Hands on Healthcare at AHEC Northeast

“This is so gross! I love it!” Comments like this one filled the day as 7 students took part in hands on activities during our latest event.

Hands on Healthcare is designed to give students a real life experience into the medical field by exposing them to fun and educational activities such as CPR, injections, drawing blood, blood typing, wound care basics, physical therapy, and more. Speakers are invited to present and bring educational materials for the students to help learn about their careers. Susan Williamson, recruiter for the UAMS College of Health Related Professions, brought tools from the Surgical Technologist program. Histology and Phlebotomy were two of the favorite ares for the students, where they were able to draw blood from a fake arm, look at a human brain, and a smoker’s lung.

Justine Wolfe, a student at Sloan Hendrix High School, really enjoyed her time spent in the lab. “I really like all this gross stuff. It’s so cool. It makes me more interested in a career in healthcare.”

Oral Health at Harmony Grove School District

February was dental awareness month. 7th and 8th grade science students at Harmony Grove School in Camden Arkansas were educated on the damaging affects bad oral bacteria can have on teeth and gums. They were also made aware of the damage that could be done to our mouths due to excessive smoking and use of smokeless tobacco products. Gross visual-aid models were used to stress the importance of never starting bad habits and what your mouth could look like if the habits continued.

Hands on Healthcare

On February 14th and February 22, 2012 UAMS AHEC Southwest hosted two more Hands on Healthcare events at our facility in Texarkana. With a total of around 40 high school students grades 9-12, students were exposed to several different health professions and able to participate in many hands on activities.

We will be hosting our next Hands on Healthcare program on Tuesday, May 15, 2012.

SAU in Magnolia experiences Hands on Health Care Event

On Tuesday February 7, 2012 sixty college students on the SAU campus in Magnolia experienced their own “traveling” Hands on Health Care Event. Volunteers from the Magnolia Hospital and the SAU College of Nursing provided assistance to the recruiters from AHEC in South Arkansas and Texarkana making the experience a success. The students were exposued to seven different stations allowing them “hands on” activites in the fields of laboratory science, nursing, phlembotomy, and pharmacy. New contacts were made and more paths to UAMS were created.

A Day in the Life of Obstetrics

On Monday, November 28th, a Day in the Life of Obstetrics Staff was held at Van Buren High School in Van Buren, AR. Speakers included Licensed Practical Nurse, Cyndy Gregory; Licensed Social Worker Faculty, Elizabeth Petray; Post Graduate Resident, Dr. Sarah Holcomb. The speakers were terrific and gave very good information to the students. Being the first day back after the Thanksgiving Day holidays, it was a somewhat subdued group of students, but we still managed to get some good questions out of them. Overall the program was a great success.

AHEC El Dorado’s own “Pharmacy Camp”

On Wednesday October 19, 2011 twelve students from 6 school districts attended the fall Hands on Health Care day in El Dorado. The students were exposed to numerous careers in health care by playing with “pee” and “poop”, typing blood, experimenting with drawing blood, giving injections into oranges and practicing finger sticks by testing their own glucose levels. The students experienced life as a pharmacist by filling capsule meds with powdered sugar, drawing medicine into syringes and filling IV bags. The day ended with a trip to South Arkansas Community College to experience “Mock Surgery” with the surgical tech program students and the Respiratory Therapy department where they experienced the technique of intubation on an adult and infant mannequin.
