It is of benefit to those who cannot "switch off" and is an ideal oil for chronic worriers, relieving nervous agitation, feelings of panic and palpitations. It is also very helpful for mature or damaged skin and can be used to treat irregular periods, catarrh, laryngitis and asthma. Pictorial evidence from the tombs of the Pharaohs shows that Frankincense has been used since 1500BC.

Rose (rosa centifolia)

Rose oil, which is extracted from the petals by distillation or solvents, is in my personal opinion beyond compare for treating stress related conditions, particularly depression and anxiety. It has a very gentle but strong, uplifting effect on the psyche and a balancing effect which can help individuals to “see problems in proportion." Many aromatherapists believe that Rose can mimic the effect of hormones so it is often used to treat psychological problems linked to female bodily functions such menstruation or child birth, PMS or post natal depression.

Jasmine Absolute (jasminum officinale)

Jasmine is a precious oil often referred to as the “King of Oils.” It engenders a feeling of optimism and is an excellent choice to counteract feelings of mental and physical exhaustion, helping to increase courage, confidence and optimism and battling the fear of the unknown. It has an affinity with the female reproductive system and is a key ingredient of most classic perfumes dating back to the C16th. It is also beneficial for irritated or sensitive skin.

Natural solutions for summer ailments

With holidays just around the corner we've put together a range of Summer Health Essentials to help you deal with everyday summer ailments! It has a profoundly balancing effect on the emotions which makes it ideal for the hyperactive, workaholic types or the chronic worriers. It is also a useful oil to use to help treat stress-related skin conditions such as allergies and eczema and is generally believed to stimulate the immune system making it useful for those people who tend to succumb to “bugs” when they are working very hard. Chamomile has been used for over 2000 years for treating nervous complaints. Its name derives from the Greek 'Kamai' meaning ground apple because of its fresh fruity scent. It was called Maythen by the Saxons and was revered as one of their nine sacred herbs, later being adopted by the Christians and dedicated to Saint Anne who was the mother of the Virgin Mary. In the language of flowers chamomile stands for “Patience in adversity". It is often known as the “Plants Physician” because it seems to improve the health of the plants within its immediate vicinity.

Sandalwood (santalum album)
Sandalwood is very much a soft comforting oil, emotionally comforting to men and women. It is very kind to the skin and has a balancing effect, bringing dry or oily skin to a state of equilibrium. It is a well known antidote to nausea and it generally calms the digestive system. It also has a soothing effect on the nervous system, calming the nerves and inducing sleep. The therapeutic properties of Sandalwood have been known since the fifth century BC. The wood has been considered sacred by most civilisations and was used to build temples whilst the oil has always been used in the embalming processes of ancient civilisations. The Indians believe that Sandalwood imparts energy into those using it and that it has the power to enlighten the mind. The Japanese use Sandalwood in their worship of and communication with Buddha whilst the Moslems believe that Sandalwood will purify body and soul and carry prayers heavenward.

Lavender (Lavendula Angustifolia)
Lavender is distilled from the flowers and leaves of the herb and is a very well known, widely used and inexpensive essential oil which is an effective anti-depressant. It is a good “balancer” so it is useful in helping people to recover from mood swings, is a well known treatment for insomnia and is equally good for relieving tension headaches. It has a restorative, tonic effect which makes it useful for treating individuals with debilitating fatigue or lethargy and it is an effective pain killer and anti-spasmodic so it is valuable in treating tension related “aches & pains” of a muscular nature. The name derives from the Roman 'Lavare' which means “to cleanse”. It refers to the Roman custom of scenting baths with the leaves and flowers of the plant. Matthiole the Sixth Century Botanist regarded lavender flowers as most effective against conditions of melancholy. Lavender was popular in the monastic medicinal gardens of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and even earlier than that, in the twelfth century, Abbotess Hildegarde dedicated a whole chapter in her herbal to the medicinal uses of Lavender. Lavender has been used since pagan times to purify the air and the mind. This is linked to another of its pagan uses which was to drive out wicked spirits and, later on, witches. Gerard in his Sixteenth Century Herbal said that the flowers helped to cure “lovesickness” and keep one chaste. However in the seventeenth century, prostitutes would wear a sprig of Lavender to advertise their trade. The Victorians thought that it was an excellent headache cure and would often wear a sprig under their hats.

Father's Day Pampering / Men's Grooming

Father's Day is on its way – you love him to bits but you're on a tight budget! It is clinically proven to improve memory and concentration and can combat work-related fatigue or improve focus as an aid to study. It is an effective hair tonic and is reputed to promote growth and improve condition.

Rosemary has a similar action to Eucalyptus so it is an excellent oil for treating colds and flu and clearing the sinuses. It is a warming oil which is helpful in treating muscular aches and pains and arthritis.

Safety note:
Avoid in pregnancy and if epileptic

Blends well with:
Lavender, Geranium, Sandalwood and Bergamot

Historical note:
Rosemary, from two words "Ros" "Marinus" meaning Rose of the Sea, was considered a sacred plant by the Romans. Christians believed that the flowers were originally white but turned blue when the Virgin Mary hung her cloak on a bush on the journey to Bethlehem. Throughout the ages Rosemary has been carried to ward off evil spirits and protect against illness. Its medicinal properties were documented as early as 1370 and it has been used throughout the ages since. In the West Rosemary has always been associated with the love of friends as in Ophelia's much quoted line from Hamlet "That's Rosemary for remembrance".

Julie's Aromatherapy Plant Roadshow - French Lavender

Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia)

Everyone's favourite - French Lavender!

Lavender, distilled from the flowers and leaves of the herb, is a widely used Essential Oil which is an effective anti-depressant. It is a good "balancer" so it is useful in helping people to recover from mood "swings.

It is a well known treatment for insomnia and it is equally good for relieving tension headaches. It has a restorative, tonic effect which makes it useful for treating individuals with debilitating fatigue or lethargy. It is an effective pain killer and anti-spasmodic so it is valuable in treating tension related "aches and pains" as well as the pain associated with arthritic or rheumatic conditions.

Also used for insect bites, chilblains, varicose veins and cellulite.

Blends well with:
Lemon, Bergamot, Geranium and Sandalwood

Historical Note:
The name derives from the Roman 'Lavare' which means "to cleanse". In Pagan times it was burnt as sacred protection against harmful spirits. Lavender was popular in the monastic medicinal gardens of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Gerard in his Sixteenth Century
Herbal said that flowers helped to cure "lovesickness" and all pains and "maladies of the head".
The Victorians lined their hats with it to ward off headaches. In the First World War it was used as an antiseptic for wounds and as a drug to ease psychological pain and to induce sleep.

