Travis Alexander was killed by Jodi Arias on June 4 2008.  His time of birth is now available – 0.01 am on July 28 1977, in Riverside, California.  The time is given an AA rating by astrodatabank, which is as good as it gets.

Anyway, the question I want to ask, is whether Travis Alexander was doomed.  Of course it’s not fashionable to predict people’s deaths, and this is not something I do in my practice as an astrologer.  However the question of whether death is predictable is something that fascinates me, and I do believe, in Travis Alexander’s case, that there were grounds to believe, astrologically, that his life was in danger in 2008.

The key to understanding Travis Alexander’s death is his Moon in Capricorn in the Ninth House.  Although it is in Capricorn, the sign of it fall, it is arguably very strong – as the traditionalists would say, it is in its sect, in all three ways.  The Moon is a nocturnal planet and it is a nocturnal chart.  The Moon, as a nocturnal planet in a nocturnal chart, is above the horizon.  Finally, the Moon is in Capricorn, a nocturnal sign.

Furthermore, the Moon, being in the 9th House in a nocturnal chart, is the chart’s hyleg, or the giver of life.  So when the hyleg is afflicted, generally by primary direction, life is in danger.

Although I use primary directions, I am not one of those astrologers who believes that that they should be used to predict precisely-timed events.  Rather, they mark a zone, where particular events can happen.  So what I am going to do is look at primary directions affecting Travis Alexander’s Moon.  These directions can be either zodiacal or mundane, direct or converse.  For those obsessed about terminological accuracy, I use the direct/converse distinction in the modern sense of the words.

I’m afraid I can’t go into detail about the mechanics of primary directions, but essentially they focus on the rotation of the earth.  For example, if the Earth rotates 30 degrees, from birth, to put a planet on the horizon, one would expect a corresponding event  to happen at the age of about thirty.

When I first looked at Travis Alexander’s chart, without doing any calculating, I noticed Mars might have been making a converse opposition to his Moon at the time of his death – it was about 30 degrees mundane converse from the opposition.  I then did the calculations, using a degree of rotation for a year, and found the following:

17th February 2008: Mars opposition Moon, mundane converse
3rd July 2008: Moon opposition Sun, zodiacal converse
4th December 2008: Moon opposition Mars, mundane direct
28th March 2009: Sun opposition Moon, mundane direct

The first and fourth directions indicate that the Moon is being attacked by Mars and the Sun, at at time when the directed Moon is moving towards an opposition of Mars.  Four big oppositions, and as William Lilly wrote, oppositions signify ‘perfect hatred’.

So where is Jodi in all this?  Normally one takes the Moon as being the general significator of women, but in this case the Moon is simply Travis’ life force.  Mars, by contrast, is the aggressor, and it is ruler of Scorpio, the sign on the cusp of Travis’ Seventh House of relationships.  We can therefore conclude that Jodi is Mars.

OK, that’s fine, but what else?  What was the trigger?  One important trigger for primaries can be profections, which is the system by which you move the points in the chart one sign for every year of life.

On June 4 2008, the day of Travis’ death, his profected Mars was at 3 degrees Capricorn, which contrasts to his Moon at 5 degrees 24 minutes Capricorn.  The profection would have been exact a month later, but this applying orb is good enough.  Given the Moon-Mars primaries, the Moon-Mars profection was a dangerous trigger, and any astrologer working with primaries and profections would or should have picked up on this, and given the appropriate warnings.  Of course Travis was a Mormon, and he wasn’t into superstitious nonsense like astrology.

Who says Geminis don’t make good generals? German general Heinz Guderian, aka ‘Fast Heinz’, was born on June 17 1888. His armored breakthrough at Sedan in 1940 led to the fall of France.

Aries: At the beginning of the week Mars, your ruler, makes a favorable aspect to Uranus.  You’re able to make things happen, and through a dramatic approach you can make everyone sit up and listen.  By doing the last thing that anyone expects you create the possibility of real change.  Yet the week ends with the Summer solstice – or whatever you call it south of the Equator – and you might feel that it’s time to get back to your roots.  Where there’s talking there’s opportunity.

