Michel Lawrence from Inside Art interviews Camille Hannah about her work and practice. Camille's work can currently be seen at Artereal Gallery as part of Paint13 until June 1st, 2013.

"Harnessing the contemporary aesthetic of mediated visuality, my paintings are contextualized by their status as a non-photographic image in a world dominated by the screen, traversing the paradox between the prohibition of touch in relation to digital technology and art – and an erotic’s of painting. From this base these works reference the history of painting and the digital as a power. Through the use of visual strategies, large- scale format, and the reversal of the painted surface, the viewer is looking through a clear plastic ‘screen’ at the reverse of the work. These paintings aim to explore alternative models of spatio-temporal representation, creating spaces where multi-layered planes of realities force estrangement, triggering a perceptual shift in our viewing of the space/time continuum. They offer a new way to respond to what the ‘visual’ is, in a context of technical images, and by doing so, position the medium as an active participant throughout our digital future."

Launched in 2011, Sentience is an initiative of the Animal Rights Advocates Inc., a not-for-profit animal rights organisation based in Perth, WA.

Featuring work by a variety of international and Australian artists across a range of mediums, Sentience is a thought-provoking display of art exploring the lives of animals other than humans.

Amongst the participating artists of 2013, is Claude Jones, whom is currently undertaking a residency in The Netherlands. Claude's work often perversely transposes animals as both perpetrators and victims in her images, drawing focus on man’s double standards. The irony is that animals do not drug, cage and torture one another, train others to fight, race, perform tricks or slaughter en masse. Nor do they subscribe to the belief that circus animals take pleasure in performing, that greyhounds and horses enjoy racing, and that hunting is a "sport".

Sentience runs from 18-24 May 2013.

"Peripheral Visions carries multiple meanings and resonances. Most immediately, it refers to Australia's peripheral positioning within the international art market, of which New York is the epicenter. With London's art powerhouses Saatchi Gallery and the Royal Academy both staging surveys of Australian art in the next eighteen months, it seemed fitting to start this international engagement with the exceptional artistic talent emerging from Australia, in the partly Australian-run New York Gallery, Garis & Hahn." - Marissa Bateman, Curator

Liam has also been invited to exhibit a performance on the opening night of the show. Specifically created for Peripheral Visions, Liam will be performing 'Iridescent' (2013). The artist will be seated on a chair with a table that holds a bowl of silver iridescent glitter and adhesive. Over an hour, he will gradually cover his face and body with the glitter, pausing briefly to look up at viewers and make eye contact.

After four successful years in Paris, cutlog art fair will be launching its first New York edition from May 9-13, 2013. Approximately 45 galleries and curators will present art, installations, performances, talks, and films in a creative architecturally designed environment allowing each art project to have its own identity and a unique art interaction with the public.

cutlog NY will focus on showing cutting-edge and established galleries that promote the work of contemporary artists. The fair will foster new relationships between galleries, collectors and art institutions to form a collaborative platform for building new perspectives on contemporary art. cutlog NY aims to be a creative laboratory, showcasing works by artists from all over the world and offering them the opportunity to gain global visibility.

The five day event will take place in one of Manhattan’s most vibrant and creative area, the Lower East Side. Over the past years, the neighborhood has become a new hub for emerging and innovative galleries and cutlog NY will be a part of this growing community to become the downtown art fair. Occupying The Dutch Neo-Gothic building, a former public school (PS 160), cutlog NY will be hosted by the Clemente Soto Vélez Center at 107 Suffolk Street, between Rivington and Delancey Streets.

Each of the roughly 45 participants will present an original project featuring one or more works by artists selected by a jury of professionals. A selection of sculptures and installations will be displayed in the Clemente building and courtyard.

Artereal Gallery is excited to announce the formation of a new Curatorial Advisory Board for the gallery.

The board, which will work closely alongside the existing Artereal team on both the future direction of the gallery as well as exhibition programming and curatorial decisions, is comprised of three key founding board members: Lisa Corsi (Co-founder of SafARI and Managing Director of Artcell), Sebastian Goldspink (Founder and Director of Alaska Projects) and Francesca Valmorbida (previously of Artbank, the Biennale of Sydney and Sydney Contemporary Art Fair).

The Curatorial Advisory Board was envisioned by the gallery as a way to introduce multiple and disparate curatorial voices and visions into the gallery space whilst also challenging and expanding the traditional concept and role of the commercial gallery. Each of the board members has been carefully selected based on their talent and unique contribution to the local contemporary art scene – as well as for their diverse background, experience and areas of specialty. As part of their role with the gallery each board member will also be invited to curate one exhibition within the main gallery each year. The first of these exhibitions will be presented in the second half of 2013.

