Skimz TurboMagnum skimmer is a commercial-sized recirculating protein skimmer, designed for professional aquaculturists, commercial farms, large public aquariums, and aquatic wholesale holding unit. Tons of water, pieces of thick glass and sharks all around…These are not scenes from a horror movie, but a reality people faced when a 33-ton tank suddenly burst in a Shanghai shopping center. Fifteen people sustained injuries.

­Three lemon sharks and dozens of smaller fish and turtles housed inside the 7-meter-long, 3-meter-high aquarium, became victims of the incident.

CCTV footage shows the majority of people were standing right near the shark-filled aquarium when it literally exploded.

Horrified shoppers fled in panic when shards of 15 centimeter thick protective acrylic glass suddenly gave way, flooding the entrance of the Shanghai Orient Shopping Center on December 19.

Some of the injured, mostly with deep cuts and bruises, managed to stand up and call for help, while some shopping center workers were carried out by their colleagues, witnesses told a local Shanghai daily.

“There were lots of injuries caused by flying glass, some of them serious because the glass was so thick. We are investigating what caused this,” a police spokesman was cited by the Austrian Times.

Eight of the injured were believed to be customers while the rest were shop assistants and security staff.

An official with the shopping center management which owned the aquarium, Chen Yongping, said that they are not going to “build an aquarium again in the future.”

No official reason for the destruction has been given so far, but customers said they believe a sudden temperature drop might have caused an explosion as it dramatically grew colder in Shanghai last week.

The aquarium became a popular when it was opened before the National Day holiday two years ago.

It is not the first time center’s management had problems with the giant tank. Back in June a ruptured water pipe led to the death of two sharks and the removal of several turtles.

A huge slab of sea floor near the Great Barrier Reef is in the early stages of collapse and could generate a tsunami when it finally breaks off, researchers warned Friday.

Marine geologists from Australia’s James Cook University have been using advanced 3D mapping techniques on the deepest parts of the reef — below diving depth — since 2007 and have discovered dozens of sub-marine canyons.

On a recent trip, they came across the one cubic kilometre slab of sea floor, the remains of an ancient underwater landslide, which is perched on the continental shelf.

“Undersea landslides are a well understood geological process but we didn’t know there were any on the Barrier Reef,” geologist Robin Beaman told AFP.

“We found this one large block that stood out. It is sitting on top of a sub-marine canyon, cutting into the slopes and it is in the preliminary stage of collapse.”

He stressed that no one knew when a collapse may occur, “whether tomorrow or even in our lifetime”, but that people should be aware that it was there.

“It is slowly giving way although it remains stable under current conditions,” he said.

“But it is absolutely going to collapse and when it does fall it will fall one kilometre into the adjacent basin.

“This will generate a localised tsunami that will affect the Queensland coastline, which is around 70 kilometres (40 miles) away.

“We’re not trying to alarm people, but we need to know it is there and what could happen when it falls,” he added.

The geologists who made the discovery, which was published in the journal Natural Hazards, were travelling on the Southern Surveyor, an Australian maritime research vessel.

This is the same ship on which scientist Maria Seton last month discovered that a South Pacific landmass identified on Google Earth and world maps as Sandy Island does not exist.

Fans of marine life, time to plan a trip to Singapore.

A new aquarium – which claims to be the world’s largest – opened in late November on the resort island of Sentosa.

It is called the S.E.A. Aquarium, and it is home to 100,000 marine animals of over 800 species in 45 million liters – almost 12 million gallons – of water. Comprising 10 different zones with 49 habitats, the aquarium aims to take visitors on an underwater voyage beginning from Southeast Asia, and continuing through the Arabian Gulf and the open ocean.

The Open Ocean habitat is viewed through the world’s largest viewing panel. It is 36 meters wide and 8.3 meters tall, or about 118 by 27 feet.

Aquarium admission is about $24 for an adult.

“S.E.A. Aquarium offers not only a stunning display of habitats, but also education and conservation programs in which families and guests can participate,” S.E.A. Aquarium Senior Curator Grant Willis said in a news release. “Younger guests will be thrilled to know that we have specially-designed exhibits such as the Discovery Touch Pool, the Lens Aquarium and Floor Aquarium, to provide them up-close encounters with our marine residents.”

Atlanta’s Georgia Aquarium, which opened in 2005, has also claimed to be the world’s largest, with “more than 10 million gallons of water,” according to its website. The Georgia Aquarium was the result of a $250 million gift to the city of Atlanta from Bernie Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot.

The same day the Singapore aquarium opened, the resort also opened the Adventure Cove Waterpark, with six water slides including a water coaster, a wave pool and a lazy river. There are also opportunities for interaction with marine life. Rainbow Reef offers snorkeling with fish and swimming with sting rays. Dolphin and shark interactions are coming next year.
