Welcome to Askpedia v2.0!

Time flies. We can't believe that it has been over two years since we launched Askpedia 1.0 in July 2007.

Since then we've made tremendous progress thanks to the efforts of our user community. Our users have asked over 80,000 questions and provided over 140,000 answers. We now have over 100,000 monthly visitors to Askpedia and we continue to see steady growth, month after month.

We know this wouldn't be possible without our users, so we want to thank you all for your great contributions and dedication to making Askpedia such a vibrant community.

We also know that we can always do better and we're excited to announce the release of the new and improved Askpedia 2.0.

With this release, we've introduced new features to drive greater interactions between users and also increase recognition for great contributions from users. We've also made significant enhancements to the underlying platform to improve ease of use and performance.

So far, we've gotten lots of positive feedback, and we're glad to hear that the new features and performance improvements are working out for everyone. The new version of Askpedia was a signficant effort which required a complete overhaul of the Askpedia technology platform. It's definitely rewarding and gratifying to see that our efforts and hard work are paying off for our users.

However, we do realize that a lot of things have changed with Askpedia 2.0 and that people will require time to get used to these changes. Also, Askpedia 2.0 isn't perfect and we know we have improved some things but made other things worse. The great thing about our users is that they're not shy about telling us when something was a dumb move on our part. It definitely keeps us on our toes and it constantly reminds us that we have a high bar that's set by our users.

Although we're celebrating the launch of the new Askpedia, it doesn't mean that we're all going to take a vacation. We're currently in the process of gathering your feedback and iterating on new features and improvements to continually improve Askpedia.

Over the next few weeks, you'll see us continue to roll out enhancements and new features based on your feedback so keep an eye out for exciting new changes. Also, please continue to send us feedback on new features and changes to Askpedia!

Once again, a big Thank You to all of our users and we'll continue to do our best to make Askpedia the best online community for people to share and discover knowledge.

Yong Su Kim
CEO and Founder
Askpedia.com
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/askpediablog/~4/eCOsBsEqMPQ" height="1" width="1" />

A lot of these changes were related to improving Askpedia's performance and reliability. We've also made improvements to Askpedia so that people can discover Askpedia more easily from search engines.

All of this has resulted in steady growth for Askpedia. If you're curious about Askpedia's growth, you can check out our QuantCast profile. We're growing steadily and we're now approaching 100,000 unique visitors per month!

With this growth, we're getting a lot of new users who are asking lots of interesting questions. We're also seeing greater diversity when it comes to questions and that's a great thing since it keeps everyone engaged and entertained.

Whenever you have a large open society, it's inevitable that there will
be a few antisocial people who want to ruin things for everyone. Unfortunately, with this growth, we're also seeing a few bad apples here and there.

Whenever you see inappropriate behavior, please flag the content. Please don't feed their need for attention by confronting them. It will just goad them to engage in further antisocial behavior. We do review every flagged content and will do our best to discourage further antisocial behavior.

Lastly, we want to thank all of our users for helping us grow over the past few months. We have received many emails from people who were grateful for answers to important questions and we know many people have made new friends by sharing their knowledge on Askpedia. Askpedia could not exist without the support of all our users and we all look forward to greater things for the Askpedia community.

Yong Su Kim
CEO and Founder, Askpedia.com
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/askpediablog/~4/ZsfssGUHdlo" height="1" width="1" />

We recently rolled out some changes to question and answer rating changes and we received a lot of great feedback. Some of our users loved the changes but some of our users had more suggestions on things we needed to implement.

We listened to all of your feedback and we've been busy making some major changes to the way best answers get selected. We know it's still not perfect, but it's a big step towards a much better system for dealing with situations where the question asker does not take the time to make a best answer selection.

Starting from today, we will no longer apply an algorithm to automatically select the best answer.

If the question asker does not make a best answer selection, no best answer will be selected and nobody will receive credit for a best answer. If the question has a reward, the reward will be forfeit and collected in a community pool. We're still currently thinking of ideas of what to do with this pool of money. If you have any ideas, please send us feedback.

To encourage question askers to take the time to select a best answer, we're introducing two new features. When a question asker selects a best answer for questions with more than one answer, they will receive a small rebate in their account. Question askers will receive this rebate for all questions (but not surveys), regardless of the reward attached to the question. We're starting the rebate at $0.10 and we'll adjust this amount as necessary.

