Mario Wilson spent more than two decades in the U.S. Army, serving in Afghanistan before retiring to Indiana where he helped other veterans navigate government red tape and receive their benefits.

Leonard Bond has a lengthy criminal record including arrests for shooting two men in a drug deal, robbing a man of $7 at gunpoint, having sex with a 14-year-old girl and slapping a man in a wheelchair.

Wilson and Bond met just before dawn Saturday morning at the Denny’s Restaurant at 8808 North Michigan Road.

Wilson is dead.

Bond is charged with his murder.

Wilson and girlfriend Karen Dunbar, herself a veteran, were having breakfast with family when Bond and a young woman sat down in the booth adjacent to their table.

“The young man came in and sat behind us and he started making insulting remarks and so we played it off for a second,” said Dunbar. “Mario said, ‘You’re being disrespectful. That’s uncalled for.’”

Dunbar said Wilson, 46 and a retired Sergeant First Class, believed in right and wrong and respect and duty.

“He was a man of his word. You have to step up and do what has to be done,” Dunbar said.

After a few more words, Dunbar said Bond left the restaurant, but returned moments later to knock on the window where Wilson was sitting.

“At this time, when the young man did that, he immediately turned and started running for the door. That’s when Mario got up and he ran out the door and as he was running through he said, ‘He can’t come back in here.’”

Dunbar said she didn’t know if Wilson spotted Bond’s gun or maybe he just expected the worst.

“He seen the danger that was about to come in and he wouldn’t let that young man come in to hurt anyone else. He was not going to let that young man come back in there.”

Dunbar and other customers were just a few steps behind Wilson but before they stepped outside, there were three gunshots.

“By that time I hit the door and Mario was fighting the guy. He had…he’s been shot and he still had the man’s arm…the man can’t get (to his gun).

“I grabbed the man’s arms as well and in between the two, Mario had eye-to-eye…looking at this young man and keeping him from being able to pull the trigger again.”

The gun clattered off across the pavement. The customers wrestled Bond to the ground. Dunbar tried to save Wilson’s life.

“And just in a snap, life has changed like that,” said Dunbar.

After IMPD arrived and Wilson was taken away by medics, Dunbar looked at the man who just shot her boyfriend.

“I guess the young man…eventually it got to him what he had done and he was sitting there and every once in a while shaking his head.

“He started from ten down to one and all he could do was put his head down. I did tell the young man that his soul was going to hell,” Wilson said. “I have to say we pray for the young man’s soul.”

Dunbar said before forgiving Bond she screamed at him in, asking if he knew what he had done in killing the man she loved.

“He was happy for you. He wanted you to be happy in what you did and to enjoy life and he stood up for what was right which is what everyone should do,” she said to him.

One of Mario Wilson’s son is due to join the military soon.

Wilson was a Mason and a member of the American Legion.

The Legion Post at 2523 Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Street will honor him in a memorial service later this week.

1LT FIola

When 1LT Stephen Fiola organized the “Tough Ruck” event for this year’s Boston Marathon, neither him nor the Soldiers rucking with him could have foreseen the tragedy which would unfold at the finish line.

A native of Massachusetts, 1LT Fiola dreamed of running the Boston marathon. The marathon takes place every year on a day known in the state as “Patriot’s Day”, which commemorates the events leading to the birth of our nation. 1LT Fiola began training for the marathon but unfortunately five years ago he sustained an injury which would prevent him from running the race. While disheartened, he found hope after learning of a group of Soldiers who rucked the marathon. He thought that would be a great way to participate in the time-honored event.

Four years ago 1LT Fiola rucked his first Boston marathon and has done it twice since then. He found that during the marathon there were pockets of Soldiers who rucked the event, most from Boston, some from Rhode Island, New York and various units from the northeast. 1LT Fiola saw in this an opportunity to do something to give back to an organization which gives selflessly to Soldiers.

Military Friends Foundation is an organization which has touched 1LT Fiola’s life personally, it is an organization which supports the families of Soldiers through deployments, after deployments, and most importantly in the very tragic times when family member’s loved ones don’t return from deployment. 1LT Fiola has seen Military Friends Foundation help the families of his own friends after they passed and so, it was in honor of MFF that 1LT Fiola organized this year’s first annual “Tough Ruck”.

