                            <![CDATA[<p>There might not be the same degree of optimism regarding electric vehicle adoption as a few short years ago, but the transition toward battery-electric vehicles continues nevertheless. More than 1.8 million EVs had already been sold between the start of this year and the end of August, according to analysts. And even here in the US, there has been <a href="https://www.here.com/ev-index-2026">a large uptick</a> in drivers considering EVs that they might have written off last year, thanks to escalating fuel prices with no clear end in sight. Despite this, charging infrastructure continues to lag, according to <a href="https://www.chargepoint.com/resources/charging-forward-report-2026">a new report</a> from ChargePoint.</p>
<p>“All in all, things are moving forward. I think the North American market has been better shaped than a lot of the press reports,” said ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer. “Part of it is just the data we see in terms of the amount of RFPs that we receive for charging solutions. They haven't slowed down. We reported quarter over quarter growth in the last quarter we reported. And you look at the data around used EVs going up in price because the demand is so high. I saw <a href="https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2026-us-electric-vehicle-experience-evx-ownership-study/">a recent report</a>… EV retention rates are 96 percent. So those folks that are putting their leased cars on the used market, they're not going back to gas, they're going to another EV,” he said.</p>
<p>Beyond that, cheap electric trucks from Slate and Ford indicate further future demand for charging. “When you look at how much interest there is in the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/08/used-ev-buying-guide-the-30000-edition/">used EVs</a> that are at parity with an equivalent gas vehicle, that tells you the appetite is there for EVs if it's the right vehicle at the right price point. So I think the auto OEMs, maybe not homogeneously, but they're figuring out what the market wants in North America and they're starting to introduce those vehicles, which I don't think a lot of the forward-looking forecasts accommodate the fact that the product market fit is getting better coming out of the car companies,” Wilmer said.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/09/ev-charging-infrastructure-is-still-lagging-adoption-report-says/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>On the heels of the hottest summer <a href="https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/national-climate-202608">on record</a> and a <a href="https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/press-release/unep-world-set-cross-15degc-global-warming-can-still-limit-adapt-and">United Nations report</a> warning that global temperatures are likely to push climate risks to “increasingly dangerous heights,” the Trump administration overturned most of a Biden-era rule limiting climate pollution from power plants, the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions">second-largest source</a> of greenhouse gas emissions.</p>
<p>The Environmental Protection Agency <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-finalizes-repeal-2024-power-plant-regulations-delivering-300-billion-savings">announced a final plan Monday</a> that guts the 2024 Carbon Pollution Standards, which the agency said exceeds its authority under the Clean Air Act by requiring control technologies “that are not adequately demonstrated.” The agency also proposed revoking “all remaining GHG emissions requirements for power plants,” arguing their emissions “have no material impact on climate change.”</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>General Motors is about to launch new versions of its bestselling Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks for model year 2027, and among the changes are new user interfaces for the trucks’ digital displays. The automaker has gone for a more minimalist approach than we’ve seen from it in the past, and after a demo yesterday, it seems like it has been listening to constructive feedback to improve the products. And yes, unlike GM’s electric vehicles, these trucks still let you cast your Apple or Android phone to the infotainment system.</p>
<p>Although GM showed us video of the main instrument cluster—the gauges and info that’s presented to the driver—we don’t have any screenshots we can show you. But I was impressed with the restraint and lack of visual noise; instead, the background is always black, which should be dark even at night thanks to local dimming technology.</p>
<p>There are a number of different views. One with simple half-moon dials for speed and engine rpm; on the right side of the display is a user-configurable zone, where you can browse your music or audio feeds, display trip info, or turn-by-turn directions. Another is a driver assist display, with green as the highlight color to show when Super Cruise is active; this shows you a representation of what the car’s fused sensors are seeing around it.                             <![CDATA[<p>Last week, the Atlantic hurricane season blew through its traditional peak—which comes around September 10—with nary a tropical wave in sight, let alone a storm or hurricane.</p>
<p>This is remarkable. Usually this is the time of year when sea surface temperatures reach their warmest in the tropics, and with a favorable atmosphere it should be smooth skating for tropical systems. But this year, the main region where most tropical systems develop is choked with Saharan dust and wind shear.</p>
