SFC Mike Elliot visits the Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend

SFC Mike Elliott of the Army Golden Knights Tandem Team is spending this weekend mentoring young men attending the Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend in Dallas TX.The Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend For Young Men is a 4 day, 3 night program designed to teach the Principles of Manhood to young men to enable them to achieve their dreams and therefore become better men who are emotionally, politically and economically strong. Approximately one hundred young men, in grades 8-11, from around the country, were pre-selected to travel to Dallas, TX with a parent or guardian for a weekend of mentoring.

The goal of The Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend For Young Men is to introduce the principles of manhood and dream building that will leave an impression on these boys that will carry them through the rest of their lives. The dream is the single most important component of success next to God. A boy’s dream is the driving force behind his education and is the power behind whatever he chooses to become.

Miss Fayetteville North Carolina skydives with the Golden Knights

Today the Golden Knights tandem team had several special guests. Kinsey Boarts, recently crowned Miss Fayetteville, NC, along with Miss Harnett County and soldiers from Ft. Bragg spent time with the Golden Knights today. Kinsey learned what it takes to jump out of an airplane. Personal courage, personal strength and SSG Joe Jones, all helped Kinsey jump form over 2 miles above Laurinburg NC. SSG Jones gave the tandem briefing to 6 eager jumpers. Everyone then geared up in black and gold jumpsuits and got ready for an incredible experience. Kinsey's day with the Army Golden Knights will be passed on to many as she tells her story about the jump to women all over the City. As Miss Fayetteville she is now a role model to a number of young women in the area. Miss Harnett County also made the 2 1/2 mile jump.

Also coming out to Tandem Jump with the Golden Knights were soldiers from Health Clinics on Fort Bragg.

Blue Skies and a Little Extra Altitude

Luckily, there is air conditioning in the Golden Knights training facility at Laurinburg-Maxton airport in Laurinburg, NC. The temperatures got up to the mid-nineties in the early afternoon, but not even Mother Nature could dampen the motivation and focus of Black Team training day. The Team completed a total of five jumps: two from 3500 feet, two from 12,500 feet, and one from 14,000 feet (the extra altitude was a little treat from the pilots for the last jump of the day).

The main focus of today's training was working on freefall formations the Team uses on show site, perfecting the building process and fine-tuning the jumpers' body positions while in the formations. Quick completion and correct body position is important because on every performance jump there is always a photo mission. Black Team has three freefall photographers (SSG Todd Beckel, SSG Trevor Oppenborn, and SGT Rachel Medley), who rotate duties from jump to jump, taking pictures and video of the formations for media and to document the Team's history. The freefall photographers each have a special helmet that is specially fitted with both a video and still camera. The still camera is capable of snapping up to six frames per second with a remote shutter apparatus, which fits in the photographer's mouth and is activated by pressing the tongue switch.

In addition to improving technical skills, the team also builds camaraderie, trust, and confidence through these training days. Parachuting has certain inherent risks, especially when the performances involve tight landing areas, crowds of people, and obstacles. By training between performances, the Team is able to work together and mitigate these risks by being as proficient as possible.

Tandem Team meets Tech #Woopra

Today the Golden Knights take Woopra CEO John Pozadzides on his first ever tandem jump. John P, as he likes to be called, is at Golden Knights headquarters to teach Team bloggers the ins and outs of internet blogging. John P. also is co-founder of a premiere blogging conference.

John began his exciting adventure today with an hour of instruction from SGT Joe Jones who gave a detailed briefing on the procedures of the tandem jump and an extensive explanation about the equipment. Following the class John quickly dressed in a Black and Gold jumpsuit,harness and helment. John even brought his own HD camera to obtain additional video footage to document his thrilling 120 mph ride .John said, that he has always had a drive for speed and excitement with fast cars and motorcycles. While SSG Jon Ewald,his tandem instructor and SSG Joe Abeln videographer prepared for the jump, the Black Demonstration Team did a practice jump checking the winds. John flew in for a soft stand up landing and said It was totally unbelievable and that he could not believe the solitude and peace he felt from the experience.