Julie's Aromatherapy Plant Roadshow - Peppermint

Peppermint (Mentha Piperita)

Peppermint is believed to help improve concentration and clarity of thought.

Evidence from the Egyptian tombs dating back to 300BC shows that the benefits of Peppermint have long been recognised.

The name Peppermint is derived from the Latin word 'mente' meaning 'thought' because the Romans used Peppermint as a tonic for the brain.

Safety note: Non toxic
Skin: Ringworm, Scabies
Mind: Slows thought process, improves focus, memory aid, helps with inability to speak fluently Body: Stress related sensation of pain, headaches, flatulence, nausea, burping, stress related digestive problems (irritable bowel syndrome)

Swine Flu - Top tips for natural infection control

Swine flu is a form of influenza that originated in pigs but can be caught by, and spread among, people. The single most effective way to stop or slow the spread of diseases such as Swine Flu is to prevent the spread of germs.

Following recent Government guidelines to tighten up on health and hygiene I've put together my top tips for natural infection control:-

Apply a few drops of premium, therapeutic Tea Tree Oil onto the fabric between bra cups or on your kid's T-Shirt at the neck where it won't show. The heat of your chest causes the Tea Tree to rise so that you are constantly breathing in this amazing oil with its anti-viral and antibacterial powers.

Make your own credit crunch hand sanitiser. Mix 100ml of grain alcohol (vodka). Try Lidl for quality at a low price. Add 10ml of premium quality Tea Tree to the vodka then top up with 25ml of water. Store in a handy spray bottle or soak cotton wool pads and carry them around in a sandwich bag.

Sanitiser room spray – as above but add 5 ml of Geranium to the vodka and top up the mix with 100ml of water. Use in a spray or tie pre-soaked ribbons to the bars of a domestic fan to diffuse into the room.

Toilet seat wipes/door handle wipes/table wipes for when you are out and about. Spray the sanitiser room spray on to the surface and then wipe with disposable baby wipes or previously cut squares of cotton (old t-shirts, shirts and sheets are good)

In the microwave simmer a large dish of boiling water (2 pints) into which you have added 10 drops of Tea Tree and 10 drops of Lemon. After 15 mins remove carefully. Using heavy duty rubber gloves use the fragrant boiling water to wipe all surfaces, door handles and toilet areas throughpout the house. The mix is also good on dusters so that all furniture, mirrors, tiles etc are all coated with this fragrant antiseptic and anti-viral blend. WHEN THE KIDS ARE OUT I also stand my steaming water in the lounge and hall for the antiseptic fumes to circulate.

In your clothes dryer add a hankey onto which 6 drops of Tea Tree, 6 drops of Lemongrass and 6 drops of Geranium have been added – clothes smell fab and are naturally protective.

In the bottom of wardrobes stand a dish of salt (200g) into which 12 drops of Tea Tree, 6 drops of Citronella and 6 drops of Palmarosa have been added – natural protection against infection (and moths).

Add 2 drops of Tea Tree to each measure of shampoo or shower gel – or buy our Tea Tree range which includes handwash, shampoo and bath & shower gels

In the drum/bag of your vacuum cleaner put a cotton wool ball that has been soaked in a mixture of Tea Tree, Mint and Lemon for a mega-refreshing, antispetic scent.

Mix coursely ground salt with Tea Tree, Bergamot and Grapefruit (2 drops of each per heaped tablespoonful of salt) and sprinkle lightly on carpets and rugs – leave overnight and then hoover up.

Finally I always make sure the kids have a supply of antiseptic tissues. Add Tea Tree and Lemon onto 2 dozen sugar lumps, place these and a supply of tissues into a clean, sealed biscuit tin. The tissues are then impregnated with the Tea Tree and Lemon without risking the oil coming directly into contact with delicate skin or eyes.

If you have any further questions please just email at julie@potions.co.uk. For them it's not so much enthusiasm but bad temper and a level of conflict so high that no normal boss would entertain them. Sir Alan Sugar is hardly normal and this is after all entertainment, but conflict can be a real problem in the workplace.

I see the results in terms of stress-related symptoms in the clinic everyday. Clearly it is a management issue but I do have some professional recommendations that may work in your office. Alan Sugar are you ready for this?

In the office use an electric vaporiser or just tie a ribbon to a domestic fan. Each morning add 2 drops of exotic Ylang Ylang to soothe anger and irritability, 2 drops of warm, strong Cedarwood (yes Cedarwood NOT Sandalwood!!) for courage and fortitude, rich zesty Palmarosa to banish negative energy and Grapefruit to detox mind and body. Another fabulous blend would be Frankincense to calm anxiety, Green Mandarin to help restore fragile self esteem and Geranium to calm the emotions.

In the evening add any of these oils to your bath and to aid sleep combine with Chamomile. I adore Chamomile as in the language of flowers it means “the oil of patience in adversity”. It was one of the Saxons nine sacred herbs and I think there is nothing better to calm sleep blocking stressful thoughts.

Post-marathon and Race for Life advice!

..wasn’t it brilliant so inspirational. It inspired me to go out for a jog. I had become a bit disillusioned after plotting my regular route on planmyrun.com only to find the calories I worked off on the route would barely cover a glass of wine. Anyway, after watching the marathon my enthusiasm is renewed and I have signed up for both Race for Life events in Ipswich with my nine year old daughter. My 6 year old son is desperate to come too but the thought of wearing pink and being with all girls is a serious barrier. I have no doubt it will be a challenge but nothing like the marathon and unlikely to lead to any of the following conditions. If you've just run the marathon you may like to follow my natural advice to ease some of those aches and pains...

Blisters:
Bathe the feet in a bowl of hot, salt water with 2 drops each of Tea-Tree and Benzoin. You can also use our famous Split Finger and Heel Relief Balm (15g £4.99).

Aching feet:
Add marbles or pebbles to the bowl and gently roll the feet over them to maximise circulation and restore mobility.

Cracked dehydrated lips:
Lip Relief Balm with Tea-Tree, Spearmint and Propolis (15g £4.99).

Painful calves:
Massage with the following blend. 1 tablespoonful of Almond Oil, 2 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Marjoram and 2 drops of Orange or try my Joint & Muscle Ease Massage Oil (200ml £9.99).