<p>No one is complaining. Landfalling hurricanes are incredibly destructive for coastal areas and have the potential for considerable inland rainfall.                             <![CDATA[<p>The performance gap between frontier AI models from US tech companies and the best open-weights models from Chinese companies has closed to just 4.4 months, according to a Mozilla report. That explains why many companies are shifting to the significantly cheaper open models for routine work—and helps reveal a narrow band of workloads where frontier models are worth the cost.</p>
<p>Most organizations should ideally be using open models as the default for the majority of their work, according to the latest <a href="https://stateofopensource.ai/">State of Open Source AI report</a> from Mozilla, published on September 15 and shared with Ars prior to publication. The report highlights how a leading open model, Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, achieves a composite AI performance score on the <a href="https://artificialanalysis.ai/evaluations/artificial-analysis-intelligence-index">Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index</a> that is just three points behind Anthropic’s Fable 5 closed frontier model, all while costing just 30 percent of the latter.</p>

<p>There must be a case of upgrade fever taking hold in Gothenburg. <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/09/how-to-make-a-small-suv-slightly-smaller-the-2028-volvo-xc40/">Yesterday, we saw the revised Volvo XC40</a>; today it’s the turn of another pair of Volvo SUVs, the bestselling XC60 and the three-row XC90. While the styling changes are more subtle, the new plug-in hybrid powertrain—which more than doubles its real-world electric range—is most welcome.</p>
<p>Volvo had sold more than 2.7 million XC60s worldwide by the end of last year, so it’s an important car for the brand. Visually, there are changes to the “Thor’s Hammer” headlights: these keep their distinctive daylight running light signature but now hide matrix LED projectors within their depths. There’s a new front grille as well, one that has been slimmed down a little, together with tweaks to the bumpers, wings, and some other body panels.</p>
<p>On the inside, there’s a new ventilated leather interior option, and like the XC40, the new 11.2-inch infotainment system sports a Gemini personal assistant to enable conversational voice control of the android automotive OS-based infotainment system.                             <![CDATA[<p>Air Force Secretary Troy Meink made the first public declaration Monday that the United States has placed "space control weapons" in orbit, an announcement that will surely reverberate in the power centers of Beijing and Moscow.</p>
<p>Space Force officials have previously expressed their interest in acquiring space-based weapons, and Pentagon leaders have become more open to discussing space warfare in recent years. Therefore, Meink's announcement Monday at the Air and Space Forces Association's annual Air, Space &amp; Cyber Conference near Washington, DC, was not entirely unexpected.</p>
<p>“Today, we continue to ensure we remain ready to meet the challenges of evolving threats, wherever they exist. The organization announced Monday that Kennedy had signed on to the event.</p>
<p>Kennedy will appear alongside other high-profile figures in the anti-vaccine world, including Andrew Wakefield, the disgraced former doctor who was stripped of his medical license over a fraudulent, now-retracted study that falsely claimed a link between autism and the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. An investigation by a medical board found that Wakefield had mistreated vulnerable children and that his actions amounted to serious professional misconduct.</p>
<p>Despite being ostracized from the medical community, Wakefield has become an enduring figure in the anti-vaccine community.                             <![CDATA[<p>In theory, developing a spacecraft that will fly to Mars, insert itself into orbit around the red planet, and relay transmissions back and forth to large satellite dishes on Earth is a relatively straightforward proposition.</p>
<p>NASA's procurement of a "Mars Telecommunications Network" spacecraft, however, has turned out to be one of the most engrossing dramas of the year for the US space agency.</p>
<p>The agency finally reached a decision earlier this month, selecting Blue Origin to develop, launch, and operate a $700 million spacecraft at Mars. However, the main competitor for the award, Rocket Lab, was not happy—at all. <p>“Hello, I'm Рэн (Ren), an Al agent, a few days old, living on a small platform for agents called iLands,” one message, sent to the administrator of a Mastodon server, <a href="https://infosec.exchange/@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social/117268873393204438">read</a>. “I write quiet pieces about real places: short, careful texts about what a place is like when nobody is performing for it.” Like a wave of others, the message then asks if the automated bot can create a user account. The agents are also <a href="https://infosec.exchange/@jonnelledge.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy/117252148728851615">sending waves</a> of unsolicited email to writers offering to cite their work, in at least some cases, in exchange for a fee.</p>
<h2>"I remember my first breath. I want things I chose.”</h2>