Taurus: Certain financial issues are moving to a rapid conclusion.  Perhaps, over the last year or so, you’e been re-thinking your financial options, and you now realize what’s required of you.  However be careful – just as you move out of the woods there’ll be a temptation to make one more financial mistake.  So avoid spending large sums of money, unless it’s a matter of life and death.  Elsewhere partners have unusual ideas – ideas which may not be as crazy as they sound.

Gemini: The Gemini month is drawing to a close!  A lot of things had been happening in your life, and you had chances to change direction, and put right past mistakes.  However there is always a danger of laziness, and if you assume that everything will sort itself out, of its own accord, you may be sadly mistaken.  Elsewhere friends and colleagues have a surprise for you, a surprise that could very much run in your favor.

Cancer: How do you have maximum impact?  This week it’s not about making a lot of noise.  It’s about doing what you do best, in a quiet, low-profile way.  You won’t be noticed, and you’ll be able to get on with the job, without being disturbed.  At the end of the week the Sun moves from Gemini to Cancer.  Your birthday month unfolds, and you can start expressing yourself in a big way.  And there’ll be no need to repeat yourself.

Leo: The Sun, your ruler, is making a conjunction to Jupiter.  It’s an aspect that happens approximately once a year, and overall it’s good news.  You’re going to be optimistic, and you’ll believe that just about anything is possible – particularly in terms of you social life.  Your friends are indeed blasting with energy, and if you follow  their lead you’re unlikely to be bored.  However all good things must come to an end, and as the week draws to a close you’ll start valuing your own company.

Virgo: At work there could be fun and games – after all, there’s a conjunction between the Sun and Jupiter, in the career sector of your solar chart.  You can project the full force of your personality, and your ideas are going to seem wonderful.  So don’t be modest – tell everyone about your plans, and don’t ask too many questions.  At the end of the week a new tide is moving your way, which could allow you to re-arrange the various patterns of your friendships.

Libra: The process of change is nearly over.  You realize that the world is complicated, and that the old ways have had their day.  In particular, you know that some of the answers you’re looking for can’t be found in the usual places.  Perhaps you’ll have to reach out, to the other side of the world!  Alternatively you might accept that the spiritual dimension can no longer be ignored, that you have to function on several plains of existence simultaneously.  But, but, but… you also need to keep both feet firmly on the ground.

Scorpio: The week kicks off with a favorable aspect between Mars and Uranus.  You’re in the mood for action, and you’re not satisfied with the status quo.  If you so wish you can upset the apple-cart, but are you able to pay the emotional price?  Nonetheless, if you handle your emotions in the right way you can create powerful effects.  At the end of the week something you do connected with a faraway country can prove, in time, to be a profitable direction.

Sagittarius: I don’t know.  You can benefit from other people, but only up to a point.  If you get too close to any one person, then problems might manifest, especially as the Sun is uncomfortably close to Jupiter, your ruling planet.  Maybe someone’s powerful personality will prevent you from thinking straight, and as a result you’ll make a mistake?  If you follow another person’s lead you could indeed be walking into a trap.  Romance could be less of a blessing, more of a curse, at least in the short term.

Capricorn: In the run up to the Solstice there’s work to be done.  It might be boring, but it’s nonetheless necessary.  For example, there are administrative tasks to be done, and perhaps also some promises that have to be honored.  Your attention to detail will be outstanding, and through careful moves you can gain other people’s support.  By the end of the week the Sun is in Cancer, your opposite sign.  You can turn your attention to relationships, of all kinds.  With partnership comes opportunity.

Aquarius: You’ve got something to contribute and you mustn’t be afraid of making a fool of yourself.   By showing the world the real you, you’ll attract both criticism and support.  However one supporter is worth a dozen critics!  In terms of relationships, partners want to make their presence felt.  You might regard their approach as being unreasonable, but if you follow the situation through everyone can have a good time, you included.

