There’s a strange dark thread flowing through all of Masha’s photography and it’s hard to pin-point what triggers it – but it’s certainly adds a melancholic feel to these eye-catching shots.

Underwater Nude Photography by Neil Craver

North Carolina photographer and artist Neil Craver has an amazing portfolio full of underwater nude photography. With over 600 photos on his Flickstream, it was quite difficult deciding which to post– but I narrowed it down to the more abstract shots, because I find those to be the most fascinating to me. I like the way the bubbles surround or partly hide the model.

Huichol Art Pieces [skulls & masks]

The Huichols are an indigenous people who live mostly in Northern Central Mexico. From what I understand through my brief Wikipedia readings, much of their art is based on their religious symbolism – emanating from yearly ritualistic travels into the desert to find and take Peyote. Each animal or figure presents a different experience which they had in the peyote ritual.

Over a thousand photos of different pieces of this sort can be seen/bought here.

Amazing photos by Ira Chernova. I’m a huge fan of the shots she has done involving smoke of somekind, unlike many photographers who are taking on this style Ira actually knows how to handle it and capture the beautiful texture of smoke enveloping her models.

Drawings by Steven Ketchum

There’s a slightly grotesque aspect to the blood/pink goo smeared on the drawn faces in Steven Ketchum’s work. Unlike in many cases where I find that the grotesque aspects of the artworks outweigh their meaningfulness – in this case I find many interesting ways of looking at the strangeness of the artworks.

You really need to see these alongside their titles as well.

Painting over Photographs – Artworks by Beatrice Boyle

I love the work Beatrice Boyle does by photographing models (often using the same poses as in any magazine fashion ad) and then painting over them. It adds a great degree to the intensity of the portraits, and definitely separates it from any usual fashion shot.

Explosive Drawings/Paintings by Joey Bates

As this article title sort of suggests – I had a little hard time categorizing or labeling Joey Bates’ work. This shouldn’t distract you from the awesome quality of art Joey Bates creates however, and he himself states the best way to describe his craft would be as a “drainter: a drawer and a painter”.
