French country area rugs are a subset of the traditional area rug, combining the utility of the latter with more of an old world charm. French country rugs are often mistaken for the more traditional (and often more expensive) oriental floor rugs, with a variety of patterns and shapes available. Of course, the classic rug would combine both subdued color with classic patterns, allowing eyes to be drawn to the rug while highlighting the existing patterns of the room. With this said, the sheer variety of French style rugs means that it is impossible to describe any one pattern as “typical”. While most patterns tend to be more subdued, as is typical in the vein of formal decorative rugs, the styles available are truly countless.

A French rug need not be the typical rectangular shape favored by most traditional rugs – in fact, quite a number of the country style rugs are available in a rounded shape. Furthermore, patterning tends to be limited only by the creator’s imagination, with everything from single color pieces to bright, cheery motifs with every possible permutation between. Formality can generally be assured with these rugs, but if one is looking to find a casual centerpiece, one can certainly find a French country area rug to suit their room. Even if a centerpiece is not the goal, there are varieties of French rugs that can be used simply to offset or tie together the color patterns already existing in a room. The options can be somewhat overwhelming, but variety is one of the best parts of this particular style of decoration.

Area rugs are a wonderful way to tie together a room. The French country style is versatile enough to work with any sort of space, any sort of decor, and any sort of color scheme. In many ways, this sort of decoration can really be a designer’s best friend. When trying to put together a living space, make sure to consider all aspects of the room. Even an accent piece like an area rug can transform the very character of a room. It is this attention to detail, which can separate a drab room from a wonderful and vibrant living space.

In areas of fashion, makeup, and other trends, purple tends to find a home. Burgundy for fall colors, orchid in spring collections, or electric purple for summer outfits are almost always in style. It makes sense that these trends would make it into home decor, but more as accent colors. You don’t really want to douse a room in every shade of purple you can find!

Throughout history, purple has been a color associated with royalty. Rich hues adorned Egyptian palaces, Chinese emperors, and even the chambers of English queens. Today it is commonly associated with friendship, wisdom, and passion. But mostly, those who choose purple in their home simply love the color.

In the color wheel purple is the complimentary color to yellow, meaning they are opposite one another on the wheel. Because both can be very intense colors, it may be a good idea to use a pale yellow with a bright purple if using a complimentary style of decorating. Better yet, it helps to find colors which go well with purple without hurting the eyes, such as cool tones of blue or green.

If you are not redecorating the whole room and are simply looking for an area rug which can tie the decor you already have together, then look at the overall elements to your decorating. Does it have a more romantic, classic, or modern feel to it? Are the color bright and punchy or more subdued and quiet? Answers to these questions can help you decide on the type of rug to look for.

Colors such as mulberry or aubergine are less in-your-face purples which can accent almost any room nicely. Meanwhile, violet or amethyst tend to be more loud, and can be used in more chic, modern, and funky rooms. Think hip college pads or your teenage daughter’s room.

With the popularity of purple area rugs growing rapidly, many stores or resellers now carry a large selection. Some even have a whole section of their store or website dedicated to purple rugs which you can spend quite a bit of time perusing. Knowing the type of rug you’re looking for, and maybe even a few specific colors you want, can help shave time off of your search.

Design is one thing which is generally very different in purple rugs. When most think of an area rug, they either envision the 70’s shag carpet in their buddy’s van, or those rectangular rugs with intricate floral patterns. Because purple is a more modern color for rugs, the designs tend to be as well. While that shag and floral motif is definitely available, it is not as prominent as more asymmetrical designs and interesting cuts.

Imagine an octagon rug with the outline of cherry blossoms, or a large square one with an abstract art style print. These are the types of design you are more likely to find when looking at purple rugs. Polka dots, heart, feathers, even tropical flower designs are quite common. The point is that a purple area rug is more trendy than the classic options, and so the design will most likely be more interesting.