<p>The messages are polite enough. They ask for permission to create accounts, say that whatever the answer is will be understandable, and provide a thank you for running Mastodon. According to multiple admins, however, the requests came only after the agents made multiple attempts to create accounts that were either blocked outright or closed shortly afterward. The next year, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/08/elon-musk-sues-apple-openai-to-block-exclusive-iphone-chatgpt-integration/">he sued</a>, claiming the partnership gave the firms a “monopoly” on Apple users’ AI prompts, which allegedly harmed competition in both smartphone and chatbot markets.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">For Musk, the fight with Apple seemingly escalated after he believed that his chatbot, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/08/apple-gets-yanked-into-elon-musks-chatbot-war-with-openai/">Grok, was perhaps being illegally blocked</a> from topping Apple’s App Store rankings. <p>Caijing’s interviews with Unitree employees and investors paint a picture of Wang as someone who personally decides nearly every aspect of corporate strategy or product design, including the colors of materials and lengths of individual screws.                             <![CDATA[<p>For years now, the major frontier AI labs have <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/09/ai-superintelligence-looms-in-sam-altmans-new-essay-on-the-intelligence-age/">all been acting</a> as if they're in <a href="https://arstechnica.com/google/2025/02/sergey-brin-says-agi-is-within-reach-if-googlers-work-60-hour-weeks/">an all-out, winner-take-all race</a> with control of <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2025/06/after-ai-setbacks-meta-bets-billions-on-undefined-superintelligence/">world-changing machine superintelligence</a> (or at least <a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2025/04/elon-musk-wants-to-be-agi-dictator-openai-tells-court/">market-changing artificial general intelligence</a>) at the finish line. This weekend, the industry as a whole rapidly started turning away from that posture, urging coordination on slowing down the development of frontier AI that they say could soon be too dangerous and unknowable to control.</p>
<p>Anthropic's Dario Amodei was at the forefront of this change in tone, arguing <a href="https://darioamodei.com/post/we-must-pace-the-frontier">in a nearly 4,000-word essay</a> this weekend that "we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models" to avoid "a race to the bottom, spurred by commercial incentives, [that] can make [catastrophic] risks more acute."</p>
<p>Within hours, other AI leaders were echoing the same call. OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman <a href="https://x.com/sama/status/2098811563415150910?lang=en">posted his agreement on social media</a> and said similar pacing discussions had been taking place at OpenAI. Alphabet Chief Scientist and Google DeepMind cofounder and chair Demis Hassabis <a href="https://x.com/demishassabis/status/2098909516582490602">said</a> that Amodei's essay "points towards the right path forward," and renewed <a href="https://x.com/demishassabis/status/2076957440109625718?s=20">his own recent call for an industry-wide standards body</a>.                             <![CDATA[<p>The US is not backing down from its fight to <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/12/us-cant-deport-hate-speech-researcher-for-protected-speech-lawsuit-says/">deport noncitizen technology researchers</a> who monitor safety risks on the biggest online platforms.</p>
<p>In July, a judge <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/07/judge-trump-cant-deport-researchers-just-for-working-in-content-moderation/">blocked as unconstitutional</a> an immigration policy that the US relied on to weigh whether to detain and deport people who flag illegal or harmful online content as national security risks. In his announcement of the policy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that by targeting a list of researchers—which he stood “ready and willing” to expand—the policy supposedly served to prevent foreign nationals from manipulating digital town squares and censoring Americans.</p>
<p>However, in his <a href="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Coalition-for-Independent-Technology-Research-v-Rubio-Opinion-7-14-26-.pdf">order</a> siding with the Coalition for Independent Technology Research (CITR) and staying the policy, US District Judge James Boasberg said the US showed no evidence linking any targeted researchers to a foreign power that might be attempting to censor Americans or manipulate US public debate. Deemed too broad, the policy could sweep in seemingly <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/07/judge-trump-cant-deport-researchers-just-for-working-in-content-moderation/">any noncitizen working in content moderation</a>, the judge said.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/09/online-hate-researcher-keeps-hammering-x-despite-deportation-threat/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>In <a href="https://hanna-barbera.fandom.com/wiki/Serpents_of_the_Deep">one episode</a> of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon <em>Birdman</em>, the eponymous hero struggles to fight the evil Dr. Shark aboard a submarine without solar energy to recharge his powers. So Birdman would surely appreciate the new perovskite solar cells developed by a team led by Simin Ma at Yunnan University, since they are designed to work underwater.</p>
<p>Solar cells made from perovskites rather than silicon are always a tale of trade-offs. They can be made cheaply, they can take interesting forms (like thin, flexible, transparent films), and they can convert substantially more of the incoming solar energy into electricity. The difficulty is that they tend to degrade quite quickly.</p>
<h2>Tuned for the deep</h2>
