When it comes to a visual display of color, line, form, and overall composition, Abstract Art has a language all its own. The imagery included in Abstract Art paintings are often far fetched versions of reality. Sometimes they are paintings of things that only the artist is able to interpret. There are artists who are able to get their point across to the public, by painting in such a way that is appealing to just about anyone who views their work.
Various versions of abstract are included in the collection of paintings that fall under the title of Abstract Art. Partial abstraction is present in realistic art. These types of paintings are able to be understood by most people. There are shapes and designs that are recognizable to the general public. As for total abstraction, most of these paintings include images that don't bear a resemblance to anything anyone has ever come across before.

Historically, there were three art movements that actually contributed to the coming about of abstract paintings; Romanticism, Impressionism, and Expressionism. Each of these took place in the nineteenth century. However, Cubism and Fauvism paved the way for abstract paintings to become more popular with the public.

Painting Abstract Art doesn't have a lot to do with imagination or finesse with a paint brush. Just about anything can be applied to a canvas and called Abstract Art.

There are many artists that make a living from creations that are made highly attractive to the public by their distinct color combination and shapes included in the painting. Abstract Art doesn't have to make sense; it just has to appeal to the viewer in some way. While the overall design can attract many onlookers, some people find that the painting evokes certain feelings within the person viewing the work of art.

Creating a painting in the style of Abstract Art is best done on canvas and with acrylic paint. The acrylic paint is thicker and won't run into other colors when added to the canvas. Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality.
The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy.
The sources from which individual artists drew their theoretical arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time.

Abstract art, nonfigurative art, nonobjective art, and nonrepresentational art are loosely related terms. They are similar, although perhaps not of identical meaning.

Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be only slight, or it can be partial, or it can be complete. Abstraction exists along a continuum. Even art that aims for verisimilitude of the highest degree can be said to be abstract, at least theoretically, since perfect representation is likely to be exceedingly elusive.

Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. In geometric abstraction, for instance, one is unlikely to find references to naturalistic entities.

Figurative art and total abstraction are almost mutually exclusive. But figurative and representational (or realistic) art often contains partial abstraction.
Both Geometric abstraction and Lyrical Abstraction are often totally abstract.

Among the very numerous art movements that embody partial abstraction would be for instance fauvism in which color is conspicuously and deliberately altered vis-a-vis reality, and cubism, which blatantly alters the forms of the real life entities depicted.

Street painting, also commonly known as pavement art, chalk art, sidewalk art, is the performance art of rendering artistic designs on pavement such as streets, sidewalks, and town squares with impermanent and semi-permanent materials.

Origin
Street painting has been recorded throughout Europe since the 16th century. Street Painters, a name these performance artists are most commonly called in the USA are historically called I Madonnari in Italy (singular form: madonnaro) because they recreated images of the Madonna. In England they are called Screevers and in Germany Strassenmaler.

The Italian I Madonnari were itinerant artists. Aware of festival and holy days in each province and town, they traveled to join in the festivities to make a living from observers who would throw coins if they approved of the artists work. For centuries I Madonnari were folk artists, reproducing simple images with crude materials such as tiles, coal and chalk until World War II disrupted their tradition and reduced their numbers.

In 1972, a street painting was being promoted again by the formation of a festival in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy and today the performance art-form is recognized all over the world.

In 1982, Kurt Wenner, who is recognized as the innovator of 3-D street painting and others followed developing new styles based on the work of artists such as Andrea Mantegna, M. C. Escher, Michelangelo, Hans Holbein and others. Today this work is called 3d Street Painting, 3D Pavement Art, 3D Chalk Art, 3D Sidewalk Art, 3D Illusion, anamorphic or 3D, although in the past it was called one-point perspective.

In 2010, Edgar Mueller, created a 100' x 40' 3-D street painting that for the first time in history was designed to metamorphose, the image changing from day to night from a giant into a fetus, through the use of photoluminescent paints.

Painters
The first known street painter in the US was Sidewalk Sam, who began painting in the streets of Boston in 1973.

In 1982 Kurt Wenner, an American, began street painting in Rome. By 1983 he took the already-existing anamorphic art form to the street by drawing, then brushing, his home-made pastels into a painting. In 1984 he was documented by National Geographic in their film Masterpieces In Chalk. That same year he won the title of "Maestro Madonnaro" at the Grazie festival.

