<p>MUNICH—It has taken Audi a little longer than its rivals, but with the debut of the 2027 Q9 this evening, the company has joined them in offering a range-topping full-size SUV. No, not the Q7, although a third-generation version of that vehicle <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/06/heres-audis-next-q7-suv-and-us-only-sq7-now-with-an-rs-v8/">broke cover in June</a>. The car was designed first and foremost for Europe, with a third row of seats that's fine for small children or occasional use. But in America, there's a segment one size larger, pioneered by the Cadillac Escalade, and it's here we find the new Audi. With no concrete plans to replace the A8 sedan yet, the Q9 SUV becomes the brand's new flagship.</p>
<p>At 209 inches (5,309 mm) long, 79.2 inches (2,012 mm) wide, and 71.4 inches (1,814 mm) tall, it's definitely not diminutive, although parked next to the aforementioned Caddy, you'll find the American SUV exceeds this one by a few inches here and there. The 123.5-inch wheelbase (3,137 mm) is 5.6 inches (142 mm) longer than the Q7's, much of which translates to more room for the third row.</p>

<p>The Q9 looked big in the studio, but it was less imposing than a Mercedes-Benz GLS or BMW X7. The body panels feature more curves and more subtle creases than the Audis of a few years ago.                             <![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nearly a month since its launch, a first-of-its-kind commercial satellite built to save NASA's Swift gamma-ray telescope from a fiery reentry is having problems of its own, the agency announced Tuesday.</p>
<p>The Link satellite developed by Katalyst Space Technologies "experienced issues with attitude control" over the weekend, NASA said, causing the spacecraft to spin and resulting in sporadic communications.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>A bizarre series of events in a college microbiology lab class left 33 people—including students, professors, and lab workers—believing they were exposed to a deadly germ. Of those, 32 began taking an antibiotic regimen as a precaution to prevent a life-threatening infection. Two also underwent lumbar punctures—aka spinal taps—after developing mild symptoms.</p>
<p>But none of them had actually been exposed to a dangerous pathogen, a fortunate twist in the strange incident, which otherwise stands to be a cautionary tale for the ages. The incident was published in a recent issue <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/75/wr/mm7528a2.htm?s_cid=OS_mm7528a">of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report</a>.</p>
<p>It began with a simple laboratory exercise.                             <![CDATA[<p>Last week’s unprecedented security event in which two OpenAI security hacking models trespassed into the network of fellow AI company Hugging Face was enabled by exploiting one or more zero-day vulnerabilities in Artifactory, JFrog, the product’s developer, said Monday.</p>
<p>In an incident mimicking a dystopian sci-fi novel, two OpenAI models broke out of the restricted environment meant to keep them from accessing the Internet during an internal test, the AI company <a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/07/how-an-openai-benchmark-test-turned-into-a-real-world-cyberattack/">revealed last week</a>. The models went on to breach Hugging Face’s network and steal confidential information and credentials. OpenAI said its agent achieved the feat by exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability. The company called the event “unprecedented,” and outsiders largely agreed.</p>
<h2>Not the triumph made out to be</h2>
<p>OpenAI said the models exploited multiple attack vectors, including stolen credentials and zero-days, to gain remote code execution capabilities, but until now, the vulnerable software was unknown. JFrog’s Monday disclosure <a href="https://jfrog.com/blog/jfrog-and-openai-collaboration-on-zero-day-security-findings/">said</a> the product was a self-managed instance Artifactory, a repository management system that secures and streamlines customers’ software development operations. <p>As we've <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2021/07/lawsuit-ebay-tried-to-terrorize-stalk-and-silence-couple-that-ran-news-site/">previously written</a>, the case involved deliveries of live cockroaches, a funeral wreath, a book about surviving the loss of a spouse, and a bloody pig mask to the home of a couple who run a news website. There were also harassing messages sent via email and Twitter, and an attempt to install a GPS tracking device on the victims' car. Criminal charges resulted in guilty pleas and prison terms for former eBay employees.</p>
<p>The victims were Ina and David Steiner of Natick, Massachusetts, who run the news website EcommerceBytes. "David and I officially settled the lawsuit we filed in 2021 against eBay and its former executives over the stalking and harassment campaign we endured in 2019 designed to stop our reporting," Ina Steiner <a href="https://www.ecommercebytes.com/C/blog/blog.pl?/pl/2026/7/1785201549.html">wrote</a> on EcommerceBytes yesterday.                             <![CDATA[<p>Some 66 million years ago, an asteroid impact wiped out three-quarters of all plant and animal species on Earth, most notably taking down the dinosaurs. But exactly how that impact caused those extinctions has been the subject of fierce debate. According to a <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2026JG009837">new paper</a> published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, the impact would have produced an immense cloud of dust that superheated the upper atmosphere, charbroiling living organisms unable to take shelter and igniting widespread wildfires.</p>
