                            <![CDATA[<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday released <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/schoolvaxview/data/">data on the vaccination rates</a> of US kindergarteners in the 2025–2026 school year, revealing that rates have once again decreased from the previous school year.</p>
<p>Vaccination rates have been slipping since the 2019–2020 school year, when the US had obtained rates of around 95 percent, the threshold needed to keep outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases from spreading in communities. The latest data shows the US is moving further away from that target.</p>
<p>Nationally, only 92.4 percent of kindergartners were vaccinated with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine in the 2025–2026 school year, down from 92.5 percent last year.                             <![CDATA[<p>Three former SpaceX engineers have switched their attention from making rocket engines to manufacturing steel parts by using AI-driven software and robots. Their immediate goal involves establishing a prototype factory that can automate most of the steel fabrication process for crucial infrastructure components by 2027.</p>
<p>The startup, <a href="https://1872.ai/">called 1872</a>, officially launched on July 22 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its Factory One facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company is initially focused on automating the manufacturing of steel skids—rectangular steel frames that can provide a moveable foundation for modular buildings—with the goal of supplying customers who are developing AI data centers or small modular nuclear reactors.</p>
<p>“We're building towards autonomy, but we're not necessarily building in a dogmatic fashion towards full autonomy,” Dan Summers, CEO of 1872, told Ars. “We may achieve 80 percent autonomous operations, and we may decide that it makes sense to stop there because there's just diminishing returns to go to full 100 percent.”</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/08/former-spacex-engineers-are-building-a-robotic-factory-for-making-steel-parts/">Read full article</a></p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>DURATÓN, Spain—I'll say it: I'm hooked. Standing in the shadow of the Moon is one of the rarest opportunities to directly sense the mechanics of our Solar System, when the dance between three celestial bodies slides into perfect alignment. It's a mathematical miracle whose rarity and grandeur are made possible by the relative sizes and distances of the Moon and the Sun from Earth. Not every planet is so lucky.</p>
<p>The Moon's shadow crisscrossed the American heartland twice in less than seven years, <a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/08/eclipse-2017-excited-about-a-case-of-the-mondays/">first in 2017</a> and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/04/moments-of-totality-how-ars-experienced-the-eclipse/">again in 2024</a>. I was fortunate to witness both. The experiences left me too impatient to wait for the next total solar eclipse in the continental United States in far-off 2044.</p>
<p>That's what pulled me to the plains of north-central Spain last week. This land of wide open spaces, ancient churches and castles, and vast sunflower fields, all baking under the blinding August Sun, seemed like the perfect location to enter the path of totality. <p>Over the past few months, a spate of Wisconsin towns and cities have withdrawn from Flock deals over privacy and trust concerns. As they did so, another issue revealed itself: With each city that leaves, the Flock network becomes less useful to the cities that remain. And cities are starting to notice.</p>
<p>Consider Dane County, which includes the city of Madison. It's one of the most populous counties in Wisconsin. It was also a significant Flock user, with a contract for 24 license plate cameras.                             <![CDATA[<p>The Supreme Court today rejected Verizon's attempt to get a $47 million refund from the Federal Communications Commission. In a <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/orders/courtorders/081726zor_8m59.pdf">list of orders</a> issued by the court, Verizon's petition was denied without explanation.</p>
<p>The denial apparently ends any possibility of Verizon asking a lower court to review the fine and order the FCC to issue a refund. However, AT&amp;T and T-Mobile are continuing to challenge similar fines on grounds that selling device-location data did not violate US telecom law.</p>
<p>AT&amp;T, T-Mobile, and Verizon were <a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/04/fcc-fines-big-three-carriers-196m-for-selling-users-real-time-location-data/">fined a total of $196 million</a> in 2024 for selling mobile users’ real-time location data without their customers' consent.                             <![CDATA[<p>Petlibro founder and CEO York Wu provided more information about an outage that left users unable to control their smart pet feeders through the companion app and, in some reported cases, left them with hungry pets.</p>
<p>Petlibro, a company owned by Shenzhen, China-headquartered firm Shenzhen Libro Technology Co., first acknowledged the outage on Tuesday at 5 am PT. At 7 pm PT on Wednesday, Petlibro said the outage was resolved. Notably, some people online <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Petlibro/comments/1vn7xiy/comment/p3faulq/">reported different information</a> at the time, and some claimed to still have problems <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Petlibro/comments/1vopk14/comment/p3rit0k/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button">as of August 13</a>.</p>

But this was hard to prove until now, as 404 Media <a href="https://www.404media.co/we-tracked-a-shipment-of-rare-books-it-ended-at-an-amazon-ai-training-facility/">reports</a> that an Airtag hidden in a rare book shows that at least one tech giant, in the race to advance its frontier models, is behind some of the bulk orders: Amazon.</p>
<p>On Monday, 404 Media revealed that it had connected with a bookseller who agreed to plant an Airtag in a rare book that was part of a bulk order. That Airtag was then tracked to an Amazon AI training facility in Las Vegas that housed a team focused on tearing books from their spines and scanning pages, 404 Media reported. Apparently tone-deaf to the escalating backlash over destructive book scanning, a logo on the door of that team’s warehouse, VGT3, showed a <em>Tyrannosaurus rex</em> preparing to devour a book, 404 Media documented.</p>
<h2>Amazon deflects</h2>

