                            <![CDATA[<p>It's been far too long since I've been able to report a new land speed record. For a while, it looked like <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/11/bloodhound-ssc/">Bloodhound</a> might have been able to make good on its 1,000 mph (1,609 km/h) attempt, but <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/01/bad-news-for-land-speed-record-fans-as-bloodhound-goes-up-for-sale/">then the money ran out</a>. As a result, Thrust SSC's two-way average of 763.6 mph (1,229 km/h), set in 1997, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2015/10/breaking-the-sound-barrier-by-air-by-land-and-in-free-fall/">remains the fastest anyone has ever driven a wheeled vehicle over a timed mile</a>. But yesterday, on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, a new record was set by the JCB Hydromax for hydrogen-powered cars.</p>
<p>JCB is a UK-based manufacturer of heavy industrial and agricultural equipment—think diggers, loaders, backhoes, tractors, and so on. And as JCB is based in the UK, it doesn't have the luxury of being able to ignore carbon emissions targets; it has to have alternatives to diesel engines. For some products, that means switching to batteries, but the company has also been working with hydrogen. At first, that meant fuel cells, but after developing prototypes, JCB concluded the tech was too expensive and too fragile for life on the farm or the construction site. Instead, in 2020, the company started developing its own hydrogen combustion engine.</p>
<p>The idea of burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine has been tried before with little success. For example, in 2006, BMW modified a naturally aspirated V12 engine in a 7 Series to run on hydrogen, which it did, but with 60 percent of the power and five times the fuel consumption compared to gasoline. More recently, Toyota's president Akio Toyoda has been among the drivers of an <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/06/toyota-tells-us-about-doing-a-24-hour-race-with-a-hydrogen-engine/">experimental hydrogen-burning Toyota Corolla</a> in some <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2024/06/toyota-tests-liquid-hydrogen-burning-corolla-in-another-24-hour-race/">Japanese endurance races</a>. In this case, Toyota started with the GR Corolla's turbocharged three-cylinder engine; the forced induction from the turbocharger made up somewhat for the reduced energy density of hydrogen.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/08/jcb-sets-a-new-406-mph-speed-record-for-hydrogen-powered-cars/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>The Trump administration is trying to stop New York from enforcing its gambling laws against Kalshi, and yesterday said it ordered the prediction market to continue operating in the state.</p>
<p>The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) <a href="https://www.cftc.gov/PressRoom/PressReleases/9281-26">announced</a> that it exercised its emergency authority in response to a "market emergency." The CFTC said it acted "to ensure market stability" and "ordered the exchange to continue to operate in accordance with the Commodity Exchange Act’s Core Principles." The Trump administration took the action after a request from Kalshi.</p>
<p>The market emergency alleged by the CFTC is that New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Kalshi on July 31. James' <a href="https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/files/court-filings/new-york-v-kalshiex-llc-petition-2026.pdf">lawsuit</a> seeks a court order to permanently enjoin Kalshi "from operating an unlawful gambling business" in the state. <p>It’s indeed depressing to imagine piles of book spines waiting to be fed into wood chippers while torn-out pages are cropped, scanned, and trashed. But that’s the cheapest and easiest way to scan books as fast as possible, and AI companies are in a race to advance their models by training on the kind of engaging, high-quality long-form texts that can only be found in books. So book lovers fear it’s likely that the practice is happening on a grander scale than is currently being reported and that some physical copies of books will be lost forever.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>Google has revealed its Pixel phone hardware for 2026, and you won't be surprised. The Pixel 11 series looks a lot like <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/08/google-pixel-10-series-review-dont-call-it-an-android/">last year's lineup</a>, featuring an evolution of the design Google adopted with the Pixel 9. There are some minor tweaks, a few new hardware goodies, and yes, even more Gemini-powered AI. The new phones are joined by an updated Pixel Watch 5 with much the same story, as well as Google's first in-house tracker device, the Pixel Tag. And you can place orders for all of Google's new hardware today.</p>
<p>The Pixel 11 series is clearly the star of the show. You might even call it the highlight—or <em>HiLight</em>. Just as the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/08/the-pixel-11s-glow-feature-is-actually-called-hilight-heres-what-it-does/">leaks predicted</a>, Google's most notable hardware innovation for the 2026 Pixel phones is the return of the notification LED (sort of).</p>