Later in the early 1990s Michael Kirby began to work in Europe as a streetpainter creating more original work based on contemporary issues and not on classical ideas and designs. He would go on to become a master streetpainter in all the major festivals across Europe including Germany, Italy, and Holland. He would later bring the art form to other countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Ireland, Canada, and various parts of the United States. His work was featured at the Smithsonian Institution in DC, National Geographic, David Letterman Show, North Carolina Museum of Art, Rai Television, and others. Today his studio, Murals of Baltimore, is hired to create public art around the world and is considered the leader in street painting.

In 2008 Street Painter Mark Wagner set a Guinness World Record for the largest chalk drawing. The piece covered 90,000 sq. ft. (8,361 sq. meters) and was created by 6,000 people (over 4,000 elementary school children). A satellite photograph was taken from 423 miles high.

Festivals
In 1972 the first International Street Painting Competition was held in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy. The goal of the competition was to record and publicize the work of (those thought to be) the last practitioners of this traditional art form.

In 1987, Wenner and Manfred Stader introduced street painting to Old Mission Santa Barbara, California. This was the first of numerous events in the United States to be modeled on the Italian festival.

In 2010, the First International Street Painting Festival in the United States was organized by Denise Kowal, President of the Avenida de Colores, Inc. 501(c) nonprofit corporation that produced the Sarasota Chalk Festival. Over 250 street painters attended the Halloween-themed festival attracting some of the best street painters from around the world such as Maestro Madonnaro and Guinness World Record holder Edgar Mueller from Germany who created the first day/night 3D street painting using photoluminescence paints 100' x 40'; Guinness World Record holder Leon Keer from the Netherlands; Maestra Madonnaro Vera Bugatti from Italy; Genna Panzarella who was the first woman to receive the title Maestra Madonnaro in Grazie di Curtatone and Guinness World Record holder Tracy Lee Stum from California created a 65' x 30' 3D Mousetrap interactive game that had two separate perspective planes, called two-point perspective.

Jackson Pollock's No 5 was a painting that was sold four years ago for a huge fee. Abstract works by Pollock are highly rated by lovers of expressionism so when this yellow and brown drizzle-like painting was valued so highly non-one was surprised.

Sold at around the same time, and for roughly the same price as No5 by Pollock, was the painting entitled Woman III by the artist de Kooning. De Kooking was another abstract expressionist painter and in the fifties painted a series of six works about a woman.

Paintings by Klimt are well known to anyone with even a passing interest in art so when his work Adele Bloch Bauer I was sold in 2006, the price of $135 dollars was not surprising. The Austrian artist's style is described as symbolist and he frequently painted the female form. This painting took him three years to complete and was created using gold and oil on canvas.

Picasso experimented with several styles of painting during his life and also produced several works worth millions. His painting The Boy with a Pipe sold in 2004 for 104 million dollars The painting depicts Herod's infanticide from the Gospel of Matthew and was created in the early sixteen hundreds. For two hundred years the painting was mistakenly attributed to one of Ruben's helpers until it was identified in 2001, and later sold to a Canadian media baron. It is currently being renovated and has been shown in national galleries in the UK and Canada.

Van Gogh's "Portrait de L'Artiste sans Barbe" was was a self-portrait fetching over 70 million pounds in the late nineties. The artist had shaved off his beard and this is one of several self portraits Van Gogh created. His other highly valued works include Road with Cypress and Star and The Round of Prisoners and of course his very famous chair and sunflower paintings. In the three years before his death Van Gogh painted numerous portraits of himself, this being the only one where he does not have a beard.

Vincent van Gogh created several portraits of people other than himself and the Portrait du Dr. Gachet became one of the most famous when it sold in 1990 for $82.5 million. Gachet was a French physician who treated Vincent van Gogh during the last few weeks of his life.

Cezanne, a French post-impressionist created Rideau, Cruchon et Compotier (or Drapery, Pitcher, and Fruit Bowl) in 1894. This painting, done in the latter years of his life is regarded among his list of greatest achievements yet commanded a price of 60 million dollars in 1999. Its known to be the most expensive still life painting ever sold, but later was resold for less. His portraits and self-portraits are also highly rated.
