New Camera, New Portfolio Tease, and July in a Nutshell

Lots of talk about newness in this post. New camera, new website, new portfolios. Yes, new things are coming and new things are here.

This is turning out to be the summer that never was. I blinked my eyes and now it is July 12. My recreational activities (drinking at bars doesn’t count) have been minimal. I did, however, get a round of golf in last weekend which was nice.

My posts have been pretty scarce lately for several reasons. The main reason is this website is getting a major overhaul in design, usability, and functionality. I do a little work here and there when I can, but the major hold up is design. I suck at design because I am too indecisive about every little thing. This is precisely why I am a photographer and was a ceramicist. Those mediums are far easier to complete finished pieces than painting and drawing, where I have a tendency to overwork the canvas.

A major happening is my new canon 40d digital slr camera. I’ve been out shooting as much as possible and working on new techniques that I will discuss later. The camera has some amazing functionality that will definitely up my game.

I also have a few new portfolios that will start to launch with the re-design. One portfolio will be of Black and White Nashville imagery. I haven’t make neutral and un-toned black and white prints in over 6 years. Here is a taste:

So in a nuthshell: Everything is great with my job, photography, dog, house…Time is flying by and I’m working on filling in a few missing pieces of my puzzle. All good things in all good time. Look for the new site and portfolios soon. Until then…

It may be Summer time but we can all dream of Christmas, snow, Carrie Fisher, and Star Wars. In 1978 someone decided that it would be a great idea to create a Star Wars Holiday Special with some of the original cast and crew of the early films including some notable cameo appearances such as Jefferson Starship.

According to Wikipedia’s entry, The Star Wars Holiday Special:

The Star Wars Holiday Special was a two-hour television special (including commercials) set in the Star Wars galaxy. It was the first official Star Wars spinoff produced. It was broadcast in its entirety in the United States only once on Friday, November 17, 1978 on CBS-TV from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time (EST). The show has never been broadcast in the United Kingdom. In it, Chewbacca and Han Solo visit Kashyyyk, Chewbacca’s home world, to celebrate Life Day. Along the way, they are pursued by agents of the Galactic Empire who are searching for rebels on the planet. The special introduces three members of Chewbacca’s family: his father Attichitcuk, his wife Mallatobuck, and his son Lumpawarrump.

The main storyline of the film, which is set in 2 ABY, transpires on Kashyyyk. During the film, scenes also take place in outer space and in spacecraft including the Millennium Falcon and an Imperial Star Destroyer. The variety-show segments and cartoon introduce a few other locales, such as a cantina on the desert planet of Tatooine and a gooey, reddish water planet known as Panna.

The drawings of Laurie Lipton are simply amazing. She is no doubt a master of her craft at a time when very few artists pursue the drawing medium. In fact, she was the first to graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a Fine Arts Degree in drawing.

When I walked in to TAG Art Gallery, here in Nashville, I nearly fudged my huggies. Everything from materials like wood and glass to people and architecture is rendered perfectly. The drawings are realistic in a fantastical way and they fold you in layer after layer through several dimensions.

Laurie is not only a master technician but a story teller as well. I'm a sucker for a good story and It's great to see a visual artist use narrative in such an effective and emotive way.

I've seen the last 30 TAG shows and all have blown me away. Jerry Dale McFadden is one of the best contemporary art curators and this show was easily my favorite so far.

I feel like I have began a post like this before. For those of you that don't know me, I grew up, with an amazing group of friends, following the Grateful Dead. The time I spent, the places I traveled, the folks I met, and the music I heard, had a significant impact on who I am today.

For those of you who do know me well, should know what song to request the band to play on my birthday. That song is Ripple. Ripple was written by Robert Hunter, the singer and main Grateful Dead songwriter.

There is something so comforting about the song that almost drives me to tears of joy every time I hear it. It's not necessarily happy, but more of an introspective song. It is simply something that is part of me.

Ripple Lyrics

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,

Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

La dee da da da, La da da da da, Da da da, Da da, Da da da da da
La da da da, La da da, Da da, La da da da, La da, Da da.
