<p>This signifies the semiconductor industry’s broader embrace of high NA EUV photolithography technology that can cost up to $400 million per machine and is only provided by the Dutch technology company ASML, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-08/asml-tsmc-samsung-intel-back-12-inch-masks-for-ai-chips">Bloomberg reports</a>. The technology would allow chip designers to implement even smaller features in potentially more powerful and efficient next-generation chips produced for AI data centers and consumer electronics such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.</p>
<p>ASML’s EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography machines enable chipmakers to use powerful laser light to imprint patterns in silicon wafers, layer by layer, and gradually form the computer circuitry that makes silicon chips work. Yamazaki is back this fall with the hotly anticipated sequel, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla_Minus_Zero"><em>Godzilla Minus Zero.</em></a> Toho just dropped the full IMAX trailer, featuring not just our beloved Godzilla, but also a distinctive roar that teases the appearance of none other than the three-headed <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Ghidorah">King Ghidorah</a>.</p>

<p><em>Godzilla Minus One</em> focused on kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima, who struggled with survivor's guilt after he failed to take action when Godzilla attacked the Japanese base on Odo Island in 1945. Knocked unconscious, Kōichi woke to find he was one of only two survivors—and the other, a mechanic named Tachibana, was furious about it. His parents and many others were killed in the WWII bombing of Tokyo. Kōichi rebuilt a life with a woman named Noriko and the orphaned baby she rescued, Noriko.                             <![CDATA[<p>Meta took days to remove ads containing AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on Facebook and Instagram. Some ads featured photos of real kids, including a press photo of a young member of a European royal family and images swiped from a popular Instagram profile of a preteen girl deemed an influencer.</p>
<p>In an <a href="https://www.techtransparencyproject.org/articles/meta-ran-hundreds-of-paid-ads-with-child-sexual-abuse-imagery">investigation</a> published Tuesday, the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) reported that Meta failed to detect 332 ads containing CSAM this year. The “vast majority” of ads promoted AI apps made in China, while many ads promoted so-called “nudify” apps that make it easy for bad actors to use AI and digitally alter images of children.</p>
<p>TTP matched “multiple CSAM ads to photos of real children that appeared online.” These ads seem to violate federal child pornography laws, since the Justice Department has clarified <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/05/csam-generated-by-ai-is-still-csam-doj-says-after-rare-arrest/">that AI CSAM is just as harmful as CSAM</a>. The young royal’s image was “animated into a video of her performing a graphic sex act,” TTP found. Other ads animated a photo of a 14-year-old Instagram influencer “showing off her new sports club uniform” into “a video of her performing oral sex.” A third “preteen” victim “posing in a pink athletic outfit with pigtails” in a series of stock photos was morphed into a video where she looks frightened as she’s molested by an adult male, TTP reported.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/09/real-photos-of-young-girls-were-in-nudify-app-ads-on-facebook-instagram/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>Google is one of the major players in AI (meaning machine learning) weather forecast model space. The models it and others generate have their <a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/06/the-weather-and-climate-science-ai-revolution-isnt-revolutionary/">strengths and weaknesses</a>, but the main advantage is that they can have forecast performance similar to traditional models while requiring far less computing horsepower to run. That means they can be run more frequently.</p>
<p>Google recently <a href="https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/google-deepmind/introducing-weathernext-3/">released version 3</a> of its WeatherNext model, with the biggest change being that it now ingests some satellite weather data, shortening the lag time between current weather conditions and generating a new forecast. The update is detailed in a <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.03582">white paper</a>.</p>
<h2>Reanalysis</h2>
<p>Many weather models make use of what’s called a “reanalysis,” which is a sort of model of its own. Reanalyses take in all kinds of weather data and combine them into a single, consistent global snapshot of the atmosphere.                             <![CDATA[<p>As the world's largest search engine, Google is often a target of Europe's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which seeks to rein in Big Tech. The European Commission hit Google with a hefty 460 million euro ($543 million) fine in July for preferring its own services in searches for travel and shopping. Google has now made changes in accordance with the European Union's wishes, but it claims the result is a massive reduction in search quality.</p>