Originally established seven years ago as a space for contemporary art with a focus on exhibitions with significant international content and heavy curatorial influence, the gallery will continue to focus on presenting museum quality exhibitions which engage with experimental and cutting edge contemporary art practice. Although Artereal exists primarily as a commercial gallery, we do not fully fit within the context of the traditional model and our program also includes a blend of exhibitions which could be perhaps best categorised as typical of Artist Run Spaces (in that they are more experimental and ‘risky’) or Institutional spaces.

The concept for the Curatorial Advisory Board has slowly evolved as a result of the success of the Artereal Gallery Project Space, which was launched in early 2012. Introduced as a dedicated space for exhibiting cutting edge work by both emerging and established artists working across performance art, video, installation, sound based art and new media - the space has a particular focus on exhibiting work which is generally absent from or ignored in a commercial gallery context.

Following the addition of Matt Glenn to the Artereal team in the role of Project Space Curator, came an acknowledgement and an increased focus on the importance of including a wide variety of independent curatorial and industry voices - hence the development of the Curatorial Advisory Board.

Further to their involvement with the curatorial direction of the gallery, the board will also function as a ‘think tank’ aimed at helping the gallery to further stretch its vision and continue to develop and strengthen its voice within both the local and international contemporary art scene. With this exciting development comes the opportunity to introduce new voices, both curatorial and artistic to the gallery space.

LISA CORSI

Lisa Corsi is co-founder and Managing Director of ARTCELL, an independent agency which reflects her commitment to the development and recognition of art and its narrative. Established in 2007, Lisa has provided project support to artists and institutions, as well as curatorial and collection management support to address the changing landscape of private and corporate art collections. Lisa is also co-founder of SafARI, an exhibition of unrepresented artists in Sydney’s least visible venues, timed to coincide with the opening weeks of the Biennale of Sydney. Lisa was Curatorial and Collections Manager at Sherman Galleries, Sydney between 2000 and 2006 and has also worked with the Biennale of Sydney. She is currently President of SafARI Initiatives Inc. and board member of 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art.

Sebastian is currently involved in several independent curatorial projects including curating the 2013 John Fries Memorial Prize and as Art Bank's roving curator for 2013. He lectures in art writing at the College of Fine Arts, Sydney and sits on the advisory panel for the Supported Studios Network for Accessible Arts.

Claude Jones is currently undertaking a 3 month ceramic residency in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

During the month of March, Claude was invited to exhibit at Artunit, a gallery in Harrlem, near Amsterdam. Her show 'Anthropocentrap' features new sculptural pieces, which are her first completed works during the residency.

"Anthropocen-trap combines the words “anthropocentric” and “trap” to suggest the human-centric perspective that both defines and ultimately limits the way that animals are predominantly perceived.

In these sculptures, a cage and corset-like body, connects animal and human. For me the, "cage" – or "coop" is symbolic of both literal entrapment, but also the metaphoric restraint of an historic and enduring anthropocentrism that inhibits us from questioning the ethics of our contradictory relationship with other animals." - Claude Jones, artist statement

From 28 March - 19 April 2013, Claude will also exhibiting a solo show at NOPX, a gallery space in Turin, Italy. Her show 'Rabbit Run, Run!' will feature mixed media works on paper.

Artereal Gallery would like to congratulate Liam Benson on winning the 2013 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award.

The prestigious $20,000 award was announced tonight at the Gold Coast City Gallery and was jointly awarded to two artists - Liam Benson and Justine Varga.

Now in its 13th year, the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award is considered one of the most important annual surveys of contemporary Australian photographic practice. This highly anticipated award, with a total $30,000 in prizes and acquisitions, is a highlight of Gold Coast City Gallery’s exhibition program. From close to 300 entries, this year’s guest judge acclaimed New Zealand photographer Anne Noble selected 65 finalists before narrowing the award down to the two winners.

Commenting on Liam Benson's winning work Anne Noble described The Opal Queen as "a striking contribution to the evolving genre of performative self-portraiture which is a remarkable constant in contemporary Australian photography. I find this a deeply moving image that is at once tender and politically charged. It achieves this through exquisite resolution of light, surface and the intensity of human presence. It speaks with humour and intelligence to the complexities of personal and national identity."

From 22-28 April 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) will be showcasing 'seven days of experimental performances' in a program entitled Workout.

"Each artist has a single day to present temporary works using the body and everyday materials, drawing on the double meaning of workout as both a strenuous exercise routine and a test of performance capability. Behind-the-scenes comes front and centre as setting up and packing-down takes place in front of you." - Museum of Contemporary Art

The seven artists whom will be performing throughout the week will include: David Capra, Domenico de Clario, Brian Fuata, Sarah Goffman, Agatha Gothe-Snape with Susan Gibb, Jodie Whalen, and The Motel Sisters (performative/inter-arts collaboration between Liam Benson and Naomi Oliver).