He organized the small pockets of Soldiers from the northeast who commonly rucked the Boston marathon and put together the “Tough Ruck” as a way to raise money for MFF. Officially the “Tough Ruck” consisted of 20 people but when they gathered at the start line to step off there was a few more last minute participants. Two of the “Tough Ruck” participants were actually deployed to Afghanistan but still participated in the event by rucking at the same time as those in Boston, which was about 1330 Afghan time for the entire 26.2 miles on their respective outposts.

Prior to the event 1LT Fiola provided many resources to help the Soldiers train for the ruck, to include a dietary plan, a training regimen and some guidance from his previous experiences in rucking the event. When asked, what was some guidance provided to the ruckers, 1LT Fiola stated, “I told them not to be heroes. Don’t stuff your rucksack heavier than you can carry it. 26.2 miles is a long way.” The average ruck for the participants was about 35 to 40 pounds.

Tough Ruck team before the Boston Marathon.

The group participating in the ruck had a scheduled SP time of 0500 on the morning of the marathon, to attempt to avoid the press that traditionally gathered at the start line. However, when 1LT Fiola arrived at 0405, they were already there. So, following a barrage of questions and interviews from every news organization from FOX to NBC, his group stepped off at exactly 0520.

Along the way, 1LT Fiola and the 1SG of his National Guard unit, 1SG Bernard Madore, kept the Soldiers motivated. As some Soldiers, rightfully so, began to feel the effects of such a long ruck, 1LT Fiola and 1SG Madore kept them moving. When a Soldier fell out at mile 19 due to an injury, 1LT Fiola and 1SG Madore were there to make sure he got the treatment he needed, then kept rucking on.

It was approximately 1415 when 1LT Fiola and 1SG Madore crossed the finish line, 45 minutes before their lives would be changed forever.

1LT Fiola described the events to us by telling us he had conducted a safety brief prior to the ruck and established a rally point for everyone to meet at the finish line. “It was a great feeling crossing the finish line and seeing those Soldiers who had already finished waiting there to greet you.” He further explained, “It’s such a surreal feeling seeing the athletes finish, hearing the crowd cheer you on, it’s always a great experience.”

As any soldier knows, the first thought on his mind was to get the ruck off his back and take a break. Following their finish, 1LT Fiola and 1SG began getting accountability of their group and checking Soldier’s feet and overall well-being. They sent a few Soldiers to the medical tent, which would soon become ground zero. Those Soldiers, however, were treated and returned to the rally point as four other Soldiers were just finishing the ruck. 1LT Fiola recalls sitting around with the group and laughing, joking and enjoying the camaraderie, along with the joy of finishing the ruck. It was then they heard the first blast.

“My first thought was there is no way that was a prank” he recalls, “And everybody just paused for a fraction of a second. Then there was that switch….most Soldiers, Doctors, nurses, they get the switch. Your instincts, your training takes over and you know what needs to get done.”

It was at that moment 1LT Fiola took charge of his group. “I knew I was the Officer-in-Charge and I had to get accountability and lead my guys.” He and 1SG got accountability of their guys and instructed them to remain at the rally point. SFC John Thompson was put in charge of the group, as the second blast then struck less than 100 feet away. 1LT Fiola directed SSG Mark Welch to the set of bleachers across the street from the blast where pandemonium had taken over. Without hesitation SSG Welch ran to the bleachers and aided the elderly, the children and anyone who needed help in getting out of the area safely.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-5599" alt="Immediately helping out casualties, 1SG Bernard Madore and 1LT Fiola tear down the fence to help the wounded.
1LT Fiola and 1SG Madore rushed across the street, through the flood of people running away from scene, and immediately began tearing down a fence which separated the wounded from the medical help they needed. The fence was connected to scaffolding which, as 1LT Fiola recalls, “prevented ambulance and first responders from being able to easily move in and out of the area to treat the mass casualties. There was glass falling from the building above and the area simply needed to be cleared. We knew the fence had to go.”

1LT Fiola and 1SG Madore, along with two officers from the Boston Police Department pulled, yanked and tore the fence down. “It was hard at times to keep a grip, the fence was covered in blood.” 1LT Fiola recalls in graphic detail of the event occurring before him.

After getting the fence down and out of the way, 1SG Madore was asked by a nearby nurse to help her tend to a child, no older than four or five-years-old who was wounded. “I remember looking down at 1SG, who has children of his own, holding this young boy, the side of his face burned and slightly charred. We just looked at each other with this disbelief, the look on 1SG’s face was ‘what is this? This is the United States, this should not be happening.’ It is a moment I will never forget.”

