Bollywood celebrates Asin's birthday

Asin Thottumkal, who turns 28 today brought in her birthday with a grand bash on Friday (October 25), which saw the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, husband Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Prabhu Deva, Madhavan and Akshay Kumar.

The actress, who has a reputation in South Indian Cinema, was shooting for Umesh Shukla's upcoming Hindi film 'Mere Apne' in Bangkok along with Abhishek Bachchan and was initially not willing to cancel the schedule for her birthday. But as soon as producer Bhushan Kumar got to know about her birthday, he decided to wrap up the shoot one day early so that she could be back in Mumbai in time for her big day.

As you see in pics here, birthday girl Asin looked fabulous in a red-hot lace number with matching peep-toes.

Asin Thottumkal, originally from Kerala and now settled in Mumbai, who made Bollywood debut with Ghajini, has tasted success in Bollywood while she is still among the most wanted stars in South Indian films.

The Kerala-gifted Bollywood star has not signed any new film, in past few months, post Khiladi 786, which has been declared a hit.

There were rumours that the actress has tied the knot with a US-based businessman. Reports also said that continuing acting post marriage didn’t seem possible as she may be settling in the US. Asin denied the rumours saying that she had no plans to get married so soon.

While the speculations are on about Asin being busy with the plans of settling down leaving her hot career track behind, people close to her deny the same. A source close to actress revealed, "Asin may be in love, but she will not tie the knot anytime soon since she wants to do more movies. But she is particular that she should do only roles with substance."

Asin Thottumkal has been associated with super hit movies like Ghajini, Bol Bachchan, Housefull 2, Khiladi 786 and Ready. Out of six films in her Bollywood career, the only film that has flopped for the actress was a multi-starrer, London Dreams.

Close to the end of 2012, the actress had shared her plans to go on a break post the Akshay Kumar-starrer Khiladi 786. "I have been working back-to-back, and I feel I need to slow down and really take a break before taking on any new films. Even then I will only be doing really selective work now. I won’t compromise on quality at all," Asin had said earlier. She also took off for a long holiday to the US presumably with friends.

Bollywood has given her much more than she ever could dream of, but then why is not actress showing any interest lately in signing up any offers? That has been a BIG question!

And, now Asin clears the air about all the rumours as she says, "I feel there is a lot more to me than what Bollywood has seen so far. I find it funny when they say that I’m a lucky mascot and part of the Rs 100-crore club. That does not define me. I got time to sit and introspect when I took this backpacking trip with my school friends in the US. Now that I have the numbers, I want to take up roles where I get to act."

The latest buzz is also that the actress has signed a big film in Kollywood. However, there is no confirmation from the gorgeous Mallu woman about the same.

Asin Thottumkal, the most beloved actress of the South, who also manages to be part of hit films in Bollywood, celebrates her birthday today (26-Oct-2011). Let us wish this lovely lass a very happy birthday.

Birthday girl, Kerala born multilingual actress Asin has gifted herself a three-bedroom, 6,000 square-feet plush apartment on Marine Drive in Kochi today. It's her third apartment in Kochi, besides that she already has two plush apartments in Mumbai.

"It's a beautiful apartment, overlooking the lake. It also gives a glimpse of small ships that come there. You can spend hours sitting on the sun deck," says Asin adding, "It's been a good year for me, so I thought why not gift an apartment to myself. And that's what I've done."

Asin has had a good year with Ready, her film with actress Salman Khan breaking box-office records. Right now, it's her house that's taken all her attention. According to the actress, it may take her another month or so to move into her new house as the interiors of herhouse are yet to be done.

"I will be leaving soon to shoot for Housefull 2, and won't be around when the apartment will be ready. So, I guess, it will be some time before I get to move into my house," says Asin.

The actress says that though she has not planned any party yet, she is confident of a 'surprise' in store for her. "Last year, I had my closest friends drop by on my birthday. I am sure something will happen this birthday as well," says the vivacious actress.

Undoubtedly, she is mighty excited about how the day unfolds.

"I am really lucky to have such beautiful and loving friends," she says and adds, "My parents are known for giving me pleasant surprises every birthday. I can smell this year too they are planning something".

Turning a year older today (i.e. 26) the actress maintains a carefree attitude about her age and said to sources that she has no qualms over talking about it.