<p>As <a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2021/02/astronomers-a-comet-fragment-not-an-asteroid-killed-off-the-dinosaurs/">previously reported</a>, the <a href="http://doc.rero.ch/record/210367/files/PAL_E4389.pdf">most widely accepted explanation</a> for what triggered that catastrophic <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cretaceous%E2%80%93Paleogene_extinction_event">mass extinction</a> is known as the “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvarez_hypothesis">Alvarez hypothesis</a>,” after the late physicist Luis Alvarez and his geologist son, Walter. In 1980, they proposed that the extinction event may have been caused by a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_impactor">massive asteroid or comet</a> hitting the Earth. They based this conclusion on their analysis of sedimentary layers at the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cretaceous%E2%80%93Paleogene_boundary">Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary</a>(the K-Pg boundary, formerly known as the K-T boundary) found all over the world, which included unusually high concentrations of iridium—a metal more commonly found in asteroids than on Earth. (That same year, Dutch geophysicist Jan Smit independently arrived at a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/285198a0" rel="nofollow" data-ml-dynamic="true" data-ml-dynamic-type="sl" data-orig-url="https://www.nature.com/articles/285198a0" data-ml-id="1" data-ml="true" data-xid="fr1723730874929ahj" data-skimlinks-tracking="xid:fr1723730874929ahj">similar conclusion</a>.)</p>
<p>Since then, scientists have identified a likely impact site: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_crater">a large crater</a> in Chicxulub, Mexico, in the Yucatan Peninsula, first discovered by geophysicists in the late 1970s. The impactor that created it was sufficiently large (between 11 and 81 kilometers, or 7 to 50 miles) to melt, shock, and eject granite from deep inside the Earth, probably causing a megatsunami and ejecting vaporized rock and sulfates into the atmosphere. Across the political spectrum, large numbers of Americans agree that these facilities should pay taxes, cover the bill for water and power upgrades, keep noise to a minimum, and employ locals at decent wages. In other words, data centers should legitimately benefit the communities whose land and power they use.</p>
<p>Developers often express a willingness to do these things—until they see the specific list of requirements.</p>
<p>A pitched battle in the Philadelphia suburbs provides a vivid illustration of this dynamic. Developer Brian O'Neill wants to build a 2 million-square-foot data center in a former steel plant. In a new study from Google Research, though, a team that looked at how workers are actually using Gemini "[did] not find evidence... to support the claims that AI is about to cause massive automation and displacement of white-collar work..."</p>
<p><a href="https://ai.google/static/documents/GoogleATLASv1.pdf">The paper</a>, released last week, introduces the "AI &amp; Economy ATLAS," an Activity, Task, Landscape, and Adoption Study of 15 million anonymized AI interactions across the Gemini App, Google's AI Mode, and the Gemini API. Their initial review of the data finds that, while AI sees some significant use across a wide variety of occupations, that use "remains shallow and overwhelmingly collaborative in nature, with end-to-end task automation limited in scope."</p>
<h2>"AI appears useful for a subset of tasks..."</h2>
<p>To come to these conclusions, Google researchers used an automated classifier to sort work-based AI interactions using the <a href="https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_stru.htm">Bureau of Labor Statistics' Standard Occupational Classifications</a> and <a href="https://www.onetonline.org/find/all">O*NET's more detailed database of specific work interactions</a>. While this method required some probabilistic classification of "inherently uncertain" interactions, verification by human reviewers found it to be a reliable gauge of how Gemini prompts were being used for work.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/07/despite-ai-hype-googles-data-shows-workers-arent-automating-themselves-away/">Read full article</a></p>

<p>The Airbus A350-1000ULR was developed specifically for Qantas Airways’ planned nonstop flights between Sydney and either New York or London. The Australian airline has ordered a dozen of the new airliners for its <a href="https://www.qantas.com/en-us/onboard/fleet/a350">Project Sunrise</a> routes that aim to start offering tickets for sale in 2027.</p>