John took numerous photos and video of Team jumping various flags and the new Army Strong parachute flown in by assistant team leader SGT Brandon Valle. He also creatively capture the comradery of the Team training together,parachute packing, and a presentation of a professional demonstration the "Black Team" way.

Canopy Piloting Tips: A CRASH Course in Avoiding…Canopy Crashes

It’s summer time and the time is right…for jumping out of planes! Just returning from a deployment?
Haven’t been to the drop zone for while? Visiting a new drop zone or are you just new to sky diving?

Following these basic steps will help ensure that your experience sky diving
is enjoyable and safe. Although not meant to be a complete course or a
replacement for a qualified coach or instructor, here are some tips to think
about before heading to the drop zone.

According to the United States Parachute Association, in the past year,
the largest cause of fatalities in sky diving has been individuals who failed
to follow basic safety procedures under perfectly good canopies. Paying
attention to the drop zone layout, winds and obstacles - in the air and on the
ground are the keys to safe and successful landings. Here are some things
you can do to help raise your level of awareness after the freefall is over:

► Know your Drop Zone’s lay-out, obstacles, and possible “outs” (landing areas
not on the drop zone).

► Check the wind direction and speed prior to boarding aircraft and know your limits.

► Follow the landing pattern established by the
drop zones SOP.

► When jumping after a break, ensure you jump a canopy relative to the size and type you were proficient with prior to the break and don’t be afraid or embarrassed to up-size.

► Don’t down-size canopies too quickly. The faster you down-size, the faster you
become a statistic.

► Avoid attempting high performance landings when you are not ready. A good
down wind, base, and final is the safest and best technique to utilize and is a safe way to start the summer off right.

► Never try to impress anyone on the ground. The paramedics don’t care if you can do tricks (The most impressive landing is the one that allows you to go up immediately to jump again.)

The best way to determine if you are being safe is to ask yourself this question:
“Am I proficient at what I am getting ready to do and am I comfortable with it?”

If there is any doubt, then the answer should be.... DON’T DO IT! As a regular part of “pre-landing checks,” consider making the following part of your landing rituals and routine:

► Perform a controllability check after canopy is open and you have cleared your air space.

► Watch jumpers below you to see what the pattern is. Wind direction may have changed since you took off.

► Keep an eye on your altimeter. It is just as important on approach and landing as it is during freefall.

► Identify where you are in relation to hazards on the ground and make preparations to avoid them.

► Watch out for fellow jumpers and keep your head on a swivel. The lower
jumper has the right of way !!

Football Hall of Famer takes a leap #NFL #Bengals #ArmyStrong

It was the final day here in Cincinnati and like the past 4 days it started off with low cloud coverage. Today we had the honor to introduce skydiving to a football Hall of Famer, Anthony Munoz. The Team met Anthony last month after the jump into Cincinnati Reds game. Anthony discussed his foundation and the annual Hall of Fame Football Academy, a 4 day training camp for youngsters to receive individual instruction, 7 on 7 competitions, running and tackling techniques and other fundamentals of football and life.

After all the arrangements were made, we decided to jump into the opening of the Hall of Fame football academy. So with all the youngsters present and after the cloud layer had cleared, SSG Zell exited our Twin Otter to jump in the American flag for the opening ceremony and National Anthem. The kids were so excited the began to run out to SSG Zell after he landed. But with a quick announcement of the speaker system that there was more to watch, the kids settled in for the rest of the demonstration.

Luckily the clouds parted, and Anthony Munoz, along with SSG Jones and SFC Elliott by his side with smoke, could be seen in the air. The kids began to chant "Anthony, Anthony, Anthony". They were so loud that when Anthony landed he spoke of the crowd chanting his name. Anthony waived to the crowd once on final for landing and the kids went crazy. Since Anthony was so tall, SSG Ewald elected to slide him in for a great landing. Note the pictures to see the size differences.

