The Features That You Want and More

I recently installed Crashplan for online backup of my main computer. I opted to get a hard drive from them to upload my files quickly since the slow (for all online backup programs) transfer over the web would not take months to complete but rather the bulk of my data would be on the hard drive and Crashplan could bring me up to speed quickly and all I would have to backup would be files that changed since the initial seeding.

Things went basically pretty smoothly after some help from Crashplan tech support and I sent the hard drive back to them and set the program to backup to them over the web.

Suddenly on the day that I switched online, I was speaking to my daughter on the phone and she said that my voice was dropping out and she could not understand what I was saying. There were gaps in the speech of anyone using my phone lines. I immediately called Ooma and asked them what had happened to my phone service. They said to check my Internet service. I did an lo and behold it was terrible! I immediately switched my focus to Verizon Fios support.

I checked with speednet.com and found that instead of getting 10 mbps (megabits per second) download and 2 mbps upload I was getting .5 mbps download and .3 upload. The Internet speed was shot to kazoo. I did a ping test and found that the ping delay and jitter were terrible. I called Fios support and they tried to repair the problem 3 times online and each time right after their repair it looked like it worked but very shortly thereafter it went south. I had a technician come down and he replaced my ONT outside box and my modem/router but it didn’t help. I had scheduled a technician to come yet again but I didn’t hold out much hope.

The Solution

I then had a brainstorm. The rule in degugging technical p0roblems is that the most recent change in your system probably caused the problem. I realized that I had now turned Crashplan on full speed and maybe it was eating up my Internet c9nnection. I changed it from being always on to only being turned on between 11 pm and 12 am. Eureka. My Fios was back. The speed was back and the slow pings and jitter were gone. I had my phone service back and all was well with the world.

Ways To Avoid The Problem

Since the problem is that Crashplan was eating too much bandwidth, the way to solve this problem is to reduce its impact. The impact is greatest when Crashplan is first uploading all your files to their storage area. Once this is done either by long term online backup or by loading up a hard drive so the files are there quickly.

Here are the ways to prevent problems:

• Once the main files have been uploaded, the online backup impact should be minimal. However, if you want, you can limit the time that the backup is running to after phone hours.
• You can set the bandwidth use  to a low number so that the backup is slower but had less impact.
• In the case of Ooma, the ideal set up is to place the Ooma box in between the modem from the Internet provider and the router. This way the phone manages its own QOS (quality of service) before anything interferes with it. With Verizon providing an integrated modem and router in one box, so this would need a trick called port forwarding to get this accomplished.

All in all, your online backup, Internet service and Internet phone can all live together peacefully. You just need to be aware of the issues.

Doing a local backup to an external drive provides a second source for your stuff. Online backup provides you with an offsite home for your data for another level of protection. It can additionally provide for a very up to date backup because it can always be running whereas a local backup is generally only run from time to time.

Does it upload new and changed files immediately? Does it allow syncing or sharing of data? Can it back up files while you have them open? Is there a Web client for restoring? Is there a mobile client? A Mac client? For some, the most important question is “How much will it cost?” In the next section, we’ll offer guidelines to just that.

Archiving

When you backup you save the current versions of your files. If you do some sort of incremental backup, you may have multiple versions of your files such as documents that are being changed over time. Many online services don’t offer archiving, some offer limited archiving and others like Crashplan offer unlimited archiving.

This feature allows you to go back to an old version of a file that has important information that you no longer have in your most recent files.

Archiving, however, has its costs. It takes extra room and if you’ve paid for a limited amount of space, you may run out of it sooner than you expect. Check out the archiving policy of the vendors that you consider to see if they fit with your needs.

External disk of your data available in case of emergency

I would only use online backup as a second level backup. However, if it ever turned out that your local backup was destroyed and your system needs to be recovered, the online backup company should provide you with an external drive of your data for a fast restore. Restoring online only could take a very long time, on the order of weeks.

What should you back up

The easiest thing to back up is everything. However, it may be expensive because it will take much more space and it might also be useless since the system data may not be saved in a form that’s recoverable. If you’re up to it, you should make a careful assessment of what you want to back up and identify it to the backup program.

Bare metal restore which can recover a totally destroyed system is an up and coming feature of the latest online backup programs.

My Personal Choice

After review of a number of programs, I narrowed my choice to CrashPlan, iDrive,  and Pc Magazine’s favorite, SOS Backup for my 500 gb system. I wanted disk seeding, unlimited backup at a reasonable price and minimal problems. iDrive didn’t offer seeding for a single user and their iBackup costs were too high. SOS Backup was way more expensive than the other 2 and was not a choice. Crashplan provided everything I needed for a reasonable price and this is the program which I am going to use.

One final note. Please read the user reviews and search the Internet for <program name> complaints to see about the problems that programs might have that the reviewers don’t tell you about.

There are no obvious bots in the design of RTBot. By the name RTBot, they probably mean that the searches are real time and automated like a robot.

The return is almost instantaneous but it is not perfect. It sometimes goes way off target in some of  the results. It can help to complete research quickly but some work many be needed to fill in some of the gaps. The information is not necessarily timely and they probably should allow for some date of data input.One could do all these queries manually, but it would take a bit of effort.

Minter Dial has done a review of the site and he was not happy with it. He has some very insightful comments which are worth reviewing. His comments about branding are of particular interest.

However, unless he is suggesting the email contact from RTBot, I don’t see anything spammy about it. The email wasn’t in the very best English but it was not that bad. Except for the videos which are provided under the RTBot URL, I didn’t find that any other data was “trapped” in that way.

All in all, I found it to be good for a lazy person’s way of getting data about a topic and if people use it and offer suggestions, it can be improved over time.
