Per Wikipedia, "Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata."

Boiled down, it's the "Email This" or "Share This" option you see on a lot of online news stories these days. I've you've ever e-mailed a friend or a collegue a story, you've committed social bookmarking.

But we can't all spend our days "E-Mail(ing) this" to our friends and family in hopes of raising your site traffic. What you can do, is become part of the myriad social bookmarking sites which include:

Digg (http://www.digg.com)
Reddit (http://www.reddit.com)
StumbleUpon (http://www.stumbleupon.com)
Del.icio.us (http://www.del.icio.us.com)
Furl (http://www.furl.com)

The MCS allows editors to get feedback from some of the most respected editors working in b2b journalism today, and benefit from their colleague-to-colleague analysis of what's working and what can be improved.
Not all magazines - especially smaller ones - can afford a full-blown revamp. The MCS provides objective, outside analyses that can show the decision makers in an organization how to take content to the next level. Magazines participating in the MCS will have three reviewers give detailed feedback on specific editorial and design aspects of the publication. TABPI and ASBPE will provide a report to the editor, who can thoroughly review the results with the editorial and design staff.

How the MCS works

You submit two recent issues of your publication. A team of editors and designers examine them. Two editors and one designer review each submission, so you'll get a variety of opinions.

You receive a report with detailed feedback on specific editorial and design aspects of your publication. Carefully reviewing the MCS report with your entire staff allows your publication to brainstorm over what's working and what needs improvement.

All submissions for the MCS must be received on or about October 1st, 2008. The average processing time will be 8-10 weeks from the time materials are received. Chevy’s Gold Medal Moments is the big one that jumps to mind.

But I wonder if this sort of pandering to potential advertisers—and by pandering, I mean creating vehicles for them to sponsor based on their needs and not the needs of the audience—is as obvious to the average Joe as it is to an editor who has had to create something that doesn’t necessarily further the mission of the magazine but instead brings in some extra dollars.

And if it is getting to be as obvious to the public at large, will there be a public outcry for change. I can’t be the only person who’s annoyed by the constant disruption during sporting events for this or that being brought to you by some company.

But back to my original point: does what you see in the mainstream media, both print and online, make you feel any better about the position many B2B editors fall into, with having to create sponsorship opportunities for advertisers that might not necessarily be in the best interest of the readers?

Romenesko posted this memo on his Web site from the editor of the Chicago Tribune to Trib employees about the paper's upcoming redesign--which will take place in a 90-day time period.

Here's what the timeline includes: "We are committed to determining the basic architecture and sectioning of the paper within 30 days; deciding on paging (how many and where) within 45 days; understanding our staffing levels throughout the paper in 60 days; and being ready to launch a rethought and redesigned Tribune within 90 days in mid-September."

I'm curious what people think a good timeline is for the redesign of a product, in order to ensure that the quality is top notch and the thinking behind the changes are sound.

The gist of the article was that editors are having to take an active role in the money-making part of the business instead of just the content-producing side of things and how it's a difficult cultural leap.

And it is. Many of us went to journalism schools in which the separation between editorial content and sales was a line that was drawn with blood and shall never be crossed. And that's true. Editorial is not in the business of selling ads, but there is no reason it should not be in the business of better educating its sales team on the value proposition of the product they are selling. Nor should it mean that editors and salespeople shouldn't brainstorm on ideas that might be beneficial to both advertisers and readers. The line is still there — a reader should easily be able to distinguish content that is editorially driven without advertiser input and ads or advertorials.

Which brings me to two semi-related items: Both Paste magazine and Bon Appetit recently tried two new ads out that seem to be straddling that line. In Bon Appetit's case, Starbucks purchased the masthead in the May issue, and alongside the masthead's names were quotes from that person about Starbucks products. The page was labeled promotion and was made to look like a Starbucks chalkboard.

The second is Paste magazine, which ran BMW ads down at the bottom next to the page number, in the place where normally a magazine's folio information would go. The ads featured a BMW and a fact that coincided with the page number that ad ran (i.e, on page 32: "Inches of legroom in the rear of the all-new BMW 1 Series Coupe.").

I wonder how comfortable any of you would be if approached by an advertiser to run this type of promotion or how you feel about working with your sales staff.

The ASBPE blogs were one outlet; digital freelance projects were another.

When I started walking into editorial meetings I wouldn't just think about the head and deck, I would also imagine the online possibilities. My boss could see I was really eager to do more in the digital forum but unfortunately my workload and my job responsibilities couldn't sustain that of a digital managing editor.

So I shopped my resume around to different publishers. I wasn't blatant about it and often would send my resume to see if I might be wait-listed for any future digital positions.

And then one of the companies I sent my resume to called me back.

After what felt like a dozen interviews later, I bid adieu to my print job and started fresh as a digital editor for a smaller B2B publisher.

My first couple of weeks felt like a hazing ritual deemed appropriate for print-to-digital editors -- Please post this with proper coding and image sourcing. I knew how to do it but I was a little rusty with my HTML.

Once I started coming into meetings with online ideas that my bosses and bosses' bosses liked, I felt like I'd made a good decision to move to digital. I even remembered how to code and finally started to feel like I was on top of things again. This transition -- from a print role to a digital role -- has prompted me to think of what skills I've found most beneficial. I'm sharing them with anyone who's considering making a similar move:

Be passionate about digital media. Anyone can critique a website; it's how you consider the possibilities for changing it that will help you past muster in the interview chair.

Learn enough HTML to be a little dangerous. I'm not talking programming an entire site yourself, but at least know what an "a href=" tag means and what you can do with it.

Be a part of at least one social networking site. I've jumped on the bandwagon of Facebook and LinkedIn. I've caught up with old friends on both and have helped some folks get interviews just by clicking "accept" to an invitation. The fact of the matter is if you can't see the relevance in online social networking, then you're not likely to do well in the digital foray.

Load up on your digital projects. If you're trying to turn a print job into a digital one but are not sure where to get digital experience, start small on on free projects. Offer to be the blog keeper or webmaster for your hobbyist group's blog or for your local ASBPE chapter.

Get an RSS feed for as many web-improvement sites and blogs as you can stand. For me, I subscribe to The Blog Herald, Copyblogger, ProBlogger, just to name a few. While the content is repetitve at times, you'll get a gem of a post on SEO or analytics that will change the way you look at incoming web traffic.

These are just a few of the things I did but many who have walked the road ahead of me can probably offer even better ideas. Please post your suggestions in the comments below.

Not at all, having been in this busy upwards of 10 years. What shocked me most is that a lot of the posts could have been written by the same person, as so many of them are similar. There's a lot of anger about the amount of work having to be done and the lack of resources in which to do it. There's also a lot of anger about the fact that the fate of their jobs rests on the people in positions higher than theirs, and many view those higher ups to be incompetent.

What's also interesting was something raised in the E&P article: There still seems to be a disconnect between the roles of the new media department and the editorial staffs, as evidenced by this comment: "The reporters don’t understand the Internet department and the Internet department doesn’t understand reporters. The worst part -- some of them aren’t even trying. These debates are important; no one has the answers yet. Let’s recognize that. Let’s be frank about that. Let’s talk honestly with our newsroom about the pressures of the online media landscape."

Thoughts on how we can bridge this gap?

Web 2.0 offers a lot of interesting tools, I agree, but just because those tools are available doesn't mean they are right for every B2B audience. Instead, it's more valuable to evaluate the tools available and choose the ones your audience will find useful because the value proposition will be higher, for both your readers and your advertisers.

To that end, I found this article "Leading by (Simply) Listening" on TalentZoo to be interesting. The writer is a marketer, true, but I think many in an editorial role are wearing a marketing hat, nowadays, and her point mimics mine (maybe that's why I found it interesting). To quote the writer: "Because the true value proposition of social media for companies is that it gives them the ability to identify new markets, new opportunities, potential risks and needed improvements."

I'm interested in how many of you might have done research into how to choose which Web 2.0 tools fit your audience best and what criteria you used to do so.

I think he has every right to be, as should we all. And to that end, he's been writing a three-part entry, called "Fighting Hole Tactics" on his blog, paulconley, about how editors need to "build some fighting holes--defensive positions from where they could ride out the coming onslaught of bad economic news."

And I wholeheartedly agree with him on that. As many of us who rode the wave of layoffs in the late '90s, early 2000s know, when the going get tough in the industry, the ones who tend to survive are the ones willing to take on additional responsibilities and transition to whatever comes next.

The crux of what he wrote--on which I'm interested in hearing other views on--is this: Whose responsibility is it to ensure that journalists are trained for the transition to the Web? In Paul's blog, he urges employers to not offer training for journalism on the Web because 1) you cannot train someone to be part of a culture and 2) when the fighting begins, the training must end.

I have some pretty strong thoughts on this subject, but I thought maybe others would want to jump in and comment first.