So what did the actress get for her birthday from her parents? The actress says that since her birthday this year falls on Diwali, she got a combined gift for Dhanteras and her birthday as well. "I got a lovely diamond jewellery set from my mom. It's quite chic and I will be wearing it soon," she says.

"Ask me", laughs Asin, "I am now really waiting for something that truly manages to surprise me. My parents have been doing all to make me happy. They know how much I chill out when it comes to this day. However, looks like they would have to get some more tricks up their sleeves to surprise me. I end up getting to know pretty much well in advance about everything that they plan."

Back in 2008, the unit of London Dreams had invited her for a wrap up party before she left London and the actress was overwhelmed to find that it was a surprise birthday party that Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan had arranged for her.

Well, this year she can actually expect something really fantastic coming her way. Last year, her friends from overseas have paid her a visit, Asin is eagerly waiting to see how her next few hours unfold.

Now the actress is currently busy with Rohit Shetty's Bol Bachchan in which she shares screen space with Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan and Sajid Khan's Housefull 2 co-starring Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Zarine Khan.

Her pretty face is all smiles when Asin reminisces about her Onams in Kochi. On Onam, the Kerala born Indian actress takes a trip down memory lane.

The effervescent Asin Thottumkal, who hails from a Catholic family in Kerala, has three festivals marked out on her calendar each year. One is Onam, and the other two are Christmas and New Year.

Onam (Malayalam: ഓണം) is a fesitival celebrated by the people of Kerala, India. It falls during the month of Chingam (August–September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary Emperor Mahabali. The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements of Kerala's culture and tradition. Intricate flower carpets, elaborate banquet lunch, snake boat races, Puli Kali, and the Kaikottikkali dance all play a part in the festival.

"I have had colourful Onams with grand celebrations," she says, adding nostalgically, "Home was the centre of festivities with Athapoo, Thiruvathira kali, oonjal [swing], my favourite being the king of sweets – ada pradhaman – and a full-scale sadhya."

Asin Thottumkal is an actress who does not generally take off on extended holidays.

"We really celebrated Onam in a big way and that is why I miss it even more. It gets difficult to celebrate festivals when you have a packed shooting schedule. Even this time, the chances of spending the day with my family seemed bleak as I'm stationed in Rajasthan till October, but fortunately I managed to get two days off around Onam. So I flew down to Mumbai on Tiruonam (main festival) today to spend the day with my parents. My mom will be cooking up a feast and I’m looking forward to polishing it all off," smiles the Mallu beauty.

Genelia walks out of next Asin film

Asin and Genelia have a lot in common nowadays. They both managed to do very well for themselves in the South Indian film industries and then set out to conquer Bollywood.

SINGHAM director Rohith Shetty's next film Bol Bachchan was expected to star Genelia and Asin in the female lead roles. Early reports claimed the starlets will be romancing Abhishek Bachchan and Ajay Devgn in this movie.

Sources confirm that Asin has been roped in to play Ajay Devgn's love interest in Rohit Shetty's next, Bol Bachchan. The Ghajini star has worked with Ajay in London Dreams.

Genelia D'souza has reportedly decided to opt out of the film for reasons best known to her. However, when asked why the actress opted out, a source close to the developments said, "When she read the script, Genelia felt that she didn't have a very significant role in the film. But that is with most of Shetty's films - either they are too crowded or they are male-centric."

"For Genelia, this could have been a big ticket into a big Bollywood commercial film," the source added.

However, a friend of the actress came to her defence and denied these claims. "Her dates are clashing with Navdeep Singh's film, starring Abhay Deol. She had to chose one between the two," said the actress's friend.

Ready is second to Dabangg

Salman Khan's 'Ready' starts on an expected high note crossing a weekend gross of Rs 40.5 crore though it remains second to 'Dabangg'.

Every new big release in Bollywood is raising the bar of the opening weekend collections.

Last year it was his rural action-drama 'Dabangg' that broke the dry spell at the box office by earning Rs.48.25 crore in the opening weekend, and this year Salman Khan's comedy 'Ready' has brought the much needed respite at the box office by grossing Rs.41 crore over the weekend.

Trade pundits, however, admit that 'Ready' is not on par with 'Dabangg' in terms of content and appeal and many not enjoy a long innings at the box office, but it is an entertaining film and got a good opening.

