April Fools' Day is celebrated in the Western world on the 1st of April of every year. Sometimes referred to as All Fools' Day, April 1 is not a legal holiday, but is widely recognized and celebrated as a day which tolerates practical jokes and general foolishness. Traditionally, in some countries such as New Zealand, the UK, Australia, and South Africa, the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool".[1]The earliest recorded association between 1st April and foolishness can be found in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392). In 1509, a French poet referred to a poison d’avril (April fool, literally "April fish"), a possible reference to the holiday.[4][4] On 1st April, 1698, several people were tricked into going to the Tower of London to "see the Lions washed".[4][7] In some areas of France, New Year's was a week-long holiday ending on the 1st of April.[6]

The same story was also reported in the British newspaper, The Daily Mail which credited the new design to April Fewell. In 2010, The One Show did a part on "Cloned Unicorns" and then revealed that it was an April Fool's Day joke.[citation needed]

In The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom on April Fool's Day 1977, a fictional mid-ocean state of San Serriffe was created in a seven-page supplement.[citation needed]

By game shows

As part of an April Fools' joke on April 1, 1997, Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak switched hosting duties. Sajak hosted Jeopardy! that day (which featured several Wheel-inspired categories) and Trebek hosted Wheel of Fortune where Sajak and Vanna White played as contestants. On April 1, 2008, Alex Trebek appeared on Jeopardy! On April 1, 2010, Sajak appeared during Trebek's introduction during the opening of Jeopardy!. On April 2, the site posted a photo gallery showing all 10 mistakes, as well as the end of that day's episode in which Pat & Vanna went over each change. In most cases, once the contestant learned that it was an April Fools' joke, the real Showcase would consist of extravagant prizes, such as luxury and sports cars. Water on Mars: In 2005 a news story was posted on the official NASA website purporting to have pictures of water on Mars. RISKS Digest often publishes a special April 1 issue.[57]

The hoax played off the fact that when rival role-playing game developers Square and Enix merged on April 1, 2003, many believed the news to be an April Fools' joke.[59]

IGN, a video game website, released a realistic-looking Legend of Zelda movie trailer on April Fool's Day 2007. Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki has pulled numerous April Fools pranks. NHS's Information Governance (IG) Toolkit ask that you give a series of documentation as evidence that you and your organization has followed with Information Governance Standards, as set out in Connecting the Health on the IG Toolkit online. This documentation can be generally divided into the following categories:

- Action Planning
- Registration and Log
- Training Materials
- Job Description
- Terms of Reference to be different or the Board Meeting
- Flow Charts
- Composition of Government Communication Information
- Policies

While perhaps the least fiddly documents to work together, determine policies that need to be generated so you can show the suitability of IG can be a little scary. After all, it is the policy and procedure manual that will be implemented and adhered to by all staff within your organization - so they must be right! They also documents that the Information Governance compliance assessors are most likely to check with a fine toothed comb when they complete their investigation at the location of your organization.

So, whether the policy documents that you must ensure that you meet with the appropriate standard?

You must ensure that as a minimum that you have:

- Information Policy
- Confidentiality Code
- Information Sharing Policy
- Lifecycle Policy
- Risk Assessment and Management Policy
- Information Security Policy
- Data Protection Policy

In addition, you must ensure that you can proof the fact that all employees have read and understood these policies and procedures contained in the record to determine policy. There are several ways to do this, but perhaps the easiest is to:

- Hold a training meeting on comprehensive principles IG
- Use the meeting to go through the key points contained in each policy document listed above
- Provide some time to read all the meetings for each participant to read and digest the above-mentioned policy
- Provide opportunities for questions that will arise in the discussion of policies and for every field of obscurity can be explained
- Ask all participants to sign a form stating that their signatories have read and understand any policies of IG
- Keep a copy of this form signatories secure, so it can produce as evidence if requested by the Government Information assessors.

Karen Glynn, Duke University Libraries Visual Materials Archivist, will give an historical overview of the South African Documentary Photography collections in the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library. Paul Weinberg, photographer and Senior Curator of Visual Archives in the Manuscripts and Archives Library at the University of Cape Town, will pick up the thread and describe the process of building a documentary photography archive in South Africa today.

Paul Weinberg was born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1956. He was a founding member of Afrapix, the collective photo agency that documented resistance to apartheid in the 1980s. Weinberg's images have been widely exhibited and published. In 1993, he won a Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography Award for his portrayal of the fisher folk of Kosi Bay on South Africa's northern Natal coast. Weinberg has taught photography at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. An Instrument of a Thousand Voices: An Organ Curator at Work in Duke Chapel

Duke Chapel houses four distinct pipe organs, ranging in size from 200 pipes to almost 7,000, with pipes as small as straws and as large as tree trunks. The care of these pipes, the windchests they sit on, and everything down to the organ keys is the responsibility of the Curator of Organs and Harpsichords, John Santoianni. Come learn about the inner workings of these instruments and how they are maintained, helping to fill Duke Chapel with 500 years of organ literature.

John Santoianni is the Ethel Sieck Carrabina Curator of Organs and Harpsichords at Duke University, a position he has held since 2002. He oversees numerous instruments built in a variety of styles in the Chapel as well as in the Biddle Music Building. Mr. Santoianni holds degrees in organ performance from the Oberlin Conservatory as well as the New England Conservatory, where he graduated with Distinction in Performance. As an organ builder, he worked with the Bishop Organ Company in Massachusetts and the Lauck Pipe Organ Company in Michigan before starting his own organ company which maintains and rebuilds instruments. He and his family live in Durham.