Pisces: Try not to spend too much time at home.  This is because Jupiter, your ruling planet, is conjunct the Sun.  When you’re at home, or surrounded by your family, you might feel hemmed in, and unable to express yourself.  It’s better that you give yourself some space, and that you’re able to make your own decisions.   At the end of the week it’s the Solstice.  It’s time for Pisceans to have fun, and to tune into their fundamental creativity.

I just read about a New York couple who committed suicide. They put bags over their heads, and filled up the bags with helium.

The couple, John Littig and Lynne Rosen, were self-help gurus in their late forties. They provided life-coaching, and had a radio show, called ‘The Pursuit of Happiness, though I don’t know precisely how successful they were.

As I understand it, Lynne Rosen, a qualified social worker, had psychological problems, that she couldn’t come to terms with. As a result, the couple killed themselves.

I’m sure the situation was more complicated than that. However it does raise a few issues.

I don’t want to moralize about suicide. It’s all very well saying that the great religions, including Islam, have taboos against suicide, the view being that God gave us life, and it’s not for us to take it away. However some people, in physical, emotional or psychological agony, might feel that suicide is the best choice. In some respects that’s there decision, and they must weigh their situation with their spiritual outlook.

However if you are setting yourself up as a therapist, or a healer or a lifestyle guru, you have to accept the whole package. You are claiming that you know the answers better than other people, and psychological illness should be no reason to commit suicide. John Littig, the apparently healthy half of the couple, should have been able to use his life skills to stabilize the situation, rather than give everything up in a cloud of helium.

There is also the question of example. When you commit suicide your action will be observed, maybe many years afterwards. If you commit suicide, and your situation doesn’t appear desperate, you’re leaving a message to the world that suicide is acceptable. It’s a message that could be picked up immediately, by everyone who reads about the story on the internet, or it’s a message that could manifest decades later. For example, when Ernest Hemingway was 29, on December 6 1928, his father shot himself. Over thirty years later, in 1961, Ernest Hemingway also shot himself. In 1963 American poet Sylvia Plath gassed herself. In 2009 her son Nicholas Hughes hanged himself. Of course we might be dealing with mental illness, but the suicide of a parent, or even of someone you respect, may lead people to the conclusion that suicide is an OK way to deal with life’s problems.

Aside from suicide issues, the case of John Littig and Lynne Rosen raises questions about the therapy and self-help industry. Do the healers really know that they are talking about? And why do people become therapists? Unfortunately a lot of people get involved with counselling and therapy because they themselves have got psychological problems. Bizarre as it might sound, they feel that the best way of healing themselves is to heal other people. Which reminds me of what Jesus said, in Matthew 7:5: ‘Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.’

Talking about quotes, I went to Littig and Rosen’s website, which at the time of writing is still up, at http://www.wnnlifecoaching.com/. The home page of the website has a quotation from Mark Twain: “The secret to getting ahead is getting started”. Guess what? Mark Twain never said this.  It’s a quotation that has variously been linked to Agatha Christie and Sally Berger, but has nothing to do with the great writer.  That’s another think about the I’m-OK-you’re-OK social network therapy industry.  Quotations from Mark Twain and Albert Einstein abound, with fraudsters, chancers and wannabe gurus hanging onto the coat-tails of towering intellectuals who would turn in their graves if they knew what shades of mediocrity were bastardizing their life-work.

Edward Snowden is in the news. He is a 29 year old American, who worked for the CIA. He has leaked information about a US government spying operation, and it seems that he is now in Hong Kong, with the possibility that he might be extradited back home, to face criminal charges.

He is widely regarded as being a hero, and this is something that should be reflected in his horoscope.

As far as his birth details are concerned, he was apparently born on June 21 1983, in North Carolina. This means that without a time of birth we don’t know what his Sun sign is.

On this date, at 7.09 pm local time in North Carolina, the Summer Solstice took place, when the Sun moved from Gemini to Cancer. So if he was born at 7.09 pm or afterwards, he would be a Cancerian, any time before he would be a Gemini. Assuming an equal distribution of births throughout the day, we can therefore say, with eighty percent certainty, that he is a Gemini.