The weekend break up is as follows (figures in net)

Friday Rs 131.5 million (Rs 13.15 crore)

Saturday Rs 122.5 million (Rs 12.25 crore)

Sunday Rs 152.5 million (Rs 15.25 crore) highest figures across India.

Ready, a romantic comedy with a musical backdrop, is a remake of a 2008 Telugu film of the same name headlining Ram and Genelia D'Souza. The Telugu film was also remade in Tamil with Dhanush and Genelia in lead roles as 'Uthama Puthiran'.

'Ready' is produced by T-Series and directed by Anees Bazmee. The film has Arya Babbar, Paresh Rawal, Mahesh Manjrekar, Akhilendra Mishra, Puneet Issarm, Manoj Joshi and Sudesh Lehri in supporting roles.

The Telugu original of the film celebrated a 100- day run in Andhra Pradesh and turned out to be one of the biggest grossers in the US too.

The Hindi film, Salman-Asin starrer READY opened huge on Friday (03-June-2011) and though the media reviews were mixed with most of them falling in the 'below average' category, audience reaction was just the opposite with reports being above average to excellent.

Salman Khan's magic seems to have worked again. Ready has not only become the second biggest opener, it is also weaving magic overseas.

For all of you who had great expectations from Salman Khan after Wanted and Dabangg, Ready does not disappoint. The movie has all the elements of a typical Bollywood masala film – songs, goons, chases and fights.

Rediff Review

After two films, Dabangg and Wanted, both of which were successful at the box-office Salman Khan returns in Anees Bazmee's Ready. Since Dabangg was the top grosser of the year, or possibly even the decade, the hangover was bound to linger for a couple of years.

Asin is the surprise element and is totally convincing as the 'runaway bride' despite a small role. She shares good chemistry with Salman and manages to evoke laughter with her crazy antics.

Post-interval Salman gets into action mode, a persona his fans can't get enough of. He fights goons, breaks tables and rescues his lady love from evil gangsters without even breaking into a sweat.

Ready is a vehicle which showcases the 'Best of Salman' one has seen over the last twenty years.

DNA Review

After enthralling audiences as Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg, Salman Khan is back in Ready as Prem Kapoor, a brattish chiraag of a Hum Apke Hain Kaun style khaandaan.

Bazmee gives you a crash course in all popular characters that Sallu has so far played. But he doesn't let you down on the count of sheer stupidity like wind that blows away a heap of fruit or a braking car sending someone soaring 100 feet in the air.

Ready is mindless but entertaining in parts. Expectations from the film were high considering the last film that featured the star was a blockbuster. Ready isn't a patch on Salman’s Wanted or Dabangg in terms of entertainment value. For Bazmee however, Ready is a vast improvement since his last film Thank You.

If you're a Sallu fan, you won’t feel let down.

TOI Review

Remade from the 2008 Telugu film Ready (Genelia D'Souza, Ram), the screenplay is adapted in fast-food format with cliched conflicts and so many characters that you lose count after a point of time.

Understanding the character correlations is a task that could even baffle the Barjatyas. The director keeps his task simple by sticking to his brand of loud comedy, over-the-top acts, caricatured characters and silly slapstick.

The entire villain tribe is unusually unkempt and intentionally irritating. The sidetrack of the pampered spoilt grandson (Mohit Baghel) being subjugated by Salman's buffoonery is annoying. Sajid-Farhad's dialogues don't elevate the humour much and when Salman expresses romance with lines like 'main kutta hoon, yeh kutiya hain', you know the film is going to the dogs. The music is inspired and the action has impact though thankfully not overdone.

Filmfare Review

Here’s the thing. When it comes to a Salman Khan or a Rajnikant film, their performance is not important. It’s the audience performance that counts. And the audience delivers every time.

With applause and excitement. It doesn’t matter how Ready is critiqued, dissected, trashed or praised in the hallowed portals of India’s review and critic world, the verdict is already out. Salman’s in his own private Toyland and you are all invited to play.

Asin, the leading lady manages to hold her on in the middle of this Salman festival and hats off to her for that.

