Bringing Symfony 2 to the cloud.. perhaps.

It’s been quite a while since I last posted a blog on here, so I figured I could write about my new side project to keep you guys busy. ;)

About 8 months ago I wrote about Symfony 2 because I wanted to use it for the Luister.us project (which has been put into the fridge for now, I’m simply to busy with paid work to develop such a large project on the side). Since then I’ve been trying out some stuff with Symfony 2 and I’ve been looking at other PHP frameworks too. All in all I must see, even though I’m still an unexperienced user, Symfony 2 is still my favorite framework from all the ones I’ve looked at (including Flow3, Lithium, Kohana, CakePHP and many others). I guess I’m a big fan of the concept behind the framework and their approach to things. And while the documentation of other PHP frameworks often appeared to be far from complete or was outdated, the Symfony 2 docs are actively maintained and very easy to understand.

Enough about Symfony 2 for now, let’s talk about getting your web application to the end-user, in other words, putting everything online. For a future project I was looking for tips and blogs about scaling a Symfony application and I came across a guide from Pagoda Box. They offer scalable web-hosting, as they call it themselves, and I figured, that’s what my client might need! You can try their service for free, so I decided to give it a try.

At first I was really impressed, they use Git (yes, I’m a fanboy.. kinda) and offer quite a few options which would make deploying and maintaining a web application far more easier than the way most of my clients currently prefer to work. They offer an attractive looking and easy to use dashboard to manage your apps and services. Their support seems to be awesome and, probably the most important thing, their prices seem very attractive compared to others.

Unfortunately deploying a fresh Symfony 2 app was rather difficult. I’ve done some research and I guess the problem is the way Symfony 2 prefers to manage its vendors / bundles. I tried a few possible solutions for this, but it looks like I have to add all the repo’s from the deps file as a submodule. Besides the fact that this seems to be a tedious process, the bin/vendors command and deps file work really easy and I don’t really want to loose this convenience.

My solution? Well, I haven’t got one yet, but about an hour ago I decided this is going to be my new side-project. I’m planning on creating a set of tools to manage these submodules using the same deps file and also add other functionality to make deploying your Symfony app to services like Pagoda Box a breeze. I will put everything on my GitHub once I’ve got a first alpha version so you guys can help me with it and you can enjoy it too.

By the way, I’m calling it Gazebo and I hope to announce further details about its functionality and perhaps even an ETA for the first alpha release soon.

Have a nice day! :)

PS: I recently discovered a (free) service called CloudFlare you might want to check out too.

Chocolade koekjes!!

2 eieren

200 gram kristalsuiker

110 gram lichtbruine basterdsuiker

1 zakje vanille suiker (8 gram)

1 theelepel vanille aroma

250 gram bloem

75 gram cacaopoeder

5 à 10 gram bakpoeder (half zakje)

snufje zout

circa 300 gram chocolade (ik gebruikte 80 gram melk, 80 gram wit, 140 gram puur)

Bereidingswijze

Hier lig ik dan weer
Alles is stil
Hier lig ik dan weer
Weet maar niet wat je wil
Ik lig maar te peinzen
God wat is het hier koud
Ik lig maar te peinzen
of jij echt van me houdt

Ik kan er niet tegen
was de liefde maar niet
Ik kan er niet tegen
het is vaag zoals je ziet
Wil ik het wel zien
wat jij voor me voelt
Wil ik het wel zien
wat jij nu echt bedoelt

Ditmaal rechts
Want links is van jou
Lig ik te liggen
Oh, schat, kom toch gauw

Het kan me niet schelen
wat jij nu bedoelt
Het kan me niet schelen
ik weet wat dit hart voelt
En met mijn ogen dicht
voel ik toch je liefde
Met mijn ogen dicht
hou je toch van mij.

Day 30: Your favorite song at this time last year (30 Day Song Challenge)

I believe by this time last year I listened a lot to the live album this song is on (it could have been a few months earlier too, I’m not sure). This song really got stuck in my head at some point. I’m sorry if it gets stuck in yours too.

I remember getting this CD from one of my brothers when I was younger. I believe it was called GigaDance something and something else. :’)

Anyway, this was definitely my most favorite song on that CD and for some reason I still like it!

Next challenge?

As you might have noticed I’ve almost completed the 30 Day Song Challenge. Since I found it quite amusing to update my blog frequently and not really having to think about what I’m going to write about, I decided to try another challenge.

I found these three on the internet:

Top Fives 30 Day Challenge

30 Days About Me Challenge

I’ve also found a No Sex for 30 Days Challenge, but I’ve completed that numerous times already. :’)

Tell me which one you want me to do or if you know another awesome challenge, drop me a line too!

Well, this is a song I would listen to if I had it on my iPhone (which I use as an iPod / MP3 player as well). It’s from Tim Knol’s latest album and I absolutely love this song. It’s amazing!

Day 21: A song that you listen to when you're happy (30 Day Song Challenge)

I often listen to jazz when I’m happy. So the song for today is a jazz-piece for trombone. Unfortunately I could not find a YouTube video (if you can, please do let me know!) so I’m putting up a Spotify link. I actually have this song on CD, which is very rare, cause I don’t have a lot of CD’s. Hope you like it and that someone will be able to find a YT video with this song!

I listen to this band a lot when I feel angry or sad or whatever and this is one of their songs that might be put on repeat in those situations. Yesterday I was feeling sad and I put this song (clicky clicky - this is a link - yeah really!) on repeat for a while, so check that out too.

Day 19. Talking about 19, that was the name of this artist’s previous album. I’ve listened to her most recent album so many times. Since I like almost all the songs on it, I just picked one at random.

I found so many great artists and bands on YouTube, that it’s really hard to pick just one. I was thinking of Tiffany Alvord first, but I decided to go for another band which I’ve been subscribed to for years and years on YouTube. I believe this is one of their most recent songs. Hope you like it, I know I do!

This song was the 3FM Megahit a few weeks back and I heard it throughout the whole day back then and it’s still being played often on the radio. I like the sound of this band a lot. Hope you do too!