After a few group photos and talking to the kids, the Team quickly packed up and had to head to the airport to take off for Fort Bragg. It was a great way to end a successful and very eventful few days in Cincinnati.

Jumps, Birthday cake and training camp today in Cincinnati #ArmyStrong

Today we celebrate the US Army's 235th Birthday and there was no greater way to celebrate than a parachute demonstration by the Golden Knights Tandem Team. The Team has been in Cincinnati the past few days for tandems/demos and was invited by the Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff to celebrate the Army's birthday by jumping into the Bengals training camp.

Head Coach Marvin Lewis wanted to showcase the Golden Knights extreme Team work ethics to his players. He said he was so impressed by the professionalism he witnessed during his day with the Tandem team that he had to celebrate the Army Birthday with his team and the Golden Knights. As the jumpers prepared for the jump, SGM Young spoke to the entire Bengals team about the Army, its core values, and about the Golden Knights. The Bengals watched, for the first time, the video of Coach Lewis jumping from the Team Twin Otter.

The entire Bengals staff was then ushered outside to watch as members of Tandem Team jumped into the practice field next to Paul Brown Stadium. Once the jump was over Tandem Team introduced themselves and then conducted a packing class.

The Bengals organization and the Golden Knights ate lunch with the players and Soldiers. Keeping with long standing tradition in the Army, SGM Young pulled out the ceremonial sword to cut the Army Birthday cake along with Bengals Owner Mike Brown, Coach Lewis, SFC Gatens and Col Houser.

After lunch Coach Lewis took the Tandem team on a personal tour of the Bengals facility. During the entire day the theme was all about team work. Coach Lewis repeatedly expressed how impressed he was with the Team.

GOLDEN KNIGHT RETURNS TO THE TOP OF THE PODIUM AFTER DEPLOYMENT

On what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far in Georgia,
the competition was even hotter at "Skydive the Farm" located in
Rockmart, Georgia which was home to the 5th and final meet of the 2010
season for the Florida Canopy Piloting Association (FLCPA). 10 amateurs
and 18 Pro's competed side-by-side, utilizing a handicapped scoring
system, to give the amateurs an opportunity and a small advantage when
competing with the Professional canopy pilots, also known as "swoopers."

A total of 28 competitors showed up to compete for awards and prize
money in the 3 event competition consisting of Speed, Distance and
Accuracy. U.S. Army Soldier and Golden Knight, SFC Greg Windmiller, won
top honors outscoring 27 other competitors as the overall meet champion.
Not surprising, given Greg is the current U.S. National Champion in
Canopy Piloting speed and world record holder. SFC Windmiller had
impressive finishes this year with a win and 2 third place finishes, but
missed 2 meets due to being deployed to Iraq in support of OIF for 4
months during the season.

The top 9 competitors all had impressive scoring runs which made scoring
every round not enough. "The key to winning this meet wasn't to just get
a scoring run and be consistent, as it has been in the past. You had to
score and score well every round. With the competition so fierce and the
experience level so high, taking top honors is getting more and more
difficult" said Windmiller. The FLCPA conducts 5 meets throughout the year and uses a points system and the results to determine the overall league champion for the year.

Last year, SFC Windmiller won top honors with a twist, as he tied with
fellow competitor Curt Bartholomew. Since the organizers never expected
a tie, only one championship trophy was made. Windmiller allowed
Bartholomew to receive the trophy. As an unexpected surprise at the
final meet of the year, prior to announcing awards, event organizer and
meet director Albert Berchtold presented Windmiller with a trophy which
mirrored the one he handed over to Bartholomew the previous year.
Windmiller also donated the prize money won to the Wounded Warrior
Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) which supports and provides
assistance to service members who have been severely injured in combat.
"It's an absolute pleasure and a proud feeling for me to be able to give
back and do my part to honor our fellow Brothers and Sisters who have
made incredible sacrifices defending this great country" commented
Windmiller.