                            <![CDATA[<p>This past weekend saw Monterey Car Week at perhaps its most excessive ever. The auctions set records, including $42.9 million for one of six Shelby Daytona Coupes and $40 million for Ferrari's first <a href="https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/05/the-most-controversial-ferrari-ever-meet-the-luce-its-first-ever-ev/">Luce electric vehicle</a> to reach private hands. Hypercars and restomods with seven-figure price tags filled the California peninsula, and yet I know I'm not alone in mustering little enthusiasm for this kind of thing. Which is why today I'm writing about the antithesis of all that: a hand-built, low-cost, efficient, and remarkably cheap car that suggests one possible future for driving enthusiasts, should we choose to take it.</p>
<p>This is because the answer cannot just be "add more power and go even faster." Forget hypercars; even regular sports cars like a Porsche 718 Boxster or Toyota Supra have more performance than you can comfortably use on the road, and each version gets more power and costs more than the last. Add the cost of tires, consumables, a thirsty engine, and the fact that cars are all so ludicrously expensive to begin with these days, and soon the whole thing starts to look unsustainable.</p>

<p>Robert Ely's Gasolini AR1, as featured on Jonny Smith's "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8D3dZ_kHrY">The Late Brake Show"</a> yesterday, is none of those things. <p>The $5.5 trillion company owned SpaceX stock worth nearly $21 billion at the end of June, according to an SEC filing on Friday. Elon Musk’s rocket conglomerate’s shares have fallen sharply since its June initial public offering, meaning Nvidia’s stake would now be worth $17 billion.</p>

                            <![CDATA[<p>During a medieval siege, a trebuchet scored a chance hit on an unlucky defender. A small boulder slammed into his upper back at close to 300 kilometers an hour, smashing bones and crushing him beneath its weight.</p>
<p>The man’s skeleton lay beneath the chapel of Scotland’s Stirling Castle, along with the remains of several other people who had clearly died violent deaths. But this one, known to us only as Skeleton 150 (or as “trebuchet guy” in your faithful correspondent’s notes), stood out even among that battle-damaged crowd because most of his upper body had been shattered. According to University of Bradford paleopathologist Jo Buckberry, who <a href="https://cfp.dainst.org/25th-european-ppa-meeting/talk/GHF9V8/">presented her research</a> at the 25th European Meeting of the Paleopathology Association last week, Skeleton 150 is the only known trebuchet casualty in history.</p>
<h2>A shattered skeleton</h2>
<p>Skeleton 150 was in terrible shape, even for a dead guy. The man’s skull had broken in 61 separate places, and another 60 jagged bits of bone were distributed across his ribs.                             <![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 1965, a presidential advisory panel <a href="https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/document/31937-document-2-white-house-report-restoring-quality-our-environment-report-environmental">issued a report</a> warning that pervasive chemical and carbon pollution was harming environmental health and changing the climate. Five years later, President Richard Nixon signed the Clean Air Act.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since that 1970 law and its amendments were passed, combined emissions of a half-dozen harmful air pollutants from vehicles and industrial sources have decreased by <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/air-pollution-trends-continue-link-clean-air-and-strong-economy">nearly 80 percent</a>.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w30882">mounting evidence</a> shows that pollution from wildfire smoke is eclipsing those air-quality gains. The unchecked burning of fossil fuels is creating warmer, drier conditions that make wildfires more intense and destructive, and blanket communities in toxic smoke that is <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25460628/">more harmful</a> than pollution from other sources.</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/08/wildfire-smoke-now-bigger-prenatal-threat-than-human-sources-of-air-pollution/">Read full article</a></p>

<p>Marvel's streaming TV portfolio has kind of been all over the place: a handful of hits, a few misses, and a bunch of middling offerings. One of the standout hits was <em>WandaVision</em>, followed by an excellent sequel (of sorts), <em>Agatha All Along</em>. <em>VisionQuest</em> will complete the trilogy. Yes, Vision (Paul Bettany) died in <em>Infinity War</em>, but <em>WandaVision</em> resurrected an all-white version whose memories were restored in the finale.                             <![CDATA[<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Saturday that his country struck the Progress Rocket Space Center deep within Russia using ground-launched cruise missiles.</p>
<p>"In Russia’s Samara region, one of the key enterprises within Roscosmos—the Progress Center, which was involved, among other things, in electronics production–was hit," <a href="https://x.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/2088547091471614397">Zelenskyy said</a> on the social media site X. "Flamingo missiles were used. A good achievement."</p>
<p>The largest city in the Samara Oblast, about 900 km from the Ukrainian border, Samara is home to Russia's most important manufacturer of rockets. The Progress Center assembles the workhorse vehicle for Russia, the Soyuz-2 vehicle, as well as the newer Soyuz-5 rocket. So I feel a measure of comfort focusing on something concrete like the list of 368 utility-scale plants that began operation from January to June, according to <a href="https://www.eia.gov/electricity/data/eia860m/">data from the US Energy Information Administration</a>. The group is dominated by utility-scale solar.</p>

