Transformations

A showcase for artist Yvonne Parker, who uses porcelain, ceramic, metal and glass to create the contemporary, surreal fantasy pieces that comprise her “Fragmented Beauty” series. European-born and trained as a sculptor and New York-trained as an interior designer, Parker fuses all of her education in renovating buildings and then creating installations for them. Although Parker’s art has been exhibited across the United States, she often bounces between Florida and Pennsylvania, where her pieces are particularly popular. Whether working in collage, decoupage or mixed media, Parker has developed the porcelain rose as her signature. The exhibit runs through June 9.

From Picasso to Koons: The Artist as Jeweler

Serious artists lighten up to create beautiful, sometimes silly, pieces of personal ornamentation. The modern artists represented include Georges Braque, Max Ernst, Louise Nevelson, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Salvador Dalí, Jeff Koons, Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein and Anish Kapoor. The artists’ boundless creativity is wrapped up in these little-known, small-scale sculptures that were designed to be worn by family and friends. Although the theme may appear lightweight, the pieces are often made of precious metals. The collection includes necklaces, brooches, rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings and even a rosary. The exhibit of 200 works by 135 artists runs through July 21.

Elaine Defibaugh/Joshua Silver Banks

Defibaugh shines a new light on black light with “Illuminated Collage.” Toggling between New York and Miami, the award-winning abstract artist uses both black light and natural light to illuminate her fluorescent paintings. Contrasting cityscapes with landscapes and urban with rural settings, Defibaugh was inspired by her travels to the national parks, Time Square and the Vegas Strip. South Floridian Banks is an autistic abstract painter. The works featured in “Making His Mark” contain his trademark fusion of movement and order. Both exhibits run through May 26.

Misha Dacic & Vladimir Markovic

Genius may be 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration, but this program aims to combine both aspects. The world premiere, interactive performance includes not just live music, but live painting as well. Pianist Dacic’s performance of the mystical music of Scriabin and Mompou is intended to inspire artist Markovic to produce a painting live on stage. Dacic is known for his mastery of Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Ravel, while Markovic is a renowned muralist. “An Evening of Music & Painting” is presented as part of the Miami International Piano Festival, which has earned its global cred with 15 years of recitals celebrating musicians and composers from around the world.

Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition

Following in the footsteps of Ponce de Leon and De Soto, environmental photojournalist and eighth generation Floridian Carlton Ward Jr. last year led a small team through a 100-day, 1,000-mile journey from Everglades National Park north to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in southern Georgia. The explorers traveled by kayak, mountain bike, horse and foot and, not surprisingly, inspired a PBS-TV documentary. The result of their expedition is more than 50 large photographs and maps documenting Florida’s often overlooked interior. The interactive exhibit runs through June 11 and includes GPS coordinates that may be mapped to unlock additional video and interviews.