Busy Day for Tandem in Cincinnati

Sunday morning was going to be busy, but we didn't know how busy it would get. We woke to blue skies but by the time we arrived at Warren County Airport the skies were filling with grey clouds.

Today was the third attempt to take Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis on a tandem jump. While classes were being conducted for the tandem students all team members eyes were on the sky. It just didn't seem like Mother Nature wanted us to jump here in Cincinnati. By the time the classes were complete, it was a 1400 foot ceiling. Not even close to our minimum jump altitude for tandems of 7500 feet. So we waited around for a few hours and just so the Coach Lewis and the other passengers didn't get bored or go home without a true Army Strong experience, they boarded our Team UV1 Twin Otter and received a short ride with the door open. Many that was their first ride in a small airplane, let alone with the jump door open.

After landing the group was then treated to some lunch and a packing class by SSG Jared Zell. Just when we thought the day was a wash out, the clouds parted and displayed the beautiful blue skies. Cheers could be heard all over as we geared up and headed to the airplane. First up was Coach Lewis and former Bengals player now coach Eric Ball. As they climbed to altitude the skies couldn't have gotten any better. The two got out of the plane without a hitch and landed gracefully. Coach Lewis was thrilled and little speechless after landing. Eric Ball was ecstatic upon landing, he was clapping and screaming with joy. Both Coach Lewis and Eric Ball said it was worth the 1 month and 2 weather days of waiting.

The rest of the day continued with a fast pace to get in all the passengers in case the clouds decided to close back in. In addition to Coach Lewis, assistant coach Kevin Coyle also was able to finally exit the plane from 13,500 feet. PNC President for the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky areas Kay Geiger and staff members from University of Cincinnati were also able to enjoy the thrill of a tandem jump today.

Our day didn't end with the last jumper. While on the dropzone the Team was invited to the Anthony Munoz Hall of Fame Experience dinner. So we hurried back to freshen up and get into our Flightsuits for the event. The Team was introduced to the packed dining hall and to our amazement was given a standing ovation. Anthony Munoz couldn't hold back his secret any longer and told the crowd of his upcoming tandem jump into his Youth football training camp on Tuesday. The mission of the Anthony Munoz Foundation is to engage the Tri-state region to impact area youth mentally, physically and spiritually. Tonight the Foundation raised over $100,000 for area youth college scholarships. Five area high school students were chosen to receive a $20,000 college scholorship check. Each student spoke of the hardships and their accomplishments in academics and to the community. Many Hall of Fame football players like wide receiver Lynn Swann, Gale Sayers, and Kellen Winslow were in the crowd to cheer on the students.

The night was filled with honors and accomplishments by many folks. Anthony Munoz spoke of his mentor and long time friend Mr. Jim Semon. Mr Semon was a high school teacher and coach to Anthony. He inspired and guided so many youth in Ontario, California. Anthony believes Mr Semon was the reason he was able to become a Pro football player. For that reason and his selfless and tiring mentorship, Anthony created the Jim Semon Impact Award. Tonight Mr Semon was on hand to present this years award to Sam Bonasso, a local business owner, mentor in his community and most recently involved in "Feeding Freedom", travelling to Afghanistan and Turkey to deliver Outback Steahouse food to over 40,000 troops.

After the dinner and fundraisers the Team took photographs with the students who came up to us to thank us for our service. It was a great night for the foundation and the Cincinnati community. Tomorrow the Team jumps into the Bengals training camp and Army Birthday celebration hosted by Coach Marvin Lewis.

Black Team Jumps into Yankee Stadium

Black Team jumped into Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY Saturday to 30,000 screaming fans. The jump, which opened the second game of a three-game series against the Houston Astros, was part of the Yankees’ military appreciation weekend. Also present for the opening ceremonies were several Special Forces Soldiers who were wounded overseas while in support of the War on Terrorism in the Middle East.