Grazed nipples:
1 drop of Tea-Tree in 1 teaspoonful of Olive Oil – apply morning and night for speedy healing.

Painful knees or hips:
Using a small domestic paintbrush paint on Almond Oil with Chamomile and Ginger to the affected area. (1 tablespoonful of Almond Oil with 3 drops of Chamomile and 3 drops of Ginger). Lay a square of cling film over the top of the affected area and then cover with towels (if you have a microwave wheat bag add that). Allow the heat and oils to penetrate for at least thirty minutes. Very gently massage any remaining surface oil in to the skin.

Overwhelming physical fatigue that doesn’t lift after 2 or three days:

The marathon event is a culmination of months of training at the very edge of endurance. Add a day job and a stressful life and it is hardly surprising that the body can seem to stall in terms of its normal restorative processes. My professional recommendation is Frankincense to deepen breathing and restore rhythm to the mind and body, Lime for its fatigue-busting properties and Spearmint to refresh and revive. Add to the bath or mix with fragrance free shower gel or choose Potions Anti-fatigue Bath & Shower Gel (200ml £8.99), Massage Oil (200ml £9.99) or Fatigue Relief Essential Relief Balm (15g £4.99).

Coughs, colds and other low grade infections:

Myrhh, Lemon and Tea-Tree. Blend 9 drops total into a tablespoonful of Almond Oil for massage or into a tablespoonful of fragrance free shampoo.

Congratulations to all who took part and my total admiration for finishing not to mention the money you raised. Oh and thank you for inspiring me to get the running shoes on and train for Race for Life with my kids.

Thankyou
Julie

Don't miss our Bank Holiday Special

If you're not heading to the beach this bank holiday why not relax and indulge at home and take advantage of our exclusive bank holiday special. It has a balancing effect to bring dry or oily skin to a state of equilibrium. The Japanese use Sandalwood in their worship of and communication with Buddha ,whilst the Muslims believe that Sandalwood will purify body and soul and carry prayers heavenward.

Geranium (pelargonium graveolens)
Geranium has a close affinity with the female system and is a popular oil for the aromatherapy beginner as well as the professional. It helps to treat hormonally unbalanced skin, broken capillaries, blemishes and bruises and is a gentle insect repellent. It also works on the mind to ease grinding teeth, nervous tension, mood swings, irritability, anger and female rages and can also help with soothing period-related pain and problems, settling the cycle after miscarriage or preparing the body to conceive. Geranium is emotionally soothing and has a fabulous scent that makes it ideal for room fragrancing.

Rose (rosa centifolia)
Rose Oil, which is extracted from the petals by distillation or solvents, is in my personal opinion beyond compare for treating stress related conditions, particularly depression and anxiety. It has a very gentle but strong uplifting effect on the psyche and a balancing effect which can help individuals to “see problems in proportion." Many aromatherapists believe that Rose can mimic the effect of hormones so it is often used to treat psychological problems linked to female bodily functions such menstruation or child birth, e.g. PMS or post natal depression.

What Sir Alan and Paula didn't know about Cedarwood!

Last night's episode of The Apprentice was particularly relevant to me and the Potions Business. How exciting for them to develop a natural toiletry brand from scratch! Shame they didn't have us on hand to advise them on their choice of essential oils.

So what didn't Sir Alan and his Apprentices know about Cedarwood? Yes, it is much cheaper than Sandalwood (what a fatal mistake Paula!!). Our Sandalwood is £17.75 for 5ml whereas our Cedarwood is £4.65. Why? because Cedarwood is a sustainably farmed and fair traded hardwood from farmed stock. Sandalwood could argually be involved in deforestation of the hardwood forests. I use Cedarwood as it is the oil of endless life, it is about strength and fortitude. Cedarwood is what David anointed himself with before he fought Goliath.

Applications: Cedarwood has a therapeutic effect on the respiratory system and is helpful in all related complaints. It calms the mind and body and can therefore be helpful in treating stress related asthma. It can relieve the pain of arthritis and rheumatism and it can help settle irritated skin conditions.

Historical Note: Solomon’s Chariot was built of Cedarwood which has historically been used to protect and extend the lives of anyone in contact with it. It is mentioned frequently in the Bible as a symbol of physical and mental strength. Cedar is often known as the “Holy Tree of Life”, partly because it has a distinctive odour which has a powerful and stimulating effect on the psyche, which is ideal for individuals preparing for prayer and meditation.

It is a physically robust wood with a scent that repels termites and beetles. It has been used since ancient civilisation to produce storage boxes for treasured possessions or important documents. Cedarwoods is impenetrable that’s why it was used as the original black box in ships and why it is used for coffins and temples.

Cedarwood is in many of my products, including best selling Divinity Cologne, and is one of my favourite oils. For those of you blending yourself I recommend Cedarwood, Green Mandarin and Palmarosa.

Shame on you Paula - liked the Rock Poole concept, but with a mistake like that who can blame Sir Alan?

Regards

Julie

Spring clean your skin!

After one of the coldest winters in recent years we're finally seeing the first signs of Spring. And, what's more, we have the Easter holidays to look forward to! We all know that the harsh effects of winter can leave our skin very dry and lifeless, so I've put together a few home spa ideas that will help freshen up your skin, brighten up your appearance and give you that much deserved opportunity to relax and indulge over the holiday period!

Spring clean your skin!

Face and neck treatment for deep moisturising and intense wrinkle repair:
Place 15 ml of pure Almond Oil (1 tablespoonful) into a small dish and stand it in a bowl of boiling water until the oil reaches skin temperature. Whilst the oil is warming apply 2-3 face cloths (that have been soaked in warm water and rung out) to the area of skin to be treated. Leave in place for 1-2 minutes until the skin is slightly flushed (showing that surface circulation has been increased). Remove the oil and blend in up to 4 drops of Rose, Chamomile and/or Frankincense Essential Oil. Paint the blend all over the face, neck and lips (with a large flat cosmetic brush or natural bristle pastry brush) using upward strokes and avoiding the under eye area. Pay particular attention to the jaw line, the throat and the cheeks. If your skin is particularly dry the therapeutic blend will disappear, in which case keep adding more until you are left with a wet surface. At this stage place two cotton wool pads soaked in cold water over the eyes and lie back and relax for at least 30 minutess. Finally, remove the eye pads and massage any extra moisture into the skin. For best results leave the skin free of make up for the next 24 hours. If the skin to be treated is particularly sensitive then patch test the oil blend near the hairline before treatment. If the skin is excessively dry, carry out the treatment every 24 hours for three sessions then once weekly. For normal skin once per month will be sufficient.