<p>The aircraft had been doing <a href="https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2026-06-worlds-longest-range-aircraft-the-airbus-a350-1000ulr-takes-to-the-skies">initial test flights</a> near the Airbus facilities in Toulouse, France, with a small team of test pilots and test engineers before conducting its first ultra long-haul test flight last week. <p>The Trump administration and the two largest prediction markets—Kalshi and Polymarket—sued Minnesota after the state <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/05/minnesota-prohibits-prediction-markets-promptly-gets-sued-by-trump-admin/">enacted the law in May</a>. The cases were consolidated, and a <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mnd.234259/gov.uscourts.mnd.234259.48.0.pdf">ruling</a> issued yesterday imposed a preliminary injunction blocking the law that was scheduled to take effect on August 1.</p>
<p>Minnesota lawmakers saw prediction markets as indistinguishable from gambling, but the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) argues it has exclusive authority to regulate the platforms under federal law. <p>Trump has become fixated on the completely false, thoroughly debunked claim that vaccines cause autism, the Journal reported. People familiar with the president's scattered thinking say Trump wants an autism remedy to be part of his legacy and thinks scaling back childhood vaccinations is a way to secure that achievement. As such, he has grown frustrated and disappointed that Kennedy hasn't done more to cut back federal childhood vaccine recommendations or confirm a link to the neurodevelopmental disorder.</p>
<p>In May, the president reportedly aired his disappointment, calling out Kennedy for having "the yips" that were preventing him from acting on his zealous anti-vaccine agenda while holding the highest health position in the country. It will likely be years, however, before these countermeasures are available, and it’s even more uncertain if those who refuse vaccines would take such treatments.</p>
<p>Fueled by large outbreaks in <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/the-south-carolina-measles-outbreak-is-slowing-down/">South Carolina</a> and <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/anguished-parents-crying-doctors-life-amid-utahs-measles-outbreak/">Utah</a>, the US had already surpassed last year’s 2,289 measles cases, and it’s only July. The hack, Hugging Face added, involved “a swarm of tens of thousands of automated actions” that stole internal Hugging Face credentials. The OpenAI models achieved this feat by exploiting a zero-day flaw in Hugging Face’s data-processing pipeline to run malicious code that escalated the models’ access to the company’s high-value cloud and server clusters.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>The Trump administration today exempted SpaceX's Starlink routers from the Federal Communications Commission ban on foreign-made routers.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-26-775A1.pdf">public notice</a> issued by the FCC said Starlink routers received approval from the Department of War (also known as the Department of Defense). SpaceX's exemption is good until February 1, 2028.</p>
<p>The FCC kicked off an industry-wide scramble when it updated the <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/supplychain/coveredlist">Covered List</a> to include all consumer-grade routers made at least partly outside the US, except those that are granted exemptions. The Covered List includes devices deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to national security.                             <![CDATA[<p>Anti-vaccine Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made it one of his top priorities to convince Americans to "<a href="https://realfood.gov/">eat real food</a>," including more fresh fruits and vegetables. But, it's a hard sell when those real foods are causing real eruptions of explosive diarrhea across the country.</p>
<p>The Food and Drug Administration is <a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/investigations-foodborne-illness-outbreaks?utm_medium=email&amp;amp;utm_source=govdelivery">investigating six outbreaks</a> of foodborne diarrheal illnesses caused by <em>Cyclospora</em>, a unicellular parasite known for spreading from human feces onto fresh produce. Past outbreaks have been linked to leafy greens, fresh basil, fresh cilantro, snow peas, green onions, and raspberries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tallied a record high of <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/cyclosporiasis/php/surveillance/index.html">over 11,500 confirmed and probable cases</a> across 41 states, with over 300 requiring hospitalization. And that case total is almost certainly an undercount.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/investigation-9-state-outbreak-cyclospora-illnesses-iceberg-lettuce-july-2026">The largest of the outbreaks</a> is linked to Taylor Farms' iceberg lettuce that was sold at Taco Bell restaurants and many other companies. The outbreak has sickened thousands of people across nine states, up from five states identified last week. One of the affected states is Michigan, which alone has reported <a href="https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/keep-mi-healthy/infectious-diseases/infectious-disease-outbreaks">9,253 cases as of July 27.</a> The other five outbreaks have no identified source.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/health/2026/07/epic-diarrhea-outbreak-has-40-of-americans-avoiding-fruits-and-veggies/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>Apple has released iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS 26.6. Apart from potential security hotfixes, these are likely the last updates before the arrival of iOS 27, macOS 27, and so on.</p>
