The flight has been booked and I will be back in Ho Chi Minh in the first half of July. This will not be a personal vacation but a mission trip. I was invited to be a camp speaker at an over night summer youth camp organized by co-laborers in that country and I’ll be traveling with other team members to help with teaching youth, English training and providing drama and theater arts workshops to young people there. I’m preparing myself and the whole team of short term missionaries for things like sleeping on a day bed mattress in the camp and not on the comfort of an air-conditioned hotel room. There is also the possibility of getting the camp program disrupted since gospel sharing is not allowed in Vietnam but we are praying for God’s protection and provision for this trip. I need to raise at least $600 for this missions trip which is set to begin this week.

Yesterday, we celebrated the 9th anniversary of our church in Makati. We held our first ever church service there on May 25, 2003 after signing a 5-year contract and having the whole third floor tiled. Our celebration yesterday was very special because it was our last anniversary celebration at the Kalayaan Talipapa building (there is a wet market on the basement flooring). We will not be renewing our contract anymore but will be transferring to two small rooms on the second floor so we can continue our feeding ministry in the area.

With this transition, we won’t have a place to meet as a church during the week but for Sunday afternoons, we will be renting a function room at a hotel along Kalayaan Avenue near the Bel-Air area. We’re praying that as we move to this new location for our church services that we do not lose so much attendees and that we would be able to reach new people and families in the new area.

Part of growing in Christ is seeing changes in one’s life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says that when a person turns to Christ in repentance and faith he becomes a new creation. The Holy Spirit indwells that person and provides him or her the power to change.

Before turning to Christ, a person is enslaved by sin. But at the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit regenerates that person’s spirit and is made alive in Christ. The Holy Spirit makes the changes for the better possible.

One may be struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction, abuse of substances like humidors, no sense of purpose in life, no peace; but once that person turns away from sin and turns to God, he or she is changed from the inside and the change will eventually manifest outside. The person is changed from glory to glory because of the work of the Holy Spirit in that person’s life.

Today, Brigada Eskwela 2012 kicked off at Gen. Pio Del Pilar National High School and I had the honor to represent our organization, Breaking Point Foundation Philippines, as the school’s partner NGO. This week, we will be conducting seminars for incoming students who’ve had issues with their grades and behavior the previous year. We will be tackling the subject of obedience to authority to help them be reminded of how rules set by authorities protect them and provide benefits for them.

Another topic to be discussed is responsible relationships which we hope will guide them in making the right choices regarding romantic relationships. This topic hopes to prevent living a promiscuous lifestyle which often leads to prevent pre-marital sex, early pregnancies, early marriages, paternity testing and even suicide.

Aside from the Brigada Eskwela 2012, the roll out of the K to 12 Basic Education Program was also started for incoming and repeating freshmen in public high schools nationwide. They will now be entering a new curriculum and will go through Grade 7 to 10 (junior high school) and by 2016, start their two additional years in senior high school.

It really is an honor and privilege to serve Gen. Pio Del Pilar National High School in the way that we are doing now. We thank all the supporters of Breaking Point Foundation Philippines and our partner organization, Manna Worldwide through Sumulong Baptist Church.

I recently saw a link that was shared in Facebook, an "Open Letter to Miriam Quiambao: Let's defend every word in the Bible!" Being a pastor and a man who studies and teaches the Bible, I became curious about it and started reading. When I first saw the title I thought it was something that is for the Bible but as I read it, I found out it wasn't. It was a sarcastic reply to whatever Miriam Quiambao said or posted online about something.

As I further investigated, this note or article entitled "Open Letter to Miriam Quiambao: Let's defend every word in the Bible!" is a personal response to Miriam Quiambao's statements in Boy Abunda's Saturday night show, Bottomline where she, based on the reaction of many netizens, made statements about religion and homosexuality which offended people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. I did not see the show but I learned about it through an online article in Manila Bulletin. After that show, there were many who reacted in Twitter and this FB open letter is one of the reactions to that Saturday night episode.