We will also display a question asker's track record of best answer selection with every question that they ask. This will be displayed in the "About this User" box displayed in the top right hand section of the question page. It will show a message such as "User selected Best Answer 100% of the time". By publicly displaying a question asker's track record for best answer selection, we hope to encourage askers to take the time to make a best answer selection. It will also allow answerers to determine the likelihood that the question asker will take the time to select a best answer.

Once again, we know that the system isn't perfect, but we know we're making important steps. We also have a number of other features that we're going to be rolling out over the next few weeks to make further improvements. In the meanwhile, if you have any suggestions, please send email to feedback@askpedia.com.

Over the past month, we received a lot of feedback on how we can improve the automatic selection of best answers. We received a lot of great feedback from many of you and we're starting to roll out some of your suggestions.

The changes that we rolled out this month were designed to improve the transparency and effectiveness of answer ratings. Here's a summary of the changes to rating answers:

Users now need to maintain a Question or Answer star rating greater than 3 stars to compliment answers

Every answer now displays the list of users who complimented the answer in the "Comments/Compliments" section

The Question ratings system has now changed so that askers who do not
take the time to select a best answer will see their question rating
drop more steeply than before. A lower Question Star rating for the
asker will now mean that they're less likely to take the time to select
a best answer than other users with higher Question Star ratings.

Lastly, we have changed the method for automatically selecting a best
answer when the asker does not make a selection. We have a new dynamic
algorithm which will now take into account several factors related to
the answer's track record, as well as the distribution of compliments
across the question's answers. Since this is a dynamic algorithm, we
will continue to tweak this algorithm to strike the right balance.

These changes are just the start of many more improvements that we will
make to Askpedia in the coming months. If you have any feedback or
ideas on other improvements, please send email to feedback@askpedia.com.

We're excited to announce that we now have an Askpedia Facebook application!

Facebook is one of the most popular and fast growing social networking
services with over 70 million users and growing at over 2 million users
per week. Now you can ask and answer questions on Askpedia without leaving
the Facebook site. It all happens within your Facebook account.

The really exciting thing about the Askpedia Facebook application is
that it's tightly integrated with all the social networking features of
Facebook. When you ask or answer questions, Facebook will update your
Friends. You can also send questions or surveys to friends with a few
clicks so it's going to open up new ways of interacting with your
Facebook friends.

To get started, login to Facebook and then add the Askpedia Facebook
application by entering the following URL into your web browser:

http://apps.facebook.com/askpedia

Once you add the Askpedia application, you can select a new username or
enter your current Askpedia username and password. If you want to use
the same username for the Askpedia website and Facebook application,
enter your current Askpedia username and password. If you want to keep
them separate, you can choose a new username that will be linked only
to your Facebook account.

Once
you've added the Askpedia Facebook application, don't forget to invite
your Facebook friends. It's really easy with the Invite Friends link
and it's also easy to send interesting questions to friends using the
"Share" button.

We're
really excited by the Askpedia Facebook application but since this is
first release, we know there's always room for improvement. If you have
suggestions or feedback, please send an email to feedback@askpedia.com.

Many of you have achieved impressive milestones and we're glad to see people recognized and rewarded for contributions.

However, we realize that we can always improve, and we've received some great ideas on improving the contest format. Starting from January, we're going to implement your suggestions by making the following changes to the contest categories:

Question with Most Answers NEW

Survey Question with Most Responses

Most Best Answers

The new category for "Question with Most Answers" will be awarded based on whoever asks a question that receives the most answers in the given month. We hope that this encourages people to ask some really interesting thought provoking questions.

In addition to the new category, we're changing the contest award format. Instead of the previous winner-takes-all format, we will now provide awards for the top 3 users in each category. The first place winner will receive $50, second place winner will receive $30, and the third place winner will receive $20.

With these changes, we hope to make the contest more interesting and also recognize and reward more people for their contributions.

If you have any other thoughts or suggestions, please send email to feedback@askpedia.com. We love to hear from you!

When I opened it I found great questions & answers and also awards for best answers which made me jump into the ocean of knowledge.

What motivates you to ask/answer questions?

First thing what motivates me is that I can get my questions answered right here from experts of different fields. I have met great experts like Dr. Richard, justthefacts, ilovegoogle, beerlover, jess, butrFlySara and many more.

Second is winning the best answers and sharing the rewards among ourselves. This motivates to give your best answers to questions.