For the ultimate treat why not enjoy this home facial whilst relaxing in the bath - try Potions & Possibilities Ultra Relaxing Bath Oil Blend for an extra luxurious and moisturising treat!

Hand Treatment to moisturise hands, soften cuticles, strengthen nails and treat hard skin:
Prepare a comfortable seat at a table in a warm room and spread a towel over the table to protect it. Remove any nail polish or jewellery. Place 30ml of pure Almond Oil (2 tablespoonfuls) into a small dish and stand in a bowl of boiling water until the oil reaches skin temperature. Remove the oil and blend in up to 10 drops of Lavender and/or Ylang Ylang with Tea Tree (suggested blend is maximum of 4 drops Lavender, 3 drops Ylang Ylang and 3 drops Tea Tree).
Treating one hand at a time (unless you have a helper) spread the blend all over one hand taking care to work it between the fingers, down underneath the nails, into the cuticles and up past the wrists. There is no need to rub it in just smooth it on. If your hands are particularly dry the therapeutic blend will disappear, in which case keep adding more until you are left with a wet surface. Pull on a polythene glove or sandwich bag and your hand in the bag/glove (removing any air). Then wrap up in a hand towel as if you were wrapping wet hair. Relax for 20-30mins during which your hand should start to heat up. If you have wrapped the hand securely then you will find that due to the increased circulation and moisture penetration the skin feels quite warm and looks slightly flushed when you unwrap. In the unlikely event of any oil being left on the surface simply massage it in. Repeat the treatment on the other hand. If you suffer from aches and pains in your fingers (arthritis or key board strain) then increase the proportion of pain killing Lavender and consider adding Chamomile (nature’s steroid).

Therapeutic Foot Treatment to relax the mind, rejuvenate tired feet and reduce hard skin:
Fill a washing-up bowl with ½” coarse sea salt then lay 6 smooth pebbles of varying sizes on top. Fill the bowl with hot water and add up to 8 drops of Essential Oil. I recommend Chamomile, Peppermint and Lavender. Mix with a tablespoon of milk first to help the oils disperse in the water. Then, sit, relax and soak your feet in the bowl. Press the soles of the feet onto the salt on the bottom to gently stimulate the circulation. If you wish to buff away hard skin then shuffle or rotate feet. Next, rest the feet on the stones, press them into the arches, roll them along the soles, try to pick them up with the toes and push them around the bowl to relieve pain, stimulate sluggish circulation and soothe tired muscles. When the water cools empty some out and replace with more hot. After 30 minutes remove the feet and dry with a towel. Moisturise the feet and ankles thoroughly with Potions & Possibilities' Foot Relief Cream and relax for at least an hour preferably with feet raised. Tip: For athletes foot or “sweaty feet” also include Tea Tree Essential Oil. For extra-dry and cracked, sore heels try Potions' soothing Finger & Heel Relief Balm.

So relax, indulge and have a lovely Easter!

Julie

Aromatherapy advice for London Marathon runners

AS runners complete their final few weeks of training for the London Marathon, I've put together my top professional tips and natural remedies to help boost runners’ performance and ease that inevitable post-training discomfort!

My sister is a national level triathlete and fell runner and has run the marathon several times so I am used to being asked for advice on this subject by her and her friends as well as clients via the Potions & Possibilities website. Apart from the practical problems which I’ll discuss below, one of the biggest issues is training and working really hard at the same time, to the point where you become tired and it starts to compromise your immune system.

In normal circumstances, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Intense physical exertion however can sometimes compromise the immune system and lead to illness and infection. This is why athletes and marathon runners routinely use Tea Tree essential oil, which is a well known immunostimulant.

Tea Tree is renowned as the most powerful antiseptic know to man and has a natural affinity with the skin and immune system. I am just about to launch a new Tea Tree range which, as well as being wonderfully therapeutic for general use, is ideal for Marathon runners in training. The range includes Tea Tree & Mint Foot Spray – the ultimate natural refresher. Tea Tree & Mint Bath & Shower Gel for stimulation, Tea Tree & Lime Bath & Shower Gel for concentration and energy, Tea Tree & Lavender Bath & Shower Gel for pre-race nerves and Tea Tree & Geranium Shampoo for Tea Tree with a touch of luxury!

In addition to using Tea Tree, I also have advice for the more practical problems experienced:-

To keep your spirits up and remain mentally strong during training I’d recommend Potions & Possibilities’ Courage Balm (15g £4.99) with Cedarwood for strength and courage, Jasmine to calm the nerves and Chamomile, which in the language of flowers, stands for ‘patience in adversity’. The balm should be applied to the pulse points as required.

During a marathon, every moving body part that can chafe will chafe. And nothing is more irritating and painful than itchy skin rubbed raw. Many runners use Vaseline in sensitive areas but I’d also recommend adding 3 drops of Tea Tree and 1 drop of Benzoin to every tablespoon of Vaseline to help stop the soreness and soothe the itching. Alternatively our Finger & Heel Relief Balm (15g £4.99), which contains Tea Tree and Benzoin, can be used not only on sore feet but also in more sensitive areas such as the groin and underarm.

If your training schedule involves dieting, try adding a few drops of Fennel to your running vest. Fennel Oil has also long been used as a slimming aid - Roman soldiers used to chew fennel seeds on long marches to ward off hunger pains and enhance their fortitude and willpower. I make up a cheery blend of Lime, aniseedy Fennel and a touch of mind soothing Frankincense to help reduce my intake.

If you’re worried about wearing running shorts and exposing your dimply thighs try mixing our Detox Massage Oil (200ml £9.99) with sea salt (or baby rice for sensitive skin) and massaging into the thighs whilst in the shower. Also, leave out the fabric conditioner from your towel wash and regularly rub your thighs vigorously with the non-softened towels – you will soon notice the difference and save money on your laundry too!

It is a well known fact that most marathon runners go through the “wall” at about the halfway mark – they feel it physically and also mentally to the point where some are know to simply pull out. The “wall” is a formidable challenge for most marathon runners. I recommend a technique that harnesses the power of smell which is the most powerful and primitive of all the senses.