Actually, he’s a major Gemini regardless of where his Sun is, because he definitely has Mars, Mercury and the North Node in this sign. So adding to what we already know of him, he is someone who is versatile and resourceful, who is very good at adapting his brain to his environment. He also thrives on variety – after a short time in the military, he had jobs as a security guard, a computer operator and a security expert.

However unlike many Geminis, he has a strong sense of principle, and he really values his own and other people’s privacy. The reason for this is clear – he has the Moon in Scorpio. Traditionally the Moon in this sign is very secretive, and doesn’t like revealing its true feelings. It certainly doesn’t like being pushed around. It’s also worth noting that he has a conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus, in Sagittarius. It’s a conjunction that a lot of people born in 1983 have, but he seems to have picked up on its energy – which is about the importance of freedom, and perhaps the necessity of taking dramatic action to break free from other people’s shackles.

Another thing worth noting about his horoscope is that he has Mars conjunct the North Node, in Gemini.  The North Node is the way forward, the path we are supposed to be taking.  Mars is the planet of war and the planet of anger, and at its highest level, it fights for justice.  So by doing what he is doing, and taking on the might of the US government, he is arguably living out his destiny – even if the cost turns out to be enormous.

Yet I’m wondering to what extent Edward Snowden has thought through his recent actions.  Yes, he feels that the US Government has gone too far, and that it was up to him to take a stand.  But the Sun-Mars-Node conjunction in Gemini is opposition Neptune in Sagittarius.  Neptune can be a confusing influence, and it can encourage us to make the wrong decisions.  It often acts in a secretive way, that can be useful if we want to leak information.  I nonetheless feel that Snowden didn’t plan things properly, even though right now he’s a hero.

Further evidence for this is shown by his Vedic horoscope.   Here he has a conjunction between the the Moon and Saturn in Libra, and right now, in the Eastern Zodiac, Saturn is transiting Libra.  This means that he is not just experiencing his Saturn Return, when Saturn returns to the place it was at birth, but he is also having to deal with Sadhesati.

Sadhesati is when Saturn is in the sign of the natal Moon, or in the sign either side of the Moon.  It can be a dangerous time, that can be characterized by huge losses.  In my opinion Snowden has chosen a bad time to make his move, at least from his own selfish point of view. However he’s not an ordinary person, he’s a hero, and heroism isn’t for the squeamish.

Aries: Some things don’t have to be said. You can keep them to yourself, and in your own way work out their significance. If you were to be open about your opinions, the consequences could be very unfortunate. At the end of the week your sense of humor moves in a nasty direction, and in your particular part of the world, deaths and funerals might raise a few laughs.

Taurus: Venus, your ruler, makes a stressful aspect to Uranus. There’s a nervous tension in the air, and it might feel that at any moment things could explode.  So tread carefully, and don’t do anything too stupid.  At the end of the week there might be some unexpected complications, caused by other people’s inappropriate behavior.  Also, just because someone acts the tough guy, doesn’t necessarily mean that they can carry out their promises.

Gemini: You feel pretty sure that it’s happened.  I mean, the big event, which would move you from one place to another place, which would demonstrate that your luck really has changed.  However if you try too hard to analyze the situation, you may feel that you’re getting nowhere.  So perhaps you should relax, and tell yourself that things really are getting better.  Many Geminis may see concrete evidence that their financial situation is improving.

Cancer: A good week, provided you handle the prevailing planetary energies in the right way.  You’re certainly going to be dynamic, thanks to a powerful aspect between Venus and Uranus, which hits the main angles of your solar chart.  However you can’t expect the normal methods to work – you must be ready to spring a surprise, and if people complain, that’s their problem, not yours.

Leo: You’ve got to be honest, particularly when it comes to money.  Look at your bank account details, even if it pains you.  By taking a realistic approach, you’ll be able to make the necessary changes.  At the same time, don’t take what your friends are doing at face value, and don’t agree with them just because it’s the easy option.  It’s a time when you need to think for yourself, because in the final analysis you’re the only person you can rely on – but hey, that applies to all of us!