The Motel Sisters will be performing on Tuesday 23 April, showcasing a new work My Little Kony (2013). Recreating the iconic Bed-In for Peace protest by Yoko Ono and John Lennon, the artists will "take on the role of 'slacktivists', lying in bed with their laptops, ordering takeaway food, watching reality TV clips on YouTube and 'liking' socially conscious causes on social media."

Currently showing at the Queensland University of Technology Art Museum (QUT), Foundation's Edge: artists and technology presents artists who, rather than adhering to the intended use of technological devices, push them to realise their potential as an art medium.

Running from 15 March - 26 May 2013, the group exhibition features nine uranium chandeliers by Ken + Julia Yonetani. The chandeliers are part of the Crystal Palace: The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nuclear Nations series, in which the glowing installation of unique chandeliers are in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011.

"While we live in an electronic age, we also live in the shadow of an energy crisis. It is a given that the time will come when supply will no longer meet demand, and that the fossil fuel model of energy production is—as the term suggests—a fossil. What is left is a handful of sustainable alternatives and nuclear energy." - Foundation's Edge: artists and technology Catalogue

With a total of thirty-one chandeliers expected to be created for the series, fifteen were exhibited in a solo exhibition at Artereal Gallery in October-November 2012.

A trail of pasted up QR codes have been surreptitiously integrated
into the urban streetscape along Darling Street, Rozelle NSW.

This site-specific
work challenges the idea of the traditional exhibition situated within the white
cube of the gallery. When scanned, each QR code links back to a video work on
Youtube by multi-disciplinary artist Gary Deirmendjian. Referred to by the
artist as ‘microvids’ these video works exist outside of the traditional fixed
physical space of the gallery and can be accessed at any time from any place...

This trail of QR codes is part of the Art Month Sydney Rozelle Precinct Night. On Thursday 21 March, numerous exhibitions, performances & events have been organised throughout Darling Street, Rozelle to bring greater awareness of contemporary art in Rozelle to the local and broader arts community.

Curated by Sydney based artist David Eastwood, as part of Art Month Sydney 2013, Speculative Spaces showcases the work of nine artists that work with miniature models within their practices.

"Speculative Spaces explores the curious and compelling processes of artists for whom miniature models serve as a source of inspiration. For these artists, the maquettes or dioramas they construct are speculative spaces, interpreted through the images they make in mediums such as drawing, painting, photography and video."

Exhibiting at Robin Gibson Gallery, the group show features photographs from Anna Carey's Mirage series. Anna's artistic practice involves the creation of detailed handmade miniature models of buildings and houses, in which she then photographs amongst the natural landscape.

For the uninitiated, Art Bus is a monthly bus tour run by Contempo at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Through back alleys, main streets, studios and pubs it is a three hour introduction to the artist run spaces laying the foundations of Sydney's artistic output.

In our February instalment we met with Sydney artist Gary Deirmendjian who, for several years, has been channelling his small scale video works online, sublimely capturing ephemeral moments, depositing them on YouTube and referring to them as his MICROVIDS. Accompanying Gary was curator Pedro de Almeida, who earlier this year was invited to select a series of Gary’s videos and respond to them however he saw fit. The result of this was MICROVIDS – an exhibition pamphlet which acts as an intermediary between an online archive and a physical gallery space.

On the day MICROVIDS was to pop up in Prince Alfred Park to feature on Art Bus I woke to bucketing rain and brollies and armed myself with the task of finding a sufficiently rain-proof alternative venue. Serendipitously, the search gave me my first optic of the insides of the Irish (Gaelic) Club where I was launched into a Celtic dance class jam packed with bounding prepubescents in jazz shoes, but was briskly denied afternoon access to their hall. In the end it was the trusty, iconic Shakespeare Hotel at 200 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills that housed the afternoon's introduction to MICROVIDS. I do enjoy the fact that so much trust is placed in artists, bus drivers and tour guides that no one questioned why we were heading to a Victorian pub to meet Gary and Pedro, rather than a gallery to see some art. Dressed in dark wet weather gear, propped up against the wall of the establishment while waiting for our arrival, one voice on the bus piped up upon our approach saying the pair looked particularly curatorial and with tongue firmly in cheek I am inclined to agree. As someone who had arrived at the afternoon having had contact with MICROVIDS, I was eager to see how others would react, especially as they would be coming into contact with the exhibition in a group setting.

The catalogue is divided into eight textual segments which link to an online video via an accompanying QR code. I wondered how the group viewing exercise would impact on the way the content was absorbed as, despite its tendency to provoke conversation, I do associate the catalogue and the streaming of the videos as being something intensely quiet. Scanning one code rather than another to determine the order of viewing is something I would prefer to chance upon, not to have influenced by a companion pointing me one way or the other.