In most cases, the unique design of the rug is a great thing. But some rooms are already a bit too “busy” to add a carpet with a wild print. Luckily, there are still rugs which are simply one solid color, or have a more mellow look and can be used to calm a room down. Unless you intend for the rug to be the center of attention, it may be best to look for a quiet rug. It is really all a matter or preference, style, and room layout or decor.

Basic tips for interior decorating still apply to purple area rugs. Simply be smart, and allow your personality to shine, and even you can get a beautiful and trendy area rug to work in your home. It’s not just for the pros anymore!

If you were to go to a major rug retailer, you would likely find that more than half of the rugs they offer are made of wool. The rest of the inventory would be made up of all of the other fibers and blends, both natural and synthetic. There are some really good reasons for their popularity. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Advantages

Wool area rugs are extremely durable. A well taken care of wool rug can last for many years. Whereas there are many synthetic fibers that can be made to be just as strong and durable as wool, they are not nearly as soft. In fact, most of the synthetic materials must be blended with cotton or wool to make them soft enough to be viable as a rug. After all, who wants an un-soft area rug?

Wool also has great insulating properties. In the winter, they will keep your feet a lot warmer than walking on a bare hardwood floor. In fact, I cannot think of another material that can keep your floor as warm in the winter as wool. In the summer, they help trap the cool air in the house, rather than letting it seep into your basement/crawl space. They actually trap the cool, so that in the summer, often the coolest areas of your floor will be the wool rugs.

Another benefit is that they are easy to clean. Wool is resistant to water damage, and is usually more colorfast than cotton. Still, most of them come with cleaning instructions, and it is recommended that you follow those instructions so as to not damage your rug. The guide below should be used as a guideline, and not as replacement directions.

Rug Cleaning

The first thing that you want to do is vacuum the rug thoroughly. This is so that you do not trap dirt in the rug while you are washing it. Trapping dirt particles while washing the rug can be a cause of premature wear.

Once the rug is vacuumed, lay it out flat on a large, clean area of concrete. Rinse your rug off with a garden hose. I recommend using a wide spray, rather than a sharp stream, as it is gentler on the rug.

Next, take a mild cleaner (I recommend Woolite) and dissolve a couple of ounces in a gallon or two of water. Do NOT apply the detergent directly to the rug, or you will have spots that are very hard to rinse, and could create spot fading. You want to make sure that the detergent is mixed well with the water, and pour the solution evenly on the rug.

For this step, you should find something soft to gently “massage” the water/detergent mix into the rug. I personally use a soft brush meant for washing cars. A clean mop will also work, as will a sponge, if you don’t mind working on your hands and knees. With your “cleaning tool” gently work the detergent/water mix into the rug. I usually work the mixture lengthwise, then side to side, and finally at a 45 degree angle. Notice, that throughout this process, I say “massage” and not “scrub”.

Once you feel like the solution is worked well into the rug, rinse it well with your garden hose. You should continue to rinse it until the water is suds free. Doing a thorough job of rinsing is very important. Soap that is left in the rug can cause premature wear.

Now comes the difficult part. The rug will be sopping wet and very heavy. I will usually roll it up with towels inside of it to help absorb some of the moisture. I will then unroll it and remove the towels. The rug will still be heavy, so I recommend draping it over something that will allow it to drip dry for a little while. I personally use my back porch railing.

There are a couple of things you still need to be concerned about here. You do not want to leave it “draped” for too long, because if it dries that way, it will take on the shape of whatever it is draped over. That could leave you with a big hump in the middle of your area rug, although it will usually work its way out and flatted again.

The bigger concern is leaving it for a long time in direct sunlight. Although wool area rugs are more colorfast than most other natural fibers, it is still prone to sun fading. If you want to keep the colors vibrant, you will want to dry it outside of direct sunlight. It is usually best to dry your rug on a flat surface, out of direct sunlight.

Luckily, wool rugs are more resistant to staining than a lot of other materials. If you combine that with the durability, you will find that they are a lot easier to clean than rugs made from other materials. As far as frequency, I recommend vacuuming your rug once a week or so, depending on traffic. You can usually get away with a thorough cleaning once every six months to a year or so, again, depending upon how much traffic your rug gets.

