty

If you have a doggie door and are tired of the common look in your home, then continue reading this article. The most common reason people get doggie doors is for the freedom and convenience it brings their dog when they need to go outside. It’s especially helpful when the owner works during the day and doesn’t want to crate their animal, also allowing them to get their playful energy out before you arrive home. Thus, most who enjoy this convenience have a simple door bought from the manufacturer. Almost all the time when we see amazing looking pet spaces, they are normally comprised by a designer on television. Either this, or the space is created by someone who took a lot of time out of their schedules to build and decorate the posh dog sanctuaries. However, to make something cute for your dog, you don’t always have to dedicate an entire room to your furry friends.

That being said, if you have a doggie door and don’t have a lot of time available you can designate to crafting, there are a lot of adorable and easy ways to get the job done. One design option includes simply buying a chalkboard and write your pets name in the desired font. You can then hang it up above the little door and you have a cute little personalized decoration for your pup. Another option is building a smaller version of a regular door you would see on your own home and there are so many different designs to choose from if you’re wanting to go this route. Some popular renditions are victorian, modern, and even a hotel style entry. Additionally, adding stylish floor mats, small (pet safe) plants, and décor suitable to your style will really add to the preferred aesthetic you may be trying to achieve. If you’re not sure where to start your DIY process, head over to Pinterest where you can find literally any design option under the sun. There are many cute design ideas with specific directions telling how to achieve your coveted look. DIY stores such as your local Hobby Lobby and Lowes carry decorations and supplies needed to build and decorate your new and improved doggy door.

Now that you’ve read thus far and still don’t know if you’re someone who can fit these DIY’s into your schedule, there are business out there who will customize your dog door for you. While it’s hassle free for the customer, the cost ranges from anywhere to over $200. However, if you do decide to go this route websites like Etsy have some great options. Overall, whether you’ve decided to take on a DIY or to forego the project altogether, remember to have fun decorating your pet’s door. There are too many options out there not to have a perfect customized design for you and your pet. So, keep pinning to your board and scrolling through customized websites until you’re satisfied with the product you will be purchasing.

While wool rugs are very popular, they are also high maintenance when it comes to cleaning. On that premise, adopting the wrong cleaning routine can be detrimental to the endurance of your expensive décor. When you buy wool, you are buying material woven from Sheep’s fur. Because of the natural oils present in the fur, the fibers in wool-woven pieces are naturally antimicrobial, meaning they inhibit or destroy the growth of microorganisms. However, since they are made of animal hairs, the durable floor coverings can become to smell a bit musty over time. To cultivate longevity, it is best to care for your wool pieces with gentle, yet effective, solutions. While letting experts take care of deep cleaning your delicate items with the proper tools is the best option, we’ll provide you with what we think is the safest way to regularly care for your wool rugs/upholstery by citing research we’ve done on the matter.

The first step on the road to a refreshed rug or wool upholstered furniture is to remove dirt as thoroughly and gently as possible. For furniture and heavy items, lightly vacuum the surface area with the hose attachment. While it is possible to vacuum your rug, this could come with the consequence of pulling up fibers and possibly ruining a portion of the material. I recommend simply taking them outside and beating them with either a broom or rug beater. In doing so, you will be able to effectively release the dirt particles in your rug. As far as musty odor is concerned, the safest solution, in my opinion is in your liquor cabinet. Vodka is a great, non-chemical, substance that works well with odor removal. To do so, start by grabbing a spray bottle and pouring the vodka in. Make sure not to add any water in the bottle as the high alcohol content is what directly interacts with the odor on the material. Using a cheap bottle of vodka is perfectly okay in this step, and there is really no need to use an expensive brand, as long as your chosen vodka is flavor free. Next, spritz your rug/upholstery with the liquor, and allow time for them to dry completely, before returning your home furnishing to their original location. While waiting, make sure to not leave your any of your components in direct sunlight, as it can cause bleaching and or yellowing of the wool. Once dry, restore your items to their original spot of your home. Last but not least, the final step is to enjoy your refreshed furnishings!

As stated previously, this method is for those in between times where you are not having your wool professionally cleaned. That being said, your rugs/upholstery should not be professionally done all the time, saving the occasion for every 1-3 years, depending on foot traffic within the home. Always remember, that if taken care of properly, wool rugs and upholstered furniture are durable and a fantastic addition to any home.