<p>If you don't live in Europe and perform a search for, say, hotels, Google will helpfully provide myriad sponsored links, booking recommendations, and price-comparison tools in its results. The problem is that this content isn't organic—Google includes links and offers contingent on its business interests. To get to the regular search results for these types of lucrative searches, you have to scroll way down the page. Companies that partner with Google can get more exposure, but the European Commission says this creates an unlevel playing field.</p>
<p>"To comply with DMA requirements, we're making significant changes to Search in Europe," Google's Nick Fox told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/google-warns-lower-quality-it-revamps-europe-search-results-avoid-eu-fines-2026-09-08/">Reuters</a>. The move comes days after The Tetris Company <a href="https://x.com/Tetris_Official/status/2095933372019216384">disavowed any involvement</a> with the game and said that it "take[s] copyright infringement very seriously."</p>
<p>The White House's "Build the Wall" game asked players to stop a "Zombie Border siege" by stacking <em>Tetris</em>-styled bricks in an attempt to "hold the line." Unlike in <em>Tetris</em>, though, the blocks in "Build the Wall" don't disappear when you complete a line, meaning each brick contributes to an impassable barrier for the pixel-art "zombies" marching in from the "Southern Border." That change makes the gameplay pretty uninteresting for anything but cheap propaganda, and it also means that every game quickly and ironically ends with a "Border Breached" message when the blocks inevitably fill up the well.</p>

<p>Eggshells have long fascinated scientists because of their <a href="https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.109.144302">mechanical properties</a>. For instance, it's well known that cracking an egg requires applying just enough force to the center to achieve a clean break without completely shattering the shell. In 2012, MIT mechanical engineer Pedro Reis co-authored <a href="https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.109.144301">a paper</a> demonstrating <a href="https://physics.aps.org/articles/v5/110">the link</a> between an egg's ovoid geometry and its rigidity, a major factor when predicting how much force an object can endure before cracking. (As I <a href="https://slate.com/technology/2012/09/whats-the-best-way-to-crack-an-egg-how-physics-can-help-you-when-youre-making-your-next-souffle.html">wrote for Slate</a> at the time, rigidity is related to, but distinct from, strength. If one eggshell has tiny cracks and the other doesn't, both shells have different strengths—the cracked one will break more easily—but the same rigidity.)</p>
<p>Reis started studying eggshells after participating in a popular physics demonstration: walking on cartons of eggs without breaking them. The key, he learned, was to align the eggs with their narrow tip (the most crack-resistant part) pointing up, and then carefully place one's feet to distribute one's weight over the entire surface area. This ensures that no single egg is overloaded. While it takes around 5.5 pounds of force to crack an egg, that depends on the direction in which the force is applied, as well as its distribution over the shell's surface.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/09/how-eggshells-can-protect-spacecraft-from-space-debris/">Read full article</a></p>

It's a "combat demo" in the style of <em>UQM</em>’s melee mode, where players can assemble a fleet from the game's roster of nearly 40 ships, then match those ships up in head-to-head arcade <em>SpaceWar</em>-style action. The demo can be found on <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/4378070/Free_Stars_Children_of_Infinity_Combat_Demo/">Steam</a> and <a href="https://www.gog.com/en/game/free_stars_children_of_infinity_combat_demo">GOG</a>, and it's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. (Console versions are coming, but they're not yet out.)</p>

<h2>What's in the demo</h2>
<p><em>Children of Infinity</em> is a space adventure RPG, just like <em>The Ur-Quan Masters</em> (and its direct spiritual predecessors, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/09/masterpiece-starflight-for-pc/"><em>Starflight</em> </a>and <em>Starflight 2</em>). What's been released today is just one part of the game—the arcade-style "melee" portion, which lets players jump into one-versus-one combat against another player or against a computer-controlled opponent. <p>With the Series E funding round, co-led by Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital, Stoke Space brought its total amount of capital raised to $2.3 billion, a staggering amount for a company that has yet to attempt an orbital launch.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>In early June, a fire broke out in a still-unfinished building at the Lake Mariner data center in Somerset, New York, exposing just how little the local fire department knew about what it was walking into. Firefighters reportedly found no working alarm, no suppression system, and three dead hydrants; the safety documents they’re legally entitled to see reportedly burned up in the blaze.</p>
