The latest additions to Drummonds’ bathroom lighting collection take their signature classic luxe to new heights.

As with all Drummonds’ brassware, every piece is entirely handmade, with the brass cast in the traditional lost wax process and the glass handblown. The brass is then finished to order, with nine options ranging from unlacquered brass to polished nickel and antique bronze.

A run-down Victorian villa in Oxfordshire was demolished to make way for a brand-new house.  It retained the generous proportions of the original building, but with much larger areas of glass and a purpose-designed footprint, it is the perfect modern home for a couple and their three teenage children.

The clients came to Martin Moore through a friend’s recommendation and the kitchen design started while the house was still in the planning phase. This enabled the designer, Alex Hughes of Martin Moore’s Amersham showroom, to work with the architects and builders right from the beginning, aligning all the services and amenities.  The overall concept was definitely to ‘think big’.  Everything in this kitchen is on a grand scale and the design grew outwards from the central focus of one of the largest islands which Martin Moore have ever made.



Another must-have was the Aga.  Moving to the new house meant leaving a much-loved Aga behind, but there was the cheering prospect of a brand new one at the heart of the new kitchen. Situated just opposite the Aga, the sizeable central island is the multi-purpose heart of the room; as much a social hub for the family as a prepping area and laying out space.  A steam oven faces the Aga, creating a cooking zone, and a prep sink makes a practical addition to the island’s functionality, as does a deep fridge drawer facing the main sink.

The clients’ original brief actually called for two islands; the second being for a teenage daughter who loves to bake and needed a working zone of her own.  A second fixed island proved impractical in the final design, but was cleverly replaced by a Martin Moore Cook’s Table.  A large freestanding dresser adjacent to both the cooking zone and dining area holds the majority of the everyday china, glass and cutlery.



Although this is such a large kitchen, its ergonomics and functionality have been very carefully planned.  Because every Martin Moore kitchen is entirely designed and handbuilt as a one-off, every element of the space and the clients’ needs can be given due recognition.  Alex visited the clients in their old house and together they measured the existing shelving and drawer capacity, plus contents, and estimated exactly how much space the new kitchen should provide and how it would be organised.  They also discussed how the clients liked to shop (often, for fresh food) and cook and tailored the larder, fridge and freezer space accordingly.

Clever, purpose-designed, storage abounds, including deep drawers on either side of the Aga, which conceal internal drawers with special dividers for a knife block and utensils.  More vertical dividers under the prep sink provide dedicated storage for chopping boards and Aga trays. 



The clients had already chosen the fabrics for their blinds and upholstery, so the kitchen was handpainted in complementary colours, taking a palette of warm neutrals through the whole space from the working zones into the family dining and sitting room areas beyond. This unity creates a calm atmosphere with the colours changing subtly in response to the natural daylight which floods the room.



The kitchen also has a spacious walk-in pantry with traditional cool-shelves in Carrara marble. The long open shelves above the worktop provide storage for oils, preserves and dry ingredients, whilst the shelves below hold big bowls, party platters and large pieces of cookware. Wicker baskets under the sink provide root vegetable storage.

Daisy is a charming floral, originally inspired by the rice grains used to decorate Chinese tableware. Patterns made by the grains gradually evolved into this delicate petal design, printed in white onto seven different pastel backgrounds.

A classic stonemasonry technique, bookmatched marble has become a key trend in today’s interiors.  Using natural marble slabs to create geometric feature floors and walls is the height of luxury for kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms.

Now marble experts Lapicida have launched a far simpler, less expensive way to get the look.  Their amazing new ‘Bluetta’ porcelain offers a really authentic alternative to bookmatched marble, making it a great choice where budgets are limited or marble slabs would be too thick or heavy.  It is suitable for interior and exterior walls.

Urbane Wall Mounted Basin Set in Charcoal Finish

Designed by Vanessa Van Reyk, this en-suite master bathroom occupies a light-flooded corner of what appears to be a Georgian mansion but is in fact a new-build.  From the panelling to the flooring, every detail has been carefully observed, to create a space looking, as the designer says, “like a striking alteration rather than a completely new design”.

On the same basis, she sourced all the grand bathroomware from Drummonds, citing its designs as “classic, simple, elegant and timeless”.  With the WC and shower tucked discreetly out of sight, the centrepiece of the room is the imposing ‘Wye’ cast iron bath with its polished metal exterior.  This silver metal theme is echoed in the tall towel radiator and the brassware, from the taps and showerhead to the legs of the magnificent Lowther double vanity basin.  Arabescato marble and handblown glass light fittings form yet more visual bridges between period and contemporary style.



Drummonds design and manufacture their own bathroomware using traditional techniques and materials, from cast iron to china clay and solid brass.  Refined and authentic, their pieces lend presence to both period and modern settings.

It takes Drummonds several weeks to make a single bath; a traditional process involving casting the raw metal, shot-blasting and enamelling with the lengthy dry-frit process which gives a snow white, incredibly durable enamel surface.

The New Deco Kitchen draws inspiration from the architects and craftsmen of the 1930s, but everything about this design is innovative; from ‘floating’ freestanding pieces to clever shadow-lines in the cabinetry.  The concept also focuses on the use of feature materials, including book-matched marble, plain and decorative limestone, metallics and veneered timbers.

The English Kitchen



Inspired by the neo-classical architect Inigo Jones, this concept derives from the classic proportions and features of English period furniture.

Muswell Hill sees Martin Moore pushing this much-loved design even further, bringing in modern elements such as plain, white metro tiles, ribbed glass in cupboard doors and, in the dining area, lush velvet banquettes framing a Martin Moore smoked glass and oak table. Specially commissioned glass pendant lights bring pops of rich colour.

The New Classic Kitchen



The New Classic Kitchen has long provenance in Martin Moore’s history and carries a sense of tradition and permanence.  

It’s a grand kitchen, but a thoroughly modern one too, with period proportions refined and adapted to embrace modern technology and zoning.  This includes the spacious walk-in larder which provides ambient storage but could also be designed as a wine store or cold room.

Combining English Oak with handpainted furniture, the Architectural Kitchen has notably long elevations and rows of overhead lockers.   

As with all Martin Moore designs, this is real furniture, designed and built to order. The panelling of the doors requires exceptional craftsmanship in its construction - especially when highlighted with chrome inlays, as in the Muswell Hill showroom.  These bring yet another level of subtle glamour to this collection.

Martin Moore, who celebrate their 43rd anniversary this year, were one of the very first handmade kitchen companies.  In the early days, they built their kitchens from reclaimed timbers, but soon began to develop their own hallmark style of classic, timeless, English furniture, designed and made to order with a quality which transcends fashion.