1LT Fiola had immediately began helping a man who was on fire, his face was covered in blood and he could not see, “it seemed he had been facing the blast, though I don’t know for sure.” SSG Welch had returned and after putting the fire out 1LT Fiola instructed SSG Welch to take the man to medical personnel.

WIth no regard to safety, Soldiers of the National Guard spring into action.

“The doctors and nurses had arrived so quickly and were doing such a great job of treating and triaging patients, I was helping to stop bleeding, 1SG was applying tourniquets. I remember so many people screaming for tourniquets. We were using whatever we had, one man had lost both his legs and had a belt wrapped as a tourniquet on one of them. It seemed like a battle zone. It was horrible. It was a complete mess. There was [stuff] everywhere, to include body parts and a sea of blood running through the streets.” He recalls, again, in graphic details seared into his mind.

When asked what he thought was going on, did he think it was an act of terror, an accident, what was his thoughts, he replied “It was about safety and security at that point, not diplomacy. We didn’t know what was going on and we didn’t care, we just knew we had to help.”

Four of the Soldiers from a different group, were still on the course when it happened and were caught between both blasts. They immediately stopped rucking and helped people evacuate the area and when they were finished went to the rally point with SFC Thompson to be accounted for. The Soldiers at the rally point were helping secure the area, move people out of the area, assisting in anyway needed.

After completing such a physically and mentally draining ruck, some people ask ‘how you can find it in yourself to be able to respond like you did?’ 1LT Fiola responds to that simple question as saying his military training was “Preparation 2nd to none. A lot of what we go through is about endurance, mentally and physically. From a physical standpoint, tired didn’t matter. Never give up and always drive on, at all costs. The mental game and physical game comes hand-in-hand.”

After doing all they could as the Boston Police Department, the flood of doctors and nurses, and the special operations descended upon the area and secured it, 1LT Fiola and 1SG Madore returned to their group of Soldiers at the rally point, who were all present and accounted for awaiting any tasks asked of them. “It was the proudest moment of my life returning to my group and seeing them all there like that.” 1LT Fiola recalls.

[raw video of the boston bombing, which has been identified as a act of terror]

He remembers as he got accountability and began to move his group out the adrenaline shock started settling and the pain from the 26.2 mile ruck started kicking in, he felt his back hurt, he felt the limp in his leg. He remembers it was only then he realized the pain. When asked what words he would like to put out to the world, what final thoughts he had after everything was said and done, he made this statement:

“I think the most important part of all this is that events this horrific, like the bombings in London, 9/11, events like this have already happened. We can learn how to better prevent them but when prevention fails all we can do is rely on our training. The Soldiers with me, the doctors, nurses, the special ops team, the Boston Police department, the first responders, and their evacuation plan was phenomenal. They definitely saved lives and watching them and my Soldiers in action was amazing. That is the fire and the flare that keeps America alive. It is unfortunate it happened on what Massachusetts calls “Patriots Day” but it makes it even more important. Because now we know how important it is to have the freedom we enjoy.”

On 15 April 2013, 1LT Fiola and 1SG Madore, of the 1060 Transportation Battalion, SSG Mark Welch, SFC John Thompson, and every single Soldier there exemplified, nay, personified what DUTY and SELFLESS SERVICE really mean. Every doctor, nurse, police officer, fire fighter, every first responder placed all before their own. It is the action of these heroes which make us all proud to call ourselves Americans. We salute you every one.

Those who attack us may aim at creating panic and terror but look at the pictures, look at the video, read this story – all you do is galvanize us. The spirit of the American, the fighting spirit of a Soldier is only strengthened; our resolve is ever more resolute.

Thank you to every Soldier, first responder, every citizen, everyone who made us all proud to call ourselves Americans. We send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families of the lives lost to this senseless act of violence. Our prayers are with the city of Boston and our country as we mourn our loss and treat our wounded.

Keep in mind, whoever is responsible, those like 1LT Fiola, 1SG Madore, SSG Welch, SFC Thompson, those of us who wear our nations uniform, the warriors of America’s fighting force, stand ready at freedom’s front door to ensure you regret the day you tested us. May God have mercy on your soul and may God bless the United States of America.

Todd North retired from the Marine Corps and worked as a bouncer at a bar. A fight broke out and North, along with other bouncers, threw those involved out of the bar. One of the punks who started the fight returned to the bar with a handgun. North, an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, immediately moved to the front of the crowd of innocents in the bar and shielded the door with his own body. After shots were fired, mortally wounding North, he returned fire and injured the suspect. Keeping the suspect out of the bar, North was the only fatality of the shootout.