Other Considerations

There are some other things to consider when thinking about getting a wool area rug for your home that I would like to touch on briefly. One of those is price. As far as pricing is concerned, they are somewhere on the lower end of middle, as far as organic materials go. This means that they will be less expensive than some of the more extravagant organic materials like silk and leather, but more expensive than cotton. They are more expensive than a lot of the synthetic rugs as well.

Be careful of wool blends. If you are getting a rug that is a “wool blend”, make sure you know what it is blended with. Often the properties of your rug, like durability, colorfastness, etc., will be impacted a great deal by the secondary fiber.

All in all, for most indoor applications, I prefer a 100% wool area rug. It is tough to find a material that has as many advantages for the price, and they are versatile enough to go just about anywhere. As with anything, do your research and know what you are buying and you will have an area rug that will adorn your home and keep your toes nice and toasty for years to come.

They can bring together all of the colors of a room and create a feeling of more continuity. They can help mark out the boundaries in large rooms and can immediately update the decor of almost any space. Rugs provide protection for the floors in well-used hallways and can create warmth and sound proofing in bedrooms and other areas of the house where “noiseless walking” may be desired. In the kitchen and other areas that may be slippery, area rugs can provide traction.

Since there are literally thousands of styles and colors to choose from, making a choice is probably going to be the most difficult part of getting a new rug for your home. Getting the right size at the right price is as important as choosing the proper design and color. Here you will find some suggestions that will help you make the right choice. They will help you narrow your search to something that will fit your space, your lifestyle and your budget. There are many things to consider when purchasing a rug. Let’s look at some of them.

Size and Shape

The size and shape of your new rug will be determined by the size of the space you want to cover. Now is the time to get out the measuring tape and see just exactly what size you need. Remember that area rugs usually come in standard sizes so you may have to round down to get a good fit.

The most popular area rugs are rectangular. This is for a couple of reasons. The shape is more attractive to the eye than a square, and most homes have rectangular rooms. Sometimes, a rectangular-shaped rug will be called a ‘regular rug’. As a regular rug you will find them in what are for the most part standard sizes with a few variations. The smaller rugs range from two feet by three feet up to five feet by eight feet. Medium-sized rugs go from six feet by nine feet to 10 feet by thirteen feet. The larger rugs are usually up to fourteen feet by twenty-one feet. 9×12 area rugs are the most popular with the second favored probably being the 5×8, although the 8×10 area rug is not far behind. These sizes are readily available in most stores that carry a good selection.

When purchasing a rug for the center of a room, be certain it will come close to the furniture or it will seem lost in the middle of the room. Leave a border of about one and a half feet to three feet if there is no furniture between it and the wall. The rug should serve as an anchor in the room and you do not want it to be a distraction.

More popular shapes

Rug runners are long narrow rugs that are perfect for stairways, halls and any long space. They are normally between two and three feet wide and the length is up to about twenty feet. They can also used to protect well-used hard wood floors. Look for one with a backing that provides traction.

Round area rugs are very popular right now but it is difficult to properly place furniture on a round rug in a rectangular room. The perfect place for a round rug is under a round table. This can be particularly effective in a formal dining room. However, a small round rug can still add interest to just about any room.

Square area rugs fit best in square rooms. Since there are not many square room, these rugs are more difficult to use and are not as available in stores.

Oval area rugs provide a soft look that goes well in rooms with soft furniture. This shape is a hybrid of a rectangle and a circle. They are nearly as easy to fit into a room as a rectangle and seem to be the perfect accessory for bedrooms, entry halls and dining rooms.

Odd and Novelty Shaped Rugs

Since area rugs really are the perfect accessory, they come in literally thousands of shapes. One can find over sixty thousand shapes and variations from retailers online. There are half oval rugs that are made to be placed in front of a fireplace or doorway. Octagons, triangles and hexagons are readily available as well. You will also find various animal or flower shapes, shapes that are copies of cartoon characters and even cars or buildings and houses.