Despite my scepticism of the clouding effects of group consciousness the format of the day worked a treat. We clambered up to the top level of the Shakespeare which is always an event, but even more so when you are escorting 20 wide-eyed punters to an air-tight room and asking them to ignore the humidity and listen to artistic banter for a moment or two. Packing ourselves around a table, Gary and Pedro gave enough of an introduction to provide context to the work, but not so much as to lead us to conclusions. When I first saw MICROVIDS a few months back, the coupling of Gary's videos and Pedro's poetic text immediately struck me as capturing the elating, often elusive, feeling of first contact. For me the work is an entry point into that first moment of recognition of a new idea, a new thought, a new emotion. You don't need to read Pedro's text to know it is poetry. The format, the font, the absence of capitals makes you view the composition with inspired eyes and syncopates the flow of your reading. The writing seems nostalgic for a time that hasn't passed. In communion with this sense of preserving the now, Gary's videos launch you into a series of captured moments which draw you to intimately consider what immediately preceded and what is to come. Confusions with QR codes and pesky technological questions aside, the Art Bus-ers seemed thrilled to explore the idea of an unconventional exhibition space alongside the idea of joint artistic endeavours. Our other gallery stops for the day had also addressed collaboration and the two elements of MICROVIDS standing strongly alone and coming together to create something poignant and whole seemed to strongly resonate with each person. Surreptitiously the audience was collaborating as well with each person creating their own version of the artwork via the choose-your-own-adventure nature of viewing and responding to each of the eight segments. For many of these people I think it was the first time they had been asked to participate in the act of bringing something to life. Streaming the work is, by default, fulfilling the work and the text/image interplay in MICROVIDS is particularly pertinent to questions of anticipation and expectation, both of the work and of the viewer. It is a liberating thing to have so much control over your consumption and consideration. The beauty of both Art Bus and MICROVIDS being that by their very nature they promote the artwork as a dialogue, not a static response; an ideas exchange, not a dogma.

Whatever happened in that stuffy room, when the arty mob left the pub and went on their merry way home, I think we can be assured that many were mentally recording the physical passage between their day out and their home comforts. They may not have been editing their journey for snippets worthy of mass observation, but if we all helped people evaluate their world as much as they passively observe it then three cheers for MICROVIDS on Art Bus, I say.

Last week we featured one of Liam Benson's new photographs, Santa_2013, in which the artwork is currently exhibiting at the Campbelltown Arts Centre, as part of The Social exhibition.

The Social examines the relationship between contemporary art practice, social engagement and popular culture through the mediums of performance, narrative, photomedia and video.

Also exhibiting in the show is Perth-based artist, Abdul Abdullah, in which the artist often explores the notions of cultural identity and ethnic boundaries within his works. In the series 'Home', Abdullah creates installations throughout different Australian environments, imposing on the natural surroundings with material items - such as a white flag with the text 'HOME', referencing the notions of colonisation.

Featuring three photographic works, each image represents the idea of a self-sustaining system, such as a home, whilst also bringing to the fore the element of dependance these entities experience from the influence of external factors.

From 31 January - 16 March 2013, GV Art Gallery is showcasing Art & Science.

Featuring artists & scientists such as Ken + Julia Yonetani, the exhibition intends to challenge and question contemporary society's preconceptions toward art, science, and the inextricable nature of the two disciplines within our everyday.

Art & Science is an exhibition to provoke debate and discussion.

"Developing the concept of scientific illustration, these works instigate creative dialogues between art, science and new technologies to present the viewer with a complex and frequently personal subject.

These visual dialogues bring a degree of accessibility to subject matter which often requires higher learning and understanding. However, they are not simply illustrative of scientific matters, but emotive works to challenge and provoke thought." - GV Art, Art & Science Press Release

Last year in July 2012, Abdul Abdullah, Casey Ayers and Nathan Beard, exhibited their group show 'Artefacts From The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere' in Artereal's main gallery.

This year from January 18th - February 10th 2013, the three Perth-based artists have exhibited a new show, Interregna, at Moana Project Space, a new artist-run contemporary art gallery in Perth's CBD. Featuring new works from each artist, including painting, sculpture, installation and video, this show is the first collaboration between the trio since the Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

"Interregna – a word that signifies a gap in continuity, typically designated to the interim period between shifting reigns of government.

Each artist documents the construction of personal identity as inflected by political and societal contexts. Whether exploring closeted or repressed violence, racial subtexts, or taboo sexual deviancies, each artist employs text and the corporeal form to draw masked or subconscious tensions to the surface, dealing with their chosen subjects with an almost devotional sincerity." - Moana Project Space

From February 1st - 4th 2013, over forty emerging and established artists, including Liam Benson, exhibited video, installation, sound, 2D and 3D artworks in various locations across the site.

With a population of only 1300, Kandos is an approximately 3 1/2 hour drive from Sydney.
