UR Architects were awarded first prize for their design of a sports center in Antwerp. The center, which is intended for non-competition sports, is aligned with the existing sports hall along the main street of the new master plan development. The building attempts “to communicate” on all sides as the sports hall, dance hall and rental depot are positioned on the edge, interconnected by a T-shaped service area. This extroverted model opens the building to the community and the architecture reflects the modernism of the surrounding buildings. The roof is designed as a fifth facade to relate to the nearby housing blocks of Renaat Braem while the facades of the halls are made of multi-layered polycarbonate. Partly translucent, partly transparent, this material combines the dynamic spectacle of changing light and shade, with diffuse daylight admission and a high insulation value, resulting in a low energy building.

The AntiDiva display at the recent Salone Internazionale del Mobile featured the "Cut Sofa & Chair" that was created by Italian designer Domenico de Palo. This example of contemporary furniture design cuts substance down to a minimum. The minimal impact of the sofa and chair is overpowering when you consider that despite its minimal appearance, it can easily accommodate multiple guests for seating.

Orb design to honour Ban Ki-Moon
The project of the UN Peace Park was initiated by the City of Chungju in honour of the current General Secretary of the United Nations Organization and native of Chungju, Ban Ki-Moon. The project will be the new cultural landmark for the city, spreading out along the banks of the river Namhangang and to the north of the Natural Park Tangeumdae. This cultural aspiration culminates in the design of the new UN Memorial Hall, creating a new landmark building for Chungju.

As one of five international architecture firms invited by Kohinoor CTNL Infrastructure Co. Ltd. to participate in a design competition to create a mixed-use urban development in Mumbai, India, Perkins Eastman submitted two bold approaches-one, a singular 33-story, 1.16M sf (108,000 sm) high-rise tower and two-story retail base; the other, a low- and mid-rise, 750,000 sf (69,700 sm) two building scheme. Each is a visionary catalyst for smart, green urban development that establishes an iconic sense of place amid juxtapositions of traditional and modern India.

As we shared earlier this week, the Desiging in Teheran international competition urged designers to creatively rethink the potential a retail area can have upon an evolving metropolis (Grzegorz Witold Woronowicz’s won as we reported earlier on AD). Giuseppe Iodice’s proposal placed third as it aimed to create an architecture that ”would investigate a social, political, cultural function and become an element of dialogue between different cultures…thus assuming a role of balanced mediation between western and eastern culture without renouncing its expressive identity.”
