Making Platelets with Play Doh for cancer patient withdangerously low platelets

A Facebook friend in California was telling me how she was able to turn her health around using Play Doh. Being an artist, with breast cancer of course I was interested. I found out on Tues. May 7th, and posted that my platelets had dropped down to 20,000. Now, if you don't know what platelets are that may sound like a lot of platelets. However, the "normal" range in a healthy person is between 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per a liter of blood. Mine have been below 100,000 for at least 5 weeks now. She said she made platelets in Play Doh and while she made them she said I am making more platelets. She said her body also started making more platelets. I have been keeping them out where I can see them and every day I make more.

When she first told me, I didn't have any play doh so I just drew specs on paper to get my platelets started.
I told people about it on Facebook and some of my Facebook friends also drew their own versions of platelets. Here is the picture that got my platelets going...

I went back to the doctors on May 9th after doing just the paper platelets and they had gone up to 23,000 in 2 days. When I saw the results using the drawing I decided to buy the Play Doh and have been making them in Play Doh ever since. I can tell they have gone up some, by my nose; which was a runny nose when it was really low tinged with blood. Now, my nose feels much better. I know I am not totally where I need to be yet, but I feel better knowing I can make my body make more platelets by giving it the visualization. I will find out Friday May 17th, how well we did! Will keep you posted.

Guess what, I am going to buy more play doh so I can make more platelets.

My paintings over the past few years have been mostly painted live in front of an audience and have been mixed media acrylic and pastel on quality pre-stretched canvas, ready to hang without framing. The size I used most often in my painting live series was 16 x20 inches. 2013 is a new year and I find my work is crisper looking, cleaner, lighter and more colorful like my work from the mid to late 90’s. All the 2013 works (here) have been created in my home studio and on my back porch. In the beginning of January, I started out painting 20x16 pre-stretched canvas using acrylic and textured mediums.

By the end of the month I found myself drawn back to my childhood passion of watercolor. NEW ART 2013....

My painting style is somewhere between impressionism and abstract with conceptual imagery using symbolism, patterns, and range from minimalism to multiple layers. The themes you see most often in my work are faces, hearts, symbols, funky style flowers, spirals, stars, circles, water, coffee, wine, guitars and bold colors. I typically use Golden acrylics and mediums, Grumbacher Oils, Montana Gold artists spray paints and various brands of watercolor and prismacolor pastels for my paintings. I also love drawing and doodling with sharpies. My secondary process for mixed media and collage will include a variety of inks, charcoal, pastels, coffee, dyes, tempera paints, water colors, crayons, oil pastels, various papers, fabrics, feathers, photography, clay and found papers and objects.

I also do altered books, faux finishes, found art sculptures, photography and have worked on steel surfaces, counter tops, furniture, wood, clay, fabric, paper and even ice. When I worked at the ice skating rink we actually painted the design in the ice between the layers! YES, I have even driven a Zamboni and made ice. LOL!! How to Show your Art in Local Galleries

The gallery is a business, just like any retailer, it uses vendors to supply the merchandise it sells to make a profit. Galleries will take a sales commission from the retail sales price when the art sells. Rarely, does the gallery buy the art direct.

Sales commission rates are negotiable especially the higher percentage rates. The quoted split is usually 50/50 but tends to be lower in small galleries, artist's co-ops, and galleries that house other businesses on the premises.

Not all art will sell in all galleries. Many times a gallery will have a certain type of art based on their existing clientele. Not all galleries are created equal. Most "mall galleries" are set up to rent wall space on a monthly basis. I have known many artists that have been very disappointed about the lack of sales. The "mall gallery" is in the space rental business, not art sales business.

Visit as many galleries as you can. Observe the art, the framing, the customer flow and the sales staff. Act like a regular customer look at the art prices, the artists names, and the clientele that shops there. If the staff speaks do not talk about your art. Do not announce you are an artist and would love to show at this gallery, unless you have been invited and have an appointment. That is the art gallery directors pet peeve!

When you think you have found the gallery for your work check out their website. If they offer a newsletter or guest book, do sign up so you can be contacted when the gallery is having shows and start attending them. If you know artists that show there you may want to ask them how they like the gallery.

Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure they have had no complaints on the gallery or the owner/director. Google the gallery and to see what type of web presence they have. You should find articles about events the gallery has held, take your time to look at those. You want to know that they do sell art and promote artists on a regular basis.

If you feel this is the gallery for you, start attending their events so you can develop a relationship with the artists, the gallery directors, owners, managers and staff. Never talk about your art at someone else's art opening, that is very rude. Even if asked; just discreetly hand out your business card and say give me a call. Don't you just love their art work! Keep the focus on the featured artist and the gallery!

Some will tell you they do not accept unsolicited art inquiries. In that case, the only way to get in would be through a referral from someone the gallery already does business with; either one of their clients or one of their artists.