As I read the article on FB, I started to see that it was a sarcastic response to Miriam Quiambao's stance on the Bible about homosexuality. And as a student of the Bible, which I believe to be the Word of God, written by men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and is therefore true and the source of absolute truth, I can't help but share my thoughts on the open letter. First, I understand that the person who wrote the open letter to Miriam Q. was a man who reads the Bible as well. His knowledge of bible references was obvious. But his conclusions and interpretations were wrong.

2 Timothy 2:15-17 says "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 16 But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene." There is a right, correct and accurate way to handle the word of God. A person cannot just go on reading the Bible and give a quick interpretation of its content. The friend of the person who wrote the open letter said it right, those "words should not be taken out of context."

The right way to interpret the Bible starts from observation - looking at the context, who the author is, who the original intended recipients of the book are and understanding the culture that they live in. Even the type or genre of the book has to be considered because different books of the Bible were written in different literary genres such as poetry, prophecy, letters/epistles and historical narrative (many books of the Old Testament were written in this genre) where identifying the author, original recipient, the purpose of writing and the culture of their recipients are very important to observe before making any interpretation. You do not approach the different literary genres in the same way - you do it differently. Without considering these things any person can make erroneous interpretations and derive wrong principles from the Bible which can easily be discerned by a sincere student of God's Word and eventually filter and throw it out in a tumbler compost.

The next important thing is to have the right attitude and heart toward the Word of God. Meaning, if a person believes that the Bible does not just contain the Word of God but IS the Word of God then that person must believe that the Bible is truth and is without error, that it does not contradict itself. So any contradictions one thinks is found has a right explanation that is consistent with the character of God and His attributes.

Either you believe the Bible to be this way, because that's what it claims to be, or totally scrap the Bible and say that it is wrong because its claims do not hold any middle ground where you just select what is convenient for you to follow, like most people do. It is either absolutely true or absolutely false.

So, for those who say that they believe in the Bible yet they cheer for this open letter to Ms. Miriam Quiambao, take a step back and think - because whether we believe it or not, the Bible is absolute truth and there is a right way to extract the universal principles from it and perhaps, if you are sincere about discovering God through His complete and final revelation, the Bible, read it for yourself and learn how to handle it correctly. As you do this, you will discover not just knowledge but true wisdom which comes through the Person whom the Bible is revealing - Jesus Christ.

The intended recipient visits one of the Western Union branches to collect the money but is surprised by the news that the money has already been collected four days ago. Since the intended recipient did not collect the money four days ago, the only possible explanations are either somebody intercepted the important details which is not possible because the sender and the recipient has been doing this for more than two years every month and the process of sending info are really secure, or somebody inside Western Union had access to the information like the MTCN and the amount expected - who else could have known that in this particular case.

In this Western Union case I am talking about, I have so much reason to believe that it was an inside job because when I saw the transaction slip used for the erroneous withdrawal, the amount written on the amount expected field had already deductions for the documentary stamp tax. And who else would have known the deducted amount but a Western Union agent, not the recipient. As a person who has transacted with Western Union many times, what I understand is that when making a withdrawal, the MTCN has to be 100% correct and the amount expected must also be 100% correct, down to the last centavo (aside of course from the proper IDs presented). If these two information are not accurate then the transaction must be suspected as fraudulent, based on my own opinion.

But why does Western Union not act upon disputes by recipients? They refer to the legal term "privity of contract" which means that only parties to contracts (in this case, the sender and Western Union only) should be able to sue to enforce their rights or claim damages. The implication of this is that the true, intended recipient, who may not have any Treasury Management training even if Western Union commits the mistake of allowing a withdrawal made by a wrong recipient (usually fraudulent), cannot take any legal action against Western Union since their accountability is primarily to the sender.

I personally think that this can add security for the sender but is very inconvenient and unfair to a recipient. Western Union must be held accountable for their negligence especially when there is much reason to believe that fraudulent or erroneous transactions are made by dishonest insiders. This can lead to a pattern or even become a "modus operandi" by Western Union employees, agents or insiders. Just my two cents.

