[hal-05801991] The Prosody of Clinical Speech: Annotation and Computational Analysis of Psychiatric Interviews

We present an exploratory analysis of silence and filled pause annotation in 39 semi-structured French-language clinical interviews between psychiatrists and patients assessed for psychosis risk, drawn from the APAISE+ corpus. Participants were classified into three groups: at clinical high risk (AR), not at risk (NAR), and first-episode psychosis (FEP). We developed a manual annotation protocol using Praat TextGrid files, parsed 58,243 annotated intervals, and applied statistical methods to study silence distributions, stationarity, within-interview dynamics, and clinical group differences. Silence accounts for 15.5% of patient speaking time (median 1.01 s). Silence duration differs significantly across three clinical groups (AR, NAR, FEP; Kruskal-Wallis H = 289.9, p < 0.001), while filled pause rate does not (H = 0.59, p = 0.75). First-episode psychosis patients produce proportionally longer silences (>2 s) than at-risk patients, though the not-at-risk group also exhibits extended silence durations, complicating a straightforward clinical interpretation. These findings are invisible to automatic speech recognition, which suppresses over 90% of filled pauses and cannot represent silence, underscoring the irreplaceable role of manual annotation in clinical NLP.

The description of the battle for the defence of the city of Candia against the assault of the Ottoman troops in 1699, also known as the “Last Crusade”, covers some exciting pages in Dimitrie Cantemir’s History of the Ottoman Empire. Based on the testimony of an eyewitness to the event who was in his close entourage (Maxud), as well as other information, the author sketches a dramatic picture, which is also important as a source hitherto unexplored in the studies of this event. The interest of this description is heightened by the fact that it reflects the Ottoman view, less present in other writings, compared to the rich literature inspired by the participants from the opposing Christian side. Thanks to the success of the History of the Ottoman Empire, this aspect has not gone unnoticed by prestigious authors such as Voltaire or Mably, who have taken up the accounts that Cantemir saved from oblivion. Although questionable in terms of veracity, these testimonies still deserve the attention of present-day specialists either for some information that is difficult to dispute, or at least as unmissable references in the historiography of the subject.

[hal-05791632] Relinquishing a turn: Verbal displays of recipiency as a resource for overlap resolution in conversational turn-taking

This study documents a method participants in interaction have for resolving a temporary problem of mis-coordination in turn-taking. The problem arises when two people have begun talking at the same time, and both drop out in order to let the other speak. At that point, it may be unclear who is entitled and expected to speak, so that they risk both starting up again at the same time, only to find themselves in overlap again. The practice for resolving this problem is that a speaker relinquishes the turn, showing that they unambiguously give up their turn-space claim definitively. In French talk-in-interaction, this is done with a particle 'oui/ouais'. The analysis contrasts this practice with other displays of recipiency, including continuers, and participants are shown to differentiate them through sequential placement and phonetic design.

[hal-05777008] Towards a clinical adaptation of the Whisper model for French

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) applied to psychiatric interviews can support clinical assessment and facilitate the analysis of therapist-patient interactions. However, generalpurpose ASR systems often struggle with the linguistic and acoustic specificities of psychiatric consultations. In this study, we fine-tune OpenAI's Whisper model on approximately 48 hours of real-world French psychiatric consultations. The adapted model achieves a substantial improvement in transcription accuracy, reducing the word error rate from 26.9% to 13.7% after text normalization (a 13-point absolute reduction, or 49% relative) in comparison to the baseline model. We further analyze the remaining transcription errors after fine-tuning, highlighting persistent issues inherent to the Whisper model. Our findings demonstrate the effectiveness of domain adaptation for clinical ASR and provide insights into the potential applications and current limitations of deploying such models in mental health services.

Given that the researcher positions were extremely scarce, the mere criterion of an excellent and illustrious recommendation was no longer highly significant. Despite this aspect, the historian Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie played his role with obstinacy. Another merit is to have remained loyal to himself, providing his letters of recommendation with an original style recognisable across his works. The systematic refusal of administrative language platitude is the most striking feature. His reply to a request made by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia for a file concerning the research project of a candidate illustrates it effectively : “I am not a good bureaucrat, but a teacher and historian ; instead of filling out your paper accurately but bureaucratically, I’d rather simply tell you what I think”. A glimpse of humour or sensitivity outlined by his pen conferred upon his letters the human profusion, thus making the gesture noble. The many pages penned by ELRL concerning the other historians are also, from this perspective, a mirror of his personality, interested in the challenges faced by his more or less young peers. In addition, they clarify the network of friendships in the scientific world as the star of ELRL reached its peak.