Thirdly, I want to conduct surveys which I can do it here for minimum expense which would otherwise cost me tonnes of money.

What are some of your favorite questions/answers and topics?

What is your favorite feature on Askpedia?

Of course Surveys. This has given me a great medium to analyse data from experts from diversified fields.

How can we continue to improve Askpedia?

One thing I want to see improvement is not to award the best answer by just looking at highest rated answer if asker does not select a best answer. Once I noticed a wrong answer being automatically selected as best answer and there was no way I could point out that the answer was wrong. Also there should be some features where experts can chat or text message each other as sometimes you need to advise privately beyond Q&A from Askpedia.

Thank you to Shiv for taking the time to be the featured user thoughts with us. We agree with your suggestion about automatic selection of best answers and we'll look into ways of addressing it in an upcoming release.

We wanted to share some tips on how to provide great answers on Askpedia. We've seen a lot of answers and the really great answers seem to share many similar characteristics. Here's a summary of some of the best practices we've seen on providing great answers:

Provide an Answer based on your Personal Experience
The most effective answers contain knowledge and wisdom that you have gained from personal experience. This is typically information that isn't available on a web page and it's therefore more valuable than widely available information or conventional wisdom.

Provide Information from Trusted Sources and Identify your Sources
It's okay to use a search engine to provide information that is available on the web. Search engines provide a lot of information and if you're good at using all the advanced features to find relevant information, you can always provide a great answer. Just make sure that you cite your sources so that the asker knows the source of the information. Also, you should always credit the original source of the information if you're going to contain excerpts from other web pages.

Make your Answer Relevant and Focused
We're all busy so nobody enjoys reading through a long and winding answer to get to the relevant section. Answer the question directly in the beginning and use the rest of the space to support your answer. Providing lots of details is fine, but don't provide details for the sake of making your answer look long and official. Having a shorter, relevant and focused answer will always be much better than a long answer with irrelevant information.

Request Question Clarification
Sometimes, it's hard to answer the question if there isn't enough detail. Instead of providing an answer based on limited question details, submit a question clarification request. The asker will be notified and they'll have a chance to provide more details. You will then be notified via your Alerts log when the asker provides additional question details.

Make your Answer Easy to Read
Last but not least, it's important to format your answer properly so that it's easy to read. You should try to write in sentences with correct grammar and punctuation. Also, try to break your
answer into shorter paragraphs. A single long paragraph can be hard to
read through, especially when there are multiple answers for a question.

We wanted to take the time to feature another person from our many active users.

Dr. Richard is a retired dentist who resides in Blackwell, Oklahoma. He is one of our most active question answerers who has answered questions on a wide variety of topics ranging from medical questions to food and education. He's racked up an impressive 647 answers since joining us in July, 2007. He has also asked 167 questions on top of all of his answering activity.

Tell us a little about yourself

I am a dentist, who after many years of
successful practice, retired due to losing a lot of my vision.
Because of technology, I can do this and I enjoy helping people from
a rather conservative and traditional viewpoint.

How did you find out about Askpedia?

I had a
telephone/modem problem, so I asked for help on Yahoo! Answers.
Apologizing for being unsolicited, an email invited me here. In
Askpedia, you don't get the silly answers you do there, so there is a
need. Noting the failure of Google Answers, the start of Live QnA,
this site needs building.

What are your favorite questions/answers on Askpedia?

My favorite answers are where I can't make
a program do something, and the good people of Askpedia tell me,
“you can't do that with that program, here's one that will do what
you want”. You can tell from my questions that the big thing in my life is my new grandson.

How can we continue to improve Askpedia?

Suggestions? A casual reader may come
to an incorrect conclusion about group ask. I wish you would make it
clearer. A green rating from site advisor might help. But the most
important thing is to do something about thumbs down. An asker can
be warned about an incorrect answer with a comment. Thumbs up should
provide enough variation to select the best both for the asker and
the automatic selection. Percent best answer of resolved
questions could be shown, instead of percent best of total total
answers. Answering questions should be a positive experience and not
being selected as best answer is a stimulus to provide better answers
next time.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. We agree with your suggestion about thumbs up/down and we've already implemented the change on our website. We'll work on incorporating your other suggestions into upcoming releases.

Also,
if you have a user that you would like to nominate to be featured,
please send us email. You can also send us questions that you would
like to ask our featured users. Please send all email to feedback@askpedia.com.