No matter what anyone tells you, this is a movie you will watch. And you will laugh. And you will wait for Salman’s next blockbuster. And if anyone can show you how it’s done, this particular brand of cinema that we so abundantly celebrate, it’s Salman. You happy, box office happy, everyone happy. That’s that then.

NDTV Review

Ready should have just been called: Salman Khan.

The film is essentially a one-man show by an actor, who doesn’t act.

Instead, he plays himself with aplomb – a charming rockstar who can, without much sweat, win the girl, beat-up the bad guy, reconcile warring relations and of course, bare his chiseled chest.

The film is a remake of a Telugu blockbuster and it comes with loud but infectious songs with titles such as Dhinka Chika and Character Dheela. Obviously class, wit, craft, continuity have little significance here.

Malayali beauty Asin Thottumkal, the Ghajini star, has recently helped her maid with Rs 4 lakh to buy a house for herself.

Elaborating about the large-heartedness of Asin, a source close to the actress said, "Asin's maid who has been working for her since four to five years wanted to buy a house in Goregaon and the actress had promised her all the help she could, including money. And that she did, giving her as much as four lakh rupees!"

"My 'memsaab' is very kind hearted. She not only pays me well but helps me with money whenever I need it for my household expenses or children's medical aid," says the happy maid.

Giving expression to her humanitarian side, southern actress Asin Thottumkal, back in 2010, had decided to fund the education of Radhika, an eight-year-old orphan girl from Kerala.

"I have been working for children's education and child rights for a long time and yes, it is true that I have taken over the entire education cost of this eight-year-old," Asin said in a statement.

The 25-year-old multilingual actress will financially support the child right up to her college.

"Not just her, I have been looking at taking care of many other children. I have plans of expanding my boundaries and help as many people as possible," the charming starlet said.

For Asin, charity is a regular, she says, "I keep helping the poor and the needy as and when I can, and that is not a big deal. I do not like to discuss this as I don't do it for publicity."

On the professional front, the actress will have her film with Salman - READY hit the screens coming 03-June-2011. Asin is going to be off to London, for the filming of her next film Housefull 2 shortly.

Kerala born multilingual Indian film actress Asin Thottumkal, who will be seen opposite Salman Khan in her forthcoming film READY, is all praise for the actor who she says is very straight-forward and can never indulge in double standards.

Asin has earlier worked with Salman Khan in London Dreams, followed by Ready and both the times, the bubbly mallu girl couldn't help but get charmed by the Khan.

If gossip-mongers in B-town are to be believed then Khan has gifted Asin a puppy and a flat, but the actress denies receiving any such presents.

"The rumours doing rounds about Salman gifting me anything is totally absurd. I love pet animals but I don't have any. And about the flat, I found the report silly as I am staying in the same flat where I moved during Ghajini," she said.

Talking about her experience of working with Bollywood's hottest hunk, Asin says, "Working with Salman is fun. We share a great bond and comfort level and therefore even work becomes pleasure."

She is the leading lady in 'Ready' but actress Asin Thottumkal says she has no problems with Salman Khan hogging the limelight in the film's promotions.

"When a film stars Salman Khan, it is but natural that the script is written to accentuate his presence in the film. It is also logical to have the film revolve around him. The same has to reflect in the promos as well where his style and mannerisms are exposed to the audience," Asin says.

During the making of Ready, Asin was constantly overwhelmed by Salman’s kind nature. “He extends so much help to new talent. I’ve seen youngsters come to him for advice with their portfolios almost every day. He takes them under his wing if he believes in their talent,” says Asin, adding, "He is chilled out and not insecure despite all the hype and euphoria surrounding him. I love his straight-faced humour."

Asin, who is alleged to be having a hook-up with the B-town's most eligible bachelor Salman Khan, seems to have observed the hunk quite closely.

Salman is considered the 'bad boy' of Bollywood, but Asin says, "I personally never experienced his notorious side. He is very pure from his heart and direct with people."

"He never speaks one thing on the face and other on your back," says Asin about Salman Khan. He is something special and I would love to act with him again and again, she adds.

Directed by Anees Bazmee, Ready is all set to release on June 3.

Anees Bazmee’s Ready, which has been shot in several locations including Thailand and Colombo, has Salman Khan and Asin Thottumkal in lead roles.

The movie went on the floors in December last year and is slated for release on June 3, a record for a Salman Khan film.

