Department of the Navy
SBIR/STTR Success Stories
August 2007

ArmorWorks, LLC - Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) Composite Armor System

About the Technology

ArmorWorks LLC has developed a high-performance, low-cost composite armor suite for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) new Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV). ArmorWorks developed the composite armor system in response to a Navy requirement for a lightweight armor component that can be affordably produced and assembled. The system is made from low cost composite ballistic materials, providing the EFV with maximum ballistic protection while maintaining a minimum overall weight addition. The ballistic protection suite, using state-of-the-art composite materials was evaluated, tested and presented to the Navy and USMC.

In eary 2004, ArmorWorks won a contract from the Army for procurement of armor kits for the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV). In 2005, the company received a contract from the USMC to replace the existing steel armor on its fleet of CH46 helicopters, and an additional contract in 2006, from the USMC for Enhanced Small Arms Protective Inserts (ESAPI). The technology is presently being used to provide extra armor for protective vests worn by marines and soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Military and Commercial Significance

The ballistic effectiveness of this hybrid composite armor for the EFV provides unique combinations of dissimilar composite materials that offer lighter weight protection, at a much lower cost than other evaluated high performance composites. The technology demonstrates the improvement of using backings in ceramic and fragment armor systems. The armor backing reduces cost and improves multi-hit protection and structural integrity of ceramic armors against armor piercing bullets, artillery fragments and improvised explosive devices. In addition, ballistic performance models and material cost models were developed for other armor system designs. The hybrid composite armor designs, ballistic performance models are applicable to personnel, aircraft, ship, and ground vehicle systems for both military and commercial applications.

About the Company

ArmorWorks LLC is a Phoenix, Arizona privately held company that designs and manufactures high-tech body, aircraft, marine and vehicle armor, for protection against a broad spectrum of ballistic threats. The company specializes in all aspects of armor technology, design, in-house testing and material technology, and provides high-tech armor protection to DoD locations around the world. ArmorWorks has produced over 500,000 ceramic armor components for a variety of personnel armor, aircraft, and vehicle applications.

ArmorWorks Receives $5 Million Order for Blast Attenuating Seats

ArmorWorks ShockRide® Seats to Be in BAE’s Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles

CHANDLER, Ariz.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—ArmorWorks, a leading provider of advanced survivability products, today announced the receipt of an initial $5 million order from BAE Systems for blast attenuating seats to be installed in BAE’s Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. The seats incorporate ArmorWorks’ ShockRide® energy attenuating seating system which the company introduced to the defense community in February 2007. This order provides for ArmorWorks’ lifesaving seating system to be installed in more than 400 MRAP vehicles to be used by the US Army and US Marines Corps.

As an industry leader in developing energy-absorbing armor, ArmorWorks leveraged its know-how to develop energy-absorbing seats to protect soldiers from the destructive shock of a blast beneath a vehicle. The company’s ShockRide® energy absorbing seating system is US Government tested and approved for protecting against spinal injuries to troops exposed to mine blasts.

“The explosion of a mine or IED beneath a vehicle can create shock waves that are more destructive than the impact of the vehicle dropping 100 feet,” explained Bill Perciballi, president and founder of ArmorWorks. “We saw a critical need to develop a product that could save our soldiers, not only from ballistic fragments, but also from the extreme shock from a mine blast. Energy attenuating seats are a natural and needed addition to our line-up of life protecting products.”

ArmorWorks is also in the final design stages of developing a ShockRide® bench seat to be installed in BAE’s Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle, which is utilized by the US Army.

U.S. Army Apache to Get New Ceramic Armor

By KRIS OSBORN, ATLANTA

The entire fleet of U.S. Army Apache AH-64 attack helicopters is being outfitted with new lightweight ceramic armor, service officials said. The upgraded composite will replace the existing ceramic armor on the 634-aircraft Apache fleet.

“We’re in the process of upgrading armor on the Apache,” said Col. Derek Paquette, Apache program manager. The upgrades are taking place during reset and remanufacturing of the aircraft, he said.
Arizona-based ArmorWorks is doing the work under a multiyear deal inked with Boeing in 2006 to supply high-tech armor solutions for the Apache.

“We have the capability to protect from small-caliber weapons up to high-caliber armor-piercing rounds and explosive fragments,” said Tom Springsteen, ArmorWorks project manager.
ArmorWorks recently added new armor composites to 168 Marine Corps and Navy CH-46E helicopters. Unlike the Apaches, which have ceramic materials, the CH-46Es were armored with traditional steel.
“A lot of the metal armor was tied to airframes, so it took some special handling to replace it,” Springsteen said.

“The ceramic composite saves the aircraft over 300 pounds from the conventional steel that was put on,” said Bob Codney, ArmorWorks vice president. During recent ballistic testing, the ceramic armor significantly outperformed traditional steel armor, he said.

The new protective materials are of a modular, bolt-on design, so they can be replaced rapidly by better materials as they become available.
“We have a large database of recipes for composites, depending upon who our customers are,” Springsteen said. “We can tailor our solution to whatever threat level, weight or cost — whatever factors are most important to our customers.

“Besides the lightweight, high-tech protection we provided, we also worked with the customer to develop a fastening system incorporated within the armor,” he said. “It is built-in hardware, which allows us to adjust to differences from aircraft to aircraft.”

Army aviation officials emphasize modularity for armor solutions, in light of the speed at which advances in ballistic protection are being made.

“As technology improves, we are always interested in something that provides the same protection at a lighter weight,” said Col. Mark Hayes, Army Training and Doctrine Command system manager.

ArmorWorks also has provided lightweight composites for other helicopters: the CH-47 Chinook, the UH-1H Huey, the U.S. Coast Guard’s CH-60J, the Navy’s HH-60H and the Army’s OH-58D Kiowa.&nbsp;<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/armorworks/news-press/~4/tvj1_P9kaHE" height="1" width="1"/>