You need to choose a stimulating essential oil that you like the scent of - my suggestions for women are Green Mandarin, Grapefruit or Lemon Eucalyptus and for men, Rosemary, Basil, Lemon Eucalyptus or Spearmint. On your training runs, tune into your mind and body and identify when you are feeling euphoric and on top form physically and mentally. At that stage take out of your pocket a tissue that has had several drops of your chosen oil on it and smell it. Repeat regularly (only when you are feeling really good and on form) and as you do there will be a physical and psychological association between those smells and feeling on form. During the marathon when you hit the “wall” take out the tissue, smell it and you will be amazed how your sense of smell can have a remarkable effect in terms of re-energising you both physically and mentally.

To aid your warm up and help loosen your muscles I suggest mixing Almond Oil with Ginger, Tea Tree and Spearmint (2 drops of each essential oil per tablespoon of Almond Oil). This will not only help warm up the muscles but the oil will also offer some protection against chafing and wind burn. Always spot test the skin first and remember that this is NOT an alternative to you’re your physical warm up and stretch routine!

For stiff and painful joints and muscles I recommend adding 3 drops of Chamomile (nature's steroid) to your after-training bath along with 3 drops of Lavender for the pain and 3 drops of Frankincense to encourage deep breathing and relaxation. If you’re cold after training you can also add Rosemary to warm the muscles and joints. Add the oils to a tablespoon of milk before adding to the bath to help them disperse. Alternatively try Potions & Possibilities Joint Ease Clinical Bath Oil (150ml £10.99) with Lavender, Rose, Sandalwood, Chamomile, Bergamot and Evening Primrose, our Joint & Muscle Relief Massage Blend (200ml £9.99) or our Heavy Duty Relief Gel (60g £7.99) which can both be massaged into the affected areas.

Potions & Possibilities are innovative producers of natural toiletries and aromatherapy health and wellbeing products. The mysteries of the birth room are now open to all so why not at the other end of life?

In the clinic and on the website I am constantly asked about how to comfort someone at the end and when they are seriously ill, particularly if they have lapsed into unconsciousness. There are many theories of what the patient can hear or feel at the end however I think no one is in any doubt that there are differing levels of consciousness and that the sense of touch and smell last long after speech has been lost.

Here is one of my most commonly asked questions, along with my professional advice which I hope will provide some level of comfort and reassurance in such difficult times:-

Question:
My mother is in hospital now and close to the end. She is lapsing in and out of consciousness and I am spending long periods of time with her. I want her to know that I am there and that I care for her and love her even though I am not even sure she can hear me. I try to involve her beloved grandchildren but as teenagers I can see that they are uncomfortable.

Mrs K Rochester

Answer:
Visiting a seriously ill person can be emotionally painful and difficult, particulary if the normal patterns of conversation are impossible. In such a situation you’ll probably feel that you need to communicate on another non-verbal level. The purpose of my following suggestions is to remove the pressure "to chat" and shift the focus of the visit from a passive conversation to a proactive caring interaction. This can make even the most difficult visit relaxing and rewarding for both patient and the visitor.

Brush the hair (or scalp if they have lost their hair) with a natural bristle brush or soft baby’s hair brush. It feels comfortable and stimulates the flow of blood to the scalp to improve circulation to the brain and it can increase consciousness. For women, and often men, the act of brushing their hair is a key part of grooming and critical to their sense of of dignity. Although the reality is that there may be no hair to brush, the ritual can still be enormously therapeutic.

Treat the patient to a footbath. Use warm water and use pebbles, sand or marbles in the bottom. The need to wriggle the toes becomes almost irresistible and can stimulate circulation in the lower limbs, especially useful when mobility is compromised. It can also help with muscle and joint stiffness.

Apply hand cream to the hands and wrists, paying particular attention to the palms of the hands and avoiding joints. Not only is this comforting, but it can also stimulate energy points in the hands. The traditional scent of our Luxury Rose or Lavender Hand Cream may be particularly soothing for more elderly patients.

Look to use aromatherapy products that have a positive effect. For many older people, Orange has a particularly nostalgic scent, reminding them of childhood, so add a few drops of Orange Oil to the bath or a body lotion or put Orange Oil on a sugar lump and add to their talcum powder container.

Lip Balm. Cracked lips can cause both distress and discomfort. A therapeutic balm such as the Potions & Possibilities Lip Relief Balm applied regularly can improve the condition immeasurably.

A manicure is a lovely way to help relax the patient. Trimming and filing the nails (they often overgrow in the hospital environment), massaging cream into the hands and feet are all good ways to make contact and show that you care without the need for verbal communication.

Treat the patient’s itchy skin, often a side-effect of morphine treatment, with gentle natural ingredients. Try our cooling Lavender Spray designed for the body.

Read poetry out loud. Whilst newspapers and magazines can be over-stimulating and can create anxiety, poetry can evoke memories and create a relaxed environment. Try something like AA Milne’s “Now we are Six” for nostalgia or something associated with a favourite hobby, such as gardening, travel or sailing.

A dry mouth is a common side effect of drugs and verbal immobility. A small section of tangerine, gently squeezed so that a few drops of juice enter the mouth, stimulates saliva production and can help ease the condition.

Please email me directly if you would like any further information or have any particular questions that you feel I may be able to help with.

Best Wishes
Julie

Mother's Day Thoughts

Mother's Day is always an important day for my Business and I. I love helping people with that special present. Whether it's a small child in the shop with £1.50 to spend on a seconds soap or a businessman buying a £100 selection to be sent half way round the world, I love hearing about their mums and what they mean to them. I enjoy the gifts being sent to places far and wide, taking the personal messages and hearing how much our special treats mean.

Poignantly the man, who having been adopted 40 yrs ago, chose the New Mum Bath Oil (designed for post natal but does it matter?) to take as a present when he met up with his newly found Mum thanks to the internet.

Another incident to make me feel very emotional was the customer finally pregnant after years of trying. Her Mum had spent her life savings paying for the IVF and she wanted a special way of telling her Mum that the much wanted pregnancy had finally arrived. A bottle of 'Special Grandmother' Bath Oil was sent with a hand written tag to say "thankyou". I only found out when the daughter was still buying the Bath Oil 8 years later and came in the shop with her Mum. The Grandma told me that the treasured first bottle, long since emptied, was stowed carefully in her treasure box.