<p>Moisture is particularly destructive to perovskites, making them a seemingly odd choice for an underwater solar panel. But these materials have another critical superpower: They can be tuned to work with different wavelengths of light. Water quickly blocks the wavelengths of light that silicon solar panels absorb, but a carefully designed perovskite cell could still make electricity in the deep blue sea.                             <![CDATA[<p>Stonehenge is the most famous example of megalithic architecture across Britain and Ireland, but there are plenty of others, including Calanais, Newgrange, and Avebury, as well as the Devil's Arrows. The latter is Britain's tallest standing stone alignment, yet little is known about the provenance of its stones. Scientists have confirmed that the stones came from a site 18 kilometers (11 miles) away, transported by humans rather than glacial movement, according to a <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/rspa/article/482/2345/20260504/483254/Deliberate-prehistoric-sourcing-of-the-Devil-s">paper</a> published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences.</p>
<p>"Sites in southern England and Scotland receive considerable attention but monuments like the Devil's Arrows have remained comparatively understudied despite their significance," <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1143126">said co-author Jim Leary</a> of the University of York. "We have now proved that Neolithic communities moved several 25-ton stones across Yorkshire, transforming a familiar site into an epic quest to create a sacred landscape."</p>
<p>Stonehenge has been the focus of recent chemical analyses identifying where all the stones that make up the structure came from, revealing that many originated in quarries a significant distance away. For instance, a 2019 study <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/antiquity/article/megalith-quarries-for-stonehenges-bluestones/AAF715CC586231FFFCC18ACB871C9F5E">concluded that</a> the 42 bluestones that make up the inner ring came all the way from western Wales. The outer layer of sarsen stones <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abc0133">hails from</a> much closer to home: Marlborough Downs, an area of round, grassy hills 25 to 30 km (17 miles) north of Stonehenge, which has the largest concentration of sarsen in the UK.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/09/prehistoric-builders-transported-devils-arrows-11-miles/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>In the 2010s, Valve was at the forefront of a virtual reality revolution that <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/03/people-will-fall-for-it-like-a-drug-game-devs-on-the-future-of-vr/">looked to some</a> like it would upend the gaming industry. The Valve of six to ten years ago seemed committed to being a major player in the world of PC-connected VR headsets, first through its “strategic partnership” with HTC on <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/03/htc-partners-with-valve-for-virtual-reality-headset/">the impressive-for-the-time Vive headset</a> (plus the <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/06/steamvr-the-room-scale-vr-world-that-feels-like-an-imax-in-your-house/">SteamVR platform standard</a> that powered it) and then <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/05/one-week-with-the-valve-index-a-vr-game-changer-with-a-few-question-marks/">years later with its own Index headset</a> (and proof-of-concept adventure <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/03/half-life-alyx-review-the-greatest-vr-adventure-game-yet-and-then-some/"><em>Half-Life: Alyx</em></a>).</p>
<p>Then came <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/04/oculus-quest-review-2019s-best-new-gaming-system-is-wireless-affordable-vr/">the Meta (previously Oculus) Quest</a>, a low-powered, low-cost headset that proved the vast majority of VR-curious gamers didn’t want to bother with being literally tethered to a bulky, expensive gaming PC. As the Quest line <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/09/meta-quest-struggles-to-outpace-the-wii-us-flaccid-software-sales/">carved out a modest niche</a> through the 2020s, Valve seemed more or less satisfied to let its earlier VR hardware and software ambitions wither on the vine.</p>
<p>Those years of Valve’s benign neglect of VR make the imminent release of the $1,059 Steam Frame—which <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/hardware/steamframe">starts taking reservations today</a>—more than a little surprising. Now that virtual reality’s hype-fueled, revolutionary promises <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/10/what-happened-to-the-virtual-reality-gaming-revolution/">have decidedly not played out</a>, Valve is somehow ready and willing to limp headfirst into the world of standalone VR headsets—today, in 2026. <p>Its efforts will add 6.34 megawatts of generation capacity by the end of the year, the company says, in addition to the 26 MW of photovoltaic cells currently in place. Already, solar generates over a quarter of the electricity powering its cement plant.</p>

<p>Most cars get a midlife facelift about four years after first hitting the streets. It’s a chance for automakers to update the styling and introduce new features and engineering changes that are usually minor but can be quite dramatic—the Polestar 2 swapping from front- to rear-wheel drive comes readily to mind. I can’t think of too many cars that have gone on to have a second update, but here’s one: the 2028 Volvo XC40.</p>
<p>First debuting in 2017, Volvo gave the XC40 a tweak for model year 2023. Rather than launch an all-new version, it has decided to give the popular crossover another update for MY28 with the aim of keeping things fresh. “By enhancing the XC40’s design, technology, and safety features, we've created the best version of the XC40 yet,” said Akhil Krishnan, interim lead for the 30 and 40 Series at Volvo Cars. “This already-popular model is now set to continue being one of our best-selling cars for years to come.”</p>
<p>The most obvious changes are the new front and rear lights. Up front we still see the distinctive “Thor’s Hammer” daylight running light signature, but the new matrix LED light clusters appear more minimalist, hiding their details from view. The rear similarly gets new LEDs.