Like many other aspects of the society, Romanian cultural life underwent radical changes during the first years of the communist regime. Apart from the new course imprinted by ideological pressure, it has become impoverished, forced to ignore its national traditions and it cut its ties with a large part of the intellectual world. The way in which, step by step, the cultural landscape freed itself from a double isolation constitutes a process worthy of interest for cultural history. In this sense, the events around the celebration of Ovid in 1957 represent lessons for the rediscovery of a symbol of the cultural past and of universal culture under the sign of the classical heritage. But it is also representative of another reality: at a time when traditional Franco-Romanian relations are seriously affected by the radical deterioration of diplomatic dialogue between the two countries, this event offers the opportunity for a new meeting between their intellectuals. Some unpublished sources existing in the National Archives of France corroborated with the reading of part of the Romanian press of the time allow us to reconstruct the importance of this episode.

[hal-05776933] Istoria ca o poveste: Istoria Imperiului Otoman de Cantemir

A part of European culture since the 18th century, the “History of the Ottoman Empire” of Dimitrie Cantemir calls for a new reading, especially since the erudite historian Virgil Cândea discovered its original manuscript, which scholars have long sought. Beyond the historiographical value of the work as documentation and critical wit, its clear and flowing “story-like” writing illustrates the indissoluble link between history and storytelling mentioned by Paul Ricœur. It is easier to understand why, thanks to this condition, it did not pose too complicated problems of translation, easing the effort of translators and offering itself to 18th-century (and later) readers as an instructive and enjoyable read. The criticism came especially from the angle of scholarship with the development of the critical spirit in historiography in the 19th century and the formation of new generations of scholars specializing in Ottoman studies. However, while Cantemir’s history of the Ottomans has given way to other later works as documentation and analysis, it retains the same interest as a narrative discourse, the mark of time contributing no less to its fascination.

Mircea Eliade’s unsuccessful attempt to obtain a grant from the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) in 1947 is known only through his autobiographical writings. Two new archival collections make it possible to review the course of events : the private archives of Alphonse Dupront, former director of the French Institute in Romania, and the archives of the CNRS, kept at the Archives nationales de France, which have recently been opened for consultation to researchers who are interested in this period. If, for the most part, these archives confirm the reasons for the deep bitterness felt by Mircea Eliade at the time of his failure, they also offer a more detailed picture of the machinery that was set into motion in this context, and contribute to a better appreciation of the role of other people who gave him undeniable support, in particular Alphonse Dupront, who was unjustly forgotten by the memoirist.

[hal-05776719] Alphonse Dupront în România: 1932-1940/41

The activity carried out by Alphonse Dupront in Romania between 1932 and 1940 represents a significant page of his life and the cultural history through the intellectual relations between France and Romania. Before delving into historical work with all his pen craftsmanship, he had played a role in history-making pursuant to his professional commitment to serve his country’s relations and cultural representation. Assuming his mission diligently, he had served more than France’s prestige in the world, particularly in Romania, and more than the development of the relations between the two countries : his activity also contributed to the cultivation of the European cultural ideal from the end of the interwar period, when it was more threatened than ever. Pierre Chaunu highlighted the significance of the years spent in Romania, which allowed him to discover a whole new manner of being European and understanding Europe from the perspective of the East ignored by the westerners. Hence, the Romanian experience had long-standing effects on the subsequent career of the historian attracted by his university duties, first in Montpellier between 1940 and 1956, then at Paris IV University (he became its chairman in 1969). Of course, despite his deep insight into the Romanian world, Dupront never claimed to have been a specialist like Paul Henry – his predecessor as the head of the French Cultural Institute, the author of a fundamental monograph about the Bukovina churches. This is the reason why he declined the invitation addressed by Demostene Botez to write a paper about Eminescu in the journal “Viața Românească” for a homage issue of 1963, “[...] I believe in what I write. The more extensive the topic, the more respect it demands” – having read and known the great poet’s work during his stay was not enough for him to comment upon it. Dupront proved to be one of the great historians of his country when he defended his thesis on the “myth of the Crusade” in 1956, and continued to be a friend of Romanians and helped to make their history known.