<p>The new HiLight feature is available on the Pro phones, so the base model Pixel will remain unilluminated. HiLight consists of a ring of RGB LEDs inside the flash assembly on the back of the phone. It lights up when you're talking to Gemini, so you don't have to look at the screen of your phone to know you've been heard or that the AI is working.                             <![CDATA[<p>As AI models gain advanced <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/anthropics-mythos-will-force-a-cybersecurity-reckoning-just-not-the-one-you-think/">capabilities</a> to find vulnerabilities in software, develop <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/openai-didnt-notice-its-ai-agents-using-a-message-board-to-plan-their-hacking-spree/">ways to exploit them</a>, and even carry out autonomous <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/openai-anthropic-ai-hacking-sprees-illegal/">hacking sprees</a>, researchers offered a sobering new example on Tuesday, <a href="https://a.security/blog/asecurity-zoomsday">disclosing vulnerabilities</a> in the video conferencing platform Zoom that could have been exploited to take over targets’ devices. Anyone on a call that involved screen sharing, whether participants or the host, would have been vulnerable to a silent attack that could be carried out with no indication and no interaction from the victim.</p>
<p>Researchers from the digital defense firm A Security say the <a href="https://www.zoom.com/en/trust/security-bulletin/zsb-26015/">bug</a> was discovered in early June using publicly available AI models, and that it took fewer than 20 prompts to uncover the vulnerabilities and create a working attack. Zoom issued a security advisory on Tuesday, including details about fixes the company has already begun rolling out to address the flaws, which affected devices running all operating systems that Zoom supports—Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.</p>
<p>“What is interesting for us and what we believe is dangerous is the democratization of these capabilities—the barrier to entry is dropping rapidly,” A Security cofounder Omer Gull told WIRED ahead of the disclosure. “Before it would have taken a team of five people maybe six months with a lot of refining and iteration to find this. Now people can reach the same results with under 20 prompts. And Zoom is an important type of target because people assume trust when using it. It has signed a new multiyear deal to broadcast the sport on Disney+ and ESPN+ in 144 countries, with live coverage of each entire ePrix, from practice through qualifying to the race. The new media deal means that here in the US, Formula E will be shown on the streaming networks from next season; since 2023, the sport has been shown live on Roku.</p>
<p>"This is a landmark moment for Formula E and reflects the incredible momentum behind our Championship," said Formula E's CEO Jeff Dodds. "Disney’s unrivaled global reach and storytelling will introduce Formula E to millions of new fans while bringing them closer than ever to the drama, innovation, and excitement of electric racing. As we enter the GEN4 era, this provides an exceptional platform to accelerate our global growth and continue building one of the world’s most exciting sports properties."</p>
<p>As we've previously covered here at Ars, next season was already shaping up to be a massive one for the electric racing series. It debuts <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2025/11/formula-e-gets-2x-the-power-and-awd-with-new-gen4-car/">the new GEN4 car</a> in December as well. The new car has double the power of the current racer, with a nominal 603 hp (450 kW) from a twin-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain that goes up to 804 hp (600 kW) in Attack Mode. Which means that for much of a lap, a Formula E GEN4 car will generate <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/05/f1-set-for-another-engine-tweak-in-2027-and-whats-this-about-v8s/">as much power as a 2027-spec Formula 1 car</a>; the F1 car is also stuck with just 602 hp from its V6 engine when the battery has no charge.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/08/formula-e-finds-a-new-home-on-disney-espn/">Read full article</a></p>

Known as the Cambrian Explosion, this flurry of rapid evolution produced most of the animal phyla and ecosystems we see around us today.</p>
<p class="western" align="left">And it may have taken off because some of those early animals evolved a bizarre new ability: pooping. <p>The responses are unsurprising; the medical and health communities have consistently fought against the anti-vaccine, anti-science agendas pushed by Trump and his health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has no background in science, medicine, or public health. The American Academy of Pediatrics—which called the order "<a href="https://www.aap.org/en/news-room/news-releases/aap/2026/aap-statement-in-response-to-executive-order-on-vaccines/">not only disheartening but dangerous</a>"—is leading a lawsuit against previous changes to federal childhood vaccine recommendations under Trump and Kennedy. In March, the organization, along with other medical groups, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/health/2026/03/judge-temporarily-blocks-rfk-jr-s-changes-to-cdc-vaccine-recommendations/">won a temporary injunction reversing most of the changes</a>.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>Romanian army divers used explosives to destroy two Russian-made drones found floating in the Black Sea near Romania’s largest natural gas project, according to the NATO member country’s defense minister.</p>
<p>Defense Minister Radu Miruță <a href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/2535405280216704">posted a Facebook video</a> supposedly showing one of the drones being blown up in the water by explosive ordnance disposal divers of the Romanian army on August 11, as <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/romania-destroys-drones-drifting-near-major-offshore-gas-project-black-sea-2026-08-11/">reported by Reuters</a> and other news outlets. The drones were first spotted in the water by a ship working in the vicinity of the <a href="https://www.omvpetrom.com/en/about-us/what-we-do/our-projects/neptun-deep">Neptun Deep</a>—an offshore gas project under development in the Black Sea that will make Romania the largest gas producer in the European Union.</p>
<p>A Romanian Coast Guard ship that responded with army soldiers aboard found two drifting Gerbera-type drones of Russian design along with other debris.                             <![CDATA[<p>Google’s Chrome browser has added a new feature that could go a long way in preventing a form of account takeover that’s grown increasingly common as users adopt two-factor authentication, passkeys, and similar protections.</p>
<p>The new Chrome protection is known as <a href="https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/security/prevent-cookie-theft-with-session-binding">device-bound session credentials</a> (DBSCs). The measure stores a unique encryption key in a silicon-resident fortress that’s built into the device running the browser. On Windows machines, this fortress is called a TPM, short for Trusted Platform Module. On macOS and iOS, it’s known as a secure enclave. Other platforms have differing names. Recently released versions of Chrome for Windows and macOS generate a key that’s stored in this fortress.</p>
<h2>An antidote to session cookie theft</h2>
<p>DBSCs protect against the theft of session cookies, the unique strings of characters that websites store on browsers. Session cookies greatly speed up browsing on sensitive sites that require user authentication.                             <![CDATA[<p>Meta and TikTok tried to defeat thousands of social media addiction lawsuits in one fell swoop, but an appeals court rejected the attempt in a ruling issued yesterday.</p>
<p>First up among the lawsuits is a case brought against Meta by the California attorney general and other state AGs. Meta <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cand.419868/gov.uscourts.cand.419868.455.0_1.pdf">said</a> in a July court filing that the state AGs' demands for damages would amount to more than $1.4 trillion. A trial in district court is scheduled to start on August 19, with jury selection beginning August 12.</p>

CEO Sundar Pichai <a href="https://x.com/sundarpichai/status/2087222656819241292">announced</a> today that Gemini has reached 1 billion monthly active users (MAUs), an important milestone for any Google product. While 13 other Google products have managed that feat, Gemini has done it faster than any other.</p>
<p>Gemini has <a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/04/googles-privacy-maze-how-gemini-traps-you-and-your-data/">wormed its way</a> into virtually every Google product and service, powering email organization in Gmail, document summary in Drive, and much more. Gemini is also core to Google's flagship search experience, with AI Mode and AI Overviews becoming increasingly hard to avoid. The 1 billion-user metric has nothing to do with any of that, though.</p>
<p>These 1 billion users may also be encountering Gemini in all those places, but that's not the MAU metric. Pichai is talking only about people who are opening the Gemini app or visiting the Gemini web interface to enter a prompt or access Gemini Live. Supply is up thanks to an ever-increasing stream of ex-lease cars reaching the market, and yet prices have been going up as well. As a result of America's latest war in the Middle East, used EVs have appreciated by just over 5 percent since February. Despite the stronger pricing, used EV sales have been strong this year—up 25 percent year over year by May, although <a href="https://www.coxautoinc.com/insights/ev-market-monitor-june-2026/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a weaker June</a> has brought overall sales up just over 20 percent year over year, according to the analysts at Cox Automotive.</span></p>
<p>Used EVs also hang around on dealer lots a lot less than new ones—the same analysts at Cox found just 38 days' supply of used EVs in June, but 81 days for new EVs. And much of the demand is at the cheaper end of the spectrum, <a href="https://www.recurrentauto.com/research/used-electric-vehicle-buying-report">say the analysts at Recurrent</a>. In previous installments of our used EV buyers' guide, we've already looked at the most affordable used EVs, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/04/25000-buys-plenty-of-used-evs-here-are-some-options/">ending last time at $25,000</a>—EVs that <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/07/first-time-ev-buyers-in-california-can-now-claim-a-new-rebate/">may now qualify for a $1,750 rebate</a> if you're in California. Today we're looking at used EVs that cost between $25,000 and $30,000, and according to Autotrader's search, there are more than 9,000 used EVs for sale in that price range.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>Although shredded iceberg lettuce at Taco Bell restaurants has been a prime suspect in an explosive outbreak of the diarrheal parasite <em>Cyclospora</em>, a new report from the Food and Drug Administration finally reveals where all the contaminated lettuce was sold—and only a sliver of it went to Taco Bell locations.</p>
<p>The feces-tainted lettuce was sourced from Mexico and sold by Taylor Farms, a mammoth produce provider based in California. Taylor Farms has drawn scrutiny for its ties to the Trump administration and reluctance to provide information amid the outbreak, which has now sickened over 23,000 people across 47 states, killing two and sending over 500 others to the hospital. Taylor Farms reportedly attempted to delay issuing a recall amid the illnesses and, since then, has refused to clearly report how much tainted lettuce it recalled and where all of it had been shipped.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ires/?Event=99453">FDA's Enforcement Report</a> finally provides some answers: Taylor Farms recalled 236,192 cases of lettuce due to potential <em>Cyclospora</em> contamination. Of those, only 5,900—just shy of 2.5 percent—were sold to Yum, the parent company of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC.                             <![CDATA[<p>Global warming is leading to more extremely hot weather. There is perhaps no more obvious consequence of climate change. But changing how we analyze this problem can still help scientists think about it in a different way that may yield surprises.</p>