Trying to Get Back to Running

He is Joseph a.k.a the dreamer. God used him to save His people from the famine during their time but had to prepare him by allowing him to through very difficult times in his life.

Joseph was hated by his brothers so much that they plotted on killing him but sold him to slavery instead. As a slave, he was framed and put in jail for a crime he did not commit and then forgotten by friends he helped. Through all these, Joseph showed he was a spiritual Hercules by remaining faithful to God and responding positively in the different unfavorable circumstances.

If you are going through difficult times in your own life, you can still choose to be productive, be the best you can be and respond to the oppression around you.

Genesis 50:20 "But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive."

Access Financial Products at Lenddo

But after experiencing some financial setbacks and eventually freedom from the control of lenders with the help of my reliable wife a.k.a finance manager, applying for a quick cash loan has become the least of my options during sudden financial emergencies.

But as a last resort, I would probably utilize the services of Lenddo.com which is like a social network-dependent site that gives anyone his or her credit score based on their online social network. Any person who signs up can increase his or her "Lenddo score" by providing access to your online profiles in Facebook, Yahoo, Google and LinkedIn. As the member builds his or her own Lenddo community, attends a class online about becoming financially responsible and successfully borrows from and repays Lenddo, his or her Lenddo score also increases, as well as the community he or she belongs to. Having a higher score gives the member more access to financial products such as student loans or business loans in the Philippines available at Lenddo but limited to the purposes of home improvement, education, medical emergencies and career-based relocation.

Aside from having a high Lenddo score, what a member actually needs to have are a job, SSS number, a TIN, the right purpose for the loan without any collateral except their online reputation. This kind of service is first of its kind and because it is unique, I think it will catch the interest of many. Most loan service sites do not operate the way Lenddo does. I like their idea of an online scoring system which has a lot to do with making their financial products available. It is a commemoration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Usually, majority of Filipinos visit catholic churches, fast, and make physical sacrifices even to the point of having themselves nailed on a wooden cross. Most do this to sort of pay for the sins committed.

But what I have learned from the Bible, as I have read in different forms such as book-form, kobo ereader or an ebook reader, is that these sacrifices are unnecessary, unacceptable and actually not enough to satisfy God’s righteous and holy justice when it comes to sin in general. The only acceptable sacrifice was already made by Christ.

Why? Because no matter what man does or whatever man offers, we are still sinful and everything we offer or do has been tainted with sin. On the other hand, Jesus, who claimed to be 100% God and 100% man, lived a sinless life. That made Him the only sacrifice that was acceptable to God.

A great parallelism is the lamb that was brought by the Jews for their annual sacrifice for their sins. The lamb had to be spotless, without blemish or defect. Any other animal that was not perfect was unacceptable. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He was figuratively spotless, without blemish or defect because He was sinless and only His sacrifice was accepted by God.

His death, burial and resurrection was the only solution to satisfy God’s justice system for all mankind. That is why whoever “believes” in Him shall not perish but shall have eternal life. This is not a matter of religion but is about having a right relationship with God - the forgiven sinner, because of faith in Christ, becomes the child of God.

The Bible is clear that we can know that we have eternal life. So, the question is, do you know that you have eternal life? Do you know that when you die you are going to heaven? Do not be deceived because the apostle John clearly declared, ”And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:11-13)

Staying at Thien Xuan Hotel in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

We didn't encounter any problems checking in especially because we booked in advance via Agoda although we were charged an additional day because our arrival time was still covered by the previous day. We didn't bother to argue because we were all really sleepy that time and just wanted to rest.

But despite the additional charge, what I personally appreciate about Thien Xuan Hotel are their service and strategic location. The hotel staff were nice and easy to talk to despite the language difference. They were also very quick in meeting our needs when we arrived.

