The Do Lo Res sofa by Ron Arad conjures up many a visual imagery. At first glance the soft rectangular shapes that make up the design remind me of a city skyline, yet the name, reminiscent of “do re me” draws me to thinking of the digital display of music tempo. I like to think of the random pink cube as a note out of tune from the general melody. Perhaps this is what Arad intended though as the inspiration came from the arts, design, technology and the virtual world.

Each rectangular unit of the sofa is fixed to the platform with steel pins and vary in height from 27.5cm to 83cm.

Mustard is very much like marmite. You either love it hate it. Either way it isn't a problem because this range comes in more colours than Pantone probably have. Those of us living in UK have enjoyed (or not depending on your property ladder status) an enormous and unprecedented boom in the housing market in recent years. Now that a looming bubble burst is upon us we have all considered the financial effects that this will have, but how many of us have considered social effects of the looming effigies to that rapid era of growth? With swathes of unoccupied market apartments likely to become the new slums and sprawling estates of mock Tudor horrors we seem so keen on living in, the UK’s architectural future looks bleak. For what so many people take for granted is the impact of our environment on not only our quality of life but our psychological well being.

And with that in mind I have a new raison d’être, a vision mission I know I’m not alone in dreaming. So my contribution to the cause? Why, I’m going to shamelessly plug some much needed UK based contemporary architecture in the hope we as a nation will start realising that modern can not only be beautiful but also offers us a better way of living and a sustainable future.

First on my list is Edinburgh based Zebrano Design who pride themselves on offering innovative, contextual and well detailed architecture for the 21st century. Bravo!

Typically when we come across examples of contemporary residential architecture, it generally does not call the UK it’s homeland. So imagine our surprise when we came across a whole development of such, not just on UK soil, but in the prestigious and much revered Cotswolds, home of winding lanes, rickety yet charming stone cottages and plenty of antiques. As soon as I saw the Curacao sofa, designed by Fabiaan Van Severen for Indera, I felt like we were old friends. I needed to nurtured by the soft, welcoming lines of this ever-so-comfortable yet ever-so-contemporary chair as if it just, well, fitted somehow.

Intrigued then was I to find that Van Severen’s philosophy compliments my visual instincts. He believes that “furniture and objects have to take their place as if they have always been there”. And boy, I think he did a good job of interpreting that belief into the Curacao. Visually it looks like it has always belonged in my living room. Practically too because little be known at first glance, the back rail of the sofa can be adjusted so that it is the perfect depth for you. Had we been introduced at a young age, my Curacao could have grown with my lengthening legs. Always there, always perfect.

Made from felt fabrics with flatsheet steel feet, the Curacao is available in range of colours including grey, fuchsia and sky blue.