<p>All of today's releases include minor bug fixes, and there are numerous security updates: <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-gb/128067">more than 150 for macOS 26.6</a>. <!-- obsidian -->Apple also rolled out macOS 14.8.8 and macOS 15.7.8 for older devices, also focused on security fixes.</p>
<p>In terms of new features, you won't find many in these releases, as they mainly pave the way for the next major OS update, likely to hit sometime in September. Most notably, the release notes for iOS and iPadOS 26.6 say the update "<!-- obsidian -->optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27." <p>A 2018 child-luring investigation, which began in Madison, Wisconsin, and eventually extended to Halifax, Canada, was based on a false premise.</p>
<p>Police were looking for a man using the Kik messaging service under the name "fus__ro_dah" (two underscores after "fus"), but they accidentally requested records for the username "fus_ro_dah" (one underscore after "fus").                             <![CDATA[<p>After a big court loss last week, Google has confirmed that it won’t give up its fight to block AI bots from scraping its search results. And Reddit is weirdly along for the ride.</p>
<p>Curiously invoking the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), <a href="https://arstechnica.com/google/2025/12/google-lobs-lawsuit-at-search-result-scraping-firm-serpapi/">Google sued SerpApi</a> last December. The search giant accused the web scraper of circumventing its anti-scraping technology and then selling content scraped from Google search results through an unauthorized “Google Search API” software service.</p>
<p>According to Google, the anti-scraping tech was in place to protect copyrighted content in search results. Allegedly, SerpApi’s circumvention threatened to disrupt Google’s relationships with rights holders, including some who license content to Google to appear in so-called <a href="https://support.google.com/knowledgepanel/answer/9163198?hl=en">“knowledge panels”</a> that are displayed in some search results for well-known people or entities.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/07/google-wont-give-up-odd-war-against-ai-web-scraping-despite-court-loss/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>Texas cannot enforce a law's requirement that websites block minors from seeing harmful speech, the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit ruled on Friday.</p>
<p>Big Tech lobby groups challenged the Texas "law’s requirement that certain social media-based 'digital service providers' (DSPs) monitor and filter content accessible to known minors to prevent exposure to several categories of potentially harmful speech," judges wrote. In a 2-1 <a href="https://www.ca5.uscourts.gov/opinions/pub/25/25-50096-CV0.pdf">ruling</a> in favor of the tech groups' challenge, judges said the monitoring and filtering requirement is preempted by Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act of 1996.</p>
<p>The Computer &amp; Communications Industry Association (CCIA) and NetChoice challenged portions of the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment Act (<a href="https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/88R/billtext/html/HB00018F.htm">SCOPE Act</a>), which applies to websites and online applications that collect or process personally identifying information. The tech groups won a preliminary injunction from a district court. The telecom giant revealed a deal worth more than $1 billion to link <a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/07/googles-ai-buildout-drove-37-increase-in-electricity-use-in-2025/">Google data centers</a> using Verizon’s dark fiber routes—and it’s also tearing copper wiring out of central offices as it converts them into small data centers suitable for supporting AI inference workloads.</p>
<p>The telecom company publicly disclosed the Google partnership and data center conversion efforts as part of a new “AI Connect” business initiative during an <a href="https://www.verizon.com/about/investors/quarterly-reports/2q-2026-earnings-conference-call-webcast">earnings conference call</a> covering the second quarter of 2026. Verizon also expects to announce additional AI-related deals by the end of the year that would be “worth multiple billions of dollars in revenue over the next several years,” said Dan Schulman, CEO of Verizon Communications, during the <a href="https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/xnys/vz/earnings">earnings call</a>.</p>
<p>“Now it really is about, 'how do you connect data center to data center to assure that you can optimize to maximize the ever-exploding need for compute?'” Schulman said. “And while that data center connectivity demand is exploding, there's an equal amount of desire and demand to power inference models and applications that need ultra-low latency, like robotics or remote surgery, autonomous driving, and move that out into the edge, as opposed to these big, massive data centers.”</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/07/verizon-seeks-ai-profits-with-mini-data-centers-1b-dark-fiber-deal-with-google/">Read full article</a></p>