<p>Generally, studies on heat extremes work with some combination of daily minimum, maximum, and mean temperatures. Sometimes they focus on multi-day heatwaves using those metrics, since the discomfort and health impacts increase for longer events. There are different thresholds you can use to define extreme heat in these analyses, either based on past statistics or on the human body’s physiological limits.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>In 2018, 20,000 Google employees worldwide made headlines when they staged <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Google_walkouts">a walkout</a> to <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/11/google-offices-from-mountain-view-to-atlanta-protest-sexual-misconduct/">protest how</a> the company had handled sexual misconduct allegations against key corporate executives, among other grievances. One of the organizers was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claire_Stapleton">Claire Stapleton</a>, a communications specialist whose distinctive voice and ability to channel the corporate ethos had once earned her the internal moniker "Bard of Google."</p>
<p>Six months later, a disillusioned Stapleton resigned, claiming she had been demoted during the most recent restructuring as retaliation for helping to spearhead the walkout. The story of how she went from enthusiastic cheerleader to proactive dissident, and the many lessons she learned along the way, are featured in her new book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dont-Be-Evil-Bosses-Promises/dp/0063465140"><em>Don't Be Evil: Bad Bosses, Fake Promises, and My Escape from Big Tech—A Biting Memoir of Twelve Years Inside Google</em></a>.</p>
<p>Stapleton didn't set out to be a rabble-rouser. When she joined Google out of college in 2007, it was like "getting the golden ticket in <em>Willy Wonka</em>," she told Ars. Awareness of her good fortune offset any initial uneasiness or skepticism, although Stapleton was sufficiently independent-minded not to move into what was then Google's new corporate housing development in Mountain View, California.                             <![CDATA[<p>The Federal Communications Commission has been shorthanded throughout President Trump's second term, but it's about to get a new commissioner. Unsurprisingly, Trump is breaking a historical norm with a nomination that would give Republicans a 3-1 advantage on the FCC.</p>
<p>Historically, the president and Senate worked together to ensure that the president's party maintained only a one-vote majority. Normally, the president's party has three FCC members while the minority party has two.</p>
<p>Instead of the typical 3-2 split, the FCC has operated with a 2-1 Republican majority during Trump's second term. On Friday, Trump <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/08/nominations-sent-to-the-senate-e61c/">nominated</a> Republican Danielle Thumann Severs to take one of the empty spots. Thumann Severs, a lawyer, has been working as FCC Chairman Brendan Carr's senior counsel.                             <![CDATA[<p>Imagine that you share a ride to work with the same colleague most mornings. As it passes by a license plate reader, the camera records the car, which can be linked through vehicle records to its registered owner. Beside it, another sensor detects signals broadcast by devices traveling nearby, such as your phone and your colleague’s smartwatch.</p>
<p>After enough trips, software may treat some of those devices as a recurring electronic signature associated with the vehicle. Weeks later, one of the same device signals appears alongside a different car connected to an investigation. The signal itself may not contain its owner’s name, but its previous association with a known vehicle gives investigators another clue they can use to work out who was carrying the device.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.leonardocompany-us.com/lpr/elsag-signaltrace">SignalTrace</a>, a system marketed by the security company <a href="https://www.leonardocompany-us.com/">Leonardo</a>, is designed to work alongside automatic license plate readers. The company says it can recognize groups of consumer devices that regularly move together, then associate them with license plate records and time-stamped locations.                             <![CDATA[<p>Last week, a researcher outlined what he said was a “novel attack surface” in passkeys, the new authentication paradigm that offers a more secure alternative to password-based methods. In fact, the attacks demonstrated in the post are neither novel nor unique to passkeys. This distinction is important because the research has generated confusion among end users and security professionals as they assess whether this new mechanism is truly safe to use.</p>
<p>The attack is called Pass-ta-key—a blending of the word passkey with the phrase “pass the key” and a nod to a plate of pasta. Arie Olshtein, a researcher at security firm Palo Alto Networks, described in a <a href="https://unit42.paloaltonetworks.com/passwordless-authentication-security-risks/">post</a> last week how Pass-ta-key could obtain all passkeys stored in the Google Password Manager app (GPM) for Windows when it’s running on a machine infected with malware.</p>
<p>This came as a surprise to many people because they believed passkeys are stored exclusively in the trusted platform manager (TPM), the locked-down enclave in a hardened silicon chip that’s reserved for storing cryptographic keys and other highly sensitive information on Windows machines.
