I was a fox in a forest hunting for food. At one point I turned into a Teddy Fox because I thought it would make me less intimidating to my prey… Anyway, I used that image for fodder in this new piece I worked up yesterday. I made it into a little mock album cover full of songs that I typically listen to while painting… and threw a JH track in there for those of you who requested it in the last mix.

For some reason, even to this day, I find it more gratifying to deliver music and art as a package to people rather than just one or the other. It brings me back to my mixed tape crafting years… (yes I’m THAT old).

Track List:

Angel Eyes (Layo & Bushwacka Mix) ~ Ella Fitzgerald
Push the Envelope ~ The Asteroids Galaxy Tour
Damaged People ~ Depeche Mode
How Does It Make You Feel ~ Air
B Line ~ Lamb
Binbo Furi ~ Microbunny
Leave Me Alone Natalie Imbruglia
Islands (Delorean Remix) The XX
Somnam ~ Ulver
Die 4 Love ~ Johnny Hollow
Freestate (Clark Remix) Depeche Mode
Human (Live Version) Goldfrapp

In February, I was fortunate enough to have 2 lovely ladies introduce themselves to me during the last Shadowood Collective art show. Gabrielle and Adriana approached me with what seemed to be an armful of my miniature prints, and asked if I’d be interested in hanging my work in their boutique. I was honestly a little apprehensive, since I had never thought of hanging work inside the walls of a clothing store… but when I went to visit their lovely space months later, I was immediately ‘sold’ on the idea.

The space had a wonderful warm and authentic vibe… the ceilings were covered with turn of the century tin tile, the clothes were very stylish and uniquely crafted by a variety of talented Canadian fashion designers, and the music that was spinning ranged from what seemed to be carefully selected tracks from Depeche Mode, Siouxie and the Banshees and The Sisters of Mercy… “Yep!”, I thought to myself… my work would definitely be comfortable here. And, the icing on the cake… they had a pet fish named “Peter Murphy”… I asked him to protect the work during off hours, to which he responded with a confident underwater head nod.

The work will be up until the end of July at “The Trapdoor Boutique” in the junction end of Toronto. You will find my entire collection of framed miniatures available for purchase… and, I’ve just printed a very special edition of “Pins and Needles”, based on the album artwork I painted for The Birthday Massacre. The “Peter Murphy” Edition is also available (the man, not the fish)… both of which are printed in a very limited run of 13. The number one of each edition is framed and available for purchase at Trapdoor in their refurbished antique frames hand painted by yours truly.

{For those of you whom are interested in more details of “Pins and Needles” or “Peter Murphy” you can contact me personally for information on this very limited run of giclee prints.}

Oh, and here’s a picture of “Peter Murphy”… (the fish)… the inspiration for the poster graphic…

If crazy were a flavor, it would be my favorite type of ice cream. Meet Julian Mayer, a performance artist who recently released this youtube video message to her unborn baby grand child. It’s a humorous, yet rather terrifying message, to her assumed future progeny. I have to say, this is the kind of creative freedom that makes me beam from ear to ear when surfing the intertubes. I can’t help but ponder the look on the face of her baby grand larvae when he/she witnesses this bit of family footage…

This question immediately puts me back into the late 80′s where I’d spend a lot of time creating ‘mixed tapes’ for my friends… I would doodle strange images and carefully fold them into their clear plastic coffin cases, painstakingly etching the mixes (by pressing “play & record”) onto thin magnetic tape…. revering the bands who created such strange sounds. It was a ritual. It was almost religious… I miss this type of sonic crafting…

But that was then, and this is now. I just recently found 8tracks.com that allows you to create your own mixes… and so, here’s a modern mixed ‘tape’ for any hungry ears that may be floating in the digital ether…

01 Sherbert Head ~ Boards of Canada
02 I’m Still Awake ~ Hybrid
03 Christian Christiansands ~ Tricky
04 Don’t Be Light ~ Air
05 Islands (Nosag Thing Remix) ~ The XX
06 Pedestal ~ Portishead
07 Karma Coma ~ Tricky
08 Butterfly Caught ~ Massive Attack
09 Blue Stars ~ Microbunny
10 Who Can You Trust ~ Morcheeba