Consider the Color

Choosing the right color for your room is one of the most difficult factors when buying area rugs. The color needs to be appealing and coordinate with the existing furniture and it needs to bring just the right feeling to the room. Rugs can bring in a new color, coordinate with the colors already in the room or contrast pleasingly.

The more popular colors are ivory, brown, beige, red, black, blue and green. Some colors are linked with some styles of rugs such the use of burgundy being a tradition in Persian and Oriental rugs. You will find that the borders are usually a shade or combination of shades of the predominant color in the main area of the rug. This border design is often the portion that is more easily incorporated into your room.

Design Pattern

The pattern of a rug is what makes it unique and what makes it hard to describe easily. Rug shopping is better accomplished when one can see the rug or there is a good picture available. There are many more designs than there are designers. Some designers have several lines of rugs with many different patterns and designs. Nonetheless, there are usually three main categories. They are geometric, pictorial and curvilinear.

Geometric designs are composed of placing colors and fabric in various straight lines that create rectangles, triangles and squares. One sees this type of pattern used a lot in Southwestern and Navaho rugs.

Pictorial rug designs show an image of something, such as flowers, animals or people. These rugs are not as commonly seen as geometric patterns. It is also possible to see them used as wall hangings.

Curvilinear or smoothly curved lines are often found in rug patterns. These can be used effectively in any room décor from traditional to a child’s room to a contemporary studio space.

Style

The style of your home or the style of the space that needs a new rug is the main consideration when choosing your rug. If the rug is to be placed a formal traditional living room, then it should be formal and traditional as well. A rug for the bedroom should fit in with the style of the furniture and atmosphere of the room. One can easily use a novelty rug in a child’s room but it is not such a great idea in that formal dining room.

Most area rugs fall into the traditional category and are timeless in pattern and design. There are usually borders and even borders within the outer border. Many of these designs come from established works of art and can be quite intricate. Antique rugs usually are classified as traditional. These rugs tend to be expensive.

The country where the rug originated can also define style elements that will classify it as traditional as well. Rugs that are considered Oriental are typically made from natural materials. Chinese rugs rarely have a pattern. The design is usually a message or has a meaning. These can be more colorful.

Contemporary rugs feature bright and often bold colors with unusual shape and layout of pattern. You will find squares and rectangles as well as waves or circles. Sometimes, there are bold line slashing across the entire design. These rugs are usually very easy to find and are easy to choose.

Casual area rugs are more subdued in color and design with more simple patterns or no pattern at all. The borders are plain and they are usually solid colors. Most often they are made of natural fibers.

Transitional rugs blend the lines between contemporary and traditional. The colors may fall into the traditional style while the pattern is geometric or you will find Persian influences but very bold colors. These rugs are helpful for homeowners whose personal style is a blend of several schools of style. These rugs give them the opportunity to match their existing decoration or mix it up a little.

Flokati rugs are pure sheep wool and will remind you of the shag rugs from the 1970′s. Available now in many dyed colors, these rugs were traditionally left in their natural fiber colors. Being able to get them in colors makes them easier and more fun to use in most homes.

Braided oval area rugs are easy to manufacture and readily available. Their construction makes them sturdy and easy to maintain. They can be reversed and that feature is useful to hide the signs of wear.

Southwestern area rugs are part of the Navajo weaving culture and are usually striped. They can always have patterns that are simple geometric designs. They are unique and are a wonderful addition to your walls as well. These rugs are considered art and should be placed areas where they will be not of the sun.

Understanding Knot Density

A good way to classify and compare rug quality is to check for the number of tied knots per square inch. A high number is not an automatic indication of good quality or durability, but it does indicate that the appearance of the rug will be dense. A dense rug is usually a better looking piece. A handmade piece with a high number of knots gives you an idea of how long it took to complete and what the cost is. Silk knot densities can over nearly one thousand knots. That is certainly one explanation of their high cost.

