Well, I usually err on the side of not writing things. I don't mention work and if I mention personal relationships, I try to gauge whether the person might not want it written. I've messed up a couple of times, though, but it's never been a huge deal.

I heard someone say that you should never write anything in an email that you wouldn't want everyone in the world to see. It's an extreme view, but the problem with the internet world is that it's all permanent (in a manner of speaking). There's no paper to shred and no negatives to destroy. It's there. So if you approach it that way--knowing that anyone could see anything--it makes you a little more careful. It's still not terribly easy, but it's possible.

I gave up tweeting for two reasons. One, I still have a bare-bones phone that makes tweeting a big pain in the ass. I rarely have thoughts that seem clever or interesting enough to warrant the time it takes to peck them out on my stupid phone. The second reason is the main one, though: the personal/professional lines started getting all blurry. The publisher of the magazine I work for started following my tweets, and then I realized I'd tweeted once about hating my job (essentially). Until I master the art of discretion, I'm trying to stay out of my own way, tech-wise.

Reid, I've wondered if you run into this. For example, sometimes I don't post things on my blog or Facebook that I'd like to because I know a couple people at work might see it. I started the blog intending it to be totally anonymous so I could actually post whatever I wanted to, but then I accidentally mentioned it in conversation at work.

How do you decide what to write and what to keep to yourself (or, you know, just not release into the ether)?

Lindsay, this is America. There are plenty of places that will gladly sell you a shotgun and the rock salt to put in it.

Annie, you're exactly right: blogs are made for writers. It's just that simple.

On the other hand, having a rock-salt shotgun would be AWESOME. I would totally take one of those over having a blog.

When I first moved from New York to Chicago and started a blog, my ex-roommate gave me an enormous amount of crap. You, someone who is not a total loser, having a blog? I finally had to say, dude, I am a frustrated writer in a new city with no friends and a boring job. Dude, I AM WHO BLOGS WERE MADE FOR. Along with almost everyone else.

She still has what I consider outdated opinions on the matter, and she still doesn't know my blog's URL. I intend to keep it that way.
