mayor of Seaton

Imagine living in a Tesco house, sending your child to a Tesco school, swimming in a Tesco pool and, of course, shopping at the local Tesco superstore. According to the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe), the government's adviser on architecture and design, this collective monopoly is not an imaginary dystopia. "Tesco Towns" on this model are already being planned across the UK, from Inverness in Scotland to Seaton in Devon.

Tesco is proposing to build a superstore, hundreds of homes and a hotel in the Devon town.

Hoje atravessei pedras gigantes pra chegar no trabalho.

Hi Jula! Probably you know this guy, who started dancing in several places around the world in 2006 already: <a href="www.wherethehellismatt.com" target="_new" rel="nofollow">www.wherethehellismatt.com</a> He became really famous in youtube and got a sponsor for his second world-tour later on. he was invited to a bunch of tv- and radio-shows and there are several guys around the world trying to do the same. Don´t know if he was the first who came up with the idea of combining holiday-trips, dancing, video and internet-blog but its really quiet interesting how dance as a nonverbal language is an apropriate medium of human expression within our globalized information-networks. keep on blogging and good luck for the RPC-story - quite interesting! Axel

<small>Hi Axel!
Thank you for always commenting on my posts. I didn't know that guy before but checked it out. He is working more on a cultural/social aspect. But I think it is a great idea anyway to choose dance as a international language since we have all the same body (but move it in so many different ways). It is somehow funny to see him dance in the same way all over the world. :-)

architect -

Last week a "street radio" application by Hive Networks (GB) ended in Dortmund near the so called "U-Tower", the former brewing highrise that is now transformed into a centre of culture and art for the Ruhr2010 - the European cultural city in 2010 will be the Ruhrgebiet.
It was possible to follow and participate in the installation "Field Amplification" by four stations - just bring your radio or bluetooth-cell-phone with you and you can switch into the Art of the Electomagnetic Society.

Hivenetworks seek to combine free wireless community networks with content and services supplied by individual users and groups. In existence since 2005, the developer group aims at building a toolkit for the creation of freely configurable communication architectures, which allow one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many communications by linking different protocols such as W-LAN and Bluetooth with the Internet and readily available user devices like mobile phones. The ingenious combination of those technologies allows the creation of new links and new interfaces connecting data spaces to homes, public buildings, and the street. It does so by seeking to use low-cost, mass-produced devices as well as free and open-source software for creating systems that open up new creative possibilities, espacially for participatory art practices, while at the same time subverting existing techno-social hegemonies in a number of ways. Hivewares - the technological systems created by Hivenetworks - subvert the dominance of proprietary networking models such as mobile phone networks, undermine broadcasting systems by using extreme narrowcastings, and break through cost barriers in making available "augmented" reality concepts at a very low cost.
Here in Dortmund, four stations shoulder different workloads. One station is busy scanning the area for Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices and then sending them programme information. Another station receives input from the public via mobile phones. Users can send text messages via SMS, or recordings of the spoken word via their mobile phones, all which are subsequently collated into a radio stream, thereby creating a radio format reflecting the ideas of the public about future uses of the U-Tower. The two other stations are more conventional short-range radio stations, with one station broadcasting the radio play "The Zone" and the other station paying sound artworkds by exhibition artists.
<small>julakim is replying:
Thank you for the comment. So it is already in action somewhere.
Discuter? Architecture of course. To celebrate "la fête de la musique", I started to make something special : you the artists who draw during the great trial, because the fotografy is forbidden? I did the same during a concert. It's a very strange experience to manage to draw under a light show...
by the way the concert was great. Victoria Tibblin , keep rockin' and punkin'

21st of June

The French Minister of Culture decided in 1982 to make a Day for Music. It became the 21st of June. Now it already spread into more than 50 countries.

If there is still nothing going on in your city go out on the 21st of June and play some music in the street. Animate passers-by to make some noise to wake up the good character of your city.
Bonjour,

I'm from... yeah good question, where am I from ? I'm from France but I can't tell you exactly where... The only thing I know it's that I've shared special moments in "Le Mas de la Nojarette" and it was an other planet located in Ardeche !

landscapearchitect

it is the same discussion as: shall we have tourist guides showing the favelas or not. is it bad to look at poverty or not. of course it always seams to be very voyeuristic on one hand but on the other hand turning away from it is also wrong. watching brazilian soap operas leaves the impression there was no poverty, everything was just perfect and life was an ongoing disneyland.

i didnt like the main actor in tropa de elite being a saint all through the film. that was deffinitly too much. t i thought it was smart letting the ngo students use drugs, keeping the business alive. we all use drugs. some of them are legalized, some are not. in the end it all comes down to money issues. and this is what causes the war. thats the sad truth. i thought this was pretty easy to understand. unfortunatelly the brazilian education is one of the worst in the world. most people are not able to think abstract nor willing to think on their own. they basically only see and repeat. they are not used to discuss something nor to develop an idea - i am talking about 90% of the population. this is why you find kids in the street playing the movie and adults loving it. because they dont think about what kind of message is entering the childs head. they also dont even know themselves what they should actually think about it. if nobody tells them what to think, they are a bit lost. the message of a movie like this can only be understood by an educated person. if the brazilian government would invest in education, they would be able to solve so many problems. but they prefer to keep the people stupid. probably because they are afraid they might learn about the corruption and even might learn how to defend and help themselves.