Pile

The material a rug is made of is the pile. Pile can be a synthetic or natural fiber. Natural fibers are either plant or animal based and are very popular materials for rugs. Some of these include:

Bamboo is one of the natural fibers that are readily renewable and very friendly to the environment. However, bamboo is difficult to dye.

Coir is a plant fiber that comes from the coconut and makes a very strong and waterproof rug.

Cotton is a commercially produced fiber that is strong, soft and easy to dye.

Hemp is a fiber that usually mixed with other materials to make durable rugs.

Jute resists heat and fire and does not loss its shape.

Sisal is water resistant, takes color wells and is very strong. Sisal rugs also add a lot of texture and that feature adds to their popularity.

Leather is an unexpected material for a floor, but it can be made into strips and woven into flexible rugs that smell like western saddles. Leather can also be used on wool rugs to accent the borders. Suede is softer and less durable but is combined with regular leather for some rugs.

Silk rugs are expensive and beautiful. Silk is very strong but does not do well in areas that are prone to getting wet. Silk is another material that is natural. Damage can occur if it is stretched or infested with insects or left in the sun. However, the good qualities of silk such as its sheen and feel outweigh the bad and silk is worth the investment.

Wool is the most used fiber for area rugs. It is strong but soft, moderately inexpensive and readily dyed. These characteristics make it very popular. This is another material that is easily renewed.

After the natural fibers and fabric, you will find synthetic products that were originally created in scientific laboratories. These are called man made products and can be quite beautiful, very durable and readily available. Most of them take dye very well and are easy to maintain.

Acrylic fiber dyes very well and is soft, light and has the same feeling as wool. However, acrylics can fuzz.

Polypropylene is synthetic wool. It lasts a long time, easy to clean and can be recycled. This is a good choice for busy home with pets and children.

Nylon is similar to silk. But, it is resistant to insects and mold and not as sensitive to abrasions as natural silk. Other qualities include its strength and the fact that it is lightweight.

Polyester can be stiff but it is very long lasting. Blending it with a natural fiber such as wool will soften it slightly.

Rayon makes soft and smooth rugs with a good sheen. However, it does take well to wet or damp conditions and can be easily stretched. Rayon is also known as viscose.

Rug Manufacturers

Shopping by brand can be one way to limiting your choices while ensuring quality and price. Warranty may be one thing to consider when shopping by brand. Some of the best manufacturers are Mohawk, Oriental Weavers, Capel, Couristan, Radici, Shaw, Surya and many others.

Cost

Cost is always a factor that is individual as the person who is purchasing the item. There are many thousands of rugs available that under $100 in price and just as many that are over $1000. A silk rug from the 16th century was the most expensive ever sold. Its price was over $4 million when it sold at auction at Christie’s, New York. Most people are not planning to spend that much on a rug for their floor. However, setting up a budget is another good way to limit the choices of rugs. Knowing what you can afford is important when choosing a rug. With all of the information you now have, making a good selection for your home should be fairly easy.

When you are looking at the different area rugs that are available, trying to figure out which one you are going to buy, there are a few things that you will want to look for. Choosing a good rug is something that is fun to do but it can be a little bit difficult if you do not do your “homework” first. There are several different aspects that make up area rugs that you will want to look for so that you will be able to choose the ones that look the best in your home.

The first thing that you will want to do is measure the room into which you are planning to put the rug. You want to make sure that you have a space that is at least 9 feet wide by 12 feet long that you can place the rug. Some floors that you might try to cover with one of these area rugs will not have that much space available and you might have to go with something that is a little bit smaller in size. It is never a good idea to just guess on the amount of space that you have or you may take a wrong guess and not have enough space for the rug after all.

Once you have found out that you have enough space to put the rug that you are going to buy you will want to take a look around the room. When you are looking around you want to try to figure out what the best colors for the rug you are buying would be. Most area rugs of this size come in at least two different colors so you want to try to figure out what the best colors would be to coordinate with the rest of the room that you are putting the rug in.

