Greg Lebon Shows LA Times Man What It Takes to be One of the Best Sand Sculptors in the Country

Greg Lebon, one of the best sand sculptors in the country, was featured by Chris Erkine of LA Times. In his article "Man About Time: The Sand Sorcerer's Apprentice," Chris said that "what Michaelangelo is to marble, Lebon is to sand" and described him as one of the best in the business.

As Greg and Chris work on their sand creation, Greg illustrated his talent using a few of his well-worn sand sculpture tools to create something out damp sand. He has been into sand sculpting for thirty years, won in many competitions, and traveled to different parts of the world because of his sand sculpting skills.

Greg, a founding member of Archisand, has given numerous contributions and honor to the sand sculpting community. For the last seven out of ten years, Archisand has taken won first place in the Masters Ten-Man Division in the U.S. Open Sand Sculpture event held yearly at Imperial Beach, California. Aside from winning sand sculpting competitions, Greg and his team of sand sculpting artists have traveled to Japan, Canada, Mexico, and many places in the U.S. because of sand sculpture.

Aside from all his sand sculpting work and competitions, Greg does volunteer work for church and other agencies. As Erkine said, Greg is talented, nice, and patient. Greg may be one of the busiest sand sculpture artists, but he also practices architecture in the State of California. You can see how his architectural skills complement his sand sculpting.

Archisand will be competing against their arch rival again at the new United States Sand Sculpting Challenge event at the B St Pier in San Diego.

Friday August 31st to Monday September 3rd.

Archisand and IB Posse have competed against each other for many years at the US Open Sand Castle Competition in Imperial Beach, CA, in fact they have taken 9 out of the last 10 first place awards there. The US Open at Imperial Beach has been canceled for this year. So this will the be the event to come see in it's place. 10 Masters sculptors from all over the world will be competing in a head to head masters solo event. These guys are amazing!

A must see!

The B St Pier is convenient to most of San Diego and is located next the the Midway Aircraft Carrier exhibit. Come see the tall ships all weekend from the pier as the masters work hard on their sculptures. Other 3D art will also be on display during the event.

LA Kings Fans Loved The Win & Our Logo & Players Custom Sand Sculpture!

Last night Dwight King scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, Jonathan Quick made 18 saves, and the Los Angeles Kings rolled to the brink of their first Stanley Cup final in 19 years with a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

AND...

7 Archisand sand sculptors took 2 days and turned 25 tons of sand into a 12' tall sand sculpture of the LA Kings logo, jerseys, numbers, and even goalie, Jonathan Quick!

Fans celebrated around the final sculpture after the finishing touches went on last night at the first home game for the Kings this series.

LA Kings Logo & Players Custom Sand Sculpture at LA Live May 12th & 13th

Archisand Professional Sand Sculptors will be building a 25 ton sand sculpture at LA Live near the Staples Center this weekend.

Starting Saturday morning, May 12th, the Los Angeles Kings hockey team including logo, carvings of player's jerseys with names and numbers around the Stanley Cup. We will also carve goalie, Jonathan Quick... in sand!

He has played so well so far in the playoffs. We're excited to be a part of this.

We do Sand and You Can Too - How to Build a Sand Sculpture

If you watch Archisand's Youtube videos, you'll see that people love to talk with us about sand sculpting! One of the questions we often get is,

"How do you do that?"

So today we're gonna talk about the basics of how to build a sandcastle or any other form of sand sculpture. Whether a beginner, intermediate or professional sand sculptor, here are some things that we all do.

1. Like an architect or art sculptor, making a sandcastle design is usually the first thing you'd want to do before touching the sand. A design serves as your reference point especially when building large sand sculptures that require careful scaling. You can check out Archisand's designs here as a jump-off point for your ideas.

2. Choose location very carefully. The layout of a beach, the type of sand, wind direction, tide schedules, etc. can all affect how long your sand sculpture can last.

3. The first step in actually building your sand sculpture is compacting or pounding sand. You can do "softpack" or just make a mound of moist sand from packing and patting; "handstacking" is using your hands to pile up sand, letting the water go down so that it hardens your base foundation, and; using a professional tool like a landscape hand held compactor.

4. Work from the top of your compact sand, then downwards. Start getting into detail after the general outline of the sand sculpture is done. The right tools can really make a difference in the result of your handiwork. Aside from hands, you can use a sand sculpting kit with buckets, shovels, masons trawls, palette knives and a hand-held spray bottle.

Quick and Easy Ways to Introduce Sand Sculpting for Kids

You know that when you put a child and a sandy beach together, sand play is inevitable! That's how the idea for sandboxes in the playground came about after all. For children, the many possibilities of sand sculpting is a natural way to release their immense creativity. Parents can form bonding experiences with their kids. And in the end, everyone has loads of fun!

If you want to introduce sand sculpting as family activity this summer, turn the process into a game. Here are some ideas on how to do it:

Brainstorm with your kids

Involve them from step 1 by explaining that every great task begins with a plan. Bring them to the drawing board and ask them for ideas on what to sand sculpt! Let them unleash their creativity no matter how farfetched or impossible to do as an acitvity. The important thing is that they are excited to share ideas with you. On the other hand, they can surprise you with a simple, yet beautiful idea to sketch.

If you have a big family gathering, you can divide those participating into sand teams, with a team leader to facilitate the activities. You can even watch Archisand's Youtube videos for ideas or check out the design gallery!

Focus the energy

Now that you have them pumped up, it's time to channel that energy into a specific objective. So start narrowing down the choices into ideas that you actually can do. Then put the sandcastle design on paper. Beginners should focus on simple ones which require easy techniques to accomplish, while those with more experience in sandcastle construction can do something comparative with their skills.

Have a sand party

With your design done, it's time to get down to the beach and do your sand sculptures! Remember,

Unless you're using a sandbox, sand is normally attached to a body of water. That means you need to check the high and low tides so you can build your sand sculptures above the water mark and it won't be swept away.
Try to use fine grain sand, as it holds water better and allows you to sculpt more detail into the packed sand.
Prepare yourselves with a sand sculpting kit. There's nothing wrong with using toy pails and shovels with the kids. On the other hand, if you want your kids know what it feels like to be real sand sculpture artists, as well as producing much better results, use a kit with professional sand sculpting tools like palette knives, shovels, buckets, hand-held spray bottle and masons trawls.
Spray down your sand sculptures with a hand held spray bottle full of fresh water so it lasts longer.
This is a sand party so it's fun, fun, fun! Have cameras clicking and videos rolling to capture those treasured moments.