<p>“The NCSC has received a notification indicating that active abuse of this vulnerability has been observed on multiple systems on which port 5900 was accessible from the Internet,” the Netherlands National Cyber Security Centrum <a href="https://advisories.ncsc.nl/2026/ncsc-2026-0280.html">warned</a> earlier this week. “In all these cases, root had been accessed on the affected system and a Monero crypto miner had been placed.”</p>
<h2>Do you know if your screen sharing is on?</h2>
<p>The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-65400, received a patch from Apple last week for macOS <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/148170">Tahoe</a>, <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/148171">Sequoia</a>, and <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/148172">Sonoma</a>. The vulnerability, with a severity rating of 7.1 out of 10, stems from a bug in the macOS screen sharing capability, which allows a remote party to view the screen and control the keyboard and mouse while a machine is turned on.                             <![CDATA[<p>The first flight of the largest battery-electric aircraft to take to the skies lasted nearly half an hour while costing just $5 of electricity. That aviation feat comes at a time when jet fuel prices have skyrocketed because of the US war with Iran.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.heartaerospace.com/newsroom/heart-aerospace-completes-first-flight-of-world-s-largest-electric-aircraft">test flight</a> of Heart Aerospace’s <a href="https://www.heartaerospace.com/x1">X1 demonstrator aircraft</a> took place at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York on August 12. The X1 aircraft is comparable in size to a small regional airliner and can achieve a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds with the help of four wing-mounted electric motors. The battery-electric propulsion system delivered more than one megawatt of power during the maiden flight.</p>
<p>All-electric aircraft can offer quieter and cleaner flight without the emissions that come from burning jet fuel.                             <![CDATA[<p>A judge has identified what appears to be the first time a US plaintiff has attempted to hide text in court filings that only an artificial intelligence system can read in a bid to win a case.</p>
<p>In a <a href="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Elliott-v-New-York-Bariatric-Group-Memorandum-of-Decision-8-6-26.pdf">decision</a> published last week, Connecticut judge Walter Spader Jr. confirmed that the hidden text had no impact in a case where a man alleged a healthcare provider was improperly withholding access to records. The court weighed his filing on the merits, Spader said, but nevertheless, the attempted attack sets a “dangerous” precedent. This will likely not be the last time US courts see the malicious tactic, as AI tools become more commonplace in court systems.</p>
<p>Trying to scramble any AI systems potentially influencing the court’s reading of his filing, the secret instructions were “formatted to be invisible to a human reader while remaining fully legible to any software that reads the document’s text,” Spader said.                             <![CDATA[<p>A state court in Washington this week ordered Kalshi to stop offering sports gambling and a variety of other wagers on its prediction market. King County Superior Court Judge John McHale issued a preliminary injunction in response to a lawsuit filed against Kalshi by the state of Washington.</p>
<p>"The order requires Kalshi to stop offering, accepting, or facilitating wagers on sports, elections, politics, entertainment, culture, tech and science, or mentions in Washington," said a <a href="https://www.atg.wa.gov/news/news-releases/judge-orders-kalshi-cease-numerous-washington-operations">press release</a> yesterday from Washington Attorney General Nick Brown. "Kalshi must implement an IP address and residency-based geofence by August 19 and a multi-source geofencing solution by September 2. This does not include all the wagers offered on Kalshi, but it includes a substantial part of their business, which in recent years has been increasingly driven by sports wagers."</p>
<p>Kalshi is not licensed by the state Gambling Commission and is not registered to conduct business in Washington, the <a href="https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/washington-state-kalshi.pdf">court order</a> said.                             <![CDATA[<p>After its cloud storage provider went defunct, a PBS affiliate decided to sue a data center provider to regain access to 50TB of TV shows, videos, and other data dating back 70 years.</p>
<p>As reported this week by <a href="https://current.org/2026/08/nine-pbs-sues-iron-mountain-over-blocked-access-to-archival-data/?wallit_nosession=1">Current</a>, a trade newspaper covering public broadcasting, St. Louis affiliate Nine PBS filed a lawsuit against Iron Mountain Data Centers on July 28, seeking access to the data. In the litigation filed in Denver District Court, Nine PBS says that its cloud storage provider, Open Source Storage (OSS), used one of Iron Mountain’s Denver data centers to store the channel’s data. However, OSS is being unresponsive, and Nine PBS says Iron Mountain has refused to release its data.</p>
<p>The data in question includes the station’s coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, East St. Louis’ history, <a href="https://ny.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/ess05.sci.ess.earthsys.flood/the-great-flood-of-1993/">The Great Flood of 1993</a>, and over 11,000 files, <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2026/07/29/st-louis-pbs-archives-denver-data-center-lawsuit/">The Denver Post</a> reported in July.