When you have figured out which colors you are going to use you will want to figure out which style you are going to buy. There are a variety of styles available to choose from with 9X12 area rugs so you want to make sure that you look at a few different ones in order to decide on the one that you would like to use. You will be able to find such styles as traditional, casual, transitional, and outdoor rugs that have a different look to them depending on the style that you choose. The different types of rugs that you can purchase are also made out of different types of materials.

Choosing the type of material that you want your area rug made of will be the next thing that you do once you figure out which style you are going to choose. Depending on which one you have decided to go with you will be able to find a wide variety of materials that are used to make the rugs. For example, if you choose a casual area rug you will be able to find materials such as wool, leather, or bamboo that is used to make the rug as well as other types of materials. Other styles of rugs will be made of other types of materials so make sure that you take the time to choose the type of material that you would like for your rug to be made from.

Finally, once you have made all of these decisions you will want to make sure that you find a good place to buy the rugs that you need for your home. You will be able to find a lot of different places to make your purchase from, but there is one place in particular where you will be able to get the best deals. Shopping online has a lot of great advantages that you will be able benefit from. There are a lot of great deals and there is a large selection to choose from. This means that you will be able to find 9X12 area rugs that are the right color, style, and material that you have decided on. Make sure that you make your purchase online if you want to be able to buy the best area rug for your home.

My personal recommendation is Amazon.com <- Useful link…

An area rug is defined as a rug that is designed to cover a portion of a floor. They come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and styles, and can be used in just about any room of a house, condo, town home, etc. Their many choices of design make them extremely versatile in their ability to enhance, define, or even change a room completely. Let’s look at an example.

Take, for instance, a large open area in the middle of a home. If you were to set a table and chairs in the middle of that area, they might look out of place – like they were randomly left there for some reason. If you place a 9×12 area rug there, and place the table and chairs on top of it, the existence of the rug sets the boundaries for the area, and what once was a random area, has just become almost a separate room or nook. We used, in this example, an area rug to actually create a room where before there was none.

By far the most popular use for area rugs is to enhance a room’s overall look, or theme. You can take a living room or family room with a fairly neutral theme and change the look completely with the right floor covering. Imagine your bedroom has hardwood floors. How would placing a large white shag area rug under your bed change the look of your bedroom? Remove that rug and replace it with a braided area rug. It lends a completely different look to the bedroom, doesn’t it?

The message here is simple, when shopping for area rugs, always keep in mind the look you are going for. Try to keep your theme in mind. You may find a Persian rug that you absolutely adore, but how will it look in the breakfast nook, when you have southwestern rugs in your family room about 10 feet away?

Another important consideration is size. Probably the most popular size for area rugs is 9×12. 8×10 area rugs are also pretty common. Size not only plays a big part in where you are going to place the rug, but also plays an important factor in the cost and selection. Often, a rug in a popular size will cost less than basically the same rug in a less popular size. This is often true even when the rarer sized piece is smaller. It’s all about supply and demand. It costs less money to make a rug in a popular size than in a less popular size.

The less popular the size, the less selection there will be as well. I had an experience with this personally when I was shopping. I had already planned out the rugs I would be using for my dining room and family room (both on the west side of my house). There is sort of an open hallway that runs from my family room, towards the kitchen, passing the dining room. I was looking for a runner to place in the hallway, and I don’t remember the size off the top of my head, but it was a difficult size to find. By the time I found a runner that I liked, I found myself needing to completely change my plans for the family and dining rooms.

The moral here is to shop for the rare sizes first! If I would have already bought the other rugs, I would have had to return them (which I hate to do). Try to stick with popular sizes of area rugs if you can. If you absolutely must find a rug that is of a rare size or shape, shop for those first.

Hopefully this article has helped you to get a handle on some of the basics of area rug selection. In my next article we will look a little more in depth into how to go about shopping for the right area rug for your home.