Salman Khan is full of praises for his co-star Asin. With their upcoming film “Ready” all set for June 2011 release, Salman has gone a step further and compared Asin to Madhuri Dixit.

The Dabangg actor said, "It’s a family entertainer, and there’s everything good about the movie, including an ideal woman just like Madhuri in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. In ‘Ready’ it’s Asin."

The duo had earlier worked together in London Dreams and is presently working together in Ready. Their chemistry has reportedly come out very well on-screen according to the director and the unit.

Ready is only two months away from release but it is definitely one of the most awaited films of 2011. After all, it brings the hit combination of Salman Khan and Anees Bazmee, years after No Entry.

Also, it would be the third Bollywood outing for Asin who waited to sign a new film after Ghajini and London Dreams.

However, the lady in question found herself in the news for all the wrong reasons, after a rumour hit headlines across the web. As per this, Asin has a steamy scene with Salman in the film and has finally let go off her imagination. The fact though is that this is far away from being true.

Reports have been making the rounds in some section of the media that Asin will be donning a bikini in Housefull and doing a steamy kissing scene with Salman in Ready. Completely miffed by such false news Asin chose to react and clear the air.

The multi-lingual actress said, "I am amused by these rumors which I noticed on the internet and some people have copied it to their newspapers. I am glad people who know me do not believe in such trash. There are no steamy scenes or kiss in ‘Ready’. It is a family entertainer for God’s sake! And sorry to disappoint you, the bikini news is someone’s fertile imagination and not the truth."

Ready is hitting the screens on June 3. The soft-spoken Asin explains that though the story is very much the same (of the Telugu original), it has been adapted to suit the northern audiences, their family system, their character portrayal but there is no steamy scenes like the media had portrayed and is a completely family rom-com.

News about Salman- Asin marriage had been the highlight topic of Bollywood, by the end of last year (2010). Reports even claimed that Asin's parents tried to dissuade their daughter from going ahead with the marriage.

Yes, it was Asin's on-screen marriage with Salman Khan for Anees Bazmi's "Ready" that stirred quite a sensation. Asin's comment was: I'm enjoying the joke.

Knowing she'll be miffed, still one can't stop asking her that question..when is she getting married? "Oh, no..don't ask me that. My focus is on my career, in the process of working if I find the right guy I will not hesitate to reveal," she says a tad irritatedly.

Asin charmed in a classy mustard yellow lace dress at Burberry bash at Hotel Four Seasons in Mumbai. The bubbly damsel wore a sleeveless body hugging dress with ruffle detail on skirt.

The wedding was actually a scene being shot from the film ‘Ready’ in which Asin marries Salman against her parents’ wishes. However, mistakenly, some felt that she had, indeed, got married to him.

The press in the South is claiming that Asin tied the knot with Salman Khan earlier this week in the presence of close friends.

As the evidence, a photograph of Salman dressed as a dulha and Asin as his new bride was splashed in the press reports. Quite obviously, a lot of people believed it and the pretty Kerala born actress was flooded with congratulatory calls and messages.

The actress sighs deeply when responding, "At last, the rumours are coming true. Salman and I are finally married. It's a first for both of us."

Before you continue to more guesses, here comes the interesting fact behind all this... Asin can’t stop laughing because it was a shoot for her film Ready with Salman Khan. In the scene, Asin marries Salman against her parent’s wishes. Apparently, someone thought she was getting married for real and published the story which was picked up by others in the media down south. In fact, the news of Asin’s marriage even reached her native place Kerala.

She laughs, "You know, I'm quite enjoying the joke about my wedding. I've been in my bridal outfit taking the saat pheras, for a week now.

I almost feel I'm really married. The family opposition that is being talked about is also part of the script."

Asin adds that she never knew that getting married was so much fun and adventure. She says, "I've gone through Malayali, Tamil and Telugu marriages.

But this is my first Punjabi wedding. And I love it. I even danced at my sangeet to Laung Gawacha."

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Siddique directed Kaavalan was expected to release for Diwali, but the film is yet to be completed. It is likely to be a Christmas release.

The latest from the Kaavalan team is that Vijay and Asin have just returned from Lavasa, near Pune, where the song was canned recently. Lavasa is a picturesque location and is the first planned hill city in India where a Tamil film has been shot for the first time.