Responding like a true Marine, North quickly reacted to an evolving dangerous situation with no regard to his own life. While three others were injured by the shots fired by the punk with a gun, their lives were undoubtedly saved by North’s actions.

I offer the highest of condolensces to North’s wife and toddler son who survived him. I offer the highest regards to our fallen brother-in-arms and may our nation not go without knowing his actions, which saved the lives of innocent people from the shots fired by a worthless punk.

God Bless you Mr. North, may God bless your family, may God bless those injured, may God have mercy on the soul of the punk who assaulted you, and may God bless America. Always.

Update #1 (1818 EST)

Two explosions shattered the festivities of the Boston Marathon finish line. This clear act of Terrorism on American Soil has devastated the American People as a whole. Every man, woman and child has been touched by what has happened during the Boston Marathon. The information is still unclear, but initial reports state that people have been killed and several have been injured (as of now, an estimate of 100 injuries ‘Boston Globe’). There are reports of limbs scattered all over the area where the explosion’s occurred. Any information that can be gathered by the USAWTFM team will be disseminated in an appropriate manner.

While this horrific event is still taking place the team would like say thank you to a few military and civilian personnel that we are honored to call HEROES. The police officers, firefighters, EMS and Massachusetts National Guardsman that rushed their way into harms way to save fellow Americans should not be overlooked. Immedietally following the exlposion, two unidentified National Guardsman rushed to the scene to remove debris and save their fellow citizens in their most helpess time of their lives. These SOLDIERS that I am proud to call brothers cared not about their safety, but rather cared for others. They represent evrything that the military has encompassed in us. If you can identify these folks, Please contact us at contact@armywtfmoments.com We want to MAKE SURE that these guys are recognized for their bravery while doing a routine job of protecting the American People.

So I’m at pre-mob getting ready for deployment. I look on my company’s Facebook page and there is a news article posted about our departure ceremony. Underneath the article is a comment from my 1SG’s wife that talks about how she hopes our commander acts more professional overseas than he does here (he’s goofy at times but still a great leader and professional in my eyes). A joe’s wife then stands up for him and comments that she trusts him to bring her soldier home.

The 1SG’s wife then responds with how the CPT has never deployed before and doesn’t know what he’s doing and how it will be the other leaders that will be bringing the soldiers home. (Is it just me or is she out of line?!) I immediately reported this to our UPAR and she got it deleted. But not before a bunch of us saw it and were able to screen shot it. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing… WTF?!

This story comes to us from Holly Hill, FL. A wounded Marine Corps vet by the name of Eddie Colosimo runs a restaurant and bar by the name of Holly Hill Bikers for First Amendment Rights. His granddaughter, grandson, and son-in-law all serve in our great Armed Forces as our fellow brothers and sisters-in-arms. So, about two years ago Mr. Colosimo decided to put up a flag representing each branch of the military as a way to honor our active, reserve and guard Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marine and Coast Guard — past and present.

Fast forward two years later. In March the city passed a new law under which Mr. Colosimo can be fined for flying the flags. The flags now violate a new city code under the present law. Mr. Colosimo recieved a letter from the city informing him that any temporary flags must be flown through a permit. These flags are not temporary and have been flown by the Marine vet for two years. For everyday the flags fly Mr. Colosimo is being fined $300. However, in true fighting spirit, Mr. Colosimo is standing up for his rights under the first amendment, his rights as a citizen and showing the true fighting spirit of a Marine. His response was simple.

“The fines will start today (Friday) for every day the flags fly…Please don’t try to tell me my Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force flags are flutter signs, and compare them to beer signs. That doesn’t fly!…You’re gonna tell me that I can’t honor them… show respect for them? I’m sorry. Bring your handcuffs. I’ll go to jail. I don’t care.”

The city council will hold a special session in two weeks to “review the law and the situation”. Insert the WTF Nation.

It is up to us as a community of vets to support our vets. It is imperative we persuade, influence and express to the city council as to why any law not permitting something as simple as flags for the branches of service, at a privately owned busines, which are not impeding traffic or otherwise dangerous — is not a law we will tolerate. They are flown under the very rights provided by vets like Mr. Colosimo.

We would like your responses to the city council, mayor and other members to be level headed and properly represent us as a sound minded veteran community. With that being said, we are hereby issuing a Call For Fire for the following grids:
