Match Report

AS23 first draw of the year.

It was a forecasted stormy Sunday afternoon accordingly to the online weather forecast. It was however not as bad as it seems at Bukit Merah Secondary School. Bugis Beatles and AS23 FC started the game at 11.10am with only eight players plus a player loaned from one of the team who played in the earlier match on the pitch.

Starting with 9 players on the pitch going against 11 BBFC players, AS23 FC adopted a defensive strategic play style. The game went pretty even at this state for 10 minutes before more players from AS23 arrived and went onto the pitch.The game was in AS23 FC’s control when all 11 players from AS23 arrived and attacks were pouring into the opponent’s box. There were a couple of close chances but only one was converted in the first half of the game. A short cross brought in from the right by Jieming was well controlled by Jonathan. A back flick was displayed and nicely set up for Fuming to take a shot. The ball made a quick entry into the net with the keeper unable to make a touch even when he came out to cover grounds. 1-0 to AS23FC

More offensive plays were demonstrated in the first half by AS23 FC despite starting with 8 players from AS23 and ending with 11 players. There were many set up plays but none was converted. BBFC did not find their scoring chances despite having a well rounded left winger who just could not find the connecting partners. Weixian, the machine had him well covered. And the defending units in the first half did their job, containing the opponents to no shots on target. Half Time 1-0 to AS23

BBFC subbed in their extra players during the half time while AS23 had to continue the battle with the same 11 pairs of feet. With the strategy working quite well in the first half, AS23 maintained the same strategy for the 2nd half while BBFC went into aggressive mode. Obviously the tactician in the team set the game play to playing hard and tough on the field and obviously a couple of the members took the message ‘tough’ as ‘rough’ like rugby.

The strategy did work well in against the tired legs of AS23 FC as plenty of attacking chances were witnessed by BBFC in the second half. Most of them were repelled neatly by the defense but as the tired legs of AS23 players set in, the sloppy passing and possession of the ball could be witnessed in the game. It was set with more transparency when the BBFC played harder and some rougher. Most of the attacks by AS23 were neatly repelled by the BBFC defense and a couple more got broke down by illegal fouls.

There were numerous uncalled for fouls by the right back of BBFC which was done through sheer brute. The fouls committed would have had him awarded a red card in any competitive games but referee was being too lenient in this situation. In order to keep the game flowing, the referee didn’t put the whistle to much use throughout the game, resulting in a very physical game by both sides. Another incident in the box by Lione of BBFC’s was seen challenging for the ball either for sheer passion for the goal or strategic reason, we do not know. What we do know was Remus, AS23’s keeper suffered a backache and a bleeding nose.

The break by BBFC was eventually taken during the 30th minute in the second half when BBFC was awarded a corner. A nice cross from the left side sends the ball in the box was deflected by Jieming’s shoulder. The ball was unfortunately connected with Junwei, BBFC’s striker, who managed to pull off a light trigger. Remus, keeper of AS23 made a reflective save and had the ball punched out, only as far as the three defending warriors in front of the box. The ball took some knocks between the three players before ending in the back of the net. A pin ball goal was unlucky to be dealt with but part of the game. 1-1 draw by BBFC.

BBFC had a couple of very good chances to take the game but those were wasted. A one on one chance with the keeper and Lione Yeo was not taken down well and eventually sending the ball wide. In another incident, a shot by BBFC’s attacking winger, Tingfu, had the ball glance the woodwork, sending dismay to the beatles, heart pumping moments for the AS23 players and only the woodwork shaking as the concluding result.

The only yellow card shown throughout the game was surprisingly awarded to Jieming for showing his frustration on the pitch in the dying minutes when he was shovel and contacted hard when attacking.

The game ended eventually awarding a win to both teams. 1-1 was the final result leaving both teams off to the showers.

A trivial incident

BBFC had us send to recollect the ball that was send out of the field during the game. Jieming, Weixian and Lance went to retrieve the balls but no balls was seen anywhere around the school. The team management had wanted us to pay for the ball which I thought was not justifiable due to the fact that:

Their substitutes could have collected the ball the moment the ball went out but none apparently went.
They could not locate the ball even when the two responsible players who stayed back to scout for the ball so that we could retrieve it.
Their players were nowhere in sight straight after the game, let alone look for the ball.
We had our share of losing our soccer balls during games and we cannot expect others to pay in the name of the game even when we did considered having an agreement before the game commerce.
There just were not enough of concrete evidences that they started with the number of balls they brought.

What we say:
We played hard as 11 players but the appearing late for the game was very poor mannered from our part. Bugis Beatles were nice enough to give us 5 minutes grace but still that 5 minutes when dued only land us with 8 players from our side. I hope for players to appear on time the next time round.

For those that did not turn up when agreed to, shame on you.

Game wise, we did well in the first half, playing well resulting in a goal but in the 2nd half, we were really performing badly with no connections in the game. I understand the tired legs and the lack of players to subsitute. Let's hope we play harder next game round.

Kudos to the Bugis Beatles players that played hard during the game and earned a draw for yourselves.

Orange Challenge Cup (IV) Futsal Challenge

The Event
Team Orange FC organized their first ever Orange Challenge Cup (IV) Futsal Challenge for their team recently and we were invited guest to double up the fun. There were supposed to be 8 teams in the league but 7 turned up. Original plans were to play 2 sets of round robins (Total of 3 games per round robin in each grouping) but due to the different situations that arise, rules change and everyone had to play by the ear.

The Eventual Rules
Eventually, the game rule was changed due to not being able to book an extra pitch during the first two hours and the walkover of one team that decide not to attend. Wrong inscription on the silver medal contributed slightly to the rules.

Pitch problem was solved easily. The first set of round robin between the two groups materialize on the same pitch for the initial two hours.

Solving the missing team was more tricky. The teams in one group completed their usual rounds but teams in the other group had to endure one walkover. Teams in both groupings were however all allowed to proceed to the knock out stage and thus the round robins were actually just a warm up for every teams.

The initial plan of the second round robin was dropped and replaced by a knockout system. This facilitate the tournament in getting only one winner eventually and at the same time allow teams to maximize their playtime. As there were only seven teams, there was a revival match for one of the knocked out team.

There was adjustment on the pitch as well. Attackers of opposition was not allowed into the semi defense box. Defenders from the same team were however able to. This was implemented to safe guard the keeper's safety. The decision to void that ruling was carried out after the first game was played out since the allocated time was not enough for teams to collect goals if this ruling was applied.

In a situation of dead lock in the knock-out stage, penalties will be introduced. Each team have three chances and if a dead lock persist, a sudden death will sit in. (Meaning, the next goal scored after one round will decide the winner)

The Team
I had managed to gather a team of 8 (5 main and 3 substitutes) to confirm our participation in this event. 6 turned up.

Players who turned up were:
Lance, Kumar, Weixian, Jonathan Soh, Vincent and Eric (Vincent's Friend)

Players that did not appear:
Ariff (Had a morning game and another game at 5pm)
Bright (Meeting his agent to discuss about his rental of new apartment)

Although the team took part in this mini tournament to have fun but the low quantity of commitment and respect shown by some were way below par to start with. Whatever event that crop up should have been known earlier and not just a day before the event. Appearing at the event on time should be the right thing to do too as it shows respect both for your team, the event and as well as for yourself. I should not go on any further but just seek for your self-reflection. And if anyone of you thinks I am being too harsh on it and insist that you are right, do inform me so I will know where you are coming from.

The Hip-cups
The event was considered a big success since everyone enjoyed the game. Everyone played hard and fair and the main objective of the tournament - to have fun was met.

There were however, still some hip-cups in the game which I believe the organizer knows it noticeably. Being a first time organizer for event of this aspect, it was a great attempt but there will always be room for improvement. I know that constructive feedbacks will always be welcomed by our friend, Kelvin Ke, Team Manager of Team Orange FC and his organizing party/team to make their second event ever more successful than the first.

The team that backed out in the last minute should have been anticipated and covered by preparing with spare players from the team readily to form a last-minute squad to stand in. It’s usually not possible in a big size tournament but for an event as such, in the name of fun and organized by the team, this could have been possible.
There were too many layers of rule changings and it was too frequent for the liking. The lack of one court delayed the event slightly and the lack of a team resulted in a change in competition format. The change of the rule on court was changed after the first game due to the difficulties in scoring. These were unexpected changes to troubleshoot for the event (I find this impromptu changes great troubleshooting skill) either to facilitate the game or made it more flowing but was a tad too many for the teams to adapt to. Many players were usually drawn to the tournament with a set up or strategy in mind but all that had to be readjusted accordingly.
Although the teams were told to bring two different color sets of jersey, I thought there could have been a set of bibs.

The Would-Be-Nice-To-Have
These might be some very demanding recommendations but demanding requests will just fabricate a future top class event.

A timer and clock would be good to be placed somewhere around for everyone to take note of.
A mini interesting performance or something equivalent (Massive event photo taking?) that could be arranged to keep the players and supporters till the end to witness the prize giving ceremony would make the event more unforgettable.

The Brilliant
For an event of such, I felt the organizer deserves a pat on their back for creating a fine memory for many. I believe many like me consider this event successful because we all met one achievement we all gathered for – to enjoy the game.

To touch on finer details, I would like to comment on the following for a job well done.

Drinks were enough for everyone, especially on such a humid day.
Location chose was great and would add a cherry on topping if they had spectator stands.
Referees were doing a fantastic job in ensuring a good flow of play although there were times they could not see some errors but still a great job.
The changing of teams into the court was well controlled as well.
Cost of event was well kept within budget.
Troubleshooting skills in the whole event was well designed

The Teams

Group A
West Siders FC

One of the two invited guest teams with a huge amount of youth and energy in its ranks. During the whole afternoon, team captains were heard plotting man marking strategies to stop "the guy in singlet" (aka Ting Fu). These tactics apparently failed as the West Siders finished undefeated in the competition, bagging the Gold Medals eventually.

Police and Thieves

A team made up of 2 policemen and 4 "thieves" as described by Yong Keng, who came up with the team name. Lost the opening game against the eventual winners (West Siders) but came back strongly in the 2nd round by beating Towners FC. The guys in the team may look old, but they are certainly young at heart.

AS23FC

The 2nd of the invited teams and old friends of Team Orange from the now defunct Playsports league. Out of the 5 games played (including knockout stages), AS23FC suffered 4 losses but managed a credible draw against West Siders FC before bowing out via the penalty kicks.

Group B
Team Guapo (not in picture, Lian Hua)

On paper, one of the strongest teams in the tournament with a good blend of youth, experience, skills, speed and physique. Steamrolled their way into the finals with an impressive haul of 11 goals in the 6 games played. The team came agonisingly close to being the champions but faltered during the penalty shootout in the final game against West Siders FC.

Tagged as the "underdogs" in the group, LASG finished a credible second during the Group stages. Kevin Gan was ever so prolific, scoring important goals along the way to propel the team into the semi finals of the competition.

Towner Rovers

A team tipped for honours by the T.O Gaffer prior to the start of the competition. After an encouraging 1-0 win against AS23FC in the opening game, the rovers faltered and lost their next 3 games as they crashed out of the tournament.

SPAIN

Loosely translated as Spare Players who Are In No-man's-land. Despite crashing out of the tournament without a single goal score to their name, the team still managed a positive aspect, with Ah Gu unveiling a hidden talent in the goalkeeping department.

The Encounters
Match 1 – Vs Towner Rovers (1-0) Loss

Our team started the game with Towner Rovers (TR). TR played very defensive football from start, passing the ball in their half gaining most of the possession. There were more attacking from the team towards the last five minutes of the game when they finally got a break in the final seconds of the game. A lose ball from the right back gave TR a chance for a one on one with the keeper and eventually the win given to them.

Match 2 – Vs Lor Ah Soo gang (1-0) Loss

With Kumar as the keeper for the match, it was granted a +1 aura to the net. There were more attacking in this game from AS23 but none found the net. A goal was conceded in the last few minutes due to mishandling once again but a good game overall.

Match 3 – Vs Team Guapo (3-1) Loss

Guapo was a more aggressive team compared to previous teams encountered. Facing such a team, AS23 was deem less of an aggressor and ball possession was mostly in Guapo's. A quick goal was scored in the early minutes when a ball was slide in through the defenses leaving him a prefect position to slot in the ball. Two more goals were subsequently conceded before Vincent collected a consolation goal for the team in the late minutes of the game.

Match 4 – Vs West Siders FC (0-0) (P: 2-1) Loss

AS23 had 3 minutes to rest before entering this knockout stage of 12 minutes (2 halves of 6 minutes each). In the game, AS23 was cushioning the offense of the West Siders FC pretty well and they could find little openings to penetrate. The team had their chances but the shots were perry away nicely by their small but agile keeper. No results was documented in the 12 minutes and penalties was the only way to decide a winner.

Lance took the first shot for AS23 only to be neatly collected by the keeper putting the team straight into disadvantage. Weixian saved the shot taken by WSFC's first taker, bringing the team into level terms.

Jonathan, second taker for AS23 managed to fake the keeper before launching a shot that was unfortunate to meet the pole. Weixian was helpless against a hard shot taken by the second taker for WSFC. The direction dived was right but nothing much could be done.

With all hopes on his shoulder, Kumar, the third penalty taker, took the pressure with no pressure. He slotted the ball into the top left with no worries. Weixian was left to handle the last shot but failed and the team had to gather another loss due to the shootout.

Match 5 – Vs Team Guapo (2-0) Loss

An unexpected loser revive game was introduced for AS23 and once again with 3 minutes to recover and a player loan from Team Orange to defend the net, the team play against Guapo once again. Game was held scoreless for a while before one was slotted in with little means to save. A second goal came after a nice fake from their striker before taking a wild shot that was really left unstoppable and I really deem it the shot of the game or at least for those that we encountered.

This is the second encounter between AS23 and British Club Football Association. It seems when both teams meets, we never fails to have a major supporter - the rain.

Due to the heavy downpour located at many areas of Singapore, many players from AS23 were doubtful if the game will carry on. Due to this doubt, the players were either late or AWOL. This is not encouraging at all despite the rain and a new set of rules will be implemented shortly.

With only 12 players to battle through the 90 minutes, the team was more organized and match fit compared to the previous few games played. BCFC were in their attacking boots in the first 30 minutes as they seem to have imported a new dark-skinned-striker from Kuala Lumpur (at least that was what his jersey says). A shot was taken from him in the first attack which was brilliantly punched away for a corner by Ariff, the gate keeper of AS23.

Many great attempts were made but not converted by BCFC. The ball either hit/glance the pole which resulted in an out or clearance from AS23 defenders and one great miss by the young striker in BCFC. The ball was neatly crossed in only to meet the wrong contact of the striker's boots and blasted into the other pitch.

BCFC made their first break when a ball was made through the middle to their left winger. The ball was not intercepted properly by Kumar, one of the twin tower of AS23 defense, was slowed down nicely for the winger to do his run. Iskandar, the stand in for the right back position gave his chase but was outpaced eventually by their winger. The ball was delivered into the box with only a keeper to beat by the lone striker. 1-0, BCFC leads.

The second goal came late in the second half when a cross was sent in from BCFC's right winger when he spotted the running striker cutting into the defenses. Kumar was there to defend but could not get him in time, in style. A shot was taken and deflected onto Kumar's leg, giving the ball a weird spin that confused the keeper and eventually into the net. 2-0 and halftime.
The second half started with Kumar sitting out to rest and observes the game. The back four became unsettled without him but managed to pull through the game until a corner strikes. Without the commanding figure at the back, the defense was starting to lack the focus and the break eventually breaks when a header was not cleared properly and the ball floated into the ball between Weixian and Bright who happened to be at the same spot looking at the same ball but the ball met neither heads. The ball floated into the net after a second bounce off the duo, tricking the keeper into another direction. 3-0 and the morale dips further.

AS23 held on the game and were more furious in their attack after the third concede and the game was eventually back in the team’s stride. AS23 drew one back when a throw in from their right met one of the players and eventually forced the keeper to make a weird punch/touch. The ball met nowhere and no one leaving Fuming the chance to pounce on lonely ball. 3-1 and AS23 are back in the game.

The rest of the game was eventually a case of strong attacks against organized defense. BCFC only breaks on counter and eventually got their break in the dying minutes when a corner clearance was quickly converted into a counter down their left wing. BCFC winger managed to pull out some tricks but was contained before the ball was passed to their reinforcement that pulled a cross-shot. The ball made a nice drop into the net, going pass the keeper to add another point to their team. 4-1 to BCFC.

The Manager of Orange Football Club is organizing a non-profit and fun mini tournament titled Orange Challenge Cup IV (5-a-side mini tournament). Game Rules (Rules of tournament are deprived on a basis of 8 teams)

'Orange Challenge Cup IV' adopt a round robin tournament style.
Each game plays for 10 minutes.
Teams collect 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and no point for losing.

First Round

Teams will be divided into 2 groups and teams will play in a round robin system.

Second Round

Winners and Runner ups of each group will play in the 'Gold Plate Grouping' while 3rd and 4th placing in each group will play in the 'Silver Plate Grouping' in another round of round robin system.

Final Round

First and Second placing in the 'Gold Plate Group' will vie for the Gold Plate Winner.
First and Second placing in the 'Silver Plate Group' will vie for the Silver Plate Winner.

BLAS claims win

The second game of AS23FC this month was a match up against BLAS, which was also our second game against them. The pitch was surprisingly sandy and hard and accordingly to some regulars who played there pretty often, it was an unusual sight. The game was in an almost prefect set-up - a good weather, just referee, two enthusiastic team with good number of subs and a 'sandy' but playable pitch.

The whistle starts the game off with BLAS starting the attack. A spread down their left wing sends the ball in danger zone but was cleared for a corner in time. The corner was taken quickly, cleared and countered by AS23FC. Three passes was all that took to send it to our striker, Joe's feet and the next three seconds was all that took to land the team in a leading position in the early minutes. Joe received the ball and had to face two defenders all out to pull him down and a stunned keeper to beat. All that obstacles were made easy under his well managed feet. 1-0 to AS23FC.

One goal was never enough to beat a determined team and that fact was proven as BLAS did not drown themselves in sorrow and starts stringing passes after passes to form deadly attacks. BLAS broke their duck when a prefect measured cross during a counter met their speedy winger. The winger that draws in the right back and keeper was not a selfish man as he head the ball towards the striker that was running in who easily slots in with a header. 1-1 equalizer.

BLAS permit their heighten morale to continue and their rampant counter-attacks created another goal in the 30th minute. Ferocious strings of attack from AS23 were cushioned well and two defenders were left behind to handle the counterattack. Being experienced in their counter obviously, BLAS’s striker left himself open after a couple of easy steps and received the ball to slot it in the bottom right of the pole. 2-1 to BLAS.

A hard collision occurred before the whistle was blown when AS23’s keeper, centre back and BLAS’s young striker met just outside the box. Ivan, the centre back suffered the major damages when he tried to protect the young player while Remus escape with light cut on his right elbow due to the hard pitch. Ivan who suffered light concussion was send to the side to rest and our flamboyant midfielder, Rizman was sent in to fill the gap to protect the throne. 2-1 was the score line during halftime with BLAS leading.

Substitutions were made during the 2nd half and with the numerous attacking players to choose from, there was no choice but to have some of the attackers to cover the defences. Remus had to clean his wound and Lance stood in for the keeper spot.

2nd half witnessed AS23 going all out attack and the attacks were very well orchestrated but met with disappointing finishes. BLAS, on the other hand, took their chances well as their counter attacks work perfectly well. 7 minutes into the second half, BLAS was awarded another goal when their team’s ‘nakata’ beat the last man and went one on one with the keeper. The keeper was easily beaten and the ball was slotted into an empty net. 3-1 to BLAS

The last goal by BLAS was a blunder by the keeper who was passed a ball by the centre back after he retrieved the ball from the right. The ball was however passed down to in hope of finding the midfielders, only to be intercepted by their poaching striker. Left with only the keeper to beat, it was a free goal for BLAS. 4-1 to BLAS.

AS23 had plenty of shots on, near and missing targets. Should all attempts be taken into account, the score line would easily be swayed towards AS23. A record of 12 shots were taken in the second half alone and the score line wasn’t exactly a clear reflection of the game but both teams did demonstrate a good game with BLAS emerging winner.

What we say:
The game was not a bad game played and we were marred by a series of bad events. What went wrong was bad finishes, bad defending during moments of the game, and the mixture of new and old bloods where there were not much synchronize and mounding to the different play style done yet. We can be more passionate too and I believe the team will continue to improve. The referee did comment that it was a very close game and could either team could easily emerge winner, just that it was not us this time round.

Victory claimed by White 'heads'.

Its a terrible evening for football. It's up to the heaven's mercy for a match to be written down in the memory lane. The game eventually commerce after 20 minutes of patience for the downpour to subside and lightning to appear less threatening.

Rizman found a gap after a couple of passes straight after the whistle went off. The one-twos made with various team mate found him one on one with keeper and a shot sends keeper the wrong way. The whiteheads were caught napping, still not awake from the prefect sleeping weather. 1-0 to AS23FC

That early goal woke up the entire team and rallied by their wingback, the team firmed up their play and started pouring attacks into AS23's defense zone. Most attacks was well cushioned but the first that let through came from a cross from their winger into the back pole. The well measured cross met the header of BCFC's young striker's head and into the net. Equalizer by the BCFC, 1-1

Another goal was conceded soon after as BCFC attack in numbers, knocking on AS23FC's shaky door. Ball was knocked around outside the box and a shot was eventually fired from just outside the box. 2-1 to BCFC

Last goal of the half was created from an identical cross from BCFC's left winger, where the ball was sent in once again to the back pole. This time round, the ball met the head of the running midfielder and that goal concluded the half time scoreline. 3-1 to BCFC

Plenty of knocking around was made in the Second half and possession was mostly in AS23FC's control but finishes was disappointing to draw any goals back. Ironically, a final minute freak goal was conceded when a freekick from midfield was taken. The ball was sent into the box but met no heads, legs or players but the hard ground and the bounce sent the ball into the top right corner with no one being able to react to it. 4-1 to BCFC to conclude the game.

What we say:
We lost on a few grounds. The headers, the finishes, the string of passes and finally the support. All this can be improved by more games played together. 'Nuff said.

With the growing numbers of Expats in Singapore, no doubt they have a huge squad and this is their 2nd team we are going to play against. Soccer Review

Arrangement with Belgian and Luxembourg Association of Singapore Football Club, in short we call them BLAS, never fails be filled with obstacles.

I remembered the first time the team played in April 08', AS23 was not able to gather a team of 11 to play and had to loan players from BLAS to complete the friendly, resulting in a 6-3 total defeat. The second occasion was in Dec 08' where we had promised a rematch but due to insufficient players and the heavy downpour on that Sunday afternoon, the game was once again cancelled. This third occasion which was arranged 1 month beforehand was thought to be a successful attempt as nothing seems to be in the way. Unfortunately and yes unfortunately, the obstacle emerge out late this time.

Scheduled in the mid-noon, BLAS had booked a field at Clementi Woods Sec while AS23 was in charge of hiring a referee from the FAS. The game started slightly later as players from AS23 were late as some had games in the morning. There was slight drizzle before the game which made it a very conducive environment to play a game but the sun did not fail to make its grand appearance right at the start of the whistle. BLAS got the choice of field and the game starts at 3.15pm.

Attacks were pouring in from both sides but the AS23 seems more deadly with their attacks as connections between the attackers were more co-ordinated. BLAS were drawing in the attacks and absorbing only breaking on the counter. The first goal came in from a shot in the box after some messy passing resulting in a corner. The striker was not properly marked and was given time to make a shot which caught the keeper off guard. An early goal was conceded unexpectedly.

The second goal was conceded towards the end of the first half when an attack start from BLAS in the midfield with their 'Nakata' starting the wave after winning the midfield battle. The ball was passed around the field before the ball was spray in from their right side of the pitch and eventually reaching their striker. The BLAS striker controlled the ball and made a quick turn and shot leaving no reaction to both the defenders and the keeper. It was a tight angle and well done to the striker for even able to attempt the shot.

Drama starts from this stage as the referee stops the game and declared halftime when the 30 minute mark have not even been reached. The disturbance declaring himself to be an official from SSC declared that the field was not fit for playing and that the field was not booked by BLAS. After some explanation, the story was pieced up and declared to as the field originally booked by guy named Eugene, supposingly an organizer from EFL. He cancelled the field booking a day before, declaring it unfit for playing. BLAS on the other hand had booked the field a month ago but realised that they have booked it on the previous day instead as seen on a piece of paper the disturbance have brought along.

And so the disturbance came along, declare the field not booked by BLAS and wanted us to leave the field when we have played halfway through. Both teams affirmed that they do not want to leave the pitch and wish for the game to carry on with the 2nd half but disturbance insisted that we leave, and threatened to bringing in the policemen to escort us away. Both team offered nuremous solutions but landed on deaf ears as disturbance have no intention to help.

So game was cancelled and AS23 had to pay for the referee as it was deem that they were different entity.

AS23 went off to fufill their soccer itch at NUS where they were lucky enough to find a group of China players training. We challenged them with 10 men and they agreed to it. AS23 fufilled their attacking training in this game as lots of shots and goals were witnessed in this game.

Kudos to the players that made it for this game.

Dear players of AS23 FC, I would like to express my intention on some matters which would require assistance, commitment and contribution from each and every individual who wish to enjoy weekend soccer.

Firstly, I would like to reorganise the team so that we can take part in some league. There are many advantages to this decision but the major benefit is being able to play regular soccer without any interruption as there will be a management to take care of field, referees and co ordination. Playing in a league gives us an aim. We will be more focus on each match on getting the 3 points and have a goal of obtaining targeted ranking in the league.

Thus, the second point will be a pool of players who have the passion for soccer every week or at least not put social football as their last priority. We are usually able to forecast 2 to 3 games in advance and thus proper planning should be able to be made. I don’t need a pool of talented players, although it is obviously a bonus to have one but I hope to see the same players on the field so we can shape up a playing style together. Constant pumping of ball to nowhere does not make our weekend soccer very enjoyable.

And so my final point is to know who is prepared for the challenge. I am very attracted to form one team to take part in our season four. And I am sure there are some of you out there who have the same intention. I don’t care if you were from Criminals FC in the past or were just introduced recently during any friendly because to me, everyone is now a 23ers as long as you have sweat or bleed for the team. I want to acquire a team of 18 to 22 players where we can play hard for the team to win some glory. So who’s interested?

I had to apologise for being low in morale this whole year and did not organise too many games due to us facing the lack of players and was also very much distracted by my working life. However, I can promise that I will not give up on the team and the blog and am now very much motivated in finding more friendly games to play. We will figure out the best playing style and players this way.

I would also like to take this chance to show my appreciation for the guys who have volunteered to link up teams to play with and as well as those who appear at the call of one SMS and definitely appear no matter rain or shine and holding on no matter how the team fare. You guys have really inspired me and I will not let you all down by continuing to make our weekends be filled with passion. Continue to push on with the right discipline and passion.

It was most unfortunate as Bobby had left us in a bike accident but not our memories for him. Many of us may not know who he is since Bobby debuted for the team on 19th July 2009 in a friendly game as a right back resulting in a 2-1 win against a mixed Chinese and Indian team. He was delighted playing in the game although he did mention his lack of match fitness and mentioned he would definitely use field soccer as a form of exercise to strengthen himself up. His depart was greatly grieved by the team, especially his colleague and close friends, namely Jonathan, Philips, Fuming and other SCDF members in the team.

I would like to send out a message to all bikers out there to ride safety and obey safety as the One and only most important rule.

A match for Bobby.

This match was postponed for 15 minutes, followed by a cancellation before being convinced to an agreement to continue if the rain did not go away in 10 more minutes. The rain did go away and so the game continue as per planned.

As Bobby departure was made known to the team, the team promised to play hard for him this game, no matter what the outcome will be. We gathered to shout ‘Bobby’ as suggested by Bright to remind ourselves that the game was for him.

AS23 let in an early game. Within seconds, the ball was stolen, dribbled in and shot into goal when AS23 was still not warmed up. The ball was shot when the striker was amidst 2 defenders and slotting into a rushing out keeper who tried to block but failed. 1-0 to MET FC.

It seems like MET FC have advantage since the start of game with the early goal scored. The game was even with MET FC attacking using their wingers effectively to create dangerous attacks, threatening AS23 in many occasions. AS23 attacking style was more direct, drilling in from the centre. Lixing, Joe and Fuming penetrated well and with Nicholas and Bright providing support, every attack was dangerous as well. Joe took his chances well and strikes hard from way out of the penalty box. The ball found top right and dip into the net rendering the keeper useless even when diving to the right angle to prevent the goal. 1-1 and AS23 are back in business.

Fuming put the icing on the cake in the 31st minute when a through pass rocketed its way to him. With plenty of work still left to be done, Fuming made it look easy as he manipulated the keeper out of his guarding zone before lobbing the ball into an open net. 2-1 and AS23 leads.

MET FC fight on and begun tough pressuring stealing a ball when a throw in was launched back to the defence and a back pass backfired. Ball was stolen and easily slotted into the net as the misplaced ball left both keeper and central defender stranded out of position. 2-2 and MET FC draw to go into half time.

MET FC strikes early in the 2nd half when a ball was passed through the centre. Lance was there but not doing the right thing of clearing the ball away in time, leaving MET FC quick feet winger catch up to the ball. He was left to dribble into an open box with right back, Guowei giving the long leg winger a chase of his left. Given no choice, the winger had to be brought down legally if not illegally in the box. A penalty was awarded inevitably and AS23 first choice keeper, Ariff was left with a heavy responsibly. With an instinct of most great keeper, Ariff predicted the ball will be strike at him in the hardest manner and true enough; the ball went to Ariff’s left with mighty force. Ariff dived through and was just inches to palming the ball away but the ball slit through the Ariff’s underarm and gave MET FC the lead. 3-2 and the exciting game continue.

The weather had by this time turn scorching hot after the thunderous rain and tired legs were the result of inconsistent matches played with most players lacking match fitness. Substitutes were used up, reused and made unusable further for the game. MET FC made sure they were unreachable when they gave a final blow in this game by hitting in a fourth goal for themselves. Great passing were created before the creation of the goal. A long shot was made, deflected by Ariff and finally found the wrong player in the box before it was easily placed into the net. 4-2 to MET FC.

The scoreline would not have been so decent if not for Ariff’s numerous saves. There were at least 4 occasions that Ariff was there to save the team as one-on-one situation was created but Ariff showed the guys why he was nominated the number one choice keeper in AS23 and Criminal’s FC. His market value no doubt rocketed after this exciting 6 goal thriller.

What we say:
Although the game turns out to be another losing one, I think the team played hard together and fought together to the very end. Jianhui made sure the team played their dosage of soccer by suggesting the game. We also witness the sacrifices of Nichola’s boots, the commitment of Mike and Weixian who had to rush off to school for lessons straight after the game and debuted Guowei showing us his bicycle-kick for a clearance. Lixing and Ariff who rushed down to the field for their second game and Lixing for playing in the game even when his leg was so cramped and painful. Joe, Fuming, Lixing and Bright were all showing they cared for the team by giving instructions to everyone to make sure the game play was linked. Overall, we lost the game but gained the bonding of another level for the team.

SCDF Platoon Random Club Fights Back and Topple Odds

SCDF Platoon Random Club had started the game with only 9 men with the 10th man joining only 10 minutes later. They had little chances as AS23 did what they were supposed to, attack. AS23 had many great chances but did not capitalize them to secure the game. Holding their fort and playing well, SCDF PRC Club did however let in their first goal to the striking guy from AS23, Jonathan. A through ball set him open, leaving him alone with the keeper. Tempting the keeper out a few inches meant that he had the chance to slot the ball to the bottom right of the pole. 1-0 to AS23.

It wasn't a long lead as AS23 quickly gave back the lead when SCDF PRC Club was left open to have a shot on goal. The shot wasn't all strong but filled with spin, spinning its way to hit the pole and into the goal. Keeper was left stranded to the ground at the happening of the incident. 1-1 equalizer by SCDF PRC Club.

The game went both ways with nothing much to mention except for a foul play by SCDF PRC Club. A push in the back on Weixian found him with a disgusting and gross bruise as his knee met the sandy and hard pitch. Nothing exciting till halftime, ending it to a 1-1 draw.
SCDF PRC Club's 11th guy appeared to assist his team, boosting their team play and widening their passing range. Commendable Weixian, who had a gigantic knee bruise, persisted to continue the game for both the team and for his passion.

As if found new spirit, SCDF PRC Club operated like a new team as they adopt a total new hybrid play style, passing and holding onto the ball like Brazilian stars and spreading it to the wingers to do the crosses like England heroes. AS23 did well by holding the play well until the next ball which was drilled in from the left wing. SCDF PRC Club’s star striker dribbled his way past 2 defenders before launching a shot which was palmed away by the keeper. Unfortunately, the deflected ball found an empty SCDF PRC Club player as he volley in the open gate. 2-1 to SCDF PRC Club.

AS23 found another scare as a free kick was awarded to SCDF PRC Club when keeper was found guilty picking up the ball after putting it to ground. The ball made its way past the top left of AS23 top pole, giving the crowd a major scare.

SCDF PRC Club ended the game with style and tarnishing any hopes left for AS23 as their centre midfielder took a giant hit on the ball. The ball came in from their left winger who had done a good job by drawing half of the defence focus on him. Keeper dived to the correct direction but the shot was too quick to be reacted. A wasted attempt by the keeper meant another goal for SCDF PRC Club as they clinch the win for themselves. 3-1 was the final result when the whistle went off.

What we say:
Our greatest mistakes was to not capitalize in the first half when they do not have full strength and missing all the chances we had was the greatest mistake. However, the team did play hard and Kudos to that. SCDF PRC Club on the other hand, capitalize on all chances awarded to them and aside from the ugly foul in the first half, the game was played in good spirit.

Tsubasa Exterminate Lacklustre AS23 Football Club

There was obviously an immense difference in the teams, be it in team size or in team discipline. Tsubasa was an enthusiastic batch as they had already finished their warm up at 2.30pm and were doing some drills at 2.45pm before they gather to talk about strategies. To see a contrast, AS23 was the perfect team to compare with. Players were strolling in at 3.15pm and even by then there wasn’t enough players to field.

2 goals were conceded in the first half with the first half made in the first 10 minutes by Tusbasa’s striker who made a shot just after entering the penalty box. The ball went through a few legs before drifting its way into the right netting. The second goal was a thunderous shot from outside the box without any warning. That shot silence AS23 totally, lowering the morale further.

Bright was sent to the sidelines after injuring his ankle in a tackle and he joined Jonathan who had a fever that day. You could sense his agony when he got the ankle treatment. The pain was not entirely from the ankle but the torture of his retirement from that game.

Second half was a nightmare for AS23 as Tsubasa found the keeper’s weakness – Long shots. Shots were fired non stop, whenever there was a chance, an opening in the defence or sometime just out of random.

Khalis couldn’t take it anymore when they kept exposing Jianhui’s weakness to long shots and change into his keeper gloves to take over the heavy load from Jianhui. Jianhui was a brave keeper who excels in one on one situation and usually surprise everyone with his capability to save the team from hopeless situations. But long ball was his weak point, which was sadly exploited. Jianhui allowed three more shots on target to go in but he was not to be blame for as his defenders were not a great cushion for him.

Khalis made a couple of great saves when Tsubasa continued the long shot treatment but Khalis had higher ratings when it comes to long shot. He however let in a goal towards the end of the game. Tsubasa maintained possession of the ball well and tried another strategy to penetrate and get another goal after their long shot strategy failed. They passed and maintained the ball well. The ball was finally sent to an empty striker who drives a long shot packed with power that Khalis could not reach even when dived to the right direction. 6-0 was the final result which marks the total annihilation of AS23.

What we say:
Lack of chemistry between players as there were many new faces. Lack of team depth with only 2 players. Players were rusty due to too little match fitness. Players were ill discipline too. Punctuality is a form of respect for yourself and your team mates. Still Kudos to Tsubasa for doing a well done job.

Head to head wins for AS23 Football Club

The third game for AS23 FC this year started late as referee did not appear until 15 minutes later. 12 blue attired warriors battled the white warriors who started the game with 10 men. It was a relief for both sides as the weather was cooling enough for both teams to last.

With the lack of 1 player, the white warriors came under pressure typically right from the start. They absorbed the attack imposed on them from the start and played with one striker up front while AS23 FC attack with a 4-4-2 strategy and defend with a 4-5-1 dropping Fuming to the midfield to help out the midfield while defending.

Things couldn’t be worse when No.17 from the white warriors had his old ankle knocked when he high booted. Bright was swinging his leg to attempt a cross when the high boot came and went. With 9 men on the field at 18th minute, possession was mostly one sided in the first half but score line was however not so one sided.

Fuming had a couple of chance with the closest in the 23rd minute. Fuming connected with a header after Weixian’s sends in a spinning corner which barely scrapped through the top pole of the goal. Shortly, Bright had his chance too if not for his hesitation to shoot in fear of injuring the opposition’s keeper with his swing. He entered a one on one situation after a direct pass from Jonathan. In the 35th minute, Kumar the right back had his chance by taking a cross-shot chance but the ball didn’t stay down. Many triggers were not pulled in the first half by AS23 FC.

No. 17 and another defender entered the field in the 30th minutes, totalling their players on field up to the perfect 11.

The white warriors had their chances, with the closest being a mistake at their left flank when Kumar had the ball stolen and the wing left empty. Their left back took the ball and brought it up to bring a brilliant short cross in right through the defence in front of their striker. The man had all the time in the world but not the composition to take a calm shot. First half was tied with 0-0.

In the second half, AS23 FC drew early blood when a chaotic situation happens in the opposition’s box 5 minutes after the whistle was blown. The keeper did not have a good grip of the ball and Fuming took the chance to steal an easy ball into the netting. 1-0 to AS23 FC.

The white warriors changed their strategy and played a 4-4-2 attacking stance and there were more attacking down their right and left. The waves came but were smoothen by AS23 FC’s defence line. A couple of leakages were lucky to not be converted as they had at least 3 chances to lob the offline keeper.

In the 50th minute, Fuming missed an open header shortly from the corner. This however did not hinder his form to edge score more goals.

AS23 FC converted their second goal when attacks down the right side prove fruitful. Fuming was left unmarked in the box when a direct pass was made to him from the right wing. He tricked the keeper out and slot in an easy goal. 2-0 to AS23FC and a second goal for Fuming.

With the white warriors down 2 goals, No. 10 from the white warriors could no longer hide his aggressive nature and tried numerous time to steal the ball away from the keeper with dangerous act like showing out his stubs sliding towards the keeper for 50/50 ball and another incident, jumping and kneeing the keeper’s ball into the 6 yard box which was supposing the ‘king’ area for the keeper. Ariff was lucky to escape both times unhurt though.

The last 10 minutes proved to be crucial to the white warriors as they put on their attacking boots. Waves and waves of attack came and AS23 FC kept behind the ball to blast the incoming tsunami away. Jianhui, AS23 FC’s left back make a crucial tackle to earn himself a yellow card and a freekick for the opposition. Ariff made at least 2 important goal line saves to keep the scoreline advantageous to AS23 FC thus winning him the Man of the Match.

Drama happened in the 84th minute when a corner sent into the box proves caused confusion between Kumar and Ariff. Kumar wanted to head the ball back to keeper hands but Ariff was on his way dashing for the ball. Kumar kept still but proved too towering for Ariff, with both players losing the ball. Ariff fell and got the ball but was stolen from No.10 where he knee Ariff in the ribcage. Referee blew his whistle for a goal instead of a foul. 2-1 and MC&I FC scores.

AS23 FC got the win when the referee finally blew his whistle to end the game. 2-1 and the winner was AS23 Football Club.

Special Report!!!
The next day after the game, Ariff was admitted into the hospital for a day with a traumatic injury to the kidney.

Kumar was informed of the situation and was accused of injuring Ariff for being a towering figure but he calmly responded with an SMS, ‘No lor… Is he eat wrong thing la. I never touch him.’

Straight after discharge from the hospital, Ariff rebuke No.10 of the white warriors for the injury, jumping into defence for his 1.8m defender.

What we say:
Despite the lack of match fitness for many of the players and the introduction of 2 debut players, not forgetting the lack of subs and a couple of advantages like more players for a quarter of the game. I think we deserve the win. A few offside trap was wrongly given but those were part and parcel of the game so I say we have to work harder still for the next game.

Match Report

First win of the year for the 23s.

Brazil won the confederation cup with a 3-2 win over US while Spain won 3-2 over South Africa to get a second runner-up. AS 23 FC created a 3-2 win over FC Bonito on their second game of the year.

Rusting through nearly half a year without field soccer, almost everyone was seriously lacking on match fitness. The only fitness some of the players accumulated through the months were passion driven out on the basketball courts.

The pitch played on seems slightly smaller in size but was of much better condition then many others. FC Bonito’s full squad arrived at 2.30pm while players were strolling in at 2.55pm and taking their time to change and get ready for the game. Referee was also on time and urges the game to start on time since the weather seems ready to give a shower. Game started at 3.05pm with AS23 FC going with a 4-4-2 game play against FC Bonito packing the midfield with a 4-5-1 defensive play.

First half was more or less taken into AS23 FC’s stride as FC Bonito absorbs plenty of damage with their play style. AS 23 FC on the other hand strings up offence and won many challenge to create chances after chances.