It is not communication to architecture but it shows how communication can change something. They are even analising the impact of each project. So we are somehow getting closer to know what really works.

You can listen to a report on the gang structure in favelas in Rio de Janeiro. At the end he talks about the film 'Tropa de Elite'.
Unfortunately just in German: <a href="http://ondemand-mp3.dradio.de/file/dradio/2008/01/28/dlf_20080128_0952_d14ea30f.mp3" rel="nofollow">Bandenstruktur in den Favelas</a>

In the <a href="http://www.nextroom.at/publication_preview.php?publication_id=13106&article_id=&picture_id=5248&lang_id=en" target="_blank" title="to see the cover" rel="nofollow">StadtBauWelt 176</a> (21dec2007) I read an interesting article from Rober Neuwirth. The title in German is '"... um nie wieder die Rückseite der Stadt zu verachten ..."' (= " ... to never disregard the back side of the city ...").

He clears out some myths.

<strong>01 Slums</strong> typify human suffering
In the favela people did live the American Dream from dishwasher to millionaire. Rocinha is an example for that. It started as Rocinha ( = "small farm") and now it is a district where every house is connected to water and electricity supply. 'Who is living in Rocnha has no reason to leave. You can get everything here."

<strong>02 Everyone</strong> who lives in a slum is poor
Kibera (southwest of Nairobi, Kenia) has no water, no disposal or sanitation but a good working commercial structure: supermarkets, clinics, hair dressers, schools, telephone exchange, and churches.
The inhabitants represent all social classes. Squatters are economically, politically and socially as assorted as any other residential zone.

<strong>03 Squatters</strong> are enemies of the civilised society and are disapproving of being a part of it
First precondition is a waranty against arbitrary expulsion. Because than they start to invest and make the best of it.
Second precondition is an access to politics or public organs.

<small>julakim is replying:
In the same edition you can read an article about the contradictory geography of the favela (='Die widersprüchjliche Geographie der Favela') by Daniela Fabricius. She gives an overview on 'Rocinha - the favela as a town', 'Providencia - Rio's oldest favela', and explains some facts like:
gatos (=cats) < an inofficial and most of the time illegal branch connection to water, electricity, phone, TV >
Vans (=shuttle bus) < the inofficial public transport > In Mexico City they displaced the public transport.

I think these two articles show the independency of these home grown urban spaces. We shouldn't show up there offering solutions for everything. We had this during colonization time and we know the end of the story.

architect, comic designer

I think that people just need violence. I can be the reality of Rio (I think so) but it is also an action movie, the last cool action movie from the cool dangerous favelas. And the people will see the movie and say : yes it's horrible, the violence, how can it be true? and denn go to the restaurant and order a bloody steak.

WE NEED POSITIVE ENERGY, NOT VIOLENCE.
And by the way, a film has never changed something in the world, but I think a positive movie can do the people happier, just for an instant; that's what i call positive energy.

take care

This refers to Florian.

What am I to say about this little sequence?
Are all these dancers afraid? Do they work hard? They seem to be very interested in what they are doing - but then again: they are all sunbleached. what does this mean? what do I feel looking at them? Their faces are not important, their bodies are - and then again; sunbleached! ? ! ? ?
What are they afraid of? Once again music can, does give an answer: and in this music there is no pain, no fear , just being - or just being together, and this can help against every bad feeling - now and for all times.

Ach, was muss man oft von boesen Goeren
lesen oder hoeren!
Die, statt daheim am Herd zu bleiben,
im Sueden umeinand sich treiben!
Ins Land der Caipirinha ziehn,
Kehrwoch, deutschem Sonntag fliehn,
und, mit Hilf der Radiowellen,
Freigeist in den Aether stellen!
Empoerung macht sich in mir breit,
betracht ich solch´ Verkommenheit!

btgms - architect

It took me a while to sum up the article I read on a weekly german newspaper - but here it is:

The Soul of Rio

On the weekly newspaper „Die Zeit“ (09/06/07) I found an article where the change of Rio during the last decades is described:
On the example of two quarters the author shows the new relationship between the inhabitants and the districts. The districts Lapa and Santa Teresa changed from favelas ruled by drugs, fear and violence on one hand and on the other under landslips into hip quarters where the inhabitants care about the image of their home.
In the meantime, the city has discovered its neglected parts: Santa Teresa is a big part during the day, and Lapa from dusk till dawn, when the people quit the blossomed streets of Santa Teresa towards the nightlife of Lapa.
You can say, a new melting pot emerged in the middle of Rio. The two districts combine culture, music, citizens†initiative, old bohemians with hip artists and the simple life of the residents and more and more tourists.
Through the stick-together of the inhabitants, they won the struggle against drugs and dealers for a better life with the annual art festival and the magnificent view over the beach and the skyline.
Nowadays, on the streets of Lapa and Santa Teresa, you can find favela-children, rich people from other outskirts, hippies, snobbish girlies, tourists and artists …. All together they live their own life but in the same areas – what a wonderful prototype for living elsewhere!

And here is the whole articel in German:

I find very interesting the idea of knowing a State and its culture by staying there for long time and by dancing in its space. Following the link you can find more information about a dance performance at the MAC.

<br />

BR 2 - Freitag, 31. August 2007, 20:30 Uhr (Ursendung)
Autor(en): Ania Mauruschat (BRD 1976)
Produktion: BR 2007 stereo ~ 55 Min. - Feature
Regie: Ania Mauruschat
Inhaltsangabe:

<strong>Every internet-user should keep in mind the reverse of the medal.</strong>

<small>julakim is saying:
okay, I won't translate everything, but will help you to understand her last phrase.

pio is quoting a radio feature talking about the negative effects of the web 2.0.
The internet - a so-called open and democratic universe - is as well a 'big brother is watching you'-machine. Every movement is registered and we are not aware of how people (or rather big concerns!) are using this data.

Nevertheless I still would like you to participate on my blog.</small>

dd.r, architect and comic designer,

I saw this marvellous "Living room" dance piece when I was in Rio. I knew nothing about dance for 2 years ago, but everytime I see a new performance, I realize the universality of dancing. It works with emotions, body , music, and finally architecture. When I look at the dancers, I see first an human body, exactly the same sensation that I have when I want to start to paint someone. At the end, It is a moving mirror that show us our own human body and soul. I think that's the reason because I feel so involved when I seat in this "Living Room". Thanks to Andrea, and thanks to you, Julakim, for this experience.

Hi Jula! Its me Axel again, finally responding to your posts. Thank you for all the nice impressions of semana santa (interview and picture-show). I was visiting this event in 2004 and its good to know, it still exists and continues to unite people in a peaceful way. Especially in the last days violence must have been dominated the atmosphere in Rio again as I heard in the news. Will this conflict ever been solved??? So I send you my best wishes for your ongoing research (take all the time you need!) on ar2com and take care! paz e arroz e tudo de bom...

Didier from Brussels, architect and cartoonist.

Hello, I would like to present here my personal theory concerning the relationship between the city and the community:
I take for example an existing city district; it has his qualities and his failings. A small part of the inhabitants decides to make something to ameliorate the living quality. A new community is growing and becomes the dynamic power of the district. This community is also an ideological group and becomes slowly homogeneous. These ideas attract foreign people in the district and the mix of people disappears step by step. The district is finally changed, a community is now installed
until a few people of this community want to change something in the quiet harmony of the new way to live in the district. And this process always comes back again.

Conclusion: I think that people goes while architecture stays. There is always a gap of a few decades between both.

Hi Jula, hi listeners! Thank you for this chapter - now I have a more personal view on your surrounding. I think its very important for authors and also for academics to include the personal situation and auto-reflection in their work. Cultural scientists call this phenomena the observer of third order. Well I think you, as a arquetist (liked that one) fit well in your surrounding and I personally think architecture should always communicate with its surrounding. Niemeyer is certainly one of the most famous arquetists who followed this concept and he is living in Rio! Rio is the most communicative city I know and even if there are lots of different systems in that metropole, there is communication between them. So if Santa Tereza is having a district party, its a kind of immaterial architecture which was constructed to self-describe the "bairro". Now it comes to interest, how Santa Teresa (that means its inhabitants) are inter-acting with its surrounding. Is it possible to develop an architecture which serves as space for communication with its surrounding (the other districts, the tourists, the new ground-buyer)? Café e Cama is probably one example of such architecture, so keep on researching on this topic. I am also curious to read, what architects and other podcast-listeners think about it. cheers and greetings from Berlin PS: forgot to post my occupation: freelancer in arts-management and media (tv).

linguist + humanitarian association

Roger Willemsen - Die Zeit # 10/2007 p. 46 - /Feuilleton/Diskothek

E: "In the entire universe of art there is but architecture and music to create spaces."
Roger Willemsen is starting a new column in the german weekly "Die Zeit", where he will talk about his paradises of music.