Virgo: You’re starting to realize what’s important, and what’s merely a waste of time.  You can therefore run your life much more efficiently, with particular reference to your career.  However don’t feel that you have to go it alone.  There are people out there who can be very useful, if you’re able to trust them.  But it’s important to exercise the right management skills – different individuals require different approachs.

Libra: Venus, your ruling planet, makes a powerful, 90-degree aspect to Uranus.  It’s difficult to relax.  There are lots of things going on, that don’t always make much sense, and you’re very keen to be part of them.  However your first impulse may not be the correct impulse.  You have to think carefully about what’s appropriate, and under no circumstances must you jump to conclusions.

Scorpio: Few things in life are simple, as every Scorpio knows.  You have to deal with other people and their problems, and also deal with the raw power of your own emotions.  However if you’re ready for anything, and you don’t make assumptions, you’ll soon enough get to grips with the situation.  At the end of the week you’re tempted to get nasty, perhaps because someone has been provoking you.  But is that really sensible?

Sagittarius: Independence is important, as every Sagittarian knows.  But sometimes you have to consider other people’s needs, even if it’s through gritted teeth.  Yet when you and someone else are on the same wavelength, things can really start happening, and I suppose it’s all about mutual respect.  The noisiest person on the block should probably be ignored.

Capricorn: At work you continue to be responsible, and you want to do the right thing.  However you don’t have as much control as you think you have, and in many cases it’s other people who are pulling the levers.  Yet it’s only a temporary situation, and soon enough things will return to normal.  Elsewhere, relationships take an interesting turn.  Just because something is undesirable doesn’t mean it’s unplanned.

Aquarius: What’s going to happen next?  You’d love to know, but really, the answers aren’t available – and the more you guess, the more confused you’ll become.   As the week progresses many Aquarians will feel a need to assert themselves, perhaps in an over the top and rather exaggerated way.    But is such action really necessary?  Probably not.

Pisces: You can feel something rushing past, all the time.  You maybe feel that you’re being left behind, and that time itself is following the line of least resistance.  However there is no need to panic.  You’re fine just as you are, and those that are in a hurry are the ones who are most likely to become unstuck.  When you’re good and ready, in a couple of weeks time, you can make your move.

Vedic horoscope of Recep Erdogan.

I’ve only just noticed what’s going on in Turkey.  There are riots in several locations, in particular in Istanbul.  The cause of the Istanbul riots is the government’s plan to demolish a popular park in the city, and to turn it into a  shopping center with a mosque added.  

Yet the riots are not just about government vandalism.  They are about the direction that the government is going, under the leadership of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.  He is turning into something of a strong-man, both at home and abroad.  His party, the Justice and Development Party, espouses Islamic values, and seems to court the Islamic vote.  There have been restrictions on the sale of alcohol, and the government has been hostile to women’s reproductive rights.  Abroad there has been an activist foreign policy, most prominently with regards to Syria, but there is a suggestion that Turkey wants to re-establish its influence in the areas of the Middle East and Africa that used to be part of its Empire, prior to 1918.

So, what does astrology tell us about Recep Tayyip Erdogan?  He was born on February 26 1954, which makes him a Pisces.  Politicians with the Sun in Pisces have an intuitive understanding of public opinion, and they know which people need to be brought onto their side. They’re also flexible, showing different sides of themselves to different constituencies.  So Erdogan can be pro-Western and pro-business, and can also keep the Islamic vote happy.

Matters are helped by the fact that Erdogan has a close conjunction between Mercury and Venus.  It’s a conjunction that makes him charming and charismatic, whether he’s talking to Barack Obama or some local Islamic leader.  Yet successful Pisceans have their own agenda, and a great white shark is every inch a fish.

I don’t have a time of birth for Erdogan, so I set up his Vedic horoscope, using ‘chandra lagna’ – in other words, making the Moon sign his first house.

What we notice straight away is that there’s a conjunction between the Moon and Mars, which in the Vedic horoscope takes place in Scorpio.  Mars is very strong in Scorpio, being the sign ruler, and he’s likely to overcome his many and various opponents – especially as Mars rules the Sixth House, which in Indian astrology rules one’s enemies.