The New York Yankees and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation work together every June to host the military appreciation weekend to honor the hundreds of thousands of Soldiers who put their lives on the line daily to preserve the freedoms all Americans enjoy. The Yankees open up a special press box with food and drinks for the Soldiers and families who participate in the ceremony, where they can enjoy the game and relax.

The day dawned cloudy and hazy, casting uncertainty on whether the jump would go as planned. As the morning wore on, the cloud layer lifted slightly and the aircraft was able to get to the jump altitude of 2500 feet with no issues. The haze did persist, however, and the iconic New York City skyline was barely visible in the background.

SSG Trevor Oppenborn jumped out first to narrate, then the rest of the jumpers exited on the next pass. SSG Brandon Valle and SGT Brandie Phillips put together some canopy relative work at the top of the stack, proudly flying the New York Yankees’ flag under the Black and Gold canopies. The crowd was ecstatic, and the roaring cheers could be heard well above 1000 feet!

Immediately after landing, the jumpers formed the signature Golden Knights team lineup directly in front of home plate, as SSG Oppenborn introduced them to the crowd one by one. Country music star Kenny Thomas, former Army Ranger, sang the National Anthem and Lieutenant General Francis H. Kearny, III, the Special Operations Command Deputy Commander, threw the first pitch and the game started.

The jumpers made their way up to the press box and enjoyed the rest of the game with friends and family. Much to the chagrin of SSG Oppenborn, a Houston native, the Yanks beat the Astros with plenty of room to spare!

Gold Team gets the show started in Milwaukee

Due to low clouds on Saturday the airshow in Milwaukee was completely shut down, but on Sunday the clouds parted and the show went on. Gold Team opened up the show on Sunday, performing a mass formation mixed with canopy relative work.

For the afternoon show the team had a chance to jump out of a C-17 that was also performing at the airshow. The Navy Leap Frogs were also on the airplane. The team leader of the leap frogs had his final performance in Milwaukee. He chose to jump with Gold Team and perform CRW with the team leader of the Gold Team.

Tandem begins a weekend journey

Thursday evening two members of the Tandem Team headed out on a road trip to Cincinnati, OH. SSG Joe Abeln and SSG Jon Ewald hauled the tandem equipment for the second Cincinnati Tandem camp. Since all Golden Knight aircraft was in use for the busy weekend of demonstrations, the only way to get the equipment to Cincinnati was to drive it. The two arrived in Cincinnati just hours before the rest of the Team on Friday.

While SSG Abeln and Ewald were driving north, the remaining team members began Friday with an early morning tandem jump and demonstration into the Pope Elemantry School. It was the last day of school for the students. They were thrilled to be outside to watch their Principal Dr Joel Grim land in front of the school. After landing Principal Grim was embraced by all the students cheering and clapping with excitement. It was a great way to end the school year.

With the first demo of the day done, the team packed up the their parachutes and headed back to the Team hanger to get ready for the next demonstration. Yes, two demonstrations in one day for the Tandem Team. After a short break the Team loaded up on the UV-18 Twin Otter to head to Hope Mills, NC. This time the demonstration was for the opening ceremony of the Special Forces Association Convention. It was an honor to be asked to perform for so many elite Soldiers. The crowd was ecstatic that the Golden Knights were jumping into the Convention. More than a 1000 Special Forces retirees and their familys cheered and welcomed the Tandem Team into the landing area. After a short stay to talk to the crowd, the Team was heading back to Fort Bragg.

With the demonstrations over and the parachutes packed back up, the Team headed back to Pope Air Force Base to again board an airplane. This time though, it was to fly to Cincinnati, OH for this weekends tandem camp. After a short 2 hour flight the Team was landing at Middletown airport.

With two demonstrations done and a flight to Cincinnati the Tandem teams day was finally done when we checked into our hotel. This is going to be a very busy weekend with demonstrations and Tandems. Stay tuned for more from Cincinnati.
