What the Statistic Says" width="85" height="100" title="How Many People Die From Smoking? What the Statistic Says" />

By Jason Rodriguez

How many people die from smoking? Some people might say, “Not much. No statistic says that smoking causes death. I mean, there is nobody who smoked a cigarette and died right away. Is there?”

Is this true? I looked up a fact sheet from the World Health Organization which states the top 10 causes of death in the world. And the top 10 are: (1) coronary heart disease, (2) stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases, (3) lower respiratory infections, (4) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, (5) diarrheal diseases, (6) HIV/AIDS, (7) tuberculosis, (8) trachea, bronchus, lung cancers, (9) road traffic accidents, and (1) prematurity and low birth weight.

Smoking is not in the list! But let me ask you, is smoking a disease? The answer is no. And in case you didn’t know, smoking causes 7 of the top 10 causes of death in the list above! This puts smoking as the second major cause of death worldwide!

Studies have established that smoking, whether active of passive, increases the risk of acquiring the following diseases: coronary heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, HIV susceptibility, tuberculosis, lung cancer, prematurity, and low birth weight. These diseases are all in the top 10 causes of death! All these diseases are related to smoking because cigarettes and tobacco products contains carcinogenic and mutagenic substances.

Today, a current or former smoker dies every 6.5 seconds. Every puff of a cigarette is equal to losing 15 minutes of your life. A smoker’s life expectancy is reduced by 2.5 to 10 years.

In the United States, over 443,000 Americans die from smoking. And in 2015, smoking is predicted to kill 6.5 million people.

Now, I ask you this: Can smoking cause death? It definitely can! Smoking kills! Therefore, the only option you have is to quit. Quit smoking now. Choose to live!

Don’t let the fear of smoking and disease take over your life. Get the facts about how to stop smoking.
By Tracey Edwards

I’m sure you’ve already heard a million times that smoking is harmful to the baby (and you) but maybe you didn’t understand fully what the main concerns are so this article will hopefully outline the facts about smoking in pregnancy.

Cigarettes contain about 4000 toxic chemicals in them (scary huh!) and every time that you inhale you are bringing them into your body. They reach the baby through the placenta and are also very toxic for your baby.

The main problem is that smoking damages the blood vessels (which is the reason it can cause heart attacks and stokes) and therefore harm the blood vessels of the baby and the placenta. The longer you smoke the more damage it does to the placenta and the more likely it is that your baby will be starving for food and oxygen. This the reason that many babies of smokers are smaller and stressed, and can be born prematurely.

Heavy smoking can cause such damage to the placenta that it becomes detached from your uterine wall and cause the death of your baby (and serious risk for you too). In fact smoking is estimated to be responsible for around 10% of all perinatal infant deaths.

Another major concern is that the baby grows addicted to the nicotine chemical. While the brain is developing in the third trimester studies have shown a link between smoking late in pregnancy and attention deficit disorder (ADD) and other learning disabilities. While the link is not yet conclusive, it is probably wise to avoid risking your baby’s brain to nicotine to be on the safe side.

Even if you are lucky and manage to avoid any serious health problems, if your baby has become addicted to nicotine, get ready for a turbulent first few weeks once they are born as the baby becomes increasingly grisly and irritable as they withdraw from the drug.

As a new mother, you are likely to be stressed enough with a new baby, but having to deal with it’s addiction withdrawal is not something that I’d wish on anyone!

Overall, the health implications for the baby are far too risky to just hope it won’t happen to you. While quitting can be difficult, it is worth trying for your sake and your new child’s.

By Doresa Duffield

For those of you who think that smoking while you are pregnant will not harm your unborn baby, you need to think again. Smoking during pregnancy affects not only you, but your baby’s health before, during, and after you have the baby. The nicotine, carbon monoxide, and numerous other poisons you inhale from a cigarette are carried through your bloodstream and go directly to your unborn baby. These can lead to several problems and complications during the early stages of your baby’s life.

Smoking while you are pregnant lowers the amount of oxygen available to you and your growing baby and also increases your baby’s heart rate. Smoking can also increase the risk that your baby is born prematurely and/or born with a low birth weight. Smoking while you are pregnant can also increase your baby’s risk of developing respiratory problems like pneumonia and even respiratory distress syndrome, which makes a baby have difficulty expanding their lungs and taking in oxygen.

Secondhand smoke can also affect a mother and a baby’s health. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from a burning cigarette and smoke exhaled by a smoker. The smoke that burns off the end of the cigarette actually contains more harmful substances then the smoke inhaled by the smoker. Babies exposed to secondhand smoke may also develop reduced lung capacity and are at a higher risk for sudden infant death, also known as SIDS.

For women who are pregnant and want to quit smoking, there are a few tips you can follow. You can stay active to keep your mind off smoking and help relieve tension. You can also talk a walk, exercise, read a book, or try a new hobby. Another good idea is to look for support from others. You could join a support group or smoking cessation program. Don’t even tempt yourself by going places where people are smoking such as bars or clubs, and smoking sections of restaurants.

In closing, if you are pregnant and have a problem with smoking, you really need to get help as soon as possible. There is a little life being created inside of you who is depending on you to take care of yourself so you can in return take care of them. Don’t jeopardize the life of your unborn child to get a quick nicotine rush. It is your job to be the best mother to your child at all costs.
