Back in 2002, the initial team that established Aria Systems set about finding better ways for online companies to bill for their services. They'd come from the online world themselves, and their unique experience had given them an insider’s perspective of the dotcom-telecom crash. They surmised, as few did at the time, that a key reason many online companies ran aground had less to do with the services they provided than with the way they billed for them.
The Aria team saw a large and growing category — billing software — that was stuck in an old model. The industry was falling behind. It simply did not have the dexterity to effectively manage usage- and subscription-based services as processor speeds, bandwidth, and customer expectations soared ever skyward. Billing was out of step with a business climate increasingly suited to on-demand and SaaS solutions.
What’s more, the rush to recurring billing was exploding far beyond telecom — where a multiplicity of rate plans had always existed — to every corner of the economy: media companies, consumer goods businesses, services firms. Aria saw, in the confluence of new recurring billing demands and the formidable capabilities of next-generation SaaS technologies, an opportunity whose time had come. And Aria Systems as we know it today was born.
