An Early Beginning
Andrew Wyeth began studying art at a very young age. His father, the illustrator Newell Convers Wyeth, recognized his son’s talent and fascination for art, and took interest in teaching him. While Andrew was learning the discipline and basics of traditional drawing, he discovered his passion for watercolors and began to experiment with them. His early paintings often included rocky landscapes and the sea.

Although Andrew learned the art of painting from his father, his pieces were very different from his father’s. While N.C. Wyeth used a full array of colors, and often painted lively figures, Andrew was more reserved in his art. He chose mostly to work with warm, earthy tones, and created somber figures and landscapes. Famous Andrew Wyeth Watercolors
A well-known Andrew Wyeth watercolor entitled “Christina’s World“, is considered by many to be a rare representation of mid-20th century America. Created in 1948, the realist-style painting was inspired by Christina Olson, a neighbor suffering from a muscular deterioration that left the entire lower half of her body paralyzed. From his window, Andrew witnessed her crawling across a field on the Olson farm and was motivated to capture and immortalize the image. However, Andrew used his wife as a model for the painting.

Linseed oil is the main ingredient that binds oil paint; on the contrary, water is the main ingredient that binds acrylic paint. Hence, we can say that oil paint is “oil based” and acrylic paint is “water based.”

Acrylic paint and oil paint require different lengths of time to dry. Oils take relatively more time to dry, typically several weeks, depending on the ingredients used. This is because oils do not undergo the same process of evaporation that water does when exposed to air. Rather, oil paint oxidizes into a dry solid. This property causes oil paint to dry very slowly, giving the artist time to blend colors and adjust the final product.

On the other hand, acrylic paint remains the choice of those artists who believe in quick results, since only a couple of hours are required for the paint to dry. Nevertheless, a slower drying version of acrylic paint was developed by Golden Artist Colors in 2008, which combined the qualities of acrylic paint with the longer drying duration of oil paint, allowing the paint to remain wet for a few more hours on the canvas under normal conditions.

When we use oil paint, we need a solvent such as turpentine to thin the paint and clean up the work space, which has its disadvantages because turpentine has toxic qualities. An additional step that is required is that the canvas must be thoroughly primed before being painted on, and afterward a removable protective layer of varnish should be applied to the finished product.

During the passage of time, oil paint can look yellowish and turn brittle and crack, which makes it wise to apply the principle of “fat over lean” to maintain a smooth surface – each coat of paint should have a higher oil to pigment ratio.

Acrylic is typically more versatile in nature to use for the average artist, although because of its faster drying time, the painter is not able to blend colors or use the wet-in-wet technique available to oil paint. Retarders can be added to acrylic paint to slow the drying process, allowing water to be added to make the paint more workable.

Tools

If you’re interested in becoming a face painter, then the first thing you need are the right tools. Fortunately, there are not a ton of tools you need. You need brushes, paints, sponges, water and towels. That’s about it!

As far as brushes are concerned, you’ll need a small brush and a medium sized brush. You’ll want the bristles to be synthetic instead of natural. Natural bristles tend to be scratchy and don’t work as well on skin anyway. Synthetic brushes are cheaper, too. Although, non of this should cost you too much money.

Next thing you need are paints that you can paint of faces. You can’t use regular acrylic paints. They’re toxic! You have to use paints that are rated for use on skin. You can get these at hobby shops or online. Personally, I get mine online. It’s cheaper and easier. Get a variety of colors to begin with. Actually, get a set, not individual paints. Later, you can replace the colors you use a lot with individual tubes.

Next, you need various sizes of sponges, a couple of saucers to put paints on, and a bowl for water. As far as the sponges, I take synthetic sponges and cut them into smaller shapes. Triangles work well, because they have points that can get into small spaces on small faces.

Designs

Finally, you’ll need some designs to paint. Start with easier designs. That’s what most kids want at birthday parties, anyway. You know, fire trucks and cup cakes. That sort of thing. You can graduate to bigger designs like whole face designs as you get better.

Great places to get ideas for designs are websites and videos. YouTube has a ton of face painting videos. Once you get the basic ideas down, you can look at a video and add your own touches to the design. One thing I do is to take pictures of my favorite designs to keep a record of them for getting face painting jobs and also for tickling my imagination right before I sit down and start to paint.

The specific instructions by the writer were that the Sheriff had to swing the rifle as if it were a baseball bat. And that the Zombie had to go down to the floor unconscious.

Knocking a Zombie out is a major deal so the baseball-bat-like-blow had to look very impressive.

But also this presented an opportunity to add gore to the drawing.

Zombies look disgusting, they’re losing parts, have open wounds. Adding gore to this action panel seemed like a good idea. Or was it not?

Well, this was going to be the very first gory panel in the graphic novel. Our readers were not used to this. But I did like the idea and so they could like it too.

So I went ahead with it.

But to minimize the potential “shock”, gore should be mild to moderate at the most.

The first thing to do was to decide on the most effective camera angle. The reader had to know exactly what was going on, and the drawing should not be too explicit.

I placed the camera a little above the two characters and behind the Zombie.

As per the artwork itself, it should shout “BAAAM!” without the need of sound effects and it should be gory, but not “too” gory.

When I sent the drawing to the writer and editor for their comments and approval (or rejection), they were surprised with it but liked it. On the other hand, some readers who were shown the drawing at that time didn’t like it; they thought it was too gory.

The drawing ended up being approved and it was included in the final, printed comic. It has been well received by most readers.

Conclusion: Unless you are drawing comics for a very young age or your comics must be very family oriented, adding mild to moderate gore to your drawings when the opportunity presents, it is a very valid and powerful ally to make your artwork stand out. This catches the reader’s attention, and makes the overall comic more entertaining.

In the 1950s, acrylic paints became more widely popular for several reasons. They have a much quicker drying time than oils, which makes it possible for an artist to produce a larger number of works more quickly. They are water-soluble- which means you don’t need a special thinner or cleanser to clean your brushes- and non-toxic. The colors are also easily mixed, and once dry they are water-resistant. Acrylic paint materials are also very widely available.

The first step in beginning to learn how to paint with acrylics is to buy a paint set. Acrylic paints usually come in sets of 12, 24, and 48 colors. Base your decision on how much mixing of color you expect to do. Besides the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow, you will also need white, black, brown, green, orange, and purple. These basic colors will help you mix whatever shade you desire.

Next, you must decide what to use as the base of your painting: canvas, wood, metal, stone, clay, cardboard, or paper. Canvas, of course, is the most commonly used, followed by wood panels. The oil painting is a technique that aims to create an image on a surface by applying it to color with oil. The oil painting appeared in Europe in the late Middle Ages, where she was quickly adopted for the more easy to use, it allowed a greater variety of effects than existing techniques based wax, such as paint in encaustic, or water-based, such as tempera. The oil paint applied usually with bristle brush or badger hair or sable, more flexible. You can also use a flexible spatula, wide blade, called “knife”, or paint with your fingers.