After you have been to several events the director and staff should know you by name. Then you can call or email and ask about meeting to look over your portfolio. It takes patience. Some times before getting to that point; they will ask you to bring in samples of your art.

SC gets picked on a lot in the media. It seems there is always some amusing incident happening here.

BUT

I maintain that SC is a fun place to live. Columbia, the capital of SC was strategically planned to be in the middle of the state. A brilliant idea for those of us that like to go places! It has proven to be a great location to get to the coast and visit wonderful places like Edisto State Park, Hilton Head, the lovely city of Charleston or family friendly Myrtle Beach. Or you can go west and visit the foothills and the wonderful cities of Rock Hill, Spartanburg, Greenville and Anderson. All of these places have a lot to offer for art lovers!

I don't want to forget the middle of the state such as Columbia, Newberry, Sumter, Camden, Lancaster, Aiken, Greenwood, Lake City and Darlington and Florence,

Wrapping up the Year

It is amazing that another year has come and gone... 2012 literally flew by for me.
I was BUSY with all capital letters!

STUDIO NEWS The beginning of the year I opened an art studio for 6 months
in downtown Lexington SC. It was a very educational experience and I enjoyed
it immensely. I coordinated an Art Opening and provided several musical guests
that performed and then I painted live for the guests at the event to live music by
Bob Kilgore.

The studio coordinated an Art Opening during the Wine Walk in May.
We probably had over 1000 people come through the studio in a 3 hour time period.
The Wine Walk is set up with other Lexington businesses and all the businesses provide
wine to the guests.

Mid year. I moved my art equipment from the studio to my house near downtown
Columbia, SC. It was nice to have a special space to create. While I was there I was
able to get an additional studio easel and a studio desk that adjust with a slant.
(Lots of fun to draw on a slanted desk.)

This year, there have been several people that have sent their found objects and
recyclables to me and I want to give everyone of these people a special thank you.
Here is a picture of the first item I did with recycled thread... "Threads".

GALLERY NEWS

Railroad Gallery Evans St. Florence, SC closed their doors in November. The building the gallery was in had no a/c or heat. Art Trail Gallery closed their original Florence, SC location and reopened in November at their newly revamped location on Evans St. Just a block down, on the same side of the street, from the Railroad Junction Gallery location. I have been at both throughout 2012, still showing at Art Trail Gallery.

Bob Doster's Gallery and Studio Lancaster SC participated in their Christmas Show.

Forest Acres Fine Art Center at Theatre Rowe Richland Mall Columbia SC I showed a few pieces early in the year and painted live to the Dick Goodwin band during two different talent evening events. In SAugust I was invited to be the solo visual artist in both windows. I have 25 works of art there and they will be there until Jan. 4, 2013. They held a big Christmas Grand Opening Art Event at the gallery and I have several pieces there

Due to every gig being in a different location, varying mileage, various amounts of time, I must quote each gig on a one by one basis. Ahhh... it's the month of June and it's one of my favorite month's of the year. My childhood memories of school letting out in June, usually on or near the first day of summer, followed by vacations and my birthday... always make me nostalgic for being a kid. Silly, perhaps but as middle age dots my face with odd colors and strange new wrinkles... a woman just can't help but long for those carefree (and wrinkle free) childhood days. Painting often takes me to the joys of childhood and I am carefree.... I dance like no one is watching!

In the past month, I have painted to a lot of great musicians and been in several art shows. At the Art Bar, I did the art show Memorial weekend and then painted live to C. Neil Scott and Matt Falter, that was magic! I also had the opportunity to paint with them the first week in June at Conundrum Music Hall and to Lucas Sam improv rock act. It was all so much fun!

This painting seems nostalgic to me as well. One of the first real pieces of art I actually purchased for myself was a Monet. I enjoyed his style and then sought lessons in painting impressionism in oil paints. For me this painting inspired by very free form music is one of the best impressionistic landscape pieces I have ever done... without looking at a scene or a photo. The spirit of the music guided me to the freedom found in an impressionistic landscape created entirely from my memory with no pictorial references.

Matt Falter and C Neil Scott have posted numerous videos on youtube with me creating this painting and additional videos where I painted to their music again at Conundrum.

Painted Live to DUBA at Buckaroo's

This Saturday evening, May 26, 2012 I found myself out at Lake Murray at a little night club on the water. Owners Jamie and Kristian allowed me to paint there last year and the one I created to the DUBA band ended up going home with them that night. I hadn't seen "Dear Heart" in close to a year as there were no cameras there that night. Mary Womble the bass player and singer in the Duba band asked them to bring it to Buckaroo's that evening,which they did. We hung "Dear Heart" behind the band while I painted and they played.

This was now the third time I painted at Buckaroo's and like the other two times, I noticed they have two different crowds, which I have named the early crowd and the late night crowd. When we arrived at 8PM there were only a handful of people on the back deck overlooking the Lake. There were a few boats docked and more people inside enjoying food in the restaurant. The first crowd departs about 10 and the second crowd arrives close to 1030PM. A lot of the folks with the first crowd had been at the DUBA bands performance the evening before at another Lake Murray bar and enjoyed it so much they came back for more.