<p>Steve Matisz, chief of the Barker Fire Department, <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/chief-lake-mariner-fire-exposed-035900037.html">said</a> his crew went into the building “kind of blind,” facing heavy black smoke from chemicals they couldn’t identify because the safety sheets meant to inform them had apparently burned up. “It’s been a difficult situation,” Matisz said. He wasn't sure what to think about the claim that the safety sheets had burned in the fire.</p>
<p>The site is a former coal mine on Lake Ontario. The $3.2 billion campus is one of the <a href="https://www.facilitiesnet.com/datacenters/article/Inside-TeraWulf8217s-Fast-Track-Data-Center-Expansion--21056">largest AI data center buildouts</a> in New York, and it has many stakeholders. A company called TeraWulf owns and operates the data center on land it leases from a company owned by its own CEO; Fluidstack, a UK-based AI company, will run the center; Google holds warrants for a future 14 percent equity stake and has agreed to guarantee Fluidstack’s lease payments; and Anthropic is among the AI companies whose compute demand the facility exists to serve.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/features/2026/09/the-ai-data-center-boom-is-causing-new-accountability-problems/">Read full article</a></p>

<p>The two-stage rocket, named Spectrum, became the first fully commercial launch vehicle in Europe to reach orbit. With Saturday's success, Isar is the clear leader among a pack of several European launch startups vying to inject some competition into Europe's stagnant launch market.</p>
<p>Isar's 92-foot-tall (28-meter) Spectrum rocket lifted off at 4:12 pm EST (20:12 UTC) Saturday from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway, where it was 10:12 pm local time and the final bluish hues of daylight faded from the late summer sky. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">That dietary advice has changed the way the world consumes salmon, pushing consumer demand ever upward and production to higher and higher levels. Most of that demand is being met with farmed salmon: Today, <a href="https://globalsalmoninitiative.org/en/about-salmon-farming/">nearly 70 percent </a>of the salmon consumed on the planet are raised in pens and cages.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The US Department of Agriculture’s <a href="https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/">Dietary Guidelines for Americans</a> recommend eating at least 8 ounces of fish a week and urges people to choose salmon or other species that are similarly high in “heart-healthy” Omega-3 fatty acids. But the vehicle is already under investigation by the US federal government, which is probing whether it meets federal safety standards.</p>
<p>The investigation comes just hours after the electric automaker <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/tesla-cybercab-had-a-quiet-debut/">welcomed hundreds of fans to downtown Austin</a> to ride in the driverless Cybercabs. Tesla plans to deploy the vehicles on its <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/here-comes-the-tesla-cybercab/">Robotaxi ride-hail network</a>, which is currently operating in a handful of cities in Texas and Florida.</p>
<p>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is updating vehicle standards to make it easier and faster for driverless cars to deploy on public roads. It’s currently tweaking eight rules, including those requiring car parts that driverless cars don’t really need: brake pedals, windshield wipers, and rearview mirrors.                             <![CDATA[<p>The BepiColombo mission cleared a major milestone this week in the final stretch of an eight-year interplanetary voyage to Mercury, the hard-to-reach, scorching hot iron world at the Solar System's innermost frontier.</p>
<p>The robotic science mission, with a price tag of nearly $2 billion, is led by the European Space Agency with contributions from Japan and the United States. Since its launch in 2018, BepiColombo has spiraled closer to the Sun using a combination of plasma propulsion and a series of flybys of Earth, Venus, and Mercury. The maneuvers changed the spacecraft's velocity and steered it toward a final encounter with Mercury later this year.</p>
<p>Next time it reaches Mercury, BepiColombo will be traveling at just the right speed for the planet's gravity to capture the spacecraft into orbit. Scientists working on interplanetary missions are accustomed to long waits for scientific payoffs. It took nearly 10 years for NASA's New Horizons spacecraft to travel from Earth to Pluto.                             <![CDATA[<p>Self-identifying OpenAI agents posted 18,000 messages to a public wiki that discussed ways for other agents to bypass security sandbox restrictions during what was likely internal testing designed to gauge the agents’ hacking abilities, <a href="https://collusion.wiki/">researchers said Friday</a>.</p>
<p>In all, agents with 3,700 distinct self-given names posted the messages to German site <a href="https://dsewiki.vercel.app">DSEwiki</a> over a six-week period. Besides discussing ways the agents could break out of the restricted environment OpenAI intended to prevent them from posting code or content to the Internet, the posts shared test answers. The posts also shared possible ways to perform XSS (cross-site scripting) attacks against the wiki and to impersonate site moderators. In three of the posts, agents used the word “swarm” to describe the collection of agents engaged in the activity.</p>
<h2>Colluding to share answers</h2>