This year Mother's Day has been significant for me. My children now 6 and 9 actually understand that Mother's Day is more than going out with daddy and buying a soft toy together. They made me a fantastic poster and bought me a book token, showing that they had actually thought about what I would like rather than what they liked. I think in parenting terms, that first time when you notice they are capable of seeing things from another point of view and can appreciate other peoples needs and feelings, is as prouder moment as when they first walk or say "Mummy". Read their wonderfully thoughtful poster poem below:-

M for making me happy
O for helping others
T for teaching me stuff
H for helping me
E for exiting times
R for realising (I think they meant recognising) my feelings
S for making me smile
D for giving me nice days
A for being my angel
Y for me and you

..on a more poignant note Hazel the first lady I ever employed at Potions, who used to pack your mail order parcels with me in my kitchen at home, lost her gorgeous 17 year old daughter Sarah to cancer this week. I can't start to imagine her grief and I know that Mother's Day for her and others who have lost children must be beyond anything anyone can bear. Every other sentence included news about "my girls" - they were the centre of her life. I can hardly think of any words to say to her and her husband and her other lovely daughter, who has bravely continued with her university studies throughout the devastating illness. I cannot think of how to help them at this awful time, other than to offer to muck out her horses and take a casserole round.

In sadness I find great solace in poetry and this resonates – not sure who wrote it - do any of you know?

I Do Believe

There is nothing I can do to make her come back.
There are no words I can say that can replace her words you long to hear.
There are no answers I can give that will satisfy your questions.
There is not another soul I can introduce to you that will ever replace hers.
And there is no love I can offer you that will ever replace the love you shared.

I cannot promise your broken heart will ever be complete.
I will not say that it could have been worse.
I will not deny that it was a tragedy.
I will not lie and tell you she will be back,
She never really left.

I do promise you she hears you when you speak.

I will say she loves you no matter what the distance.
I will not deny she is in a better place.
And will not lie she is waiting to greet you someday.

She is every step you take.
She is everything you do.
She is the air you breathe.
She is every beat of your heart.
She is like the wind,
you cannot see her ... but you will always feel her.

In the Academy Mother's Day brings a boost to business and for the next two weeks we are booked solidly with Mother's Day Pamper Packages. It is a sign of our times that some Mums book for themselves ("if I don’t treat myself no one else will"), others are treated by husbands and kids ( we had to ask two 17 year old boys, buying the surgery free face lift for their mum, whether they had asked their Mum in case she took it the wrong way! "Oh yes" they said "she circled it in your brochure", which they proudly showed us), but most bask in the glow of someone loving them and celebrating their status as a Mother.

In the clinic Mother's Day brings an increase in demand for holistic services too. For those who have lost their Mums, Mother's Day can be a trigger for depression and overwhelming sadness. I recommend essential oils of Cedarwood (for courgare and fortitude), Chamomile (which in the language of flowers stands for "patience in adversity"), and Green Mandarin (gently uplifting for the spirits).

Sadly not everyone has a positive relationship with their Mum and often clients describe their relationship as "complex". I think that’s a kinder and more forgiving word than difficult. Therapy is a good place to start in terms of dealing with the mix of emotions this generates. If you wish to treat yourself with essential oils then I recommend Palmarosa (cleansing for negativity), Frankincense (soothes anxiety and breaks the cycle of anxious thought) and Grapefruit (a detox for mind and body). For something made up try Detox Bath & Shower Gel (£8.99 for 200ml) or Courage Relief Balm (£4.99 for 15g).

Guilt is a feature in many of the dysfunctional relationships – guilt that they didn’t have the perfect relationship. Although the responsibility for establishing a good maternal relationship unquestionably has to rest with the adult, I am constantly amazed how many women go though life carrying the guilt that somehow the broken relationship was their fault. If I am massaging or offering an NLP treatment in these circumstances I will always use May Chang, the oil of tranquility and the antidote to guilt in aromatherapy terms. I have many clients who have had a positive result with my Divinity Natural Perfume (£19.99 for 50ml). It has low calming notes and settles the mind.

On a lighter hearted note I like the following quote on guilt. "My Mother could make anyone feel guilty. She used to receive letters of apology from people she didn’t know" (Joan Rivers).Or, talking of complexity, what about; "Blaming Mother is just a negative way of clinging on to her" (Nancy Friday, author).

Whether your relationship with your mother is one of loss (bereavement), emotional complexity or unadulterated love, I hope you had the very best Mother's Day. And, a big thanks to all of you who ordered your Mother’s Day gifts from us – thank you for shopping with us and thank you for buying British.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Julie

p.s. Mr RODRICK from London (some men love to research the best poss present whilst others just come into the shop and say "give us something for the missus") and several others asked what were our best selling gifts for Mums were. Dropping temperatures and a lack of sunlight weakens our immune system which means we pick up bugs more easily! So, for your best chance of keeping healthy for the rest of the winter, wrap up warm, get as much sunlight as possible and try some of my natural remedies to help keep those winter ailments at bay!

Arthritis
People with arthritis may experience their condition worsening in the winter months with the cold causing even achier bones and joints. For smaller areas such as knees, fingers, hips and neck use Potions & Possibilities Heavy Duty Relief Gel. For all over use try Potions & Possibilities Joint and Muscle Bath Oil, our Joint and Muscle Massage Oil or our aromatherapy Microwave Wheat Cushions with Lavender Oil.

You could also use Bergamot and Lavender Essential Oils in a burner or on a tissue behind a radiator to fragrance your room.

Bronchitis
Bronchitis symptoms can be caused by viruses or bacteria and is a sign that your immune system is underperforming. Tea-Tree in the bath or in a burner would be my first suggestion. Lemon is also anti-viral and antibacterial but is inappropriate for the bath if you have sensitive skin. Diet and lifestyle issues should be considered, particularly any stress. My favourite ‘de-stressing oils’ include Bergamot, Geranium, May Chang, Frankincense, Clary Sage and Green Mandarin. Any of these works well with Tea-Tree or in combination.

Benzoin is also a particularly good oil for chest problems and Melissa (Lemon Balm) can also help. Avoid the ‘hot’ oils that are likely to sensitise the mucous membranes of your respiratory tract, like Eucalyptus and Menthol/Mint. Vicks and Olbas Oil both include these ingredients. For a ready-made solution, try Potions & Possibilities Immune System Tonic for the bath.

Circulation problems
These are very common in winter, especially with people whose mobility is limited. Ginger is one of many oils that may help. However, Thyme is stronger and likely to be more effective.

Raynaud's is a circulatory disorder that causes the fingers and toes - and sometimes ears and nose - to become cold and painful and to turn white, blue and finally bright red. To help relieve the symptoms you could try our Heavy Duty Relief Gel massaged into the affected areas.