Our first converted chance came in the 20th minute when Patrick Yang won the ball and made a dash for the left wing. Swapping a few pointers with their midfielders, he saw Kumar making a dash for the box. A quick pass was launched and was almost intercepted if not for a deflection in between the legs of their defender. Still the ball landed in a position where Kumar was able to launch a shot. 1-0 and Kumar scores in the right net for his first time in the team.

The second goal came towards the end of the first half when a counter from the left side of AS23 FC was launched just in time. Lance Sum received a ball from Patrick Yang and made his run up the pitch before making a pass to Nicholas Lim. Nicholas set the ball for Joe and he blast the ball into the top left goal netting. 2-0 and the half ended.

The rain got out of hand after the whistle and the game was temporary stopped to see if it subside and if there were anymore lightning. Both teams were enthusiastic to continue even with the rain showing the passion in both teams.

The game finally started again after 15 minutes wait when they confirmed no more lightning due to safety issues. AS23 FC decides to substitute in the remaining players, changing Lance Sum, Kumar, Patrick Yang and Nicholas down for Jason Feng, Khalis, Ting Fu and Waycherng respectively remaining with a 4-4-2 strategy while FC Bonito changed their play style to a 4-4-2 attacking which obviously was a real good change as they recovered 2 goals in 7 minutes.

The first goal came in within minutes of the second half when an attack from FC Bonito’s left wing slice through the defence. The ball took a few bounce in the box before making its way into the net. Confusion was still in the air when FC Bonito was cheering. 2-1 and FC Bonito is back in the game fast and furious.

Second goal was conceded when FC Bonito cut through AS23 FC right wing and won the right back and continue the run through to the centre back before launching a shot at the 6 yard box. The ball took a slight deflection before landing in the netting. 2-2 and the game were levelled.

When everything turns out worst, things just somehow is able to worsen. Kumar substituted in for Khalis to root the defence but he made an important but terrible tackle at the incoming attacker. Kumar launch his leg out to get the ball but got the legs instead. The referee pointed to the spot immediately and the air was tense indefinitely. The ball went to the bottom left and strikes the pole before going out for a goal kick. The penalty missed and score remains 2-2.

The goal kick was taken and AS23 FC went on a fast counter with a few passes before Melion Tan got the ball and was bought down in the box. Penalty, his time on the other end of the pitch! The penalty was however not converted as the shot slices through the post and went out. Another penalty missed the net and score still remains 2-2.

Edison, the centre back substituted himself out because the stubs on his boots totally came off and Lance Sum went in to cover up the position.

More pressing was done by FC Bonito at this stage and luckily was not converted into goals. It was fortunate that a free kick close to the box was awarded to AS23 FC that was converted in the 70th minutes of the game. A low and deep free kick pierce through the air and into the left netting of FC Bonito’s Net to make the game a win for AS 23 FC. 3-2, the final score and the victory AS23 FC have been looking for a long time.

What we say:
I would say we did well despite the long 6 months break and the game was played in good and fair spirits with both teams enjoying their passion. Its a pity FC Bonito did not feature their full team due to their regular players not being around. I would say both team did well enough to come out with an exciting game.

2009 - 9 goal conceded to celebrate the new year

Plenty of goals was scored in this game. 9 to be exact to celebrate the year of 2009 but all goals came from only one team.

1st half

1st Goal – Lance tried to clear a ball cross in from IMFC’s left wing but only managed to deflect the ball to a totally unmarked striker. The striker swings a volley and created the opening goal of the game.

2nd Goal – A header intending to catch Keeper Ariff offside did not make its way in but hit the post deflected into another unmarked striker. This however definitely looks like an offside player who took the ball and had an easy finish.

3rd Goal – Keeper Ariff was given a yellow card for shouting, ‘Let Go’ or at least claimed to be heard by the referee. A free kick was awarded to the opponent just outside the penalty which found its way into the goal with a shot from an unseemingly big gap in the wall.

4th Goal – A poor clearing from the defence line caused the ball to be deflected to IMFC’s striker who strikes the ball with vengeance. The ball was driven with such force that the keeper was not given a chance to react.

2nd half

5th Goal – A deep corner was swept into the penalty box and finally connected with IMFC’s Striker. An uncontested header gave him ample time to choose a spot in the net to send in.

6th Goal – A shot driven in after plenty of dribbling with passing was done. Keeper’s view was blocked by the big defender which eventually led to the ball making its way into the net.

7th Goal – IMFC’s striker try his luck to take a shot but was parried away by the keeper. The ball however landed in front of an offside striker who steals an easy tap in.

8th Goal – A free kick was taken quickly while everyone was still snoozing around. A shot-cross was sent in just below the goal top pole. Keeper JianHui tried to push the ball over the line but his reaction only allows him to slightly touch the ball, tipping it into the goal post.

9th Goal – The left winger of IMFC dribbled his way into the penalty box and finally sneaked past the left back, eventually slots the ball into his striker partner to slot in the last goal. A gentle tap ends the game at 9-0.

The only moment of the game for AS23 FC was a set up play from the midfield right wing. 7 passes was made before the ball was moved from the right to the left side. A low cross was sent in deep to the far post meeting up with Weixian the right back. A diving header was not accurate enough to send the ball into the net though.

What we say:
The team had a long break and everyone was rusty. However that wasn't too good an excuse to give for such a loss. I will break them down into notes. Hopefully we can improve from here. The comments were given in my point of view and generally view in an overall view. We have a few more games to lose to gain those experience so be prepared though.

There was not enough energy in the game and simple passes was not done.
Players were not chasing for balls and even if there was, it was not done in a coordinated manner.
Defence was not calm enough to hold down the play and was slightly over worked due to the collaspe of the midfield.
There was no flow in the play. Balls were moving up and down with players trying to chase for it but no passes were made from right to left or left to right. This will tire our own player plenty.
Keeper's Goal kick did not make it too far and mid fielders did not come back closer to collect the ball.
Players were too 'gentle' for their own good. Tackles were not hard enough.
Supports were not given when our own player were having the ball. We need to run to spaces to receive the ball and load from our player, if not eventually the ball will get stolen.
There are plenty more other minor things we need to work together and improve the chemistry as we play.