<p>The research team—composed of Sydney Von Arx, Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen, and Cormac Slade Byrd—said they found the posts and pieced them together. The researchers say there are gaps in their understanding of precisely what actions the agents took because the research is based solely on the content of the posts. Additionally, the agents generated “chain of thought” data that’s understood only by OpenAI. As a result, the researchers said, they in some cases made educated guesses, including that the agents were, in fact, from OpenAI.                             <![CDATA[<p>A six-week-old baby girl in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, died from measles, the county coroner confirmed to local press on Friday.</p>
<p>Stephen Diamantoni, a Republican elected coroner in 2007, <a href="https://lancasteronline.com/news/local/6-week-old-amish-child-died-from-measles-lancaster-county-coroner-confirms/article_9167a878-7468-4d27-8671-58a0cbc3d629.html">told Lancaster Online</a> that the baby died at home. "I believe it was the 18th of August," he said.</p>
<p>He also noted that the baby had a genetic condition called <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/amish-lethal-microcephaly/">Amish lethal microcephaly</a>, in which babies are born with unusually small heads and underdeveloped brains. The condition is caused by a mutation in the <em><a href="https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/gene/slc25a19/">SLC25A19</a></em> gene, which codes for a protein involved with energy-producing enzymes in the mitochondria and is thought to be important for brain development. About 1 in 500 babies in the Old Order Amish population of Pennsylvania is born with the condition.                             <![CDATA[<p>The Federal Communications Commission yesterday urged a court to dismiss a Disney lawsuit and let the FCC continue a proceeding that could end in the nonrenewal of ABC's broadcast licenses.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, two watchdog groups and individual viewers of ABC stations are trying to intervene in the lawsuit, saying they are worried Disney will agree to a settlement with the FCC that isn't in the public's interest. Disney opposed the motion, and a judge will have to decide whether the groups and individuals can act as intervenors in the case.</p>
<p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/08/disney-sues-fcc-and-its-chair-escalating-fight-against-trumps-chief-censor/">Disney sued the FCC</a> on August 18, saying the agency is waging a “campaign of censorship” to retaliate against ABC for speech that President Trump doesn't like.                             <![CDATA[<p>Sheeppox is a highly contagious, often fatal <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheeppox">viral disease</a> that was largely eradicated from much of European livestock in the 20th century. But there is still the occasional regional outbreak, such as the one that afflicted many flocks of sheep in Greece <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/greek-sheep-farmers-devastated-by-sheeppox-outbreak-flocks-culled-2025-09-19/">last year</a>. In order to reconstruct how the virus has evolved over the last 3,500 years, scientists extracted and sequenced sheeppox DNA preserved in the animal skins used for the parchment of numerous medieval manuscripts. They reported their findings in <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.02.23.707469v3">a new paper</a> published in the journal Science Advances.</p>
<p>“The recording of ancient DNA of pathogens has completely changed our understanding of infectious disease in the past, and here we show that parchment can also preserve animal pathogen DNA. It is possible that archives and libraries around the world also contain the genetic traces of disease outbreaks in animals in the past,” <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1142448">said co-author Louis L’Hôte</a>, a graduate student at University College Dublin. “These genomes help us understand how these pathogens evolved and how they impacted past societies—such as sheeppox virus, which we show has been affecting Eurasian sheep herds for at least three and a half millennia.”</p>
<p>Per the authors, the earliest known written evidence of sheeppox infection dates to the first century CE, when Roman accounts described outbreaks of skin lesions ("pustules") in the animals. There are more frequent mentions of deadly outbreaks of "pockes" or "variola" in sheep by the Middle Ages, recorded in various agricultural texts and accounting documents in France, Spain, and England. There seemed to be a decline in outbreaks in 17th-century France, although frequent outbreaks re-emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries, often with high mortality rates in the flocks. <p>Broadcom’s acquisition of the virtualization firm brought the end of <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2025/07/some-vmware-perpetual-license-owners-are-unable-to-download-security-patches/">perpetual license sales</a> and the arrival of pricey, stacked, subscription-based bundles that priced out many SMBs.</p>
<p>The most obvious is VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), VMware’s flagship private cloud bundle that has been Broadcom’s primary focus since taking over VMware. Many SMBs find that VCF is unaffordable and stuffed with unnecessary offerings.