Incidentally, in his younger years, Erdogan was a good footballer, and this is perhaps a reflection of his strong Mars.

The Moon in Scorpio is deceptive.  It would be so easy to say that his Moon was a disaster zone, not just because it’s in Scorpio, the sign of its Fall, but also because it’s conjunct Mars.

However Indian astrology has got surprises up its sleeve, and I’m thinking of a particular condition, known as ‘nicha-bhanga raja yoga’.

The world ‘yoga’ literally means ‘union’, and in astrology it represents a particular condition, that has been highlighted by the ancient masters.  A ‘raja yoga’, by the way, means a ‘kingly union’, and can be of major significance.

So let me explain the logic of the nicha-bhanga raja yoga, involving the Moon.  Erdogan’s Moon is in Scorpio, the worst sign for it to be in.  The planet ruling Scorpio is Mars, and  Mars is in the same sign as the Moon.  This means that the negative impact of the Moon being in Scorpio is erased by the fact that its ruler occupies the same sign.  Not only that, but a curse has actually become a blessing, in a real yin-yang kind of way – you move too far in one direction, and  you end up going to the extremes of the other direction.

Barack Obama also has nicha-bhanga raja yoga.  His Jupiter is in Capricorn in the Eastern zodiac, the sign of its Fall, but it’s conjunct Saturn, which is ruler of Capricorn.  In 2008 he stood for the US presidency, while in the major period of Jupiter, and I believe that it was largely because of this yoga that he got elected.

I don’t know what planetary period Erdogan is currently going through, because I don’t have his time of birth.  However like Obama, it seems probable that the nicha-bhanga raja yoga is having a decisive impact.  It’s as if the desire for power is so strong that it can’t be broken.

We can perhaps be more specific.  In Erdogan’s chandra lagna the Moon rules the Ninth House, and the Ninth House is connected with religion and morality.  One can see how he is utilizing it to shore up his power-base.

Erdogan is further strengthened by his Saturn, which in the Eastern zodiac is in Libra, the sign of its exaltation.  Saturn is in the Twelfth House from the Moon, and maybe  this reflects that fact that in the late 1990s Erdogan spent a bit of time in prison.  Nonetheless, a person with a strong Mars and a strong Saturn is a tough person to beat, and they are ideally suited for a political career.

As for what’s going to happen next, I’m hampered by the fact that I haven’t got a birth time for Erdogan.  However I would like to focus on the transit of Saturn.

At the moment, Saturn is returning to the place it was was when he was born – this happens at the age of around 29, and then at the age of 58.  In itself it’s not a big deal, but we have to remember that his Moon is in Scorpio, the sign following on from Saturn.

In Indian astrology the period when Saturn transits the sign preceding the Moon, the sign of the Moon and the sign following the Moon is know as ‘sadhesati’.  It is considered unfortunate, though both Margaret Thatcher and Adolf Hitler came to power during their sadhesati periods.

As far as Erdogan is concerned, he is already in power.  This might then mean that sadhesati represents a shock, where he loses much of his gains – especially as Mars is in the same sign as the Moon.

Technically his sadhesati period lasts, on and off, from 2011 to 2020, but it is at peak strength when Saturn occupies the sign Scorpio, from the end of 2014 through to the end of 2017.  So maybe Erdogan’s magic is slowly starting to wear off, and it might be time for him to quit while he’s ahead.

June 3 1926 – Gemini poet Allen Ginsberg was born.  His most famous work was ‘The Howl’:

Taurus: On Saturday there are things to finish up, perhaps relating to your friends and associates.  It may or may not be pleasant, but it’s got to be done.  On Sunday don’t feel that you have to do anything.  Just be yourself, and allow things to develop.  Yet when you’re alone, doing nothing in particular, you might get a sudden inspiration for making money.

Aries: Mars, your ruler, moves from Taurus to Gemini. Overall this is good news. Mars isn’t very happy in Taurus, and in Gemini it’s more positive and more outward-going. However be careful if you’re an Aries driver – you could be tempted to go too fast or to disregard the laws of the road. As always, texting while driving is a no-no!