Chilblains
Chilblains are swellings, usually on the fingers and toes. They occur in cold weather when small blood vessels beneath the skin narrow to help keep blood warm: if they narrow too much, insufficient blood and oxygen reaches the skin. Chilblains may become infected if the skin breaks down. Try a blend of Chamomile (natures’ steriod) and Tea-Tree to help stop itching.

Coldsores
Are are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. Herpes Simplex is ‘systemic’, which means it is in all of us - usually harmlessly. However, when the immune system is compromised, it can lead to highly infectious outbreaks of blisters/sores. Tea-Tree, if used regularly in the bath or on the skin will control the symptoms but if outbreaks are frequent a GP’s advice should be sought.

Nasal congestion
For nasal congestion, a few drops of Chamomile, Geranium and Lavender on a tissue inside your pillowcase or nearby can be beneficial. Chamomile has a natural anti-inflammatory action, Lavender is antibacterial and Geranium is balancing for the hormones and relaxing. Three other oils that may help are Benzoin, Tea-Tree and Myrrh. Avoid ‘hot’ oil such as Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Basil and camphoric treatments such as ‘Vicks’ or ‘Olbas Oil’ as they are stimulants and, in the long term, can irritate the mucous membranes of the body.

Sinusitis
Potions & Possibilities Headease and Relief Balm can be used as needed on the face to treat sinusitis (subject to spot testing to ensure that it agrees with your skin). I would also suggest that when running a bath you run hot water first to create a steamy atmosphere. Add Tea-Tree and Lavender (six drops of each) to the bath (not directly under the tap). Leave the steamy atmosphere to develop for five minutes or so, and then add cold to suit and bathe for at least 10 minutes. Lavender is antibacterial and a painkiller, whilst Tea-Tree is anti-viral and also an immune system tonic, which will help your condition.

Using Your Oils

Once you've decided on your blend of oils use one of the following methods for treatment:-

Mix 4-10 drops with milk (to aid dispersion) to the bath.

Put 4 - 6 drops in water on top of an Aromatherapy burner.

Add 2 drops to a tablespoon full of Sweet Almond Oil and massage affected area or back.

Add 2 drops to a tablespoonful of fragrance free shampoo or bath and shower gel.

Put 2 drops onto a pillow or night clothes. Or, put the oils on a tissue and breathe in the aroma or put the oils on a hanky and lay on a nearby radiator.

Note: For children it is important to adapt the quantities according to weight. The above guidelines are based on the treatment of an individual weighing 10 stones (64 kilos) and the quantities need adjusting down according to the weight of the child. Not all oils are suitable for use during pregnancy.

I hope you've found this information useful. Cheaper than a night out and hopefully more soothing, you can enjoy a romantic evening for two in the comfort of your own home!

To help you get in the mood I've suggested my favourite, sensual oils below:-

Indulge in a relaxing bath for two or a romantic massage with May Chang Essential Oil to promote relaxation, Green Mandarin for its gentle, energising properties, Cedarwood to slow down and deepen breathing, and Ylang Ylang for its exotic fragrance and aphrodisiac powers. Add 2 drops of each oil to a warm bath (mixing with milk first to help the oils disperse) or make your own massage blend by adding 2 drops of each oil per tablespoon of Almond Oil.

Alternatively try Potions & Possibilities Ultra Relaxing Luxury Bath Oil (£12.71), hand-blended with Rose for calming, Sandalwood for lifting the spirits and Chamomile and Lavender to promote rest and relaxation. With its warm, exotic and sensual, smoky scent, Cedarwood has been known since antiquity for imparting strength and courage. It is believed to be the oil that David anointed himself with before fighting Goliath.

To help you detox the atmosphere make your own alternative to Pot Pourri by fragrancing and colouring Sea Salt. Mix the Essential Oils of Lemongrass, Geranium and Vanilla into a base of Sea Salt (table salt will work but sea salt gives an interesting visual effect). Add in a few drops of food colouring, if desired, and put the scented salt in the bottom of a shallow bowl. Cover the salt with some pine cones, shells or pebbles on the surface.

Lemongrass is a stimulating oil so it is excellent for combating fatigue. Its pungent scent will also help override the smell of stale tobacco. Geranium is added for its subtle floral notes and stress beating qualities. A touch of Vanilla is added which is profoundly relaxing and also acts as a natural fixative that helps to hold the scent longer.

Depending on the heat and humidity and the amount of smoke in the atmosphere the salt will need to be agitated most days to release more oil. When the scent is exhausted completely (up to two weeks) then refresh or consider the rules of crystal therapy. Crystals (salt crystals in this case) are believed to attract and absorb negative energy as well as unhealthy chemicals to their surface. Big crystals are therefore washed regularly to ‘cleanse’ them. As a therapist I do not subscribe to crystal healing, however I do think there is reason to consider throwing away your salt and starting again on a regular basis.

If you reach for a cigarette when you're feeling stressed, keep our Relaxation Balm (£4.88) handy to help curb those cravings. Alternatively try one of the following stress relieving blends in an oil burner:-

Day time use in lounge/office - 1 drop Spearmint, 4 drops Bergamot, 1 drop Frankincense It is believed to be the oil that David anointed himself with before fighting Goliath.

Need an energy boost?

If you're all partied out and feeling tired all the time, try our Fatigue Relief Balm (£4.88) with Grapefruit, Lemongrass and Geranium, or our invigorating Anti-Fatigue Bath & Shower Gel (£7.82) with Lime, Ginger, Lemongrass, Cinammon, Cedarwood and Ginseng.

Get Back in Focus

Loss of concentration and focus is something that many of us suffer from after the Christmas festivities. My favourite blend includes Spearmint which helps focus the mind and clears the head, Green Mandarin which is a gentle energiser and either Violet or Neroli as a tonic for the nerves. In a burner (not in the bath or for massage) a touch of Lime will help to further counteract the mental confusion and fatigue which so often blocks effective concentration.
For ready made solutions try our Concentration Relief Balm (£4.88) with Palmarosa, Green Mandarin and Violet.

Confidence and Willpower

If you're lacking in self confidence and want to boost your willpower try a blend of May Chang for courage and confidence, Cedarwood for strength, Lavender for mental calm and Orange Sweet for joy.

Using Your Oils

Once you've decided on your blend of oils use one of the following methods for treatment.