The High Alchemy or Low Level Alchemy spells may be cast on most items to convert them into coins. The number of coins obtained per item is specific for each item. All tradeable items may be "alched", and items may be "alched" one by one while in banknote form. Even if an item is untradeable, it sometimes may still be converted into coins via the High Alchemy or Low Level Alchemy spell. An exhibit of Soviet-era propoganda posters from the collections of Duke University Libraries and the Nasher Museum of Art will be on display in the Nasher Museum's Education Corridor March 15 - May 15, 2011.

The exhibit (Machine, Mother, Mannequin: The Good Woman in Soviet Propaganda) illustrates government-prescribed images of Soviet women from the 1917 Revolution to the 1960s. It was curated by Angela Linhardt (M.A. candidate, Slavic and Eurasian Studies) and Professor Beth Holmgren (Slavic and Eurasian Studies). Funds for restoring the posters were provided by the Trent Memorial Foundation.

An OPENING RECEPTION for the exhibit will be held Thursday, March 17, at the Nasher Cafe from 7 to 8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

Precious metal clay can be a fantastic medium to produce your handmade jewellery; it can be easily moulded, requires fewer tools and produces quicker results than traditional silver smithing methods, while allowing the artist much creative freedom to make some truly stunning jewellery from mainstream to gothic themes. It can have glass, stones and even sterling silver elements fired in place. However it is important to understand both the benefits and the limitations of this medium to avoid expensive and frustrating mistakes. The following article lists 8 pitfalls to avoid when working with PMC.

Don't mix different types of PMC together in the same slip pot, they all fire in different ways and have differing densities of silver particles
Don't allow PMC to have prolonged contact with the air, plan your pieces and aim to work quickly in the clay stage. Don't wrap PMC in silver foil to store it as it causes a nasty reaction and ruins the clay
Don't use reconstituted PMC for ring making or if you want to achieve a polished surface on your piece
Don't fire your ring directly on the kiln shelf as it can create an uneven finish and distort it. Used vermiculite instead to ensure even shrinkage.
Don't attempt to torch fire a glass cabachon in place; this process requires a kiln and a graded firing process. Used PMC3 in this case as it has the lowest sintering temperatures.
If you are using glass in your piece consider the design carefully, once the glass is in place you will not be able to carry out any soldering work as the heat will break the glass.
If you want to set stones into your jewellery, consider if they are suitable for firing. It is possible to get some manmade stones specifically for this process, and some natural stones may be suitable but always check, and if in doubt create a bezel and set the stone after firing.
If you would like to fire sterling silver in PMC, you should consider firing temperatures carefully. Don't fire the piece at a temperature greater that 650F for longer than 30 minutes otherwise your sterling silver may become brittle.

Making sure you watch out for the above pitfalls, can mean your experience with metal clay is a positive one. It can be a fantastic medium to work with whether you enjoy silversmithing and use it to add detail to your projects or you work with metal clay exclusively. If you are beginner it is best to start with simple projects and work your way up. Don't forget to practice your design with some polymer clay to help you to achieve the look you are after in the shortest possible time when you come to use the clay (which is drying out all the time). It might also be a good idea to look out for a course in your local area where you can learn the basics and build up your confidence with experts on hand for advice. Jewellery making magazines can be a good source to find a course appropriate for you, and they often contain hints and tips for those interested in metal clay jewellery. I have completed a number of metal clay courses and found that it has increased my confidence much more than just reading books on this subject, although the latter can be helpful if you are looking for new ideas, techniques or inspiration.

Advertising - 5 Tips The Competition Doesn't Know

As with most things in life, to get ahead of your competition you only need to do a couple of things different to them to make a big difference. It's no different with Facebook advertising and here are a few small tweaks you can make to your next campaign that can make a real difference to your end result.
Tip #1
This first tip is so obvious you'll wonder why I've included it, but it is amazing how many people don't do this when using Facebook advertising. Always have a call to action on your Facebook ads. That's means words to tell your user to take an action. For example, Click here, Call us today, Like us. These are all simple calls to action, and without these you will find your ads tend to have a lower click through rate.
Tip #2
When you create your ad, set it up to use cost per click, not cost per impression. Cost per click means you only get charged when someone physically clicks on your Facebook ad. Cost per impression means you get charged per 1000 impressions and the rate for this is much lower than cost per click. However if you're new to Facebook advertising and your ads don't have a high click through rate but do get lots of impressions, you'll quickly find that changing to cost per click will save you a lot of money.
Tip #3
Facebook have a recommended bidding range when you create an ad. This means the price is for example between 0.30 - 0.70 per click. Try setting your bid to somewhere in the middle of this range when you create your ad. Then work out what your click through rate is. Your click through rate is the percentage of people who click on your ad, compared to the number of impressions. If you can improve your click through rate by changing parts of your ad and split testing, then Facebook will reward you by giving your ad more impressions.
Tip #4
Once you've managed to increase your click through rate by split testing your ads, try lowering your bid price. A good click through rate is roughly between 13% - 20%. The reason you should do this is because Facebook advertising reward a good click through rate with more impressions. So you can get the same number of impressions and clicks by lowering your bid price!
Tip #5
When you select your bid price don't select obvious amounts like 0.25, 0.30, 0.35 etc. Try 0.26 or 0.31 as not as many people will bid on these prices.
These tips are all very small tweaks you can make to your Facebook advertising campaigns. They can really increase the effectiveness of your ads and keep you ahead of your competition. However be sure that you only include them as part of your overall split testing strategy.