The second crowd clearly had a lot more women then the first crowd. The women were all dancing and of course I was dancing too. I do what I call my Painting dance! The ladies were out on the town for "Mommies Night Out". Everyone was having a great time dancing to cover songs by Pink, Adele, Cranberries and many other popular bands. The band played four sets and I created a 16x20 and 2 smaller paintings to the beat! Here is the larger painting I did to the music!

I was drinking Monster Total Zero while the crowd was enjoying drinks like the Dirty Monkey and as the night wore on it become evident that many were feeling no pain. Even so, there were no mishaps, as people got up on the stage and did their dances, no feel over or got tripped up. So it was a wonderful night and a great time was had by all!

Bob, Bear and Me at Homemade Genius Gallery

Saturday May 19th, I found myself in downtown Abbeville SC... at Ian Morris's place. It's a music studio, it's a gallery, it's an art studio, it's a stage and performance center and it is known as Homemade Genius!.The walls were covered with several different artists work including the owner/artist Ian Morris. The featured artist appeared to be Columbia artist Michael Krewjewski and a sprinkling of art by Columbia artist Cedric of Izms of Art. Several other artists work are on display as well.

That evening, I was there to paint to live music. Bob Kilgore and his brother Bear Kilgore having been building up a steady following of fans all over the country. Their blend of music and superior skills combine to create a full band sound with just the two of them. Bob on an acoustic guitar and Bear on electronic keyboard. During the performance, Bob's latest CD "Metamorphosis" was displayed visually with paintings created to various songs on the album. My own entry to the collection was "Meta" which had been painted to the CD at Tapp's Art Center during a Mind Gravy Poetry event this past Dec.

The art event also included poetry readings by various poets, reading their own works and words by Columbia poet John Starino and owner/poet Ian Morris. The interesting thing about this was it added another dimension to the music and the art in this environment. It was a very heady performance which the audience enjoyed heartily. I created a new work of art and named her "Meta II". Currently she is still a painting in progress, but here she is in all her glory.

VARIETY SHOW WITH COMEDY, MUSIC AND ART

Yours Truly, Jean BourQue will be painting live with the Runaway Jug Band at Conundrum Music Hall on Meeting St. W Columbia, SC on Friday April 13th. The venue will have an opening comedy act by Good Clean Fun and that will be followed by an hour and a half music and painting event.

Conundrum Music Hall is a great space with a wonderful sound system and cool vibes... come out and enjoy a night of fun. Casual dress in a relaxed atmosphere designed to showcase music. Plenty of parking, cover $5.

The Runaway Jug Band features lead singer, songwriter, and multiple instrumentalist Brad Sanders playing original music from his latest cd with a few selected covers, mostly Americana, light Rock, Folk and a touch of blues and bluegrass. Truly a versatile and very talented lead performer. He will be joined by brother Frank Sanders on Bass and Vocals.

Trenholm Artists Guild Annual Group Art Show, features art work from their members in the upstairs gallery at HOPF on Devine St. in Columbia, SC. The show is currently running until April 20th.

This Friday the 13th... the HOPF gallery will be packed with the art league members and their fans and friends for a reception from 6-8PM. The awards will be announced at 6:30 pm.

You probably know many of the artist's if you have been following Columbia SC art events.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Call for entries to the 15th Annual Black Mountain Arts and Crafts show have gone out to artists/crafters across the Southeast.
The show will be held June 2 and June 3, 2012 during the peak of the Mountain Air Wildflower Season. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains just 15 miles east of Asheville, Black Mountain has long been a rich and varied arts and crafts community.
From the 1930's to the mid 1950's the town was home for Black Mountain College, which still claims alumni of worldwide renown in the arts. More and more, the town is becoming a center for arts and crafts, antiques and furniture, which attracts tourists from throughout the nation for its unique offerings.
The Old Depot Association is sponsoring the event, giving the show a degree of experience in the arts, marketing, and show management seldom seen in shows of this type.

Abstract Art Show at SC State Museum Now

SC STATE MUSEUM ON THE CORNER OF GERVAIS AND HUGER IN COLUMBIA SC NOW SHOWING.....

Abstract Art in South Carolina: 1949-2012 looks at the evolution and influences of abstract painting and sculpture in South Carolina.

The exhibit includes work by pioneering artists such as William Halsey, Corrie McCallum, J. Bardin, Carl Blair and Merton Simpson, and contemporary artists currently working in communities across South Carolina today, such as James Busby, Shaun Cassidy, Enid Williams, Paul Yanko, Katie Walker and Tom Stanley, among many others.
In all, work by more than 40 artists are included in the exhibition, which focuses on one of the most important aspects of South Carolina’s visual culture.