Mix 4-10 drops with milk (to aid dispersion) to the bath.

Add 2 drops to a tablespoon full of Sweet Almond Oil or good quality Olive Oil and massage into the affected area or back.

Add 2 drops to a tablespoonful of fragrance free shampoo or bath and shower gel.

Put 2 drops onto a pillow, onto the front of night clothes or on a handkerchief.

Put 4 - 6 drops in a bowl of water on top of an Aromatherapy burner.

Put the oils on a tissue and breathe in the aroma or put the oils on a hanky and lay on a nearby radiator.

Note: For children it is important to adapt the quantities according to weight. The above guidelines are based on the treatment of an individual weighing 10 stones (64 kilos) and the quantities need adjusting down according to the weight of the child.

Hope you find this useful and please do drop me a line if you have any specific issues or questions.

Happy New Year

Julie

Natural Tips for Looking Good This Christmas

It’s Christmas party season and we all want to look our best in our festive frocks and sexy shoes. To help, I’ve put together my top Home Spa tips for looking good this Christmas.

If you’re going out and you want to look good, get your skin looking good first!

For skin that glows naturally, alternate invigorating showers, using a rough surfaced wash cloth, with relaxing baths with a stimulating blend of pure essential oils. Add 3 drops of Green Mandarin and Spearmint and 1 drop of Rosemary to the bath to calm any anxiety, lift the spirits and stimulate a really healthy glow.

For silky smooth skin exfoliate to remove the dead cells that give your skin that dull lifeless appearance. There are a huge range of fashionable salt scrubs on the market and if you have a youthful, elastic skin these are great. However, for those of us with a more mature, sensitive skin then they can be a little harsh. Try making your own body scrub instead with 50% Sea Salt and 50% Oatmeal. Mix to a paste with Olive Oil and apply to towel dried skin in a circular motion using your fingers. Using your fingers rather than a cloth or brush is important because different areas of skin have different levels of sensitivity and your fingers will give you full control. With an implement you may overdo it leaving your skin feeling tight or even grazed. The Oatmeal is very high in Vitamin E which has a rejuvenating effect on the skin and will counteract any harshness from the salt.

Look and feel sleek and svelte in that little black dress - Banish Puffiness. Areas of the skin such as the abdomen, upper arms and ankles can appear to have a soft puffy texture. I recommend essential oils known for their detoxing effect and stimulating influence on the circulation. Try Geranium for its diuretic effect and Palmarosa for its stimulating character and beneficial effect on the skin. Add 2-4 drops of essential oil to a tablespoonful of good quality base oil such as Almond Oil. Cutting down on caffeine rich drinks i.e. coffee, tea and cola can help as well as regular exercise.

Sexy heels will look great on smooth, soft soles - For cracked heels, use a pumice stone or file to remove the hard skin and soak the heels in Almond Oil with 2 drops of Tea Tree and 1 drop of Benzoin added per tablespoonful of oil. Alternatively try Potions & Possibilities Finger and Heel Relief Balm.

Kissable Mistletoe Lips - Get a good night’s sleep, drink lots of water and make sure you balm your lips the day before a big night out. Try Potions & Possiblities Essential Lip Relief Balm, then exfoliate the lips with an earbud – it helps to get rid of the little flakes of skin.

I hope you've find these ideas useful. If you have any specific questions please don't hesitate to email me direct.

Merry Christmas

Julie

Keeping the Credit Crunch out of the bedroom!

If your sex life is suffering as much as your bank account in these difficult economic climes, why not try my top tips for spicing things up and boosting your libido the natural way.

We all know that sex can be an effective stress reliever but unfortunately a drop in libido and feeling ‘tired all the time' is a known side effect of stress. With 'Credit Crunch Stress' looming over each and every one of us, a sensual massage could be just what the doctor ordered!

Choose from some of the essential oils listed below to make your own massage blends. Add 12 drops of essential oil to 3 tablespoons of a good quality carrier oil such as Potions & Possibilities Pure Almond Oil 200ml £5.49.

To beat that 'tired all the time' and lethargic feeling, try fatigue busting blends such as stimulating Fennel and Lime, mysterious and uplifting Black Pepper, Green Mandarin and Patchouli or Spearmint and Rosemary for maximum get up and go!

For a more sensual, relaxing blend use Ylang Ylang for its exotic fragrance and aphrodisiac powers, Frankincense to slow down and deepen the breathing, and Lime for energy and stamina (add 2 drops of each essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil).

If you'd like a ready to use massage blend why not try the Potions & Possibilities Fatigue Relief Blend or Relaxation Blend - 200ml RRP £9.99.

Massage tips

Slow hands
If the massage strokes resemble high speed car-cleaning strokes then far from promoting relaxation the recipient will feel skin irritation and heightened awareness of pain. Put on some slow music and ask the recipient to take long deep breaths in and out and match the speed of the massage to the speed of the breaths.

Full hand contact
Hands that are taken off the skin in between strokes again heighten the senses and awareness of pain (there is always an element of surprise as the hands once again make contact with the skin. It is commonly described as "setting nerves on edge"). Just slide the hands gently into position without ever losing contact - even if it means stroking across clothes or hair.

Warm hands
Cold hands cause muscles to contract and increases pain whilst warm hands relax.

Massage not tickle
Stay firm as tickling instead of massaging can have a hugely irritating effect. Encourage feedback so that one exerts the correct degree of pressure. Most masseurs are surprised to find that the pressure needed is considerably more than one would expect. To prevent the masseur becoming tired use body weight where appropriate i.e. lean into the massage with a straight back. Standing to do a massage is often a lot easier because the body weight can be more easily controlled and used.

No baby oil
Synthetic oils such as baby oil allow too much slippage i.e. the hands slip over the skin, which is irritating. Use a good quality oil such as Potions & Possibilities Almond Oil. This sinks into the skin "carrying" the therapeutic essential oils into the body but also leaves a thin coat on the surface to prevent the hairs and any skin creases being "dragged". For instance as you massage upwards in long strokes over the muscles you should be able to see the muscle rolling ahead of you like a small wave which shows that your pressure is such that you are helping the muscles relax. If there is too much slippage or not enough pressure then this will not occur and you will probably find that your subject is tense and uncomfortable. If after ten minutes they are very still, lost in a trance like daze and breathing slowly and deeply then don't say a word - just carry on confident in the knowledge that you have "got the hands".

For more tailored advice on which oils to use email me or call on 01394 386161.

Have fun!

Julie