Their location is another plus because it is very near tourist destinations that are often visited during a Ho Chi Minh city tour. Some of the tourist spots visited by tourists with yoyos and phones are the War Remnants Museum, the Reunification Palace and the Ben Tanh market which is literally just a stone's throw away from the hotel.

The standard room that we booked cost $42 a night but we got it at a few bucks cheaper via Agoda and that is inclusive of a breakfast buffet, a bath room with a bath tub, free wifi and cable tv. I highly recommend Thien Xuan Hotel for those who plan to travel to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), Vietnam.

On Lotto and Money Management

Because you when you win or gain something out of it, it is at the expense of other people who lose their money.

Money management, of course, had a lot to do with what happened to the instant millionaire. He did not manage his money well. I personally believe that he was not ready to handle or manage that huge amount of money that’s why his money dwindled away so quickly.

God’s design for making money – yes, God is not against getting rich, in fact, it is God who gives a person the ability to produce wealth according to Deuteronomy 8:18 – is gathering it little by little. Because as a person earns and saves, he learns how to manage the small amount of money, and sometimes, even learning from his own mistakes as the small amount is mismanaged. But as the money grows, he learns slowly and eventually becomes able to handle a larger amount. Another principle of stewardship – “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” (Luke 16:10).

I Love the Leather Office Chair from OkayOkay Deals

Peniel Prayer Mountain and Camp Site. We used an Isuzu van to get there and were glad that its coolant pump was working properly so we got to the camp site without any problems.

To get to Peniel House of Prayer and Camp Site we drove north on NLEX and exited at SCTEX and continued north and took Concepcion exit. From Concepcion, Tarlac, we drove to Capas and took the road towards Camp O’Donnel. This is the same road that goes towards the Capas National Shrine and the Spa Town and the place where you rent 4x4 vehicles which will lead you to the trek to Mt. Pinatubo.

This year, we will be holding another four-day, three-night summer youth camp at the camp site in Tarlac and the theme this year is “Real Steel: Unchangeable, Unshakable, Unstoppable”. The camp dates are April 17-20, 2012 and we are targeting 1,200 participants from Antipolo City, Pasig City, Quezon City, Makati City and other provinces in Luzon.

Experience "Real Life" by Lincoln Brewster

We were very proud of them for being able to control the kart and drive around the kart track safely.

But of course, the excitement of being able to go karting in Makati with my friends was also something worth remembering. Even though we didn't play for trophies that day we did our best to reach our best times around the race track. It was truly an adrenaline-pumping activity which brought out the widest smiles from our faces. We all hope we could go karting in Manila again soon.

Good Times With Friends

It has been a year filled with blessings that actually began in 2010. God’s protection and faithfulness continues to be manifested even through the difficult moments – one of which was when our son contracted Dengue fever during my birthday last September. I remember spending my birthday at the hospital instead of spending it in Boracay. We were forced to cancel our trip but it was alright for as long as our son was safe. This was also the year I got hospitalized for the first time and even underwent a minor surgery.

Taken at Marikina Valley Medical Center last February

This is what was left from the fire in Guadalupe where four families from our church in Makati were affected

The tragedies like the fire in Lateral Compund in Guadalupe, Makati City and the flash floods Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City were also something we had to face together with some people we know.

Every year has always been a mixture of positive and negative experiences but the past two years (the best two years of my life so far) has been filled with more good stuff than bad ones. 2011 was a year to remember new people we met in church, a new outreach location, moments with blogger friends, personalized keepsakes received, reunions with high school friends, time spent traveling to places I’ve never been to (Hongkong), new hobbies to get engaged in (wake boarding and City Kart Racing) and special people whom we started investing in.

Hongkong Disneyland

City Kart Racing for the first time

Just recently, my son learned how to kart race as well

Our outreach at Gen. I got a Fives Squared Oakley and she got herself an Aviator RayBan. I have tried both and I like the aviator better. It fits me well and I think it looks good on me or anyone who wears it. Here is a photo of me wearing the RayBan Aviator sunglasses.

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
